There was a time, decades ago, when politicians where astounded every time they went online and discovered – to their glee – they had mail. Like Harry Reid – here's the Democratic Senator from Nevada on October 27th, 1999: "Today, it's hard for me to comprehend what has taken place in the advancement of science. At home at my computer, I go home at night and see if I have received any e-mail on my computer. It is easy to do. I open my computer, and it says, ‘'You've got mail.' I open that up and find out who has contacted me by email, and it is like magic. I press a button, and I can reply to that person as quickly as I can type that message out. That message is sent quicker, of course, than the speed of light. It is gone." Senator Reid said getting mail online was like magic -- suggesting powerful forces summoned by the supernatural. But it really was just dial up internet service provided by America Online. Now AOL is shutting down that relic of the 1990s … and with it goes that once ubiquitous phrase -- "You've got mail." … It may be officially gone, but for C-SPAN's podcast "The Weekly" – "You've got mail" lives on – No mourning here, just celebration…Which we'll do in this week's episode – as we remember a brave new tech world decades ago, when politicians were dazzled every time they dialed up and discovered – They had mail. Who were these politicians – and what did they say? Find out in C-SPAN's "The Weekly." Find C-SPAN's "The Weekly" wherever you get podcasts. Learn more about your ad choices. He concludes with a powerful message for men of America, emphasizing the values of justice, mercy, and humility as outlined in Micah 6:8.
It's a somber day in Chicago, but the boys crack open a beer, reflect, and push through together. The never-ending summer heat has made marathon training miserable, and with race day just a week away, the nerves are real. As always, things wrap up with much-needed feel-good stories to brighten up these crazy times.

Send us a textEver wonder why some marketing cuts through the noise while most fades into oblivion? G Ranasina, CEO of Caxino marketing agency and a veteran marketer since the days of AOL CDs, reveals the uncomfortable truth about what's wrong with modern marketing."Marketing bros think all you need is to throw data into some AI engine and have it vomit out a thousand clichéd images," Ranasina explains with refreshing candor. "But what's missing is the idea, the concept, the emotional connection." Drawing on decades of experience helping over 400 startups across 20 countries, he articulates why the fundamental principles of marketing remain unchanged despite technological revolution. The conversation takes a fascinating turn when Ranasina distinguishes between efficiency and effectiveness in marketing. While other business units can optimize for efficiency, marketing requires emotional resonance that can't be quantified in dollars. "We've exorcised creativity from the equation," he laments, explaining why $1.6 trillion in marketing spending with increasingly sophisticated targeting tools has resulted in decreasing effectiveness. For podcasters and business owners alike, Ranasina offers a compelling perspective on standing out in a crowded marketplace. "You need to have the balls to be different, to be distinctive in your category," he advises, citing brands like Liquid Death that embrace their uniqueness rather than blending into the background. His insights on why we're "feeling creatures that think" rather than "thinking creatures that feel" provide a psychological framework for creating marketing that works.Whether you're looking to improve your marketing strategy, grow your podcast audience, or simply understand why some messages stick while others don't, this episode delivers actionable wisdom wrapped in entertaining, no-nonsense commentary. AOL finally shut down its dial-up service—but the real story? Many companies are still treating AI like it's 1999. In this episode, the team explores what it takes to move from experimentation to transformation in the age of ambient AI. Knownwell CMO Courtney Baker, CEO David DeWolf, and Chief Product & Technology Officer Mohan Rao dive into the biggest challenge facing leaders today: AI isn't just a tool—it's becoming the environment we work in. So why are so many organizations still “sneaking downstairs” to test it in isolation? Then, Pete Buer speaks with philosopher Dr. Pia Lauritzen. She explains that the real existential risk of AI is not extinction, but losing what makes us human. She argues that blindly optimizing for speed and output might cost us the deeper questions that drive true progress. All of that PLUS Pete has another edition of AI in the Wild. This week, he breaks down the latest MIT report on AI's impact on jobs: most displacement is happening in offshore and outsourced roles—for now. Plus, only a sliver of AI investments are delivering ROI, and that's mostly through efficiency, not innovation. If you're still piloting AI in a silo, this episode is your wake-up call. No, it's not sharing your live location by default, so take a rest from those social media chain letters. We're also pouring one out for AOL Dial-Up: believe it or not, 1% of US internet users were still relying on this! Plus: Trump's authoritarian move to federalize the police force in D.C., and the implications that move has for first amendment rights. We also tackle the latest CDC data showing the U.S. fertility rate has hit a historic low. What's behind the drop, and why are politicians and pronatalists freaking out? We unpack the cultural, economic, and personal reasons more people are choosing to go child-free, and the absurdity of thinking. that restricting access to healthcare and a bigger tax credit can fix it all. It's a TV-centric recommendations kinda week: ABC Summer Games (Andrew), 'Hurricane Katrina: Race Against Time' on Hulu/Disney+ (Laura), and 'Outlander: Blood of My Blood' on Starz (Pam). And in this week's installment of After Dark: Inspired by our findings in the main show that Instagram's new Maps feature is not sharing your location by default, we're asking ourselves... how much info is TOO much info to share? Location sharing may be a modern convenience, but it's also inspiring friend group drama and a ton of privacy fails. Should we be more deeply concerned about how much we're willing to share (and stalk) via location apps? And right on cue, a revelation is made on air that creates jealousy on the panel re: location sharing. Oops! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
