Recognizing the Reality of Spiritual WarfareIn reflecting on spiritual warfare, it's tempting to either overemphasize or downplay Satan's influence. While some traditions see every life event as a battle against demonic forces, there's a risk of overlooking the profound impact of personal sin, which can align us with the devil's schemes. Satan seeks to destroy not just individuals but God's very credibility. If he could snatch even one soul from Christ's hand, then he would expose God as a liar. This sobering reality stirs a call to vigilance—not through human strength, but by recognizing the unseen battle. Our fleshly instinct to “buck up” and rely on personal fortitude misses the deeper truth: true victory lies in dependence on Christ, who faced and overcame the ultimate spiritual battle for us.The Ease of Faith and the Devil's DeceptionLiving in a land of relative ease, where faith requires little sacrifice, can dull our appreciation for Christianity's beauty. Unlike those in persecuted regions, where believers face life-threatening risks, our daily struggles often revolve around mundane tasks like getting to church on time. This comfort can blind us to Satan's work, as Baudelaire warned: the devil's greatest wile is convincing the world he doesn't exist. Without a perceived threat, we neglect spiritual defenses. Yet, Christ calls us to a different weapon, which is prayer over the sword. In the face of Satan's relentless efforts to undermine God's integrity, we're urged to turn to prayer, trusting not in our own strength but in the One who has already overcome.Christ's Anguish and Our Call to PrayerIn the Garden of Gethsemane, we witness Christ's intense anguish, sweating drops like gushing blood as He faced the weight of enduring hell's wrath for us. Innocent, yet burdened, He was ministered to by an angel, echoing God's care for Elijah. Meanwhile, the disciples succumbed to grief, sleeping instead of praying, and resorted to swords, misunderstanding the spiritual battle's nature. Christ's rebuke and healing of the servant's ear reveal that spiritual warfare isn't fought with fleshly weapons. Judas's betrayal with a kiss and the crowd's shortsighted rejection of Christ, despite His miracles, which betray his prophetic credibility, highlight human failure to align with God's truth. Yet, Christ's faithfulness calls us to pray, seeking strength to resist temptation and stand firm in His victory.Victory Through Humility and Trust in ChristOur response to Satan's schemes must be rooted in humility and prayer, not self-reliance. Like Hezekiah or the psalmist in Psalm 139, we're called to seek God's conviction and guidance, trusting His Spirit to conform us to His will. Satan prowls, seeking to disrupt our contentment in Christ, but the cross and resurrection assure us of victory. Christ's resurrection guarantees an indestructible kingdom, and through prayer, we participate in His triumph. Let us live as grateful conquerors, not fearing Satan's wiles but resting in the Redeemer's power, praying for wisdom to honor Him and confidence that His promises will never fail.

Then the men of Israel said to Gideon, “Rule over us, you and your son and your grandson also, for you have saved us from the hand of Midian.” Gideon said to them, “I will not rule over you, and my son will not rule over you; the LORD will rule over you.” And Gideon said to them, “Let me make a request of you: every one of you give me the earrings from his spoil.” (For they had golden earrings, because they were Ishmaelites.) And they answered, “We will willingly give them.” And they spread a cloak, and every man threw in it the earrings of his spoil. And the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was 1,700 shekels of gold, besides the crescent ornaments and the pendants and the purple garments worn by the kings of Midian, and besides the collars that were around the necks of their camels. And Gideon made an ephod of it and put it in his city, in Ophrah. And all Israel whored after it there, and it became a snare to Gideon and to his family. — Judges 8:22-27 Israel is finally free of the Midianites. Their oppressors are defeated. In their eyes, Gideon is their hero. The people beg him to be king, but Gideon refuses: “The LORD will rule over you.” It sounds noble. But right after this, Gideon gathers their gold and builds an ephod—a type of religious garment that they make into a shrine and marker of the win. What was meant to honor God has become a trap. Israel worshiped it, and Gideon's household fell into idolatry. Gideon leaned on God in weakness but forgot him in strength Failure drives us to God. Success tempts us to drift from Him. That's the real test. Think about it: When your business is struggling, you pray. But when it prospers, do you still pray with the same effort? When your marriage feels shaky, you cry out to God. But when it feels stable, do you keep seeking him? When you're in a season of weakness, you cling to God's Word. But when life feels strong, do you drift into self-reliance? Our battlefield isn't always a Midianite army—it's the comfort and pride that come after the victory. Here's the warning: Success without surrender becomes a snare. Gideon's story reminds us that yesterday's victories don't protect us from today's temptations. Sometimes, they often create them. So don't let success become your snare. ASK THIS: Has success in my life made me more dependent on God—or less? What “victory moments” have tempted me to drift into pride or comfort? How do I keep pointing myself and others to God instead of to the spoils? Am I as prayerful in seasons of strength as I am in seasons of weakness? DO THIS: Today, take one area of success in your life and deliberately turn it into surrender. Write down the blessing—and then write a prayer giving it back to God. PRAY THIS: Lord, guard my heart in victory. Don't let my successes become snares. Keep me humble, grateful, and surrendered in every season. Amen. PLAY THIS: "Lord, I Need You."

The first commandment is "Thou shalt have no other gods before me." The last commandment is "Thou shalt not covet." The violation of the last commandment leads to the violation of the first. The overwhelming desire for "things" of this world, and knowledge to merely satisfy our curiosity is what leads us to having other "things" that take the place of God in our life. Jesus warned about a snare that would come "on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth" in the last days. This snare would cause them to be overcharged with eating and drinking and cares of this life. That smartphone that you hold in your hand has done just what Jesus warned us about. It has become our god; it has usurped God in our lives in everything. For most people it is the first and only source of information, their counselor about the issues of life, and even spiritual guidance. It has undermined all order and authority, and given us the ability to gaze upon every evil thing that ever existed. In every aspect it has become the god of this generation. It is up to every individual to keep themselves out of this snare that Satan has laid for us all.

“How long have you been in the snare of the devil?” That was the lose‑lose question asked of those—mostly women—accused of witchcraft in Essex County, where Salem Village was located, in 1692. According to the Cornell University historian Mary Beth Norton, PhD '69, however, it was the accusers, rather than their targets, who were in the thrall of something powerful. In her 2002 Ambassador Award–winning book In the Devil's Snare, Norton says that the Salem witchcraft crisis was driven not by a demonic force, but rather by the trauma of the nearby wars with New England's Indigenous populations—conflicts that had been raging for many years and had left an indelible mark on many refugees who fled to towns on the North Shore of Massachusetts.
