A solocast from Fliss. It's been a few weeks since she spoke some thoughts in her head. And on this weeks episode she begins to unpick the narrative of "JUST" a hairdresser or barber. In her early years, Fliss certainly thought from the words of society, that it was a job for those who weren't so intelligent and that's why she was doing it. Because she wasn't smart enough to truly do anything else. But the truth is, hair pros are some of the most intelligent, intuitive and interesting people on this plant and it is time to speak proudly about all the roles we play as a hair pro.Because we are more than JUST a hair pro.Mentions: Emilie Wapnick's TED Talk 'Why Some Of Us Don't Have One True Calling', Dr Joe Dispenza on Mind Motivation Coaching, and Carol Black who will be on next weeks episode.A Wholeness Podcast is proudly sponsored by Earth & Soul Pizza in Bairnsdale. The education system in the United States has been mainly geared toward creating a neurotypical learning environment, but not everyone absorbs and processes information in the same way. In this episode, I talk with the amazing Erica Whitfield, a therapist and passionate visionary for creating neurodivergent-friendly schools. We explore the significance of movement in learning and processing information. Both children and adults can benefit from incorporating movement into their educational experiences. Erica sheds light on the importance of validation, patience, and understanding, particularly for neurodivergent children, to prevent meltdowns and foster a supportive learning environment. Here are three key takeaways: 1️⃣ Pursue your dreams: Erica encourages us to explore the dreams we haven't even imagined yet. By taking steps towards what truly aligns with us, we can experience joy and fulfillment in our lives. 2️⃣ Redefine education: We discuss the impact of segregating children into same-age peer groups and the consequences of imposing arbitrary learning timelines. Erica quotes Carol Black, highlighting the need for a shift in educational approaches and acknowledging the importance of movement in learning. 3️⃣ Embrace change: Erica shares her journey of pivoting and making hard decisions to create space for new pursuits. She reminds us that entrepreneurship is a journey of evolution and adaptation, and it's okay to change course as our passions and interests evolve. One thought-provoking moment from the podcast was when Erica asked listeners to share a word they'd never heard before. This exercise is a reminder that there are worlds of knowledge and dreams that we have yet to explore and imagine. To address the challenges faced by parents seeking inclusive and neurodivergent-friendly education, Erica is forming a team of like-minded individuals. This diverse team, comprising parents from different educational backgrounds, aims to raise awareness, advocate for change, and create classrooms that genuinely support every child's unique needs. Lastly, we explore the importance of pivoting and adapting as entrepreneurs. The realization that pursuing certain activities may no longer serve our goals can open up new avenues for creativity and fulfillment. By stepping out of our comfort zones and embracing change, we teeter on the line between fear and comfort, allowing ourselves to reach new heights in our profession.

Episode 13: In this episode of The Aware Parenting and Natural Learning Podcast, we discuss the documentary "Schooling the World" by Carol Black. This incredibly powerful movie interviews the villagers of Hemis Shukpa-Chen and other Ladakhi people, as well as Manish Jain, Vandana Shiva, Wade Davis and Helena Norberg-Hodge about the role of schooling in colonisation and the implementation of a centralised economy. As Helena Norberg-Hodge says, "99 percent of all the activities under the label of education come under a very specific agenda that grew out of the colonial expansion across the world by Europeans - and now the agenda is the same across the world, to pull people into dependence on a modern, centralised economy and to pull them away from their own independence, their own culture and self-respect." In the podcast, we share the feelings we felt when we first watched the movie and the effect it had on our own natural learning journeys. We discuss the ideas raised, such as how poverty is created, the role of indoctrination, how people are pulled out of their lineage and culture and the effects of this. We talk about loss of language and the deep sadness and outrage we experienced watching the movie and seeing children being punished for speaking their original languages. We talk about what we learnt about elders being taught to believe that they know nothing, and how reading and writing becomes valued as the only form of language. We found this a really powerful episode to record. Jim Bailey took a roundabout path to teaching, earning his bachelor's degree and teaching certificate when he was 31, after a peripatetic career as a cowboy and surfer. He feels these real-world experiences have given him a richer, deeper context for his teaching. He's now been teaching 20 years in Ojai, including both private and public schools, and is the founder and director of Rock Tree Sky, which provides enriching experiences for students age 5 to 18. This Ojai Living Treasure and science educator has partnered with the Ojai Unified School District for an innovative program during the pandemic, which might become a model of expanding education and experiential learning. Though teaching during a pandemic has "made an awesome job more difficult" Bailey feels confident that this current cohort of students will make their adjustments and snap back to typical classroom collaborations and experiences. His self-directed, student-led approach has won many admirers and given his students the skills needed to lead a rich, fulfilled life. We also talk about Bailey's circuitous journey to Rock Tree Sky, his inspirations and how he is still in contact with the young lady surfer who he saved from a sure drowning nearly 20 years ago. We did not get around to talking about Game of Thrones, the invention of algebra or Korean horror films. The compelling case for reimagining schools is not difficult to make. It's a combination of common sense and a clear understanding of how the changes in the world are creating new challenges and opportunities for learners both in and out of school. In other words, the compelling case is built on a sense of urgency that comes both from what we know and what we don't know. That's the discussion that Bruce Dixon and I are having in this our 54th episode of the Modern Learners Podcast as we get back behind the microphones after a short hiatus for travel and invention. If you're looking for some really challenging conversation about the purpose of schools and what the future requires of our kids, I'm thinking you'll really enjoy this discussion. Just to whet your appetite a bit, here's a quote from a powerful speech we reference from Carol Black: So, one of the weirdest characteristics of education in our society, and there are a lot of them, but one of the very weirdest, a lot of indigineous people from around the world will tell you, is that our approach to education is extraordinarily authoritarian. It is obsessed with compulsion and control. So the child in a modern classroom, may not move, speak, sing, laugh, eat, drink, read, write, think her own thoughts, look out the window, or even use the toilet without explicit permission from an authority figure. (UPDATE: Just realized that most of this speech is adapted from her post "A Thousand Rivers.") And, from Yuval Harari's new book: The best advice I can give a 15-year-old is: don’t rely on the adults too much. Most of them mean well, but they just don’t understand the world. As always, we'd love to hear your thoughts in the comment thread below. Enjoy! All students should have access to challenging coursework that lets them grow in their areas of interest. Later, listeners have recommended Science/Fiction, a blog post from Carol Black. We look at her comments on learning styles, evidence-based instruction, and institutional racism. We have several disagreements with her argument, but find that our common ground is much more important. Do we have an evaluative gaze in schools? In this episode, Bruce and I discuss a powerful essay written by Carol Black titled Children, Learning, and the Evaluative Gaze of School, one that discusses the very real effects on kids of a culture of surveillance and assessment. Some of the questions we kick around: Why have we gotten to this point where we want to monitor and assess every mood and movement of kids? How do we provide more of a balance for students between their school and personal lives? How do we break out of traditional narratives and habits to start with a different question? How do we start with the question "Is this good for kids?" How do we start a process for bringing people together to hold different conversations around our interactions with kids? We also chat about some first steps that school leaders might take to create some new conversations forward in their communities. Would love to hear your thoughts.

Carol Black was an overweight child who, aged 13, put herself on a diet. Now, as an expert advisor to the government, she's the woman behind recent newspaper headlines suggesting that obese people who refuse treatment could see their benefits cut. In the last decade, Carol has conducted several reviews on work and health, sickness absence and how best to help people with obesity, alcohol and drug problems get back into the workplace. In 2008 she suggested the Sick Note should be replaced with a Fit Note which states what people can do rather than what they can't. Later she recommended that an independent assessor should decide who is, or is not, Fit for Work. Dame Carol Black talks to Jim Al-Khalili about the challenges associated with advising government on these controversial issues; and how, despite relative adversity and several bad decisions, she achieved such a position of power and influence.
