What does it mean to meet the wildness of the world in ourselves and in our medicine? Can we be brave enough to hand our safekeeping over to the wildness of the world? What is the medicine we are really craving anyway? In this episode with the brilliant Jimi Wollumbin, we discuss the massive angst and anxiety of the modern culture and how coming into relationship with the Forest within and without might just be the Medicine we are looking for. As herbalists and plant walkers, perhaps our duty of care is larger than the rash or ear infection of our patient; perhaps we have a duty to invite our people into the wildness of the world.Get more of Jimi's Teachings here:https://www.doctorjimi.com/personal-mentorshiphttps://jimiwollumbin.learnworlds.com/courses

Hello friends! This week I introduce you to Susan Hensley, who, at the end of our conversation, was surprised to understand that a couple of the stories she shared this week had to do with storms, or tempests...those wild weather events that sometimes shake us to our core! Susan shares a really potent story of what happened on a family vacation in Hawaii, and how she emerged on the other side of that vacation irrevocably changed. It's the perfect time to share this quotation from THE TEMPEST by Shakespeare, “We are such stuff as dreams are made on, and our little life is rounded with a sleep.” We are made of dreams, little ones, and understanding that, I think, gives us that much more power over our lives. Understanding that we are made of stardust, dreams, wishes and hopes, and that all of this combines to create each of us in such singular ways...well, the sky's the limit for how we can shape and create beauty in this reality. Never forget that! To check out Susan's website click here. And to buy her book, click here. I don't know about you but I LOVE a good storm...and photos of storms? THE BEST! So here is a link to 12 astonishing images of clouds, storms, lightning, waterspouts, you name it, to float your boat!

Send Catherine a text MessageWelcome to episode one of the new (7th) season of Myth Matters! A new year and a time of change. Is this, as some say, the time of the wise, elder woman, the time of the crone? The Baba Yaga is one face of this archetypal energy. This episode is the first of two about the Baba Yaga. Baba Yaga is a complex and multifaceted figure in Russian and East Slavic fairy tales. She's a scary crone with roots in the pre-Christian pagan goddesses that we now call "mother earth," and expresses the warmly maternal dimension of nature and the fierce wildness. She seems to be full of contradictions. She holds the key to the mysteries of life. Here we explore some of her complexity through the three of her many stories: "Baba Yaga and the Kid," "The Step Daughter and the Step Mother's Daughter," and "The Geese and the Swans." In this episode of The Peripatetics, we explore the interplay of shadow and light — how each shapes and reveals the other, and ultimately defines the contours of our lives. Following Thoreau's assertion that “the hours of darkness are as necessary,” we enter the shadows, considering their role not as absence, but as a vital source of restoration and clarity. Host Trey Hill shares stories of crossing personal thresholds – moments when testing limits required courage, and unearthed connection and meaning. From a midnight adventure through the vast American West to the lessons gleaned in the darkroom, he examines how experiences of struggle and hardship can transform into sources of unexpected light. Along the way, we encounter the discoveries of Joseph Niépce, a photographic pioneer, reflect on the timeless wisdom of Marcus Aurelius, and ask if the name of one of Japan's best selling automobiles has anything to offer this story. So, join our journey along shadowed paths, as we test the limits of our light, and admire the hidden vistas of meaning waiting to be developed within the dark chambers of our own experience. Transcripts of all episodes are available here. Find Trey on Instagram. Episode Themes Include: The Necessity of Darkness: Inspired by Thoreau's reflections, this episode explores how the hours of darkness — both literal and metaphorical — are essential for restoration, creativity, and growth. We delve into the role of shadows, sleep, and unseen forces in shaping our understanding of life. Testing Limits: Through stories of personal adventure and rebellion, this theme considers the importance of venturing beyond the boundaries imposed by society, nature, and ourselves. It's in these moments of daring that we rediscover our untamed rhythm and learn the art of self-governance. Extracting Light From Shadow: Drawing on the photographic innovations of Joseph Niépce, the episode examines the interplay of light and shadow, illustrating how what seems like irrecoverable darkness can reveal the brightest truths about who we are and the world around us. About The Show Inspired by the ancient tradition of walking philosophers — from Aristotle and his followers to Thoreau and Nietzsche — who walked as a way to engage deeply with their thoughts and ideas, The Peripatetics wanders through th e thoughts of great thinkers in nature, art, literature, and philosophy as they intersect with the simple, transformative act of walking. (Insight Meditation Society - Retreat Center) An updated version of a talk given at the IMS Forest Refuge in August of 2024
"I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wish to practice resignation, unless it was quite necessary. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life.” (Henry David Thoreau, Walden)In 1845, when he was 27 years old, Henry David Thoreau walked a ways from his home in Concord, MA and built a small house on a small lake—Walden Pond. He lived there for two years, two months, and two days, and he wrote about it. Walden has since become a classic. A treasure to naturalists and philosophers, historians and hipsters, conservationists and non-violent resistors. Something about abstaining from society and its affordances, reconnecting with the land, searching for something beyond the ordinary, living independently, self-reliantly, intentionally, deliberately.Since then, Thoreau has risen to a kind of secular sainthood. Perhaps the first of now many spiritual but not religious, how should we understand Thoreau's thought, writing, actions, and way of life?In this episode, Evan Rosa welcomes Lawrence Buell (Powell M. Cabot Professor of American Literature Emeritus, Harvard University) for a conversation about how to read Thoreau. He is the author of many books on transcendentalism, ecology, and American literature. And his latest book is Henry David Thoreau: Thinking Disobediently, a brief philosophical biography and introduction to the thought of Thoreau through his two most classic works: “Walden” and “Civil Disobedience.”In today's episode Larry Buell and I discuss Thoreau's geographical, historical, social, and intellectual contexts; his friendship with Ralph Waldo Emerson; why he went out to live on a pond for 2 years, 2 months, and 2 days and how it changed him; the difference between wildness and wilderness; why we're drawn to the simplicity of wild natural landscapes and the ideals of moral perfection; the body, the senses, attunement and attention; the connection between solitude and contemplation; the importance of individual moral conscience and the concept of civil disobedience; Thoreau's one night in jail and the legacy of his political witness; and ultimately, what it means to think disobediently.About Lawrence BuellLawrence Buell is Powell M. In this episode of The Peripatetics, we return to the theme of wildness with Thoreau as our guide. Reflecting on instinct, the raw power of wild nature, and the human struggle to reassert our own “native rights,” we explore the deeper tensions between civilization and the untamed spirit within. Through personal stories of transformation and a re-wilding experience in the heart of Kenya, we delve into the sharp contrast between the forces that seek to control and those that preserve the wild. From domesticated animals breaking free to the untamable intellect, we ask: What happens when we lose touch with our wildness, and how do we reclaim it? Join us as we unravel the rhythms of nature, creativity, and the self, weaving together reflections on art, vocation, and the harmony found only in the wild. Transcripts of all episodes are available here. Find Trey on Instagram. Episode Themes Include: Reclaiming Our Native Rights: This episode explores the concept of wildness within, drawing from Thoreau's vision of domesticated animals reasserting their native rights. We examine how humans can reclaim their instinctual power, breaking free from societal constraints and rediscovering their true nature. The Contrast Between Wildness and Civilization: Through personal stories and philosophical reflection, this theme contrasts the raw, untamed forces of nature with the rigid systems of industry, religion, and academia that seek to tame the human spirit. The episode asks how these forces shape, and sometimes suppress, our creativity and freedom. Wildness as a Creative Force: From the savannahs of Kenya to the inner landscape of the human soul, this theme explores wildness as a source of artistic and intellectual power. The episode reflects on how reconnecting with the wild leads to a more authentic expression of self and art. We continue Walking with Thoreau through the wild terrain of uncivilized thought — where genius shatters the temples of knowledge, exposing the unseen forces shaping our reality. Thoreau reminds us that it is the wild, uncultivated mind that truly delights, as free and swift as a mallard in flight. In this episode of The Peripatetics, we explore the invisible connections that bind us — atomic thoughts dancing like pollen on a pond, elusive yet undeniable. From the rediscovery of an ancient poem, lost for a thousand years, to my own realization of the creative life's atomic nature, we delve into the tension between certainty and wildness. We examine how long-suppressed ideas, once freed, can spark revolutions in thought, science, and art. Our journey turns toward the question of the untamed intellect's role in creativity and the quest for truth itself. Through poetry, philosophy, and personal revelation, we ask: What does it mean to make the darkness visible, and how can we reclaim the wildness within us all? Transcripts of all episodes are available here. Find Trey on Instagram. Episode Themes Include: The Unseen Forces of Genius: This episode explores the invisible elements that drive creativity and knowledge. Through Thoreau's lens, we encounter the wild, uncultivated thought that shatters conventional understanding, revealing the unseen forces that shape our reality, much like atomic particles that move beneath the surface. The Tension Between Certainty and Wildness: Drawing on the rediscovery of Lucretius' On the Nature of Things, this episode delves into the friction between structured knowledge and untamed intellect. It highlights how suppressed ideas, once unleashed, have the power to revolutionize science, philosophy, and art. Creation as a Manifestation of the Wild: By reflecting on personal revelations about the creative process, the episode likens creation to the atomic nature of existence. Creativity is not about bringing something from nothing, but about connecting wild, seemingly invisible thoughts and making them visible. Making the Darkness Visible: Inspired by Thoreau's words, the episode explores the act of illuminating what is hidden, both within ourselves and the world. This theme weaves through poetry, philosophy, and personal reflection, asking how we can uncover the truths buried in our subconscious and wild nature. The Power of Untamed Thought: Through Thoreau's celebration of wild thinking, the episode questions the role of untamed intellect in the pursuit of truth. It challenges the listener to reclaim their wildness, to look beyond the domesticated structures of knowledge and rediscover the deeper truths that lie beyond civilization's grasp. Wildness as a Catalyst for Creative Thought: The episode presents wild, uncivilized thinking as essential to artistic and intellectual breakthroughs. By embracing the unpredictability and spontaneity of wild thought, we open ourselves to new ways of seeing and understanding the world, much like the way atomic theories reshaped our view of the universe. On the tensions between our inner worlds and the external identities we often adopt to fit in. How societal expectations and personal fears can lead us to suppress what's most true about us, and the importance of reconnecting with the "wild energies" within our souls. This week we explore how creative practices, changes in routine, and mindful engagement with everyday tasks can help us wake up to our innate aliveness. We reflect on the balance between necessary social conventions and the gifts of discovering our own unique expression, and propose that we each find a way to honour "wonder of their own presence" and bring our unique life force into service to the world around us. Here's our source for this week: The Wildness In Our Hearts Every human person is inevitably involved with two worlds: the world they carry within them and the world that is out there. All thinking, all writing, all action, all creation and all destruction is about that bridge between the two worlds... Each one of us is the custodian of an inner world that we carry around with us. Now, other people can glimpse it from [its outer expressions]. But no one but you knows what your inner world is actually like, and no one can force you to reveal it until you actually tell them about it. That's the whole mystery of writing and language and expression — that when you do say it, what others hear and what you intend and know are often totally different kinds of things. One of the sad things today is that so many people are frightened by the wonder of their own presence. They are dying to tie themselves into a system, a role, or to an image, or to a predetermined identity that other people have actually settled on for them. This identity may be totally at variance with the wild energies that are rising inside in their souls. Many of us get very afraid and we eventually compromise. We settle for something that is safe, rather than engaging the danger and the wildness that is in our own hearts. from an interview with John O'Donohue Photo by Linda Xu on Unsplash

With a good dose of levity, Kelley and Terry outline how Faith Choice Ohio plans to stay engaged in the fight for reproductive health, rights, and justice after Ohio passed the monumental 2023 ballot initiative, acknowledging that the fight is far from over despite new changes to the state's constitution. Drawing on the ancient legend of Romulus and Remus, Thoreau unearths the primal tension between wildness and civilization with his famous declaration: “In Wildness is the preservation of the World.” In this episode of The Peripatetics, we journey through the mythic origins of Rome, explore its eventual fall, and come face to face with the wild forces that shape individuals and empires. Along the way, I share personal reflections on my childhood at the edge of the Pineywoods in Texas, questioning whether any wildness remains within us in an increasingly domesticated world. Transcripts of all episodes are available here. Find Trey on Instagram. Episode Themes Include: The Tension Between Wildness and Civilization: The episode delves into how wildness provides the raw strength needed for civilizations to rise, but also contains the seeds of their eventual downfall. This theme explores how the primal forces of nature and humanity are both essential and destructive, depending on how they're wielded. The Paradox of Wildness: Wildness is presented as a contronym—simultaneously representing freedom and danger, nurturing and chaos. This duality is central to understanding how wildness functions in both nature and civilization, as well as in our individual lives. The Loss of Wildness in the Modern World: There's a personal reflection on whether the wildness within us has been lost due to the domestication of modern life. This mirrors the broader story of Rome, where civilization grows disconnected from its wild roots, ultimately leading to its vulnerability. The Cycle of Rise and Fall: Rome's mythic origins and eventual fall illustrate a broader truth about the cyclical nature of history—civilizations and individuals are nourished by wildness, but they often lose their way as they seek control, leading to their decline. Reconnecting with Wildness: The episode questions how we can rediscover the wildness within us—whether by exploring natural environments or through our everyday interactions with the untamed aspects of life. This theme invites a deeper reflection on how we can cultivate a balance between wild and civilized impulses. The Role of Nature as Teacher: Throughout the episode, nature is depicted not just as a force to be controlled or feared, but as a guide and nurturer—offering insights into the essence of humanity and the importance of humility in the face of natural forces. Join us as we delve into the deep connections between nature, culture, and identity, revealing how the untamed world continues to shape our inner and outer landscapes. In season 1, we are discussing Henry David Thoreau's definitive essay on the subject of walking, connecting it with wisdom from a wide swath of philosophic tradtions which share his devotion to achieving clarity and peace through movement. Whether you're a fellow walker, someone looking for a bit of tranquility, or just curious about how a good walk can change your perspective, you're in the right place. May your path be smooth and your pace steady. Helen Mark heads to the Shropshire hills to discover how to write about nature at The Hurst, a place dedicated to artistic practice. She meets author-tutors Miriam Darlington (Otter Country, Owl Sense) and Patrick Barkham (The Swimmer, Wild Isles) who share with Helen their techniques of encouraging new writers to find their own voice and how to turn observation and reflection into a compelling story. As she wanders through the summertime meadows with the group of budding writers, she hears how they hone their skills of attention and why writing about the natural world matters to them. Helen also gains a sense of this pocket of the natural world within the landscape, finding out about the other species who call these Shropshire woodlands and gardens home. The Hurst is run by the Arvon Foundation who promote creative writing. Producer: Eliza Lomas for BBC Audio, Bristol

When you think of wisdom, what do you usually think of? On the thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost, Lilly Ettinger sees in Wisdom not boredom, over-spiritualizing, or dry asceticism, but joy, celebration, and a way of seeing clearly. Wisdom is an invitation to really live. [Proverbs 9:1-6] Reflection How does the imagery of Wisdom building a house and preparing a feast invite me to live this week? How do the metaphors of Wisdom resonate with my understanding of spiritual nourishment and growth? What does the invitation to “Leave your impoverished confusion and live!” (The Message) mean for me? Have you ever felt judged by someone? Can you remember that pain of feeling misunderstood? Cast out? And separate? Usually the people in judgement don't know the whole story. They don't know the truth of who we are or what we've been through. And usually the people who judge, are themselves in some kind of pain. I imagine you can relate to that truly awful feeling, especially if you identify as highly sensitive. It's enough to make one want to attack back, or worse, go into hiding or shame. I've been thinking of Mary Magdalene this week, as her Feast day approaches. Eight years ago Pope Francis declared July 22 as a Feast Day for Mary Magdalene, honoring her role in Jesus' life as “The Apostle of the Apostles.” Many of you may know of her as she was named by the Catholic Church long ago - as a prostitute or whore. She was judged, and as what happened to many powerful women, her name was dragged through the mud. But the truth is she was an absolute equal to Jesus in his ministry. There came a time, in the first few centuries that the Bible was changed, and stories of powerful women were taken out of it. And the Church didn't want people to think that Jesus was human - that he had a beloved, instead they wanted to portray him as this divine being that could only be accessed through the Church. That way they could keep the power. So any stories depicting Jesus as a partner, a beloved, a lover and husband to Mary, were removed. Powerful women were seen as a threat in her time. Women were mysterious - they carried the gifts of new life inside their bodies, it was something men were not capable of, or even fully understood. When women joined together the men felt even more threatened (what is more powerful than a coven of women woven together by the same beliefs?) So whether it was conscious/intentional or not, the women were systematically shamed. First they shut down their power center - their womb - by shaming their sexuality. Then their menstrual cycle was seen as dirty, a burden or a curse. Bearing children, and giving birth was seen as a punishment. The women were deemed inferior. A woman was confined to the home. And sadly, when a woman shuts down in her womb center, she often shuts down her voice. I believe Mary knew one day though that her name would be restored, that one day thousands of women would awaken and carry on her legacy, of being powerful and embracing that power, as teachers, guides, healers and claiming their place as part of a larger movement. I believe she knew one day these women would reclaim the power of their menstrual cycle… The holiness of conception, pregnancy and birth… And through healing, would find their voice. But not only that, I believe that she also holds the codes of forgiveness. She reminds us to feel all the pain of the past, and to release judgement of others, even when we feel judged. To remember that those who are causing pain are also in deep pain themselves. I believe she had compassion for those who shamed her, dragged her name through the mud, even for those who wanted to persecute and kill her. There's so much we can learn from Mary, and her embodiment. I wanted to share one of the audio lessons in my program, The Way of the Priestess about her. This weekend, let's honor Mary, her sacred teachings and all she embodied. Listen to this recording to learn more about the practice of feeling our pain, a forgiveness process, seeing sexuality as sacred, our bodies as temples and how to embody a consciousness of abundance. I first came across the work of Laura Waterman while conducting research on the origins of the Appalachian Trail. As many of our listeners are surely aware by now, I completed a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail in 2022, and am currently working on a 10-episode documentary radio series about the AT's history and cultural influence in partnership with New Hampshire Public Radio. I was seeking information about the history of trail building in the Northeastern US, where the first modern long distance hiking trails were born, and I found everything that I was looking for in “Forest and Crag” by Laura and Guy Waterman.“Forest and Crag” is a comprehensive history of Mountain climbing in the Northeast - it is dense with information, but with a writing style that is accessible and compelling. Despite being first published over 35 years ago, it remains the best resource on this topic by a long shot. I was looking for someone to interview for my podcast series, so I also conducted research on the authors of this book - Laura and Guy Waterman. What I found was a story even more fascinating than the history of trail building laid out in “Forest and Crag”.I began reading Laura Waterman's first memoir, “Losing the Garden”, and the story of Laura and Guy's truly unique life together began to unfold in front of me. While the two of them were writing “Forest and Crag”, they were living in a rural Vermont homestead in a cabin they built themselves with no electricity or plumbing. They lived like they were in the 19th century for almost 30 years, until Guy's depression intensified, and he decided to take his own life in the year 2000.But this wasn't a typical suicide. Guy drew Laura into the planning of this effort to take his own life, and Laura, seeing no other option, went along with Guy's plan. Guy ultimately chose to die by exposing himself to the elements on a winter hike of the Franconia Ridge - the site of the iconic New Hampshire ridge-line trail that Laura and Guy had maintained for almost 20 years.Laura published her first memoir “Losing the Garden” in 2005, but felt that she had left unanswered questions about her decision to go along with her husband's plan to commit suicide. Her second memoir, published just a few months ago, “Calling Wild Places Home”, seeks to answer these questions, adding depth to the story of Laura's truly unique life. Now 84 years old, Laura shares her reflections on the past, on aging, and the evolution of her writing style. It was truly and honor for me to have the opportunity to speak with Laura Waterman, and I hope that you enjoy the conversation as much as I did!-Matt Podolsky Get full access to Earth to Humans Podcast's Substack at earthtohumanspodcast.substack.com/subscribe
A vital tenet of the NeuroAffective Relational Model (NARM) is that, no matter how withdrawn or isolated one becomes due to complex trauma, humans remain instinctively and spontaneously drawn towards connection, just as plants are drawn towards the sun. Standing next to you, is a gray wolf, with gleaming amber eyes that see into your soul. PAUSE The wolf nods, then leaps into the air. Instinctively, you follow, leaping high into the sky, until you and the wolf become one. PAUSE Now, imagine if you can, that, as the wolf, you run across the rocks and wood with such speed and grace that your paws barely touch the ground. As a wolf, you hear, see, and understand the world around you. PAUSE Running free as a wolf allows your natural wildness and innate fierceness to unfold and open in you. You are free. You are fierce. PAUSE And now imagine that you stop running, and when you do, you find your wolf pack. Notice how loving and devoted you are to your cubs Notice your devotion and loyalty To the other wolves in your pack. Your wolf nature brings you balance, balance between fierce freedom and loving loyalty. PAUSE Take a moment to breathe. And, as you return to the present as yourself, there's an acknowledgement of change. From this day forth, you carry the spirit of the wolf– that spirit of wildness and freedom– that spirit of love and loyalty– with you always. because you and the wolf are one. NAMASTE, BEAUTIFUL
