AOL finally shut down its dial-up service—but the real story? Many companies are still treating AI like it's 1999. In this episode, the team explores what it takes to move from experimentation to transformation in the age of ambient AI. Knownwell CMO Courtney Baker, CEO David DeWolf, and Chief Product & Technology Officer Mohan Rao dive into the biggest challenge facing leaders today: AI isn't just a tool—it's becoming the environment we work in. So why are so many organizations still “sneaking downstairs” to test it in isolation? Then, Pete Buer speaks with philosopher Dr. Pia Lauritzen. She explains that the real existential risk of AI is not extinction, but losing what makes us human. She argues that blindly optimizing for speed and output might cost us the deeper questions that drive true progress. All of that PLUS Pete has another edition of AI in the Wild. This week, he breaks down the latest MIT report on AI's impact on jobs: most displacement is happening in offshore and outsourced roles—for now. Plus, only a sliver of AI investments are delivering ROI, and that's mostly through efficiency, not innovation. If you're still piloting AI in a silo, this episode is your wake-up call. Chips notes that we have yet to see that level of commitment from a play calling perspective from KOC. Chad and Chip then talk about the Twins and what the rest of the season looks like and if any major changes will be made in the offseason. They both think the organization will just run it all back next year, Chip doubts that fans will be on board… but what else is new? Discussion about Gopher football and the Strib's new investment in high school sports coverage wrap up Chip's visit.

In honor of AOL Dial Up internet service shutting down, we reminisced about our first screen names.
Amy Earnhardt and Dale Earnhardt Jr. are back in the studio for another Bless Your ‘Hardt and this week we're covering it all, from theme party chaos to the end of an internet era. Amy's got a spicy party idea that sends Dale into a story about the wildest places people have ever wanted an autograph (yes, it's exactly what you think). Then we pour one out for AOL dial-up because watching something be born and die in our lifetime is a little emotional, okay? Plus, we play another round of Gen Z slang and dive into all your #AskAmy questions.

No, it's not sharing your live location by default, so take a rest from those social media chain letters. We're also pouring one out for AOL Dial-Up: believe it or not, 1% of US internet users were still relying on this! Plus: Trump's authoritarian move to federalize the police force in D.C., and the implications that move has for first amendment rights. We also tackle the latest CDC data showing the U.S. fertility rate has hit a historic low. What's behind the drop, and why are politicians and pronatalists freaking out? We unpack the cultural, economic, and personal reasons more people are choosing to go child-free, and the absurdity of thinking. that restricting access to healthcare and a bigger tax credit can fix it all. It's a TV-centric recommendations kinda week: ABC Summer Games (Andrew), 'Hurricane Katrina: Race Against Time' on Hulu/Disney+ (Laura), and 'Outlander: Blood of My Blood' on Starz (Pam). And in this week's installment of After Dark: Inspired by our findings in the main show that Instagram's new Maps feature is not sharing your location by default, we're asking ourselves... how much info is TOO much info to share? Location sharing may be a modern convenience, but it's also inspiring friend group drama and a ton of privacy fails. Should we be more deeply concerned about how much we're willing to share (and stalk) via location apps? And right on cue, a revelation is made on air that creates jealousy on the panel re: location sharing. Oops! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Advancements like our smartphones and the Internet have significantly impacted our lives. It's hard to imagine the time before the Internet. Kids today don't know what life was like before the Internet. A small part of the Internet is going away, specifically the one that once helped get us onto the Internet. AOL announced it's dropping dial-up modem service at the end of September. Most of us haven't used dial-up modems since the early 2000s. The debate over whether AI chipmakers should be allowed to sell their products to China has taken an unusual turn. The US government has reportedly given NVIDIA and Advanced Micro Devices permission to make the sales but for one big catch: 15 percent of the sales. In other news, AOL said it will discontinue its dial-up service on September 30, officially marking the end of an era in Internet history. It may come as a shock to most that AOL still runs its dial-up Internet service, but some thousands of users still rely on this outdated method as an affordable way to access the Internet in more rural areas. Back in the 90's, when FM radio was already a well-established medium, we were just being introduced to the wonderful world of dial-up internet. Now, one is about to die. Try to guess which!
n their latest "MobileViews 574" podcast, hosts Todd Ogasawara and Dr. Jon Westfall navigated through significant tech news and offered practical advice. A notable development discussed was the discontinuation of AOL's dial-up internet access on September 30, 2025, marking the end of an era for the once-pioneering service. The conversation also touched upon Microsoft's decision to retire its Microsoft Lens app from iOS and Android devices, effective September 15, 2025, with full support ending November 15. Todd, who uses Lens to de-skew photos of doodles and whiteboards, is now seeking alternatives, with suggestions including Microsoft 365 Copilot app, OSS Document Scanner, Genius Scan, and Google Lens. This led to a humorous digression about the differing "personalities" of AI tools like Microsoft Copilot and Google Gemini. Shifting to essential tips, Dr. Westfall provided a comprehensive "back-to-school tech roundup" for students. Key recommendations included USB drives with encrypted partitions for secure and compatible file transfer, and small thermal printers such as the Phomemo M04AS for quick, inexpensive prints like QR codes or notes. A Belkin 2-in-1 MagSafe Wireless Charging Dock was suggested for convenience, supporting iPhone's StandBy mode. For car-owning students, a portable jump starter (like the NOCO Boost GB40) and a mobile tire inflator (such as the DENVIX Tire Inflator) were highlighted as essential safety tools that also function as power banks and lights. Practical, inexpensive items like a packable rain hat (e.g., Soxbang Waterproof Bucket Rain Hat) and a towel were also recommended for unexpected weather. Finally, both hosts emphasized the critical need for a backup plan for all critical technology, leveraging cloud storage and considering extended warranties, along with the "three-day rule" for assignments to mitigate stress. This last point was underscored by observations about some students' reluctance to even use two-factor authentication for campus email due to perceived inconvenience.
Send us a textThe strategic art of dialing friction up and down to protect your sanityFriction Management?Friction management is the work of boundaries, and it might just be your secret weapon against overwhelm. In this episode, we dive deep into how technology has reduced friction in ways that are actually making your life harder, and what you can do about it.The Problem: When "Convenience" Creates ChaosEpic Chat, Teams, and other instant messaging systems were designed to make communication easier. But here's what actually happened: they removed the friction involved with interrupting you, creating a constant stream of non-urgent interruptions while you're trying to provide patient care.Picture this: You're in the exam room with a patient, fully focused on their care, when ping "Mrs. Jones checked in 17 minutes late for her 20-minute appointment. I know the cutoff is 15 minutes, but should we see her anyway?"Now you're the bad guy. The front desk person avoided their discomfort with enforcing policy, Mrs. Jones gets to bypass the boundary, and you're left making split-second decisions while trying to care for the patient in front of you. This is friction management gone wrong.Where You Need to DIAL UP the Friction1. Non-Urgent Staff CommunicationsStop answering every ping immediately. Create friction by:Simply not responding to non-medical, non-urgent messagesUsing auto-responses: "I am currently seeing a patient and cannot answer non-urgent questions. If this is a medical emergency, contact [appropriate person]."Making staff think twice before interrupting you2. Patient Portal MessagesWhen patients send you multi-paragraph messages with complex medical questions, increase friction by responding with: "Thank you for your questions. These are important and I'd love to discuss them with you. Please schedule an appointment."You are not resourced to spend 5-10 minutes crafting thoughtful responses to detailed medical questions outside of visits. This isn't about not caring—it's about sustainable practice.3. Difficult Patients Who Constantly DisagreeYou're allowed to set boundaries with patients who:Never agree with your medical adviceCan't communicate effectively with youContinue returning despite constant disagreementLet them know they're welcome to seek other opinions or see different providers. You don't have to be everyone's doctor.4. Non-Medical Tasks That Don't Light You UpWhen asked to join committees, plan parties, or take on leadership roles you don't want: "I'd be happy to participate, but I'll need dedicated admin time blocked from my schedule to do this properly."Make it more expensive (in time/resources) for them to voluntell you.Where You Need to DIAL DOWN the Friction1. Warlocks, Mystic Arcanum, and Our Deeply Cursed MySpace Past – Now Optimized for Maximum Emotional Damage! Tired of forgetting what Tyler said about multiclassing back in 2021? Want to relive the glory days of your favorite hot takes, Warlock rants, and deeply cursed jokes? Good news! RPGBOT.net is proud to announce that archived episodes of the RPGBOT.Podcast are now available on YouTube. That's right—every mispronounced spell, every wizard tangent, every moment of Tyler realizing he's said something horrible is now accessible. Search “RPGBOT Podcast” on YouTube and hit that play button like it owes you an Eldritch Invocation. A huge thanks to our guest, Gabe Greenspan — actor, writer, professional chaos gremlin, and the only person brave enough to optimize Warlocks and still talk about MySpace unironically. Gabe's insight runs as deep as his playlist is unhinged, and if you enjoyed this episode, you need to check out his other work: Total Party Skill – where razor-sharp theorycraft collides with chaotic actual play Tabletop Tunes – the ultimate soundtrack for your bard, your boss fights, or your brooding warlock vibes And learn more about Gabe at gabegreenspan.com, where the comedy's punchy, the projects are plentiful, and the bio page probably isn't haunted. Probably. Because let's be honest—every optimized Warlock deserves a killer theme song and a guest appearance from someone cooler than their DM. Show Notes This episode, we go from Dial-Up to Die-Resonance. The RPGBOT crew welcomes back Gabe Greenspan for part 2 of the Warlock optimization series using the D&D 2024 ruleset. After a brief trip down memory lane to the pixelated glory of MySpace Top 8s and AIM away messages, the conversation dives headfirst into Warlock mechanics from level 10 all the way to 20. Tyler, Randall, and Ash—plus Gabe—discuss spell selection, Mystic Arcanum picks, Eldritch Invocations, and the emotional weight of choosing your level 20 capstone. There's an alarming amount of love for spells that make you omnipresent, and maybe a bit too much nostalgia for the early internet. You'll laugh, you'll optimize, and you might question your teenage social media presence. From the philosophical (“What does it mean to be a Warlock?”) to the practical (“Why is Misty Step still doing so much work?”), this episode gives you the strategy, humor, and memes you need to build a Warlock that slaps—whether you're blasting, hexing, or sipping potions made of regret. Key Takeaways MySpace Trauma is Real: The team explores how early internet experiences shaped their current personalities... and also their spell lists. Spell Selection Is Everything: Choosing the right spells is like curating your Top 8—deeply personal, slightly toxic, and possibly game-breaking. Mystic Arcanum = Late Game Power: Learn which spells will turn your Warlock from “mysterious loner” into “arcane juggernaut.” Leveling with Purpose: Level 10 through 20 contains major decision points that define how your Warlock handles endgame content, narrative moments, and group synergy. Multiclass Temptations: Warlocks continue to be the gateway class for players who want to dip a toe in every magical pond. Warlock 2024 Is Glowing Up: The new rules breathe life into a class that was already beloved. Now it's leaner, meaner, and finally makes sense at higher levels. Meta Humor + Mechanics = RPGBOT: Balancing crunchy optimization with existential jokes is our specialty—and also the entire episode.
