There's the version of yourself you've been told to be and then there's the one who shows up when the recording keeps going because the conversation is too good to stop. This week, Thea, Audrey, and Lana couldn't stop yapping, and what unfolds is a raw examination of the work that doesn't show up in your business plans: discernment, friendship dynamics, and the discipline of knowing which race you're actually running. This conversation is what happened when we realized we weren't done processing, and hit record again. Audrey shares her journey of being labeled "too much" and why she's finally done apologizing for taking up space. Lana dissects the difference between friends who project their bench onto your Olympic aspirations. And Thea reminds us that agility (not rigid planning!) is the only framework that serves the most demanding lives. What emerges a conversation about frameworks: how to schedule your life first, how to recognize when advice is actually projection, and why the most important work you'll do in 2026 will very likely be the discernment no one sees.LISTEN IN FOR...The "too much" narrative women inherit and why reclaiming it is an act of sovereignty.Audrey's "green broke" revelation: what happens when structure collapses and you have to rebuild from authenticity instead of achievement. The Olympic team metaphor: understanding friendship dynamics when some people want to jog around the track and others are training for gold. Why verbal processing is simply how some of us think. The projection problem: how to recognize when you're giving advice to yourself instead of trying on someone else's limitations.Agility as the antidote to rigid planning and why asking "what do I really want right now?" is the most strategic question you can ask in the new year. The work that moves the needle: discernment, rest, and friendship. Why scheduling your life first is the litmus test for whether you're creating the life of your dreams or just checking boxes.Eldest daughter energy, second child chaos, and birth order baggage we're all still unpacking. The courage to protect your time and energy without apology (because it's okay to let people find their own team).TL;DR (MINUTE BY MINUTE)00:00 The episode that wasn't supposed to happen: why conversation deserves more than a hard stop.02:30 The open seat invitation: this is a group chat, not a lecture series.03:50 "Green broke" and barely broke: Audrey's sweatshirt and the second child who learned to boss herself around.04:30 When structure collapses: the bro energy that got her far, and the authenticity that got her further.07:00 "You're too much": unpacking the narrative women are handed...

What is eldest daughter syndrome? While it's not a clinical term it can be defined as an informal, non-clinical term used to describe a common pattern of emotional and behavioral experiences often reported by oldest daughters in families. It is not a medical or DSM diagnosis, but a social and psychological concept. It typically refers to the experience of taking on excessive responsibility, caregiving, or emotional labor at a young age, sometimes at the expense of one's own needs. Kayleigh is here to talk about her experience having 6 siblings and often being the caretaker to the oldest three that she grew up with. Board-certified pediatrician and certified coach Jessie Mahoney discusses her article "The burden of the eldest daughter." Jessie explores the unique psychological weight carried by firstborn women who are taught early on to hold everything together at the cost of their own well-being. She connects this childhood role to the high rates of burnout among women in health care where hyper-preparedness and self-sacrifice are rewarded until the body eventually breaks down. The conversation examines how the eldest daughter effect creates a cycle of over-responsibility that leads to resentment and even physical illness. Healing begins when we learn to release the need to be indispensable and start saying yes only when it aligns with our own needs. Partner with me on the KevinMD platform. Thank you for making the switch with us — the podcast in particular is much more at home here!I love books with complicated lore. I love plots that interrogate the way power accumulates and spoils — particularly but not exclusively on Ivy League campuses. I love it when a character learns of UNKNOWN POWERS, and I love a good heist. Which means I fell in love with Leigh Bardugo's books immediately. My favorite is Ninth House (and its sequel, Hell Bent) but she is equally well-known for the Shadow and Bone series and the duology Six of Crows, which was just re-released for its tenth anniversary... all of which pop up all over the Culture Study reading rec threads whenever we have them. So imagine my surprise when Leigh's team heard that Culture Study loved Leigh's work and would we like to have Leigh come on the show? YES, OF COURSE. And listen, I knew this conversation was gonna be great. But I didn't realize it was gonna be this great. We talk about genre, marketing, all the nerdy books she read as a teen, how to think about YA and exposure to the things that scare us, and, of course, whether there's gonna be a follow-up to Hell Bent. As always, we've worked hard to make this conversation interesting to people who aren't familiar with Leigh's work — all you have to be is interested in books, just generally — but if you're a fan, you're really gonna love it. “The Life of a Showgirl” may have given us one of Taylor's most divisive tracks ever…and it's a track 5, to boot. ‘Eldest Daughter' has a lot of things going on, but one thing we can all agree on is that Taylor is attempting to be vulnerable on this song. I've never resisted Love is Blind so much as run out of time for it... but then Audie Cornish said she wanted to come on the show to talk about it, and I said: I will watch any reality show, in its entirety, to talk to you about it. I did my homework and thought I had smart things to say about Love is Blind and then Audie had way, way smarter things to say, specifically about the ways in which this current season functions as a skeleton key for the ideologies battling for dominance in our cultural moment. People are fascinated by hoarding culture — in part because it presents a reality that's not that distant from our current accumulation habits. Like, turn one screw in my brain slightly more to the left, and my dahlia collecting habit becomes something that's widely understood as a social problem. When I heard about Amanda Uhle's Destroy This House, a memoir of growing up in a hoarding household, I knew listeners would want to explore that fine line between "proper" consumption and hoarding, the stories we tell about why people hoard, and the real difficulty in navigating hoarding behaviors by people you love. Type A women (and often eldest daughters) can do anything except slow down, relax or relinquish control, am I right? Today, Louise and attachment psychotherapist Stephanie Therapy dive into the world of the Type A, eldest daughter woman: always on, always busy, always in control and subconsciously allowing these traits to filter into all areas of her life - love, lust, dating, partnership but also how we eat, spend, work, over work, recover and rest, too. The pair start by unpacking childhood patterning, mirroring, and the idea of the ‘family thermostat' before moving into how these traits follow us into adolescent and adulthood. From there, we look at how they amplify further and at what point it becomes ‘too much' or they are no longer serving us. The pair talk about what it really means to receive leadership without needing to micromanage everything (and how to incorporate this into their dating and love lives too).  The pair shift into somatics for busy brains, why traditional meditation doesn't always land for Type A women, and how subtle shifts - like micro-asks, polarity in relationships, nervous system cues, and language swaps-can create more space for support and receivership in your life. Remember: you're not broken. It's about keeping the systems that serve you and softening the ones that don't. Excited for you to enjoy this!

Were you the one who always held it together? The responsible one?  The one who made sure everyone else was okay—sometimes at the cost of your own well-being?  In this episode, we explore what it means to grow up as the eldest daughter—and how the roles we took on early in life may have shaped how we show up as women, physicians, caretakers, and leaders.  Whether or not you're technically the eldest daughter, if you're a woman in medicine, you may recognize yourself in this conversation.  Together, we share our personal stories, the burdens we unknowingly took on, and the healing that's possible through mindfulness, self-compassion, and intention. Pearls of Wisdom: Eldest daughter syndrome often mirrors what is expected in medicine: overresponsibility, emotional caretaking, perfectionism, and silent overwhelm. Mindful awareness helps us gently unpack the roots of these tendencies—where they began and why they persist—without blame or shame. Healing begins with recognition and continues with rest, boundaries, support, and a willingness to unlearn. You are allowed to stop carrying it all. And doing so may be the most loving act for yourself and those around you. Therapy, coaching, rest, and mindfulness are all powerful pathways to releasing what was never meant to be yours alone to hold. Reflection Questions: When did you first feel like it was your job to hold it all together? What have you mistaken for compassion that was self-abandonment?
