Email me at annehelenpetersen @ gmail OR submit a request to Patreon Support. Thank you for making the switch with us — the podcast in particular is much more at home here!I love books with complicated lore. I love plots that interrogate the way power accumulates and spoils — particularly but not exclusively on Ivy League campuses. I love it when a character learns of UNKNOWN POWERS, and I love a good heist. Which means I fell in love with Leigh Bardugo's books immediately. My favorite is Ninth House (and its sequel, Hell Bent) but she is equally well-known for the Shadow and Bone series and the duology Six of Crows, which was just re-released for its tenth anniversary... all of which pop up all over the Culture Study reading rec threads whenever we have them. So imagine my surprise when Leigh's team heard that Culture Study loved Leigh's work and would we like to have Leigh come on the show? YES, OF COURSE. And listen, I knew this conversation was gonna be great. But I didn't realize it was gonna be this great. We talk about genre, marketing, all the nerdy books she read as a teen, how to think about YA and exposure to the things that scare us, and, of course, whether there's gonna be a follow-up to Hell Bent. As always, we've worked hard to make this conversation interesting to people who aren't familiar with Leigh's work — all you have to be is interested in books, just generally — but if you're a fan, you're really gonna love it. Side Note: We're experimenting with producing our own (very imperfect) transcripts. You can find it here. If there's enough demand, we might consider putting in the not insignificant labor to make these super readable — but for now, they're a backup to the podcast, not a replacement for it. I've never resisted Love is Blind so much as run out of time for it... but then Audie Cornish said she wanted to come on the show to talk about it, and I said: I will watch any reality show, in its entirety, to talk to you about it. (Cornish was previously best known as the co-host of NPR's All Things Considered; now she is best known as the host of CNN's early morning newscast and The Assignment with Audie Cornish). I did my homework and thought I had smart things to say about Love is Blind and then Audie had way, way smarter things to say, specifically about the ways in which this current season functions as a skeleton key for the ideologies battling for dominance in our cultural moment. Even if you've never watched an episode of Love is Blind, there's a LOT here about how people perform their identities and politics and relationship needs that will snag you — and if you have watched this season (or any season), you're gonna love it even more. People are fascinated by hoarding culture — in part because it presents a reality that's not that distant from our current accumulation habits. Like, turn one screw in my brain slightly more to the left, and my dahlia collecting habit becomes something that's widely understood as a social problem. When I heard about Amanda Uhle's Destroy This House, a memoir of growing up in a hoarding household, I knew listeners would want to explore that fine line between "proper" consumption and hoarding, the stories we tell about why people hoard, and the real difficulty in navigating hoarding behaviors by people you love. Type A women (and often eldest daughters) can do anything except slow down, relax or relinquish control, am I right? Today, Louise and attachment psychotherapist Stephanie Therapy dive into the world of the Type A, eldest daughter woman: always on, always busy, always in control and subconsciously allowing these traits to filter into all areas of her life - love, lust, dating, partnership but also how we eat, spend, work, over work, recover and rest, too. The pair start by unpacking childhood patterning, mirroring, and the idea of the ‘family thermostat' before moving into how these traits follow us into adolescent and adulthood. From there, we look at how they amplify further and at what point it becomes ‘too much' or they are no longer serving us. The pair talk about what it really means to receive leadership without needing to micromanage everything (and how to incorporate this into their dating and love lives too).  The pair shift into somatics for busy brains, why traditional meditation doesn't always land for Type A women, and how subtle shifts - like micro-asks, polarity in relationships, nervous system cues, and language swaps-can create more space for support and receivership in your life. Remember: you're not broken. It's about keeping the systems that serve you and softening the ones that don't. Excited for you to enjoy this!

To be friends.”I flash on all those parental commands to “make friends.” Then say, “I just won't get it right away. But I want to enjoy… doing it.”Silence. Awkward. But intimate.I stammer. “Are you… are you, Ari?” When confused, my go-to fallback is details.“No, she's the short blond one.” She waves her right hand about shoulder high.“I know Kensington… cuz well I walked in on her anaphylactic…. Um, allergy attack. Over in the Dollar Aisle."“Yeah. She's the short one with black hair.” She gestures with her right hand, just a hair lower. “And I'm Cyndi.”We laugh. Together. She mentions the name tags again. I make reassuring noises.“That's Windy, right?”“No.” She laughs. “Cyndi… Just with the I and Y reversed.”“Oh, thank god. For a moment I misremembered again. Thought you were named after a sappy 60s song.”She laughs, easy… again. “No. Never. Not that..”We share a wink. A nod.The doors slide. I walk outside.“Cyndi. Just with the I and Y reversed."A swirl of flesh-colored fog. Framed by glasses. And twisted brown hair on her head.About… yay… tall.#AutisticAF Out Loud Newsletter is a reader-supported publication. HAPPY THURSDAY COUSINS!!!!!!!I think we've outdone ourselves with a 2 HOUR LONG EPISODE!! This week, we got a very special guest - Sara's brother Sabri! We've referenced him A LOT in past episodes and he was actually one of our very first guests in the earlier episodes (pre-video days lol). We had to bring him on for his very own episode and we shared all the funny childhood stories, some life and career advice and our usual banter. We feel like there was still so much to be covered so if you want us to run it back and bring him on for a future episode to cover more life/career advice or any other topic, let us know...he might be asking us for some form of payment though

Growing up is tough… but some siblings are pushed to take on more, and grow up faster. Ellie Lopez captures that feeling many of us know too well, in her poem, ‘Ballad of the Eldest Daughter.' Here she is reading it LIVE on the streets of San Francisco's Mission District as part of the Flor Y Canto Literary Festival back in June.

Were you the one who always held it together? The responsible one?  The one who made sure everyone else was okay—sometimes at the cost of your own well-being?  In this episode, we explore what it means to grow up as the eldest daughter—and how the roles we took on early in life may have shaped how we show up as women, physicians, caretakers, and leaders.  Whether or not you're technically the eldest daughter, if you're a woman in medicine, you may recognize yourself in this conversation.  Together, we share our personal stories, the burdens we unknowingly took on, and the healing that's possible through mindfulness, self-compassion, and intention. Pearls of Wisdom: Eldest daughter syndrome often mirrors what is expected in medicine: overresponsibility, emotional caretaking, perfectionism, and silent overwhelm. Mindful awareness helps us gently unpack the roots of these tendencies—where they began and why they persist—without blame or shame. Healing begins with recognition and continues with rest, boundaries, support, and a willingness to unlearn. You are allowed to stop carrying it all. And doing so may be the most loving act for yourself and those around you. Therapy, coaching, rest, and mindfulness are all powerful pathways to releasing what was never meant to be yours alone to hold. Reflection Questions: When did you first feel like it was your job to hold it all together? What have you mistaken for compassion that was self-abandonment? What might reclaiming your story look like now—with boundaries, rest, and gentleness? Are there areas where forgiveness—for yourself or others—might bring relief? Stay with us until the end for a grounding mindful moment—a space to breathe, feel, and explore what you've been holding... and what you might lovingly choose to lay down. If you're ready to stop carrying it all—and begin honoring your own needs with compassion—consider joining me for coaching: https://www.jessiemahoneymd.com/coaching For deeper integration and connection with others who share your lived experience, I warmly invite you to join a retreat: www.jessiemahoneymd.com/retreats If your organization or institution is seeking healing, inclusive conversations, and support around leadership, well-being, and identity, I would love to speak or lead a workshop for your group: www.jessiemahoneymd.com/speaking Dr. Ni-Cheng Liang is also available to bring her expertise and compassionate voice to your team or conference. Now it's time to ditch their new friends and turn their cloaks to Daenerys Targaryen's side of the war. The timing of the move is integral. However, before they can make their break, they catch a break that makes their task a whole lot easier. Simon and Mackelly offer them fresh brown cloaks to turn.Chapter Review:Prince Quentyn Martell and his traveling companions survived the siege of Astapor, having signed up with the sellsword company the Windblown to earn passage to Slaver's Bay. Now, under the direction of the Yunkai generals, the company is turning their sights to Meereen. Quentyn knows it's time to desert before they end up fighting against the very woman he's been sent to marry. The task is easier said than done, as they have made friends in the company. Making matters worse, rumors are spreading around the camps about the horrible atrocities Daenerys has committed, causing the prince to second-guess his marriage plans. The Tattered Prince, the leader of the Windblown, has been given instructions to keep Astapori refugees away from Yunkai, as many carry the bloody flux. They are to turn them back to Astapor or drive them toward Meereen. However, the sellsword captain has his own plans. He assembles many Westerosi-born members of the company and orders them to secretly defect to Dany's side. He figures their Westerosi roots will make a good cover story for their defection to the Targaryen queen. In this tribute to her father, delivered at the Evangelical Library in London, Lady Elizabeth Catherwood fondly recounts Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones's strong affinity to books and reading. She begins by recalling some of her memories of her father, who always had a book in his hand. She recalls a beach holiday, where all her family was playing and enjoying the sun, sand and water in beach attire, but her father was fully clothed in a suit, sitting quietly by a rock reading “The Divine Imperative”. “Everyone took reading as a part of him” she states. Lady Elizabeth then goes on to list some books and aspects of reading that Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones disliked: paperbacks, digest and encyclopedias, over-concentration on “style” in books, agonizing over words, novels, and wrong intention for reading. Next, she lists the positive aspects of Dr. Lloyd-Jones's reading such as his phenomenal memory, the amazing breadth and depth of his reading, his ability to point out dangers in books, and the variety in his reading (both basic and elaborate). She then expands on Dr. Lloyd-Jones's favorite genres to read, that being Welsh hymns (as he was "a true Welshman"), church history, biographies, and of course, the Bible. To end her tribute, she speaks on how her father had confidence in his faith on his death bed. He had fought a good fight. He had finished his race.
