With so many Americans turning away from religion, it's natural to wonder whether a Secular Left can ever challenge the Religious Right. A new book attempts to answer that question. It's called "Secular Surge: A New Fault Line in American Politics," and it's written by three people who know this topic better than most people ever could. David E. Campbell is the Packey J. Dee Professor of American Democracy at the University of Notre Dame who has written extensively about religion's role in American politics. Geoffrey C. Layman is Professor of Political Science at the University of Notre Dame. He, too, has written a lot about religion and politics and is currently the co-editor of the journal Political Behavior. David and Geoffrey are joining me today. The third author is John C. Green, the Emeritus Director of the Bliss Institute of Applied Politics at the University of Akron. We talked about whether the "secular surge" has peaked, if the GOP can appeal to non-religious voters, and the single issue that could unite atheists and evangelicals.
Dr. Karl Kaltenthaler - Bliss Institute
The topic of redistricting in Ohio has been on the minds of some politicians and political junkies for quite some time. A look at a congressional map shows some odd shapes and areas due to gerrymandering. Dr. John Green is from the University of Akron’s Bliss Institute, and he talked about the questions revolving around redistricting. Dr. Green mentions the reason for the mapping, which comes directly from the state legislature, and has to do with population growth, or lack thereof. The former interim president of the university also touched on the first week or so of Joe Biden’s administration, where the president has signed a record number of executive orders.
For the first time in nearly three decades, a president of the United States will not serve a second term. President Trump will leave the White House on January 20th and hand over the keys to Joe Biden and his administration. Dr. John Green, former interim president of the University of Akron and still a part of the Bliss Institute, shared his expertise in political science on the Ray Horner Morning Show. Dr. Green believed there were positives from the Trump administration, most notably improving trade deals with China, a stable economy prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the rapid speed of the vaccine production. Dr. Green also previewed what to expect from a Biden administration, which he says may be a mix between the newer wave of Democrats in Barack Obama and the more traditional, old school version of Bill Clinton.
Former University of Akron interim president Dr. John Green, who is also with the Bliss Institute, talked about how dangerous the president’s rhetoric over the last four years culminated in the Capitol Hill protests.
For a longer form interview, Dr. John Green from the University of Akron’s Bliss Institute shared his thoughts
Five weeks out from the presidential election, the first debate between President Donald Trump and Joe Biden take place at Case Western Reserve University tonight. Many voters have made up their minds, but there are some still on the fence, and could a good or bad debate performance swing the election? The Bliss Institute’s Dr. David Cohen does not expect this to be a high-brow debate, with Trump looking to “poke the bear” and bully Biden over his son, Hunter, and Biden may hit Trump back on his tax returns. Cohen feels the candidates have to avoid the gaffes as much as possible, so as to not make anything viral for the stretch run.
Last week’s Democratic National Convention was a four-night event that threw a lot of indictments at President Trump. The Republican National Convention, however, seems like a four-night shower of praise for the incumbent. Dr. John Green from the University of Akron’s Bliss Institute recapped the first two nights of the RNC, and he previewed the next two, which will feature speeches from VP Mike Pence and the president himself on Thursday, Donald Trump. While the RNC’s guestlist isn’t packed with celebrities, Dr. Green believes the “real people” in Nicholas Sandmann and the gun-toting McCloskey family from St. Louis may have a positive effect. Dr. Green also touched on the usual boost in the polls these conventions will give the week after.
The Democratic National Convention is being held in Milwaukee, but the speeches, from former to possibly future First Ladies to former presidents, are being done virtually. Dr. John Green is the former interim president of the University of Akron, and though he is retired from that position, he maintains a spot at the Bliss Institute. He talked about the DNC so far this week, from the speeches to the overall message being put forth by the party and candidates. In addition to the DNC, Dr. Green also touched on next week’s Republican National Convention, as well as President Trump’s war of words with Goodyear.

Your Voice Mahoning Valley grows from a belief that the people are not being heard and that solutions to problems they face are not receiving adequate attention. The project is part of a statewide effort begun in late 2015 as Ohio news organizations worked together, experimenting with new ways to represent the people of Ohio in the 2016 election. Backed by research conducted by the Jefferson Center , a non-partisan civic research organization in St. Paul, and polling by the Bliss Institute of Applied Politics at the University of Akron , the news organizations, led by the Akron Beacon Journal , developed a working model for listening to Ohioans and joining with the public in working toward solutions. The Your Voice Ohio media project has selected the Mahoning Valley as a test site to work closely with citizens in identifying solutions to the heroin epidemic. What the people decide here will be used as a model for other news outlets to tackle the crisis statewide, and then launch
