Brady House, the Nationals' promising 21-year-old prospect, is generating excitement as he prepares for a potential major league debut this season. After experiencing some struggles last year with a career-low .699 OPS due to plate discipline issues, House took a step back during the offseason to refine his skills. Training with seven-time All-Star Paul Goldschmidt helped him develop a better understanding of hitting, especially in managing full-count situations and recognizing pitches. House has changed his mindset to focus on making strong swings rather than simply surviving the count, which has shown improvements in his spring performance, boasting a .333 batting average and an .821 OPS. As the Nationals seek a long-term solution at third base following Anthony Rendon's departure, House's defensive skills and offensive potential have drawn comparisons to a young Ryan Zimmerman. Despite a rough season in 2024 that saw him fall off many top prospect lists, the team's decision to sign Paul DeJong on a one-year deal suggests they still harbor confidence in House's abilities. With 19 home runs last season and a focus on improving his plate discipline, fans are eager to see how he develops and contributes to the team's future.

The Nationals face a challenging offseason as they aim to bolster their lineup, particularly in addressing their significant power shortage, having ranked near the bottom in home runs for the past two seasons. With emerging talents like James Wood and Dylan Crews set to debut and the potential addition of 2021 first-round pick Brady House, there's hope for improvement in slugging. However, to truly enhance their offensive capability, the team will need to seek established power hitters through free agency, especially for the first base position, which has been a weak spot since Ryan Zimmerman's retirement and Josh Bell's trade.

Friday night was a banner evening for the Nats organization, capped off with a 3-2 win in extras over the visiting Angels. Al & Mark begin by updating you on the highlights that occurred across the team's minor league affiliates on Friday. They then shine a spotlight on Alex Call, who had walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the 10th; his 3rd hit of the day. (08:00) The Nationals past met its future when James Wood had an infield single at the expense of Anthony Rendon. It seemed like Rendon did not realize how much speed Wood has when running down the line. (12:30) Washington benefited from good pitching all night between Mitchell Parker, Jacob Barnes, and Kyle Finnegan. Parker is seriously making a case as the team's best starting pitcher this season and his ERA currently sits at 3.83. (22:00) CJ Abrams was a late scratch and Nasim Nunez filled at SS. Nunez was dealing with cramps late in the game as Mark points out the odd circumstances surrounding his roster status and what that might mean. (24:00) Rendon received a standing ovation from the crowd as it was his first time returning to Navy Yard since the 2019 World Series. Rendon had three singles, but did strikeout in the top of the 10th. Amazingly, the Angels have used more players at 3B since signing Rendon than the Nationals have in that time frame. (30:00) Who was better at 3B at their peak? Rendon or Ryan Zimmerman? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

That's when he met a man who excitedly welcomed him into polyamorous relationship. For the 2021 World Series Marc joined us for a fantastic discussion on the links between baseball and espionage. How do we top that? A baseball fanatic ex-CIA officer? Why, how about getting a first-round draft pick, World Series Champion with over 6500 at-bats? Done! Enter Ryan Zimmerman, Mr. National! Ever wondered about signs-stealing, how to run a baseball counterintelligence operation, or what some of the many, many links are between baseball and espionage? You've come to the right place for a discussion that goes to the bottom of the ninth inning over a two-episode conversation. Ryan played for the Nationals from 2005, when he was a first-round draft pick, through to 2021, when his #11 jersey was retired. He is an ex- All-Star, Silver Slugger, Gold Glove winner, and 2019 World Series Champion. Marc is a highly decorated former CIA operations officer who specialized in counterterrorism, the Middle East, and South Asia. Prior to his retirement, he served at CIA headquarters in charge of clandestine operations in Europe and Eurasia. He is the author of the 2021 book, “Clarity in Crisis: Leadership Lessons from the CIA.” And… “Big Data” is upending many fields, not least baseball and espionage. Gaining a competitive edge is central to both activities, the big argument is about how much “soul” is lost along the way. The Houston Astros have been a lighting-rod team, whose “smart and modern” or “cold and cynical” approach has been discussed at Penn's Wharton School of Business and in the pages of the Harvard Business Review. Quotes of the Week "I think “Dare to Fail” is enormous. I would want you to put me up at the bases load in the bottom of the ninth. I'll take it every single time. Even if I feel like I have zero chance, I want to be there." - Ryan Zimmerman "You know, you have to have that mentality in these professions." - Marc Polymeropoulos Resources *Andrew's Recommendation* Moneyball, M. Patrick Montgomery is a Yankees fan currently living in South Carolina who fell in love with baseball by collecting cards as a kid. Last summer, Patrick released his first book The Baseball Miracle of the Splendid 6 and Towny Townsend. The Splendid 6 is a group of players made up of Michael Cuddyer, David Wright, Ryan Zimmerman, Mark Reynolds, B.J. Upton, and Justin Upton. Each of the six played over 10 years in the majors and are a big part of Towny Townsend's coaching legacy. We also get into some of Patrick's favorite ballparks in the Carolinas, what it's like to see a perfect game, and the night he spent in Yankee Jail at the age of 10.
