The government led by Anthony Albanese is a timid troupe of shivers looking for a spine to run up. That's the assessment from the Labor wise men who gather for lunch in Sydney once a month – Paul Keating, Bob Carr, John Faulkner and other warriors of the past – who claim the government is too cautious and defensive. For many Labor insiders, both in Canberra and across the country, the carping from the sidelines is an annoying distraction they wish would go away. But there are some within the Albanese government who say the comments are providing the debate and contestability that the “broken” party sorely lacks. Today, special correspondent in Canberra for The Saturday Paper Jason Koutsoukis on Labor's war with its old guard. Send me a messageToday's guest is a courageous soul doing the hard but necessary work to positively alter the trajectory of our society and the ecosystems we rely upon - Mathew Mytka. Mat is someone I've gotten to know in recent months and it's been a pleasure. He helped as the special guest in a Finding Nature event titled Deceit, apathy and desperation - Addressing the uncertain harms of artificial intelligence, and I came away in awe of how Mat brought serious play to such a dense topic yet also a space I hadn't expected play could be a part of.That's what Mat does though through his business Tethix - he brings the human into the process of technology creation and deployment. Taking it from a disembodied neck up tool to something much deeper, connecting human values and needs to what is being animated and created in that process and using the elements of fire, air, water and earth to ground the work in what is aligned to safe and healthy planetary boundaries.Mat isn't who you would expect to run into working in technology. He's anything but the stereotype - a practitioner with over 20 years experience spanning roles technical roles in data trustworthiness and tech ethics, to strategy, product and policy design roles. In 2023 he was nominated as a finalist at Innovation Australia's Disruptor of the Year for his work in co-developing Australia's Data Trust by design framework, which is influencing the work of thousands of practitioners and helps to shape policy, regulations and standards. If you're not sure about the emergence of powerful new technologies like artificial intelligence, I highly recommend this as Mat does a great job grounding what has and is happening in the world of technology in where we're at as a civilisation and how AI just reflects the existing cultural, political and social dynamics of our time, and how this can be traced to the enlightenment - a story of how we got to this moment. If technology is the world you inhabit on a daily basis Mat brings a new, refreshing perspective on how we need creativity, passion, curiosity and meaning to be embedded in the tools we're already and going to be using. No matter where you are on the spectrum of technology use and perspectives on AI, Mat points to humanity's innate desire to build and to make and evolve through action. How do we contain a tool of such immense capacity when we don't have a track record of doing so in the past? How do we all lean in to better appreciate and understand the world of artificial intelligence so that we can all play a role in what is being shaped.I really enjoyed this chat, Mat is an awakened human, and he woke something in me about the role of genuine curiosity and getting into action to understand and test instead of throwing rocks from my glasshouse with no glass left.Find Mathew and his work at Tethix.co, along with his substack and podcast wherever you're listening now. Send me a messageToday's guest is the delightful Jess Miller. Jess has been and remains a totem here in Sydney for many important and successful socially and environmentally impactful campaigns and initiatives - from delivering improved cycling infrastructure in the early 2010s to the Garage Sale Trail to the 202020 Vision or Greener Spaces Better Places program. Add to that a five year side hustle as one of Sydney's youngest ever city councillors, plus mothering and you have the ingredients for someone who is made from audacity and insanity, depending on who you ask and at what stage her visionary process is at.Jess is here is to chat about her upcoming installation at the Vivid Festival in a couple of weeks - A New Normal. This is a fascinating initiative, that has been breaking ground in Melbourne by seemingly taking a product development approach to urban development and planning. Two worlds that are seemingly distinct with very little overlap. As you'll hear in this conversation it's an attempt to transition Sydney to greater self sufficiency, greater environmental stewardship, improving social value outcomes and delivering economic benefits along the way. This work is definitely not for the feint of heart, but just about everything Jess has pursued - from spending her initial year of university in Brazil, to A New Normal - isn't for the usual operator. In many ways A New Normal is the perfect brand for her - outside the usual paradigm of thinking and doing, going from vision to action and doing it with a flare of creativity and spirit of partying along the way.Her energy is infectious and even from just a small amount of time with her she reeled me in with the persuasion, power and potential of what she is doing with A New Normal. She is part humble, part curious, part audacious, part insane. She is going for it though, and what a role model she is at a time when radical and urgent action is a panacea to our challenges but also fears and doubts. I hope you enjoy this one.I'm hosting a very exciting night at Customs House on the 29th of May in Sydney, coincidentally in the middle of the Vivid Festival where the city comes to life in a nightly light show. That night I'm doing my first big house event experience with former NSW Premier and Australian Foreign Minister, plus Friend of The Pod, Bob Carr. On the night we'll be exploring the implications of future climate action when 40% of the world's population is voting in domestic elections in 2024. It's great to be working with a couple of really great operators as part of producing this show. The first is Souling - Natasha Ritz's first book. I reckon Bob Carr might be wasting his time and money sueing Winston Peters for defamation.  If he was hoping that he would scare Winston into silence... he hasn't.   Winston just hit twitter today and doubled-down.  Calling Bob Carr a shill.   A shill is someone who is a bit of a hustler... who tries to convince other people to think something is great.  Suggesting he's either shilling for the NZ Labour party who invited him... Or shilling for China.  Like in many examples of defamation cases... it often backfires.  because bob got himself all worked up about Winston first said... which was basically to call him a pawn for China.  How many of us hit the google to find out why Winston said that?  And then found the AFR article “how Bob Carr became China's pawn”    But... On the broader argument which is actually about AUKUS. Labour might need to just calm the farm a little bit. AUKUS is not quite the public flashpoint they seem to think it is... judging by the effort they're putting in.  I reckon most people don't care or understand, and all they're seeing is the Labour Party getting hysterical. Like them accusing Winston of embarrassing the country with this spat with Bob Carr - that's just dumb.   Winston hasn't embarrassed the country. Bob Carr doesn't hold office. He's just a citizen who flew here from Australia to tell us what to do.  So, if anything, Winston stands to win this argument simply because he's our guy being pushed around by an Australian.  And no one really likes being pushed around by their big brother, do they?   Anyway... Ijust wonder if Bob Carr's underestimated Winston Peters. He loves a fight, and clearly, he's loving the fight with Bob.   And Bob might be wise to give up while he's ahead.  LISTEN ABOVE.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The New South Wales Premier Chris Minns yesterday announced that the busy and popular public golf course at Moore Park will be carved up to create more free-form parkland, at the expense of golf holes. It seems like golf is paying the price on the back end of unfettered urban development on the edge of Centennial Park and Moore Park.  As the population of Zetland and surrounding streets rises, the absence of sufficient green space allowance within that development footprint is becoming more obvious. The sands of time, nature, and settlement have ravaged the terrain where Soldiers and Seminole battled each other in Florida in the 1800s. In South Florida, of course, this is true -- but with a twist. In some cases, modern buildings have been constructed atop archaeological sites that had not been previously excavated -- and without disturbing the ground foundation intrusively. That provides the opportunity for archaeological investigation. For decades, Bob Carr has been Digging Miami, as his new book states. Bob is the director of the not-for-profit Archaeological And Historical Conservancy in Davy, Fla. He has also worked extensively outside of Miami, in the South Florida region at both the Big Cypress Reservation and at the Okeechobee Battlefield. He joins us to discuss how he has teased out the truth from the south Florida soil, what he has found, and why it is important.        Robert S. "Bob" Carr's latest book is Digging Miami. This book traces the rich 11,000-year human heritage of the Miami area from the time of its first inhabitants through the arrival of European settlers and up to the early twentieth century. This the Seminole presence and the US Army's wartime removal efforts feature prominently in his story. Bob Carr was Dade County's first archaeologist, later historic preservation director, and held the position at a time when redevelopment efforts unearthed dozens of impressive archaeological sites, including the Cutler Site, discovered in 1985, and the Miami Circle, found in 1998. Digging Miami presents a unique anatomy of this fascinating city, dispelling the myth that its history is merely a century old.     Bob's work in downtown Miami led to his being featured in cover story for American Archaeology magazine. He has also excavated on islands in the Florida Keys, some as pictured in courtesy image above, featuring Seminole and Miccosukee grave sites.  Host Patrick Swan is a board member with the Seminole Wars Foundation. Good morning, this is Toby Sumpter with your CrossPolitic news brief for Tuesday, January 7th, 2020. In response to the US killing of Iranian Terrorist Qasem Soleimani last Friday, the Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said that the US had committed a grave mistake. On the day of the attack, Iran's Foreign Minister Javid Zarif tweeted that the airstrike was an “act of international terrorism,” suggesting that General Soleimani had been the most effective force fighting ISIS and Al Qaeda. The Foreign Minister said the act was “extremely dangerous & a foolish escalation” adding that “the US bears responsibility for all consequences of its rogue adventurism.” “Soleimani was the international face of resistance,” Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said in a statement, “and all lovers of resistance will be his avengers.” He added that “harsh retaliation is waiting.” Khamenei has ordered three days of public mourning, according to the AP.  The Daily Mail reports that on Saturday, Iranian General Gholamali Abuhamzeh, a Revolutionary Guards commander in the southern province of Kerman, threatened that Iran had itendified 35 targets for potential strikes and raised the red flags of revenge over every key mosque. Abuhamzeh said vital American targets in the region had been identified a 'long time ago', including ships in the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz and Tel Aviv. “The Strait of Hormuz is a vital point for the West and a large number of American destroyers and warships cross there … some 35 U.S. targets in the region as well as Tel Aviv are within our reach,” he said, according to Reuters. Trump responded on Sunday via Twitter: “Iran is talking very boldly about targeting certain USA assets as revenge for our ridding the world of their terrorist leader who had just killed an American, & badly wounded many others, not to mention all of the people he had killed over his lifetime, including recently.... ....hundreds of Iranian protesters. He was already attacking our Embassy, and preparing for additional hits in other locations. Iran has been nothing but problems for many years. Let this serve as a WARNING that if Iran strikes any Americans, or American assets, we have... ...targeted 52 Iranian sites (representing the 52 American hostages taken by Iran many years ago), some at a very high level & important to Iran & the Iranian culture, and those targets, and Iran itself, WILL BE HIT VERY FAST AND VERY HARD. The USA wants no more threats!” Many commentators pointed out that the threat to strike 52 cultural sites would seem to be a breach of international law. Others were also quick to say that this is the sort of international crisis they feared Trump would blunder into. But Trump continued on Twitter undeterred: Quoting a tweet from Texas Representative Dan Crenshaw who asked what is so controversial about there being repercussions for terrorists attacking the US, Trump said, “They attacked us, & we hit back. If they attack again, which I would strongly advise them not to do, we will hit them harder than they have ever been hit before! Trump followed up with two more tweets on the subject: “The United States just spent Two Trillion Dollars on Military Equipment. We are the biggest and by far the BEST in the World! If Iran attacks an American Base, or any American, we will be sending some of that brand new beautiful equipment their way...and without hesitation! These Media Posts will serve as notification to the United States Congress that should Iran strike any U.S. person or target, the United States will quickly & fully strike back, & perhaps in a disproportionate manner. Such legal notice is not required, but is given nevertheless!”  The US House Foreign Affairs Committee's Twitter account shot back, quoting this last tweet from the President, “This Media Post will serve as a reminder that war powers reside in the Congress under the United States Constitution. And that you should read the War Powers Act. And that you're not a dictator.” It seems that the House is suddenly interested in the constitution again…  On Sunday Iran announced that it is withdrawing from the 2015 nuclear deal. In exchange for economic sanctions being lifted, Iran had agreed to end all uranium enrichment programs for at least 15 years and submit to various inspections. However, last May, Trump had reinstated sanctions against Iran and states that trade with Iran, effectively ending America's participating in the deal. Iran responded by giving the other nuclear deal signatories 60 days to protect it from US sanctions, threatening to resume production of enriched uranium. Nuclear watchdog IAEA says that Iran has recommenced enriched uranium production. Trump responded to Iran's announcement on Sunday with all caps and an exclamation point: “Iran will never have a nuclear weapon!” Meanwhile the Iraqi Parliament passed a non-binding resolution asking US forces to leave the country, and Reuters reported Monday that the US Marine Corp Brigadier General William H. Seely III, the commanding general of Task Force Iraq had written a letter addressed to the Iraqi defense ministry's Combined Joint Operations Baghdad, stating, “Sir, in deference to the sovereignty of the Republic of Iraq, and as requested by the Iraqi Parliament and the Prime Minister, CJTF-OIR will be repositioning forces over the course of the coming days and weeks to prepare for onward movement… We respect your sovereign decision to order our departure.” [This letter was later repudiated by Defense Secretary Mark Esper, who insisted that the US has no plans to withdraw troops, according to Reuters. Trump also said such withdrawal would only be accompanied by severe sanctions.] Finally, on this topic, it's worth noting that a 1996 interview with Joe Biden captures him on a news program insisting strongly that if Iran every attacked a US facility it should be considered an act of war and that ANY retaliation would be warranted. Hmmm… We'll just let simmer for a bit and see if anyone notices. Probably not.  But speaking of fires, Australia continues to be ravaged by the worst wildfires seen in decades. CNN reports that dozens have died and more that 1300 houses have been destroyed, with over 14.7 million acres burned across six states, with 8.9 million of those acres in the hardest hit New South Wales. It's estimated that perhaps a third of the koalas in New South Wales may have been killed by the fires, which has caused some Hollywood elites to speak out in great alarm. But of course you can get more sympathy in Hollywood for koalas than you can for human babies, as evidenced by the applause and tears Actress Michelle Williams received at the Gold Globe Awards on Sunday night, when she announced that she had employed “a woman's right to choose,” implying that she had killed at least one of her children, so that she could pursue a career in acting.  But back to the Australian forest fires, higher than average temperatures, high winds, lightning strikes, arsonists, and the recent legalization of sodomite marriage in 2017 are all blamed by leading scientists. However, what you won't hear in the news is the fact that beginning the 1990s, Bob Carr's liberal Labor government began a massive forest lock-up program. Peter Austin writes at theland.com.au, “Before that "greening" frenzy began, soon after Carr came to office in 1995, national parks and reserves accounted for some 4.8 per cent of New South Wales. Today the total area of the state controlled by the National Parks and Wildlife Service is more than 9pc. In less than 20 years, therefore, the area of national parks and related reserves has virtually doubled, but the resources deployed to manage this vastly expanding empire have not doubled with it. On the contrary, it was revealed last week that even since 2011, successive budget cuts have resulted in the NPWS slashing its staffing of rangers by one-third, thereby impairing its capacity to conduct hazard reduction burns. But before Carr took over, much of the coastal bushland now locked up in national park was prudently managed state forest, where fuel loads were kept down by logging programs, regular thinning and cattle grazing.” Turns out that the GREEN Religion doesn't keep things Green at all. It just results in them turning black. And I'm not just talking about the United Methodist Church. This a lesson in government incompetence. But it's also a lesson in biblical jurisdictions. It is not the Civil Magistrate's job to managed forests. Incidentally, it's not the civil magistrate's job to fund the arts or media or news or education. God did not give those jobs to that office. Therefore, it is disobedience to God and inevitable tyranny for the State to assume those powers. Should Christians care about the environment? Of course. But we should care about it through private ownership of land, and private foundations and associations that will have skin in the game. Personal responsibility is key to success. Bureaucrats and committees cannot be expected to care that much about what doesn't actually belong to them. The other thing to note here is that God commanded mankind to take dominion of the earth and cultivate it. This means in part that the earth needs cultivating. We need godly foresters and loggers and conservationists who understand that just like man is not good all alone and needs a helper, so too, the land is not good all alone and needs gardeners. And the more the GREENIES fail to actually care for the earth, enterprising Christians should be looking for ways to pry the government's fat fingers off the land and return it to private citizens and foundations.  This is Toby Sumpter with your CrossPolitic New Brief for Tuesday, January 7th, 2020. This is Gabriel Rench with your CrossPolitic Daily News Brief for Wednesday, January 8th, 2020. More on Australian Fires Yesterday Toby reported that in the 1990s, Bob Carr's liberal Labor government began a massive forest lock-up program. Peter Austin writes at theland.com.au, “Before that “greening” frenzy began, soon after Carr came to office in 1995, national parks and reserves accounted for some 4.8 per cent of New South Wales. Today the total area of the state, controlled by the National Parks and Wildlife Service, is more than 9 per cent. In less than 20 years the area of national parks and related reserves has virtually doubled, but the resources deployed to manage this vastly expanding empire have not doubled with it. On the contrary, it was revealed last week that even since 2011, successive budget cuts have resulted in the NPWS slashing its staffing of rangers by one-third, thereby impairing its capacity to conduct hazard reduction burns. But before Carr took over, much of the coastal bushland now locked up in national park was prudently managed state forest, where fuel loads were kept down by logging programs, regular thinning and cattle grazing.” So there is that, and now more information has come out that according to the New South Wales Police Force website:  “Since Friday 8 November 2019, legal action – which ranges from cautions to criminal charges – has been taken against 183 people – including 40 juveniles – for 205 bushfire-related offences. Of note: 24 people have been charged over alleged deliberately-lit bushfires 53 people have had legal actions for allegedly failing to comply with a total fire ban, and 47 people have had legal actions for allegedly discarding a lighted cigarette or match on land.” Russel Crowe, due to the fires in his home country Australia, was unable to attend the Golden Globes and accept his award. He instead sent a letter that was read by Jennifer Aniston on his behalf when he was awarded best actor for his work on the series "The Loudest Voice”. In his letter he blamed global warming for the fires. If it was me, I would have blamed the 24 arsonist.  More on Iran The Obama administration really was a foreign policy disaster. One of his biggest blunders, not even sure we can call it that, was the Iranian Nuclear deal.  According to Fortune.com: “The U.S. announced the controversial nuclear deal with Iran on July 13, 2015. At a news conference on January 16, President Obama declared that the U.S. was lifting the first raft of sanctions against Iran. He also stated that the U.S. would return $1.7 billion to Iran, as agreed in the negotiations at the Hague. That same day, Tehran released the U.S. hostages, and the U.S. freed seven Iranians detained for violating financial and other U.S. sanctions on their home country. Hence, the return of the five Americans appeared to be one side of a prisoner exchange with Tehran. But Obama didn't mention that the same day, $400 million was being shipped over 6000 miles for deposit in Iran's treasury.  The shipment was a secret until The Wall Street Journal broke the story on August 2, 2015. Since then, Republicans from Donald Trump to Paul Ryan have assailed the White House for paying a gigantic ransom when government-paid ransom is barred under U.S. law, and for hiding the ploy from a public already highly skeptical of the U.S.-Iran nuclear agreement. President Obama denied the payment to Tehran was a ransom. The White House contends the payment simply settled a decades-long financial dispute...” Some might call this a Quid Pro Quo, but I digress. Our meddling in foreign affairs has been a disaster. We create problems and then we back out, we create more problems then we throw money at them, we create more problems and push democracy on them, we create more problems then we throw troops at them...rinse and repeat. At no point should conventional wisdom tell you that giving Iran $1.7 billion dollars is a good idea. BTW Vox does not think paying Iran $1.3 billion dollars was a scandal.  But think about this. Obama pumps billions of dollars into Iran, and then we are surprised that Trump Drone bombs their head of military operations for killing our troops, US contractors, and attacking our embassy? I heard it put this way, that killing Soleimani was equivalent to killing our head of CIA, FBI, and Secretary of State all in one shot.  We are in this mess because we refuse to obey the word of God. Of course there are all sorts of Just War Theory issues here, but I want to bring this down to this...because this is not often consider when talking about our foreign policies. The bible explicitly commands us not to bribe. Proverbs 21:14 says “A gift in secret subdues anger, And a bribe in the bosom, strong wrath.” Give gifts not bribes, and this should especially apply to the middle east. One last thing about the middle east. On Monday the Iraqi Parliament voted on a non-binding resolution to expel US military from the region. This of course is political as they are trying to appease the Iranian government while allowing for the protection they really want from the US troops. More of course will be developing regarding the Iran/Iraq story, so stay tuned.   Golden Globes If you missed the Golden Globes, like I gladly did, don't worry I still have you covered. To my delight, British comedian Ricky Gervias, was invited to host the Golden Globes. I have followed Ricky for a while, and sometimes his humor really gets my funny bone and other times he gets the trash can. But what is consistent about Ricky, is that he does not care what is cool and what is culturally acceptable, and that is what keeps me engaged with his Twitter account. As you know the Golden Globes is for the Hollywood elite to pat themselves on the back and pretend they have some sort of moral ethos that matters to America. Well, Ricky utterly destroyed that on Sunday night at the Golden Globes. I mean he just took all their logs and shoved them into their eyes beyond repair. For starters he lambaste Hollywood's friendships with Jeffrey Epstein and Harvy Winstein, and then ends with my favorite lines of the whole night:  Using Apple TV+ series “The Morning Show” as his jumping-off point Ricky said: “A superb drama about the importance of dignity and doing the right thing, made by a company that runs sweatshops in China…(obviously referring to the production of Apples iPhone and other devices) If you do win an award tonight, don't use it as a platform to make a political speech. You're in no position to lecture the public about anything. You know nothing about the real world. Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg. If you win, come up, accept your little award, thank your agent and your god, and fuck off,” Gervais concluded. It is moments like these where you are grateful for God's common grace in this world, where even unbelievers can smell the massive hypocrisy coming out of rank Hollywood. Hollywood is full of rampant abuse of women, children that grow up in Hollywood regularly tell the tales of the darkness of Hollywood, and the enormous amount of bad storytelling and movie flops that come out of Hollywood is astounding. We often give Christian movies a bad rap, but how many Christian movies come out every year? 2? 5? 10? 20? Well how many pagan movies come out of Hollywood and absolutely flop or are full of lascivious trash? Hollywood by far has the worst record. So, next time you see a Christian movie come out, just remember it was made with no naked women, no compromised actors, and probably produced with only a couple million bucks. Think twice about how you judge that Christian movie, and why you give Hollywood a pass on the quantity of trashy movies that billow out of their cameras. Christian movies need improvement for sure, and if they were putting out 100 movies a year, we might actually think differently about the Christian movie scene. Lastly, I want to bring to your attention what is happening here in Idaho regarding Idaho's fight to end abortion. As you know we have had Scott Herndon, the architect of our end abortion legislation here in Idaho, and the two sponsoring legislators John Green and Heather Scott on our show a couple times in the past two years. This is their second attempt to push end abortion legislation here in Idaho and the momentum is building. I believe they now have six sponsoring legislators, which is really really good. The latest development, is that Scott Herndon's efforts, which began under the umbrella of AbolishAbortionId.com, and they have now started a PAC out of this initiative. The purpose of Abolish Abortion PAC is to make direct financial contributions for re-election and election to the campaigns of legislators and candidates who will fight for the abolition of abortion through the Abortion Human Rights Act bill. If enough money is raised, the PAC can also support legislators and candidates through direct expenses not coordinated with the candidates' campaigns, such as direct mailers, newspaper and radio ads. A financial contribution by "Abolish Abortion PAC" will appear on all of the legislators' campaign finance reports (which people do read) and will send a clear statement that the people of Idaho, through their financial contributions, want abortion ended in Idaho, without compromise. To make your financial contribution to Abolish Abortion PAC, which will in turn be used to support our champion legislators, send a check payable to: Abolish Abortion PAC PO Box 916 Sagle, ID 83860 To stay up on what is going on visit http://www.abolishabortionid.com/. I think this is a great idea, and a good way to put your money where our desires are at and an opportunity to bless legislatures that stick their neck's out for this legislation. So, consider giving to this pack, even $10 so your names are on record for these legislators to see that you care. I know Scott Herndon and he is a godly guy with a great family, and pray God's blessing on the legislative session this coming year. Well that is all for now.   This is Gabriel Rench with Crosspolitic News. You can find this show and all the others on the Fight Laugh Feast Network at Crosspolitic.com or Fightlaughfeast.com.
