The July Forever Strong Foundations Challenge begins July 6, 2026. This 4-week challenge is designed to help you build a stronger, more energized you through sustainable nutrition, training, and lifestyle habits. Register here: https://bit.ly/4gCmoNR For 40 years you've been told 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram is "enough" but the scientists who contributed the reports behind the new 2025–2030 Dietary Guidelines say not a single study has ever shown that number beats eating more.In this episode, Dr. Gabrielle Lyon sits down with Dr. Don Layman and Dr. Heather Leidy, the protein researchers who developed the scientific reports informing the new U.S. Dietary Guidelines, to discuss:Why the guidelines reprioritized protein to a healthy range of 1.2–1.6 g/kg and why that still isn't technically "high protein"Why you don't really have a protein requirement, but an essential amino acid requirement and what that means for your brain, mood, and antioxidant productionWho's quietly falling short: roughly 20% of women over 60 sit below the RDA, and adolescent girls are among the most consistently deficientHow to spot real protein on a label (Layman's 10-gram threshold) and why most "+protein" snacks are just fairy dustWhat a higher-protein breakfast does to afternoon cravings, backed by fMRI brain-reward dataWalk away knowing how much protein you actually need, why "enough to avoid deficiency" and "enough to thrive" are two different numbers, and how to build every meal around protein first so you're covered on the nutrients that matter most.Thank you to our sponsors:OneSkin - Get 15% off at https://bit.ly/4ekX9gt with code DRLYONExplore More from Dr. Gabrielle LyonPremium Podcast Subscription: Ad-free episodes, key takeaway summaries, exclusive Q&A, and behind-the-scenes content https://foreverstrong.supercast.comWeekly newsletter: Recipes, podcast updates, and practical weekly insights https://drgabriellelyon.com/sign-up/Apply to become a patient: Personalized care with Dr. Lyon's clinical team https://drgabriellelyon.com/new-patient-inquiry/Find Dr. Donald K. The Psychology of Self-Injury: Exploring Self-Harm & Mental Health
What goes on at the neurobiological level that makes someone more vulnerable to self-injure or self-harm? What biological risk factors are at play? What roles do the vagus nerve, cortisol levels, and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis have? We hope to discuss the psychology of self-injury pain in a future episode, but in this episode, Dr. Michael Kaess from the University of Bern in Switzerland explains the neurobiology of self-injury in simple terms, or what we hope can be considered simple layman's terms. Don walks through the historical context behind early guidelines, including where things may have gone off track, particularly around the treatment of fat, cholesterol, and protein-rich foods. From there, the discussion moves into the science. Don outlines the limitations of relying heavily on observational nutrition research and contrasts this with findings from controlled trials, particularly in relation to protein requirements and metabolic health. He explains why he recommended a shift to the new protein targets to better support muscle, satiety, and overall health.Dr. Donald Layman is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Food Science & Human Nutrition at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Layman has been a leader in research about protein, nutrition for athletic performance, obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular health. Dr. Layman has over 100 peer-reviewed publications. He has received numerous awards for his research from the American Society for Nutrition and the National Institutes for Health and for his nutrition teaching. Send us Fan MailIn this episode of Keto Made Simple, Dr. Eric Westman sits down with leading protein researcher Dr. Don Layman to break down one of the most misunderstood topics in nutrition: protein. For decades, protein was overlooked in dietary guidelines, but new research is finally changing the conversation. Dr. Layman explains why protein should come first in your diet, how much you actually need, and why focusing only on carbs and fat misses the bigger picture. The discussion dives into muscle-centric health, metabolism, protein quality, and how your body uses protein every single day. If you've ever wondered whether you're eating enough protein, what types of protein are best, or how protein impacts weight loss, aging, and long-term health, this conversation will completely change how you think about food. This is essential viewing for anyone interested in keto, low-carb diets, metabolic health, or simply improving their overall nutrition.#keto #protein #lowcarb #nutrition #weightloss #health #diet #fitness

Are we getting nutrition completely wrong? For decades, we've been told to avoid fat, cut cholesterol, and rely on carbs—but what if that advice has quietly led to weaker bodies, slower metabolisms, and rising chronic disease? Why are more people struggling with obesity, muscle loss, and fatigue… even when they're “eating healthy”?In this eye-opening episode, Dr. Donald K. Layman, one of the world's leading experts on protein metabolism, breaks down what's really happening inside your body—and why protein may be the most misunderstood nutrient in modern nutrition.Dr. Layman is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he served for over 30 years as a Professor of Nutrition. He also held leadership roles as Head of the Department of Foods and Nutrition and Associate Dean of the College of Agriculture. With a Doctorate in Nutrition and Biochemistry and a Master's in Biochemistry, Dr. Layman has built a distinguished career studying dietary protein and amino acids. PathologyFrom Greek pathos = suffering, feeling, diseaseand logos = study, accountSo pathology literally means the study of suffering/disease.This is a great opener because it shows how medical language often begins not with the body, but with the idea of human suffering. From Greek kardia = heartYou get:cardiac arresttachycardia = fast heartbradycardia = slow heartVery teachable because once people know cardi-, they start seeing it everywhere. From Greek neuron = nerve, sinewUsed in:neuropathyneurologyneurosisA nice example of how one root moves from the physical body into psychology and culture. From Greek arthron = jointplus -itis = inflammationSo arthritis literally means inflammation of the joint. This is one of the most useful medical suffixes to teach:tonsillitisbronchitisdermatitisFrom Greek gaster = stomachplus -itisLiterally inflammation of the stomach. You can connect this to:gastricgastrologygastrointestinalFrom Greek derma = skinplus -itisLiterally inflammation of the skin. This root is highly visible in:epidermisdermatologyhypodermicFrom Greek nephros = kidneyplus -itisLiterally kidney inflammation.Good pair with the Latin root below for kidney, because English often keeps both a Greek and Latin tradition alive. From Greek hepar, hepat- = liverplus -itisLiterally inflammation of the liver. This one is a perfect example of a form that looks strange in English until you know the root. From Greek haima / hem- = bloodand rhēgnynai / -rrhage = to burst forthSo hemorrhage is basically blood bursting out. This is vivid, memorable, and very good for an audience because they can feel the image in the word. From Greek an- = withoutand haima = bloodLiterally without blood or lack of blood. Not perfectly literal in modern physiology, of course, but etymologically very revealing. From Greek kyanos = dark blueplus -osis = conditionLiterally the blue condition.Excellent for showing how medical language often names visible bodily states very directly. From Greek leukos = whiteand haima = bloodLiterally white blood.A striking example of descriptive naming based on what was observed. From Greek paralysis = loosening, disablingfrom para- + lyein = to loosenSo it carries the sense of being loosened apart or disabled.Great for showing that many disease terms began as verbs of bodily action. From Greek dia- = throughand rhein = to flowLiterally flowing through.Extremely memorable and surprisingly elegant once broken down. From Greek dys- = bad, difficultand pepsis = digestionLiterally bad digestion.A useful root pair because dys- appears all over pathology:dysfunctiondyspneadysphagiaFrom Greek dys- = difficultand pnoē = breathLiterally difficult breathing.Very accessible for an audience because the meaning becomes obvious once you crack it open. From Greek dys- = difficultand phagein = to eatLiterally difficulty eating/swallowing.Good chance to explain how roots shift over time into more technical meanings. From Greek nekros = dead body, corpseplus -osis = conditionLiterally the condition of dead tissue.Dark, vivid, and very podcast-friendly.From Greek onkos = mass, burden, tumorplus logos = studyLiterally the study of tumors/masses.This surprises people because the modern word feels so distant from its root. From Greek psyche = soul, mindplus -osis = condition
Emma Lingan from The Hockey News joins Robby to discuss the latest on the Preds. Where does the team sit as they continue the push for the playoffs? What could the future of Juuse Saros look like after the hiring of a new GM this offseason? Steve Layman from News Channel 5 hops on to talk more hoops and March Madness. We wrap up the show with some more bracket thoughts.
It's been a while since we've released a show, but the weather held us down in January, and just when we were about to get back in the thick of things tragedy struck our family. Rita R. Layman, mother of host Billy Riddle was killed in a tragic accident while on vacation in Florida. So this show is to honor her, and the people in Florida who brought some Appalachian goodness to us in our worst moments. Thank y'all for sticking around. We should be back on track soon. Want ad-free episodes? Subscribe to Forever Strong Insider: https://foreverstrong.supercast.comIn this episode, Dr. Gabrielle Lyon sits down with Dr. Donald Layman, one of the world's leading protein researchers and a key contributor to the newly released U.S. Dietary Guidelines. They explore why the old food pyramid failed, how nutrition science became driven by ideology instead of evidence, and what the updated guidelines finally get right about protein, fats, and carbohydrates. Dr. Layman explains why the long-standing protein recommendation of 0.8 g/kg was never intended for optimal health and how higher protein intake supports body composition, metabolic health, and nutrient adequacy. The conversation also dives into controversial topics including saturated fat, carbohydrate tolerance, animal versus plant protein, and the limitations of epidemiology in nutrition research. Gabrielle and Dr. Layman discuss how dietary guidelines shape school lunches, hospitals, and public institutions, and why a protein-first framework empowers individuals to make better nutrition decisions, especially as we age. This episode offers a clear, science-backed roadmap for understanding modern nutrition — cutting through misinformation and outdated dogma to focus on strength, longevity, and real-world application.Thank you to our sponsors: Timeline - Get 35% off a Mitopure subscription at https://www.timeline.com/drlyonBon Charge - Save 15% at https://boncharge.com/ with code DRLYONManukora - Go to https://www.MANUKORA.com/DRLYON to save 31% plus $25 worth of free gifts.Chapters: 00:00 Why Dietary Guidelines Exist and Why This Moment Matters01:20 The Hidden Origins of the Food Pyramid (World War II + Public Health)02:55 The Original Protein RDA: A Basement Number, Not Optimal Health05:50 Why the Old Guidelines Focused on What Not to Eat07:25 Why Protein Was Avoided for Decades08:50 Nitrogen Balance: Why It Never Predicted Health Outcomes11:10 Epidemiology vs Controlled Trials in Nutrition Science13:05 How the Protein Evidence Was Evaluated for the New Guidelines14:15 Why Higher Protein Improves Weight, Fat Loss, and Lean Mass15:35 Is “Too Much Protein” Actually Dangerous?16:40 Nutrient Deficiencies Risk on Low-Protein Diets17:35 Animal vs Plant Protein: Bioavailability and Amino Acids18:45 Why 0.8 g/kg Was Never Better Than Higher Protein20:15 Empowering Consumers Instead of One-Size-Fits-All Nutrition21:10 How Guidelines Shape School Lunches, Hospitals, and the Military23:05 Protein-First Meal Planning Explained24:50 Why the First Meal Matters More as You Age27:15 Does Protein Distribution Matter After 50?30:00 Protein, Satiety, and Appetite Control31:05 Why “Ounce Equivalents” Between Plant and Animal Protein Don't Work34:05 The Saturated Fat Myth and Why the 10% Rule Persists38:30 Where Saturated Fat Really Comes From in the Modern Diet39:45 Updated Fruit, Vegetable, and Grain
The world is getting weirder every day… We need weirdness specialists. Maybe the best guy for the job is my friend, the brilliant “metashaman” (and possible octopus) Layman Pascal. In his own words, Layman “used to be a Canadian meditation teacher, yoga instructor & philosopher of Integral Metatheory but he's feeling much better now.” He leads the Metamodern Spirituality Labs, hosts The Integral Stage, Soulmakers+, and (forthcoming) Untegral Stage podcasts, and provides unique online courses. He is also a founding member of several think tanks in the developmental psychology and spirituality space, senior editor of Emerge online & is allied to numerous institutes across the field. In addition to many journal and anthology articles, he is the author of Gurdjieff for a Time Between Worlds, Sex, Death & the Occult, as well as an upcoming book about Nietzsche. Layman is known for his philosophical work on the metaphysics of adjacency, complex nonduality, coaxial developmental stage theories, sacred naturalism, archaic futurism, embodied spirituality & the “integration-surplus model of religion and spirituality” for a post-postmodern civilization facing numerous accelerating and converging crises. In this conversation we cover a lot of ground in a very short time, including: the nature of futurity and how humankind's relationship to the future is changing; how to surf intense peculiarity'; the abiding sociocultural role of “shamanoid” personalities and other useful weirdos; “wartime” mobilization for The Big Us; and other deep and delightful subjects.
