Never become a bitter turd, no matter what happens to you. For the first time in 37 years I had to cancel show due to illness because I got Covid 19! I am fully vaccinated so I felt bullet proof and hugged way too many people at the shows in Las Vegas last week. Fortunately I was about to perform at Brad Garrett's comedy club in Las Vegas when I found out that I had it. Brad Garrett is one of the most loving & generous people in show business & the glorious humans who work at his club are like family to me. I was allowed to stay at the MGM Grand hotel & quarantine here. The first few days I felt like a truck had run me over & the big jacuzzi tub in the room was a great relief to my body aches. Las Vegas is currently a hot bed for the Delta variant & it got me. Now this is just one more thing that I have survived. In this episode I talk about how the last 8 days of quarantine have been, the beautiful memorial celebrating the life of Carl LaBove that I spoke at that was held at Brad Garrett's comedy club on July 18. I tell you here about the legacy of the bright soul that was Carl LaBove is to never become a bitter turd, no matter what happens to you. I also talk about the influence that Annick Piel had on me, she was the mother of my first adult love story Nathalie & Annick recently passed away in Paris. With my girlfriend sitting beside me we talk about the Westwood Village memorial cemetery where we saw the graves of Rodney Dangerfield and Marilyn Monroe. We also talk about seeing Kool & the Gang at the Hollywood Bowl & seeing Charley Crockett at the Belly Up in Solana Beach. Going to cemetery's remind you to live & so does getting Covid 19. I'm ready to live & bust out of the MGM in Las Vegas & be rejuvenated & healed in the wilderness. The great wide open West stands open before me. I'm ready to breath easy among the mountains. Special thanks to Brad Garrett for paying me this week even though I didn't do any shows. I'm grateful for the people in my life & that is the best thing I learned during this illness. God bless the good hearted true friends! Hollywood be thy name! patreon.com/tomrhodesradiosmartcamp

How hard was it to keep the rock n roll comedian contained, and what could have been before the tragic car accident that took Sam away from us. Many stories from Sam's time on the Stern show, including the feud with Bon Jovi, and sleeping through his Joan Rivers show appearance. And did Bill ever get the chance to have a conversation and make up with Carl LaBove before his death recently? That is the last question and it is quite the story... Quite lengthy, but I did not know what to cut out, so hopefully you can sit back and enjoy some great stories about a legend who passed too soon. Comedian Butch Lord joins Curt on the show to tell some crazy stories. Unfortunately we had some audio issues and I had to cut a bunch out, and then once the audio was working I forgot to hit record, so we leave you hanging with Butch's Carl LaBove story. I'm sorry for the issues! It's still a fun episode.
Life is like a butterfly... One minute you are floating along and then the next... thummppp! Windshield. This past week two men that I love dearly dropped dead. Gerke Nauta was the director of the first two seasons of the Kevin Masters Late Night show that I did in Amsterdam. He taught me how to be a television host and how to look into the cold black lense of the camera and speak warmly to the people watching at home. Gerke Nauta changed the course of my life when he and Jason Tegelaar chose me to be the star of their show. Another great loss to me was the death of Carl Labove. Before I ever met him he was my hero for his mastery of stand up comedy and then in the course of our friendship he was a never ending source of positive energy and an example of someone who never let hardship rob him of his joy for living or diminish his sparkle in any way. Both of these men are heroes to me in the story of my life and I praise, remember and celebrate them in this episode. I also talk about how I fell in love with the Toronto Blue Jays and why Bo Bichette is the Tom Rhodes of baseball. Furthermore I talk about why you shouldn't feed squirrels salted nuts, how to solve the homeless crisis in Los Angeles and the most annoying thing that the artist Rembrandt did to his wife. There is new hope for the planet now that summer is arriving and because more people are getting vaccinated it means that it won't be long before we are allowed to gather in groups again to celebrate the best parts of being human. Hooray for humanity and joy be upon you! Patreon.com/tomrhodesradiosmartcamp Youtube.com/kingofhaha

I was a fan of Carl LaBove before I ever even met him. When I was 17 I went to see Sam Kinison in Orlando and Carl LaBove was the opening act. Carl blew me away that night with his ferocious comedy cyclone, Kinison was wasted and I left the Bob Carr auditorium thinking Carl LaBove was a name to remember. Years later I met Carl when we did the Toronto comedy festival together. On the gala television taping for that festival Carl accidentally ended up being on mushrooms for that performance. I never get tired of hearing Carl tell the story of that night. Through the years I have become good friends with Carl and I see him as a master Samurai warrior of comedy. He is the perfect example to shatter the notion that comedy is a young man's game. Carl continues to be one of my favorite live performing comedians and night after night he harnesses the same enthusiastic high energy story telling power that first blew me away when I saw him at 17. I'm privileged to have seen him perform countless times through the years and he inspires me because his performances get sharper and his stories and perception never cease to bust me up. He is one of the few comedians who always makes me laugh out loud. This conversation was recorded last month in Chicago as autumn was just taking hold of the trees. We were shooting the shit at the kitchen table of the apartment where Zanies puts their headliners. One of the best human beings in the comedy industry, open your heart for Mr. Carl LaBove.
Hola Digheads! This week, Mike and Josh are joined by filmmaker and comedian, Mike Finazzo! Mr. Finazzo is a regular at clubs and independent comedy shows across the east coast. In this episode, Mike shares some stories from his recent weekend excursions on the road as a stand up comedian guy. He was living the dream until his wife called and informed him that their house had been broken into that weekend. We also discuss a number of topics during this episode including, but not limited to: “Lincoln” if directed by Quentin Tarantino, getting caught doing sexual things, early drug experiences (that drum set was expensive), not shitting on local radio stations, and so much more!
