Drum was considered to be the first African lifestyle magazine with a readership of 40,000 in its 1950s heyday. It was first printed in South Africa in 1951 and became a voice of resistance during Apartheid. Drum hit newsstands in 12 countries across the continent after former World War Two pilot Jim Bailey bought the publication after the first two editions flopped. Jim changed the focus by telling African stories by African writers and shining a spotlight on music, culture and life in the illegal drinking joints known as shebeens.Black writers including Henry Nxumalo, known as Mr Drum, were credited with revolutionising journalism and literature in South Africa. Reena Stanton-Sharma speaks to Jim's son Prospero Bailey. Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive. Witness History is for those fascinated by the past. We take you to the events that have shaped our world through the eyes of the people who were there. For nine minutes every day, we take you back in time and all over the world, to examine wars, coups, scientific discoveries, cultural moments and much more. Recent episodes explore everything from football in Brazil, the history of the ‘Indian Titanic' and the invention of air fryers, to Public Enemy's Fight The Power, subway art and the political crisis in Georgia. We look at the lives of some of the most famous leaders, artists, scientists and personalities in history, including: visionary architect Antoni Gaudi and the design of the Sagrada Familia; Michael Jordan and his bespoke Nike trainers; Princess Diana at the Taj Mahal; and Görel Hanser, manager of legendary Swedish pop band Abba on the influence they've had on the music industry. You can learn all about fascinating and surprising stories, such as the time an Iraqi journalist hurled his shoes at the President of the United States in protest of America's occupation of Iraq; the creation of the Hollywood commercial that changed advertising forever; and the ascent of the first Aboriginal MP.(Photo: The Drum Office in 1954. On todays show:THINGS YOU SHOULD DO FIRST THING IN THE MORNING TO BE HAPPIER ALL DAY:❑ Pick a wellness habit, and link it to one of your morning rituals: It could be meditation, deep breathing, reading, or exercise. Perhaps add the deep-breathing thing to the time you spend making the bed after your shower. ❑ Get your phone out of your room: You've heard this before. No screen time in your room. If you reach for the phone or other device first thing, you're letting the outside world dictate your mood for the day.❑ Talk to yourself: Self-talk can be very conducive to helping you overcome whatever obstacles you face in the coming day. It's even better if you use your own name out loud. ❑ Talk to someone else: Make a social contact with somebody you like. This could be a spouse or child, a friend, an extended family member, almost anyone. A call or a text will work, but meeting for coffee will give you a big boost to start your day. ❑ Incorporate gratitude: People who journal about the things they're thankful for have been shown to score much higher happiness scores those who kept track of things that irritate them. OLD CUSTOMS THAT ARE HARD TO IMAGINE TODAY:☞ A kid in a car without a child seat: It wasn't that long ago that this was legal. In France, for instance, child seats have only been mandatory since 1992. For Canada and the US, it was the 1980s.☞ Checking your cash before going out: Before bank cards, you wouldn't dream of leaving home without cash. Credit cards didn't become popular until the 1970s. In the 1980s, ATMs popped up everywhere.☞ Buying a newspaper every morning: In movies, we often see the commuter faithfully picking up the morning paper on the way to the office. Of course, the internet changed that.☞ Throwing away plastic bottles: Recycling hasn't always existed as we know it today. While plastic bottles are everywhere, we're increasingly aware of the need to recycle them.☞ Having a tooth pulled by your barber: That's precisely who pulled out damaged teeth after dental care instruments were invented in the 16th century.☞ Watching movies at specific times: Remember waiting for the exact time a movie would be shown on TV? And tough luck if you missed it! Thanks to streaming, the way we watch shows and movies has been transformed.☞ Corporal punishment at school: Not only do laws now prohibit it, society sees it as barbaric. Current teaching methods favor non-violent means of discipline.☞Smoking in restaurants: You knew this was coming. Smoking sections first appeared in in the 1990s (US). Eventually, smoking was banned in all public places, including restaurants.GERMINATING GERMS:While it's true that these days, it's hard to go anywhere without seeing hand sanitizer stations available, there are other, far more sinister sources of germs than doorknobs and handrails. In fact, scientists are warning of 7 common spots where bacteria are thriving. In fact, these areas, places you might never suspect are hotbeds for microbial life, are all germier than the average toilet seat, according to science…1. Smartphones: When did you properly clean yours last? They are likely a key source of bacteria entering the body.2. Kitchen sponges: One study even found that the average kitchen sponge carries more bacterial species than a lab Petri dish.3. Water bottles: Reused water bottles can contain mold and bacteria, especially if they aren't washed thoroughly.4. Fountain soda water: The water lines from these things are usually teeming with bacteria, researchers say. That includes salmonella and E. coli.5. Handbags: Consider all the bacteria-laden items that get stored inside the bags, none of which are routinely cleaned.6. Self-checkout screens: They are touched by so many dirty fingers,...

Jim Bailey, founder and director of Rock, Tree, Sky - an immersive school located in upper Ojai, has been a key participant in an exciting new approach to education, called Education Reimagined. Jim was among the invitees of distinguished educators who attended a seminal conference in Rhode Island earlier this year, called "Exploring Ecosystems in Community: Insights, Questions, and Collaborative Learning." Bailey, who came to Ojai several decades ago as a science teacher and who has also taught at Oak Grove School, is known as an influential, transformative teacher, so he was exactly the kind of educator we need reimagining education for the modern era. He said the approach is to "work for the many, for all learners, not just some; we need to bring in more student agency and self-determination." We talked about the many lessons he's learned as a caring, thoughtful teacher, and how it's possible to ignite a love of lifelong learning in unexpected ways. The wide-ranging discussion touched on key issues that confront Ojai and a society at large. We did not talk about pickerel mating habits, Japanese salt cures or the shifts in ocean currents. When you consider the fact that John Zak has had a career as a professional musician for over 45 years, despite being born with a chronic lung condition that at one time had his parents believe that he would be on an iron lung by the time he was 16, and that by the time he was in high school his first music teacher failed him and said that he would never make it, it is truly remarkable what he has managed to achieve during his musical journey! John was born in South Australia and grew up living in the Norwood area. He always loved music and at first thought that he would be a singer, that was until he took a liking for the drums after being inspired by The Sweet, so in 1976 his dad enrolled him to have lessons at 'John Reynolds Music City' with Robert Lloyd. His father then wanted to see if he could go further so he arranged for him to go and have lessons with another of my previous guests Jim Bailey, John accredits Jim as being the reason why he made it in the music industry. Being a student with Jim Bailey meant that John was gigging well before he left school, playing with various ensembles at the Dom Polski Centre and at the Festival Theatre. His first professional gig was with The Hot Boys, he then joined The Pits who eventually became F.A.B who had quite a bit of success in the mid 80's, they released a single called ''Happy People/The Fastest Song In All The World '' in 1985 on the RCA label, Produced by Eddie Rayner of Split Enz. This led to them playing their first big event "The Big Swing" which was held at Football Park, appearing on the same line-up as The Models and INXS. Thanks to former F.A.B singer/songwriter/guitarist Stuart Day for putting me in contact with John so that I could interview him. When F.A.B disbanded they became a popular cover band called Division 4. It was around this time that his fellow band mate bassist Warwick Cheatle had been to see the Zep Boys play, he told John that the Zep Boys were looking for a new drummer and bass player, so they joined the band and went on to play and tour with the band for 11 years, this includes the first time that the Zep Boys teamed up with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra to perform the music of Led Zeppelin. John has also performed with the ASO performing the music of Pink Floyd and Queen. In 1996 Frank Corniola went to see John play with the Zep Boys and invited him to come to Melbourne to play at the Ultimate drummers Weekend Festival, Frank was impressed with his playing and suggested that John move to Melbourne and come and teach at Drumtek which he did, John has lived in Melbourne ever since. In Melbourne John has worked with a variety of artists, he was the touring drummer for Graham Bonnet and Glen Hughes, was a member of another band that almost made it big called 'Subsonic Symphonee', they were about to be signed by LA socialite and philanthropist, Daphna Ziman, but unfortunately their Australian Manager disagreed with Daphna's request for the band to change their image and refused to sign the contract, when he heard what had happened John and the guitarist left the band. John has continued to play with a variety of Melbourne bands including Flame Trees, SCAT, and Earthling777 just to name a few, he currently plays with Damon Stone in the bands 'STONE' and 'The Internationals'. John works as a production assistant/stage manager on corporate events with Kojo and The City of Stonnington. Music intro "Band It About" theme song, written and recorded by Catherine Lambert and Michael Bryant. Outro "To be a Man" by Earthling777. Alex Deegan's obsession with drumming began when he was living in Whyalla attending Primary School. His teacher Sister Bernadette invited a drummer to come along to class with his kit to do a talk about drums, Alex put his hand up when the drummer asked if anyone would like to have a go at playing, and despite never having the opportunity to play before he managed to do an impressive roll down the toms to which the drummer responded by saying that he should take some lessons as he had a natural talent. He began to have lessons with that drummer which mainly involved watching him play for an hour, needless to say those lessons didn't last for long with Alex being keen to have more of a hands on role. Alex began performing live at the age of 8, with his earliest memory being drumming in the school play. His brother Ray also decided to play the drums and when the family moved to Seacliff their dad converted the garage into a practice room and they got their first kit, this was a problem as unlike Alex, Ray was left-handed. Alex was addicted to playing, would rush home from school so that he could beat his brother home. His sister Christine noticed how keen he was and suggested that Alex start having lessons, their parents agreed and Alex began having lessons at John Reynolds Music City with Greg Mundy. After a year or so Christine had a chat with Greg to see how Alex was progressing, Greg advised that he had taught him as much as he could and that if Alex was to progress further that he should begin to have lessons with another teacher. At 13 years of age Alex studied with renowned Adelaide percussionist Jim Bailey and he continued with Jim up until Alex left Adelaide for the first time. Alex joined his first professional band 'Idiot Stick' when he was 15, their first gig was at the Tivoli hotel. Alex having been an avid reader of 'Modern Drummer Magazine' for many years, began playing a drum solo when the guitarist had to replace a broken string. When he finished playing he was introduced to one of the other bands on the bill 'The Touch', who were looking for a drummer, he joined and at 18 years of age they began touring. Alex's career has seen him perform all over Australia having lived and worked in the music scenes of Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne where he has resided since 1995 after being invited to audition to play for 'Out Of Control'. He began working and teaching at DRUMTEK, and eventually writing articles for Australia's #1 Drum Magazine DRUMscene after coming second in the Best Up & Coming Drummer Competition. Throughout his career Alex has toured, recorded, and co-written with many bands and artists both nationally and internationally. Some of Alex's achievements include: Australian Platinum Number 1 Single "Wasabi" by Lee Harding, Award winning albums by Australian Country Artists Carter & Carter and Sue Boyd, MTV Awards performance with American Pop Artist Teddy Geiger, Touring nationally with Sony Artist Marie Wilson, on call session drummer for Birdland studios in Melbourne, Guest artist on "Australia's Ultimate Drummers Weekend 2004" internationally released DVD with 'Dom & Friends', Featured artist on "Australia's Ultimate Drummers Weekend 2003" internationally released DVD. Music "Band It About" theme song, written & recorded by Catherine Lambert and Michael Bryant. Outro "Tonight" by SHADOWQUEEN. Start off talking about how I had to turn off Facebook memories because it's almost been one year since my pops passed away. The hero law enforcement officer in Orange County that cloned three stories to save a babyMy interview with author James Bailey who turned out to be the most interesting guest I've ever had on the show. He talks about his friendship with Mel BrooksHis struggles with mental illness and OCDAll the maxing celebrities he got a chance to meetThe time someone peed on him after a drunk night Jim Bailey is a Gulliver walking the nooks and crannies of a beach community simply trying to sell his books, do his research, and find a port where he can write the Next Great American Novel and Worldwide TV Series – only to meet the weird, the wacky, and the odd - person or situation which may or may not get him back in time to switch his car to the other side of the street before the cops tow away his sleeping quarters. And the Power of O.C.D. Cannot Be Denied: Jim Bailey's diary reveals A Don Quixote of a Writer-Against-All-Odds: An artist on foot, sleeping in his car, struggling to push his great work of written art up the steep hill of Competition, Access, and The Marketplace. Or: Tilting at sun worshipers, book-readers, the homeless, agents, or producers he meets on his daily rounds of beaches, coffee shops and the rear aisle of bookstores he sneaks into trying to sell his books. Great characters. A funny read. One minute Jim is meeting a famous actor in a Malibu bookstore and the next minute he's fighting off a psychotic street person. Undaunted he goes from one book store to another and will not leave unless he finds at least one customer to purchase his book. Along the way he meets Bob Dylan and Pierce Brosnan and many other celebrities that purchase his book. He ended up selling thousands of books, “One book at a time” and ended up with a movie option. Julie Gerard's interest in a healthy, plant-based lifestyle began with her surviving a cancer scare, which she attributed to her food choices. So along with a dedicated cohort of like-minded people including Heath Perry, Steve Sprinkel, Michelle Lopez-Dohrn and Grace Malloy, she's been trying for years to open Ojai's second farmers market. After a few abortive attempts she found success this past spring with Thursday's Certified Farmers Market in Chaparral High School's courtyard. The festive field of 60 vendors selling of farm-fresh produce, local products and hugely popular sandwiches and wood-fired pizza has quickly proven to be an established part of Ojai's cultural scene, despite the pandemic and other obstacles. More than just a place to buy healthy, fresh foods and products, it has become a community gathering place, where people come together to play, participate and learn about important issues. Gerard, a local attorney, credited the Ojai Unified School District's superintendent Dr. Tiffany Morse and her staff, along with Jim Bailey of Rock Tree Sky School with positive attitude and perseverance with their success of getting the effort off the ground and its momentum. A long-time visitor to Ojai, Gerard knew early that she was going to move to Ojai to raise her children. After making her own dream come true, she is now dedicated to creating a sustainable "foodshed" in Ojai and for our future generations. If you have visited the market, you know it's bursting with the sights of sounds of children laughing and playing and learning. We did not talk about FDR's Supreme Court-packing scheme, Victorian amateur scientists or Roman siege weapons. http://www.ojaicertifiedfarmersmarket.com/

Adelaide Drummer/Percussionist PAUL BUTLER joins me in The Engine Room this week to discuss his musical journey which began at an early age due to being born into a musical family. Paul's parents had been performing for many years and through their involvement in the industry, it was a given that he too would follow this path. As a child, Paul was fascinated with drums, and he first began to play them when Steve Staben offered to teach him. He was 10 years old when he first began playing at church services, and in year 6 he began taking drum lessons with Don Crook, his teacher at Sunrise Primary School and Temple Christian College, through to year 11. Paul joined his first band (away from the church) 'Spank n Funk' when he was in high school, he also began teaching after having done work experience with Don. In year 12 he began to study percussion with acclaimed teacher Jim Bailey, helping him to prepare for auditioning for The Adelaide Elder Conservatorium of Music. Jim Bailey was the Head of Percussion at the Elder Conservatorium, where Paul successfully gained the David Galliver Memorial scholarship and won a number of prizes at national percussion eisteddfods. Paul was percussion section leader of The Elder Conservatorium Wind Ensemble, and member of The Symphony Orchestra and Percussion Ensemble. Paul completed his study achieving his Bachelor of Music and Honors in Percussion Performance. Jim mentioned that the Band of the South Australia Police were looking for someone for an upcoming event and asked Paul if he would be interested which of course he was. Paul enjoying playing with them and when he heard that they had an opening he successfully auditioned. Paul worked with the band for 7 years and during this time he gave workshops to schools, performed at numerous state events and official government ceremonies in a variety of groups, Parade Band, Wind Orchestra, Dixie Band, Big Band, Rock Patrol, School Beat Band and Percussion Ensemble. Highlights include the Sensational Adelaide Police Tattoo 2006, the Commonwealth Bank Police Tattoo 2008, Musikschau der Nationen 2008 in Bremen, Germany, and the Basel Tattoo 2010 in Switzerland. Paul has also played the corporate and club scene of Adelaide; he was resident percussionist at Savvy Bar and Vodka Bar. He has also performed with: The Baker Boys, The Revue, Bloky's Boys, The Attack, Wasabi, The Shizzle, Triple Score, Astronaut 7 Mammoth Logic, Squeaker, Porkie Pies, Matt Winter Band, and The Rules. As a freelance artist he has worked with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, Adelaide Arts Orchestra and played numerous shows throughout the Adelaide Fringe Festival, WOMADelaide, Cabaret Festival, and Feast Festival, alongside such names as Jon English, Todd McKenney, Cameron Daddo, and Julie Anthony. Paul's introduction to 'Cirque du Soleil' was through Ben Todd who had been performing with the company and suggested he audition. Paul auditioned but wasn't successful, a few months later he was invited to audition again, this time he was, so he gave the military band his notice, packed up and went overseas to join his first Cirque show 'Corteo'. Paul was with that show for 5 years touring through Europe, South America, Central America, and Mexico. He then auditioned for KOOZA, and was on that show for 3 years touring Australia, Asia, Singapore, China, Korea, and Europe. Paul joined KURIOS after another audition and was excited to be touring with this show as they were bringing the show to his hometown Adelaide in 2020. They performed in Sydney and Brisbane before remaining dates were postponed due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. Paul will be re-joining Cirque overseas early in the new year. Drummer/Percussionist/Music Educator James (Jim) Bailey joins me in The Engine Room to discuss his fabulous musical journey both in Australia and overseas. Jim first became interested in music while living in England, he wanted to play the clarinet, but the school didn't have any available, so he was given a piccolo to take home to try. He didn't have much luck with this instrument, so he returned it to the school and then went back to playing sports which he was very good at. It wasn't until after his family had emigrated to Australia and he injured his foot during a game that Jim's interests once again returned to music, this time he decided to try drums, having seen an advertisement for a free aptitude test at the Adelaide College of Music. He began private drum lessons after meeting the drummer Jimmy Latta at the Boomerang Club. Jimmy introduced him to the world of modern jazz, making him aware of the playing styles of many of the world's greatest drummers. Jimmy moved to Canberra after joining the Australian Army Band. Jim then began to have lessons with one of Adelaide's leading players Gary Haines. Gary was a studio musician for Channel 9, and he also ran a business called Drumsville in Club Lane, which was the place that all of the young drummers would hang out. It was during this time that Jim decided that a music career was the path he wanted to pursue, so he quit his job and you took up part time work in the record department at David Jones. In 1965 he successfully auditioned to attend the Elder Conservatorium Single Studies program in classical percussion, where he was taught by Richard (Dick) Smith, who was a timpanist for the South Australian Symphony Orchestra, Dick ran the percussion program at the Conservatorium. Jim is regarded as one of Australia's leading teachers of classical and Latin percussion as well as jazz drumming. He has performed and taught throughout Australia, the United States, South Africa, Hong Kong, and Indonesia. A short list of his credentials includes: Performances with the Hong Kong Philharmonic; the Durban, Natal Symphony Orchestra; the Australian Youth Orchestra; the Australia Ensemble Lights; the Elder Conservatorium Wind Quintet and the Elder Conservatorium Wind Ensemble. His festival appearances include the Adelaide Festival, Barossa Festival, Manley Jazz Festival, Glenelg Jazz Festival, Standard Bank Jazz Festival in Pretoria, South Africa and the Living Treasures Festival 2000 in Durban South Africa. He toured South Africa with the world music group Warkala, performing and conducting master classes and workshops for the Australian High Commission and in fund-raising concerts for the relief of AIDS in children in South Africa. He is also Australia's foremost authority on the tuning and construction of mallet instruments — marimbas, vibraphones, and glockenspiels. All marimbas used in the group were made by him. Throughout his long career Jim has made an outstanding contribution to the percussive arts and education both here and overseas and has trained some of Australia's top percussionists during his teaching career as the Percussion Senior Lecturer and Head of Percussion at the Elder Conservatorium of Music. In 2011, Jim became the first Australian to be awarded the Lifetime Achievement in Education Award from the International Percussive Arts Society. The award recognises the contributions of the most highly regarded leaders in percussion education throughout the world. Prior to Covid, Jim spent many years traveling to be a guest speaker and teacher at various educational organizations worldwide. Sue Filmer joins me this week in The Engine Room to discuss her musical journey which began with Sue being a trained dancer. Sue was born in New South Wales and moved to Adelaide when she was 20 to attend the only Contemporary Dance Course on offer in Australia at the time, which was at Flinders University. Sue worked in various jobs while studying and at one stage was employed to dance at events in Adelaide, prior to joining her first band 'Click Clack' as a percussionist. Sue has always loved music, right from her earliest memories of going to see her father who was a professional musician in NSW, performing with the Elizabethan Orchestra, Jazz with Jim Barnard, Black & White Minstrel Shows, Big Bands, Opera's and Ballets. Sue took up percussion in her 20s, she was sharing a house with musicians and wanted to be able to jam with them, so she began having lessons with Jim Bailey. Sue continued to play with various bands until taking time off to raise her 2 daughters. In 2016 after being encouraged by her husband and brother to start drumming again, Sue and her husband Danny began performing together as the Duo SUEDAN. The duo perform Blues/Roots and World Music, they also run an Open Mic once a month at the Ekhidna Winery, McLaren Vale. Make sure that you subscribe so that you don't miss the next episode. Jim Bailey took a roundabout path to teaching, earning his bachelor's degree and teaching certificate when he was 31, after a peripatetic career as a cowboy and surfer. He feels these real-world experiences have given him a richer, deeper context for his teaching. He's now been teaching 20 years in Ojai, including both private and public schools, and is the founder and director of Rock Tree Sky, which provides enriching experiences for students age 5 to 18. This Ojai Living Treasure and science educator has partnered with the Ojai Unified School District for an innovative program during the pandemic, which might become a model of expanding education and experiential learning. Though teaching during a pandemic has "made an awesome job more difficult" Bailey feels confident that this current cohort of students will make their adjustments and snap back to typical classroom collaborations and experiences. His self-directed, student-led approach has won many admirers and given his students the skills needed to lead a rich, fulfilled life. We also talk about Bailey's circuitous journey to Rock Tree Sky, his inspirations and how he is still in contact with the young lady surfer who he saved from a sure drowning nearly 20 years ago. We did not get around to talking about Game of Thrones, the invention of algebra or Korean horror films. Where do you start with someone so mythological as her? Gloria recommends the "Battle Hymn of the Republic" from the Judy Garland show. You will be changed. We then dive into some questionable artistic choices regarding race and the institutionalized racism that led Judy to those choices. If people want to cancel her, Gloria asks, "how can you cancel someone who's dead?" Lol. Gloria then expounds on the connection, or lack thereof, between Judy's death and the Stonewall Riots. But if she was still alive, Gloria, and all of us, would love to see her on Broadway. One of her many unfulfilled dreams. Can you imagine her as Harold Hill? We love to see it!
