Send us a textAlright everyone, it's time for yet another theme and this time it's "Eyes Wide Open". This theme will deal with films where characters experience eye-opening moments, whether through shocking revelations or sudden enlightenment.Peeling back the eyelids first, with the shake-up of "must have a narrator" (pretty self explanatory) is The Usual Suspects, the 1995 action/drama/thriller/etc directed by Bryan Singer and starring Kevin Spacey, Benicio Del Toro, Stephen Baldwin, Gabriel Byrne, Chazz Palminteri and Kevin Pollak. We follow the tale of the sole survivor of a pier shoot-out who tells the story of how a notorious criminal influenced the events that began with five criminals meeting in a seemingly random police lineup.Of course in addition to our feature presentation we do a deep dive into daylight savings time, pick who would narrate our lives and Matt discusses his experience with invasive procedures.
This week Danielle and Kristine learn how to survive new methods of consuming absurd amounts of caffeine and Kevin Pollak joins us to enlighten us about his mom. When thinking about racial equality in sports, one immediately conjures up thoughts of young Jackie Robinson stepping between the lines to become the first African-American athlete in Major League Baseball in 1947.But what about the other major sports? While we hear so much about Robinson suiting up for the Brooklyn Dodgers, less is known about the other three major sports. While Fritz Pollard is credited for being the first African-American professional football player in 1920, the NHL's Willie O'Ree did not break the color barrier until 1958 as a member of the Boston Bruins.Perhaps the most diverse league in professional sports today, the NBA, wasn't always known for being a game for all ethnicities. As a tenet of proof, Nat “Sweetwater” Clifton, who had spent many years toiling for the independent Harlem Globetrotters, did not step foot on an NBA court to become its first African-American player until signing a contract with the New York Knicks in 1950. Without Clifton, there would be no Michael Jordan or Lebron James to cheer for today.Sweetwater,Clifton's inspirational story of overcoming a lifetime of barriers and racial discrimination is the subject of a new movie streaming on the Angel Studios app.In addition to my special guest, Everett Osborne, who stars in the movie as Nat “Sweetwater” Clifton, the film also features an all-star cast including Richard Dreyfuss, Jim Caviezel, Jeremy Piven, Kevin Pollak, and Cary Elwes.I recently sat down with Osborne to discuss why Clifton should be seen as a pioneer for racial equality in sports, valuable lessons that can be learned from his life and witness, and how his life can be seen as hope for tomorrow as well as today.
We're celebrating 100 episodes this week by returning to not one but two recurring themes from nearly two years of the podcast: the filmography of Steve Martin and the belief that February belongs to romance -- two concepts that combine decently well with some magical realism in our movie of the week, an absurdist take on life and love in Los Angeles that still feels like a cutting send-up of the city more than 30 years later. It's 1991's L.A. Story, directed by Mick Jackson, written by Steve Martin, and starring Martin, Victoria Tennant, Richard E. Grant, Marilu Henner, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kevin Pollak, Patrick Stewart, Frances Fisher, Iman, Larry Miller, Woody Harrelson, Rick Moranis and John Lithgow. So tonally cartoonish that it feels Martin is moments away from being crushed by a grand piano and popping out the top of it unscathed at any moment, that silliness conceals an earnest goodness about love, the universe, and everything finding a way to work out as it should. Are these beliefs that go hand-in-hand with the movie's wacky exterior, or does the film find itself at odds with itself? Find out, as we dive into a movie Hayley recently picked up on VHS. Plus: J Mo's still sore from having climbed into the wrestling ring over the weekend! If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along to our discussion, L.A. Story is currently streaming for free on the CTV app in Canada at the time of publication. Other works discussed in this episode include the video games Mario & Luigi: Brothership and Balatro, as well as TMNT: Mutant Mayhem, Only The Brave, 24, The Departed, The Nice Guys, Mission: Impossible - Fallout, Jurassic Park, the JJ Abrams Star Trek trilogy, the Disney Star Wars sequel trilogy, A Goofy Movie, Bowfinger, The Lonely Guy, Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, Cheaper By The Dozen, The Tooth Fairy and They Came Together. Feb2ary Is For Lovers continues next week as we run it back for another 100 episodes beginning with Nicolas Cage and Cher in 1987's Moonstruck, which may be the most readily available film we've ever covered as it's currently streaming on Amazon Prime, Crave, Starz, Criterion Channel, Tubi and Hoopla as we release this. Thank you so much for listening for 100 episodes, or however long you've been on the ride. We love you, and see you at the movies!!

We're back in action for 2025, and what better way to avoid thinking about the hellscape surrounding us than to travel back to a better time when Ashley Tisdale was one of our favorite it-girls, Kevin Pollak was finding steady character actor work, and LG flip phones were somehow still all the rage? The 2008 film "Picture This" has all these things and more! --- Edited by Jacob Miller Show logo by Marissa Thorburn Show theme by Andy HG and Tyler Green

This week on Saturday Night Jive we're gearing up for the 2024 election by watching a political comedy from 1995. Canadian Bacon is the only non-documentary directed by Michael Moore and it's a cold war satire about a fake conflict with our neighbors to the north. It's fine. It's the last movie released to feature John Candy's as he died the year before. It's got Rhea Pearlman obsessed with a building that looks like a penis. It's got Rip Torn yelling and grunting. It's got a pretty fun cast also featuring Alan Alda and Kevin Pollak. But most importantly it features cameos from two SNL alums in Jim Belushi and Dan Aykroyd. This is our last podcast before the 2024 election but due to an uploading issue it's being released a week later so enjoy that brief moment of time where we still had some hope. You can also watch this episode on YouTube (search Saturday Night Jive Podcast and you should be able to find it) as we recorded this live to YouTube when we thought we'd never be able to post a new podcast episode. Anyway, Enjoy!Full archive of all podcast episodes available at saturdaynightjive.blogspot.comEmail us anything at saturdaynightjivepodcast@gmail.comDownload Here
Spencer GarrettTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Spencer Garrett. In this episode, I get to know the actor and ow he got to where he is. We chat about his family, and what made him decide to get into show business. We trade Hollywood stories; although he has many, MANY more! We take a little detour, when Spencer tells me what he was doing between college and acting; while working in Washington D.C. Next we Talk about how and why he studied with Sanford (Sandy) Meisner, and how Spencer came to be in several of Emilio Estevez's film projects. From behind the scenes on some of the greatest films ever made, to some fun down time with Mike Nichols, and Dustin Hoffman; Spencer is full of stories. I ask Spencer about his involvement in the super popular scripted fiction podcast called America 2.0, and he hints there may be more on the horizon. That leads into an unbelievable story about a group of character actors who meet every month for dinner and have a BLAST together. The CADS, is a group of like-minded actors including: Michael McKean, Lawrence Fishburne, Steven Weber, Titus Welliver, Kevin Pollak, Richard Kind, and so many more! I want to attend this dinner just once!!. Make sure you check out Spencer in the upcoming Korean spy thriller on Disney+ called Tempest (2025), and tell him you heard him on Fascination Street Podcast!

Steve being a douchebag (albeit one who's relatively more bearable compared to the absolute vat of toxic sludge that Matthew McConaughey plays in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days), a jarring usage of the R-slur in this fluffy rom-com, and the truth of those brown M&Ms comprise a few of the talking points for this episode. *In the new documentary "Hendrie," some real heavy hitters, like Bill Hader, Judd Apatow, and Kevin Pollak, all discuss their admiration for Phil's unique and hilarious creativity. So, we decided this was the perfect time to reintroduce you to the interview he did for our show.* Phil Hendrie is not retired, not even a little bit. He's creating as much content as he ever has. But his story still resonates with happy retirees because he had to make a giant change in the middle of his career. In essence, that's what retirement is—a change. It doesn't mean you stop doing anything; it means you start doing more of what you've always wanted to do. After taking his radio show from a tiny local station to national syndication, Phil realized the business had changed. It was no longer viable to do comedy on the radio. So, he got creative and transitioned to a daily podcast instead. Because his talent was versatile, he also picked up acting roles and voice work in movies, television shows, animation, and video games. He even retained ownership of his old radio material to repurpose for fans who wanted to listen. Don't look now, but that adds up to multiple streams of income, and you know we love that on this show! The bottom line is that even though Phil Hendrie is not retired, his story can still inspire people who want to be. Between that and his comedy genius, this episode is a must-listen! Max Burkholder stars as the lead of Seth MacFarlane's critically acclaimed series TED, a prequel to the hit film franchise. He plays the leading role of “John Bennet” (the younger version of Mark Wahlberg's character from the films), a good-hearted teenager who is still in his awkward teenage phase. With Ted's help, John hilariously navigates adolescence, dealing with everything from first dates to high school bullies. Premiering on January 11, 2024, Ted launched as Peacock's most-watched original title ever through its first three days on the platform. Burkholder is perhaps best known for his portrayal of “Max Braverman” in NBC's long running award-winning series PARENTHOOD, from producers Jason Katims, Ron Howard and Brian Grazer. Here Max raised awareness while portraying a young boy with Asperger's syndrome. After the second episode aired, Asperger's was one of the most frequently searched terms on Google. He also played the lead role in Paramount TV's WHEN THE STREET LIGHTS GO ON for DGA, Oscar, IDA, and Emmy-nominated director Brett Morgen. His notable recurring roles include HBO's IN TREATMENT and BROTHERS AND SISTERS. In film, Burkholder starred in Debra Eisenstadt's hit Sundance comedy BLUSH opposite Wendy McLendon-Covey; and in the title role of BENJAMIN, alongside comedy veterans Rob Corddry, Kevin Pollak and Dave Foley. Burkholder began his career at a very young age in films including DADDY DAY CARE directed by Steve Carr, FRIENDS WITH MONEY directed by Nicole Holofcener, and a starring role in the Michael Bay-produced hit feature THE PURGE opposite Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey. In the world of voiceover, Burkholder has voiced characters on a number of hit series including Amazon Prime's INVINCIBLE, FAMILY GUY, THE CLEVELAND SHOW, AMERICAN DAD and THE LAND BEFORE TIME. It's Valentine's week, and hopefully no one has broken your heart. Growing up, what are your memories of romance? Grab some Sweetarts, and let's take a trip back. After getting dumped, highschooler Zach Siler (Freddie Prinze Jr.) makes a bet with Dean Sampson (Paul Walker) that he can turn introverted art student Laney Boggs (Rachael Leigh Cook) into the belle of the ball. This Pygmalion transformation is epic! Once Laney gets a haircut, takes off her glasses and puts on a dress, you will see her true ultimate form! Watch the school's cutie become “ALL THAT.” Now, nothing can stop her! Art houses, beach trips, parties, dances, etc… Is anyone doing any homework in high school? The cast list is impressive! Kevin Pollak, Anna Paquin, Kieran Culkin, Dulé Hill, Gabrielle Union, Elden Henson, Clea DuVall, Usher, and others make appearances. Matthew Lillard makes his fourth appearance in a film here! 4-peat! RTS consider joining the “dork outreach program.” La-Mar and Collin become part of a “brilliant” performance piece and then make sure the hacky sack doesn't drop. We hope love blossoms and you melt the heart of a “falafel fairy.”
The special council looking into some classified and top-secret documents found in President Biden's possession will not be filing charges in the case. Robert Hur's report on the matter came out yesterday. While he clears the president on one hand, with the other, he indicates the president is forgetful. In not charging President Biden, Hur reasoned it was because he would present to a jury as an elderly man “with a poor memory.” That may hurt in an election year where age is becoming an issue. Michael Shure will be along to talk politics. We will lighten things up with mega-9ers fan and Bay Área dude, Kevin Pollak. Plus fun with Friday Fabulous Florida and the Culture Blaster, Michael Snyder.

Holy moly, the 553rd ice-fish of Have You Ever Seen kicks off the Christmas season as Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau bring their crabby charm to the title characters. But the 2 comedy legends are only Grumpy Old Men with each other. They're quite sweet to everybody else, especially to each other's kids and---most of all---to the new babe in town, Ann-Margret. The love story between her and the 2 old coots is not an angle we fully believed in, partly because the decades-long feud is is the REAL love story going on here. Darryl Hannah and Kevin Pollak help make this movie work as well as it does because neither the script nor the direction by Donald Petrie are anything special. Still, we laughed, we ho ho ho'ed and we felt the cold in that small Minnesota town. So don't be a putz or a moron, but DO bring your recently-repaired fishing pole to a frozen lake as we give you the ins and the out(take)s of Grumpy Old Men. Well, Actually: Bev says in the skinny that John has a heart attack on Christmas Day, but of course that happens on Christmas Eve. The brilliant Kevin Pollak forgives Jay for being late, talks about poker, growing up in San Francisco, becoming Don Rickles' buddy, the loss of Matthew Perry, inventing podcasts and only does one Shatner impression on this week's “Don't Be Alone with Jay Kogen.”Bio:Kevin Pollak is an world class actor, respected comedian, delightful impressionist and one of the original podcast hosts. This absolutely gob smacked Peter; Jason casually mentioned he was originally cast as Lt. Sam Weinberg in Rob Reiner's Oscar nominated film, A Few Good Men. George Costanza alongside Jack Nicholson and Tom Cruise? Really, no really! So how did actor, comedian, impressionist, author, director, and podcast host Kevin Pollak nab the memorable Lt. Weinberg role…which ended up boosting his already growing credits? We needed to find out. So, we reached out to Kevin who has appeared in over 80 films; including the cult classic - The Usual Suspects as Todd Hockney and played Phillip Green in Martin Scorsese's Casino. Recently Pollak was a regular cast member on Amazon's The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. He's also a podcast pioneer hosting such classics as, Kevin Pollak's Chat Show, Talkin Walkin where he spoke only as Christopher Walken and most recently My Mrs. Maisel Pod. IN THIS EPISODE: “If you're not creating, you're waiting.” How A Few Good Men transformed his career. The secret to doing spot-on impersonations. The documentary “Misery Loves Comedy” explained. How Christopher Guest discovered he was funny. Did Jack Nicolson really hit on Kevin's mom? How directing is like being a prize fighter.
