In 1924, the Washington Nationals (they were the Nationals, but also referred to as the Senators) won their first-ever World Series. It was a remarkable season for the Nationals. Owner Clark Griffith dismissed manager Donnie Bush just after the 1923 campaign and named Bucky Harris player-manager. It was a huge risk. Harris was only 27 years old and had only played four years in @MLB . How would the veterans on the team respond to taking orders from someone so young? What kind of experience and knowledge did such a young ballplayer possess? To the surprise of many, everyone accepted him, even aging veterans such as Roger Peckinpaugh and Walter Johnson. In fact, Johnson, who was coming off the first arm injury of his career, was hoping to rebound in his age-36 season, in what was supposed to be the final season of his career. Not only did "The Big Train" rebound he went 23-7 and won the MVP. He was sensational. Everything fell into place for Washington in 1924. A perennial second-division team, the Nats/Sens surprised everyone, won the American League, and then defeated the heavily favored New York Giants in the World Series to capture their first and only World Series Championship. The Nats have played a pair of Grapefruit League games and James Wood homered in each one. Mark & Al begin by discussing the team's #2 ranked prospect's mammoth shots in West Palm and Jupiter over the weekend. Wood is 21 years old spent the bulk of 2023 with Double-A Harrisburg. Meanwhile, Robert Hassell III tripled on Saturday night and Dylan Crews already came through with a diving catch. (11:45) Keibert Ruiz's had a rough start to Spring as he was charged with two catcher interference calls and a passed ball. Mark explains what Keibert is working on in camp after his sub standard 2023 behind the plate. (16:45) The Lerners have told the Washington Post that they are no longer exploring a sale of the Nats. How much does the timing of this announcement have to do with the specifics of the Orioles sale? (31:35) Saturday was the deadline for all players to report to Spring Training and Stephen Strasburg was not among them. At the beginning of camp Mike Rizzo indicated he expected Strasburg to be in West Palm by February 24th. Mark explains the latest regarding the situation. I talk about the life threatening head injury Mickey Cochrane suffered after being hit by a pitch as well as how a similar pitch changed the MLB career of SS Dickie Thon. I then play by interview with former Washington Senators C Steve Korcheck. He makes references to Senators greats Mickey Vernon and Bucky Harris. I finish off by talking about another anniversary we should be celebrating on April 15th every season as it was the first time a Puerto Rican player played in the big leagues (Hiram Bithorn). I also talk about Luis Olmo playing in the 1949 World Series over 7 years after Bithorn made his MLB debut on 4/15/1942

John feels that would be revenge for a lousy idea in the first place. He then talks about the coaching/ managing careers of NBA Head Coach Bill Fitch and MLB manager Bucky Harris and openly questions their place in their respective sports’ Hall of Fames. Finally, John speaks a little bit about the 1978-79 Seattle SuperSonics, the 1981 Montreal Expos, and the 1948 Cleveland Browns.
