In this tribute to her father, delivered at the Evangelical Library in London, Lady Elizabeth Catherwood fondly recounts Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones's strong affinity to books and reading. She begins by recalling some of her memories of her father, who always had a book in his hand. She recalls a beach holiday, where all her family was playing and enjoying the sun, sand and water in beach attire, but her father was fully clothed in a suit, sitting quietly by a rock reading “The Divine Imperative”. “Everyone took reading as a part of him” she states. Lady Elizabeth then goes on to list some books and aspects of reading that Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones disliked: paperbacks, digest and encyclopedias, over-concentration on “style” in books, agonizing over words, novels, and wrong intention for reading. Next, she lists the positive aspects of Dr. Lloyd-Jones's reading such as his phenomenal memory, the amazing breadth and depth of his reading, his ability to point out dangers in books, and the variety in his reading (both basic and elaborate). She then expands on Dr. Lloyd-Jones's favorite genres to read, that being Welsh hymns (as he was "a true Welshman"), church history, biographies, and of course, the Bible. To end her tribute, she speaks on how her father had confidence in his faith on his death bed. He had fought a good fight. He had finished his race.

In this moving tribute, Sir Fred Catherwood shares personal memories and insights from his 28-year relationship with Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, first as a member of his congregation, then as his son-in-law. With warmth and reverence, Catherwood reveals the lesser-known dimensions of the renowned preacher's character—his intellectual brilliance as a theological teacher, his warm family relationships, his generosity of time and resources, and his vision for Christian ministry. Beyond the austere pulpit presence that many knew, Catherwood paints a portrait of a man whose theological depth was matched by genuine human warmth, whose reformed convictions were inseparable from passionate spirituality, and whose diagnostic precision in medicine transferred seamlessly to spiritual matters. This intimate glimpse into Dr. Lloyd-Jones' life and ministry demonstrates how his influence extended far beyond Westminster Chapel into international student movements, personal mentorship relationships, and family life—always characterized by a remarkable gentleness that belied his powerful public persona.

Today, I am joined by Gretchen Catherwood to hear about the progress that has been made on the Darkhorse Lodge project. Show Resources Darkhorselodge.com Main content of the show Once completed, there will be five, 5 bedroom guest cabins, each room named for one of the 25 men lost from the Marine Corps' 3/5, Darkhorse unit. When our 19 year old son, LCpl Alec E Catherwood, was killed in action on October 14, 2010, it felt as if the world had ended for us. After realizing that we wouldn't honor him by giving up, I stayed up nights, wondering what I could do for those who did come home. Once I had the basics down, my husband added improvements to the plan. Finding my new purpose in life has given me a reason to get up each morning and face the challenges ahead. We will need A LOT of money to complete our build. 5 guest cabins, a staff cabin, and a shower house/dining facility (named for US Army National Guard, Specialist Tim Bowman, who committed suicide on Thanksgiving Day, 2005 after returning home from Iraq). Our employees will be combat veterans as well, including those who will take the participants fishing at one of the most beautiful spots in the south (oh yeah, we'll need boats and gear donated as well). The buildings at Darkhorse Lodge will be handicapped accessible to accommodate as many of our veterans as possible. Gretchen Catherwood Make it a Great Week! GUYS! In this episode, Doug and Greg talk with Jamie Catherwood, Client Portfolio Associate at O'Shaughnessy Asset Management. Jamie has a deep fascination with and expertise in finance history. Throughout the years, he's shared finance content that goes in-depth to help investors make better and more evidence-based financial decisions. Jamie talks with Doug and Greg about the importance of financial history in strategizing portfolios, and insights on innovation entering deep value territory. Key Takeaways [02:30] - Parallels between the current market and the past. [05:01] - What does history tell us about the change in behavior of retail investors? [07:49] - What's the Kindleberget Minsky Cycle? [09:06] - The Price Conviction Paradox. [12:35] - The Golden Age of Fraud [ 13:57] - Historical investment cycles. [17:35] - Where can the market go wrong? [23:35] - Are innovation stocks in deep value territory? [26:25] - What is the bubble triangle? Quotes [33:27] - “I think that the government has some role in markets, but obviously too much of a presence can kind of stifle innovation. Too much regulation can hurt markets, but I think there definitely needs to be some level of regulation because otherwise, frauds would be able to persist with kind of no threat from anyone stepping in.” - Jamie Catherwood [39:52] - “Once you read enough about financial history and you kind of see all these crazy bubbles, it kind of gives you more perspective and makes you step back and say, ‘Is this going to be one of those? And it makes it easier to not get swept up in the next hot thing.” - Jamie Catherwood Links Jamie Catherwood on LinkedIn @InvestorAmnesia Price Conviction Paradox by Jamie Catherwood Nasdaq 100 Peloton Russell 1000 James Chanos | Yale School of Management Wall Street power player: We're incentivized to cheat A Minsky-Kindleberger Perspective on the Financial Crisis Tesla Ark Innovation ETF Innovation Stocks Are Not in A Bubble: We Believe They Are in Deep Value Territory by Catherine Wood Wirecard Target Boom and Bust: A Global History of Financial Bubbles by John Turner and William Quinn GameStop Connect with our hosts Doug Stokes Greg Stokes Stokes Family Office Subscribe and stay in touch Apple Podcasts Spotify Google Podcasts LagniappePodcast.com Disclosure The information in this podcast is educational and general in nature and does not take into consideration the listener's personal circumstances. In the near future, the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland has been completely closed, guarded by sensors and military drones. It is illegal for anyone to cross over. Two people from either side of the technological border meet by chance and discover what life is like on the other side, whilst also coming to realize how divided their two countries have truly become. It is not a debate many outside the UK are aware of, nor is it that well known today within Britain. But the consequences of the impassioned address given by 'the Doctor', Martyn Lloyd-Jones of Westminster Chapel, at the October 1966 National Assembly of Evangelicals, are argued over to this day. He had been given the topic of ‘unity' and explained his incomprehension at believers working in denominations that weren't simply mixed but full of people who actually denied the gospel. So he appealed for people to come out to work in some kind of loose network or partnership. Immediately afterwards, the chairman, John Stott stood up and challenged the premise and appeal. It was a watershed moment for the British Church. Andrew Atherstone does a good job here at putting it into its wider context. Not many people know that in the gallery at that event was an 11-year old boy, sitting with his mother to watch his grandfather speaking. And he is the guest on this episode of The Stott Legacy! Christopher Catherwood is a modern historian (who has specialised amongst other things on Winston Churchill). But it is his memories as Martyn Lloyd-Jones' grandson and as a friend of John Stott that is the reason for talking with him here.
