Top economic officials from the U.S. and China met in Geneva, Switzerland over the weekend. This was the first time that they've had face-to-face since the start of their enormous trade war.The U.S. has currently placed 145 per cent tariffs on China. China has responded with 125 per cent. These levies have essentially stopped business between the world's two largest economies.Daniel Desrochers is Politico's international trade reporter. He's here for a catch-up on the latest developments of the global trade war.For transcripts of Front Burner, please visit: https://www.cbc.ca/radio/frontburner/transcripts
United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer will be in the hot seat today as he testifies in front of the Senate Finance Committee, where he's expected to defend President Donald Trump's global tariff hike. Trump has sent mixed messages about whether his new tariffs are permanent or up for negotiation, although there are some signs that Trump is entertaining offers. Meanwhile, tensions with China are flaring. Trump told Beijing to withdraw its reciprocal tariffs by today, or else he'll hike tariffs on China by another 50 percent. POLITICO trade reporter Daniel Desrochers breaks it all down with host Steven Overly. Plus, the House is slow-marching toward its vote on a budget blueprint, which could happen as soon as tomorrow.

For the final installment of our SHE-lection! series, we're headed to Kansas's Third Congressional district where Democratic Representative Sharice Davids is running for her third term against former Kansas Republican Party chair Amanda Adkins, who also challenged Davids for the seat in 2020. Davids is one of the first Native American women and one of the first openly LGBTQ persons elected to the House. In the run-up to Election Day, Adkins and Davids have been squaring off on the economy, reproductive rights and public safety. A new Sienna College/New York Times poll showed Davids with a 14 point edge over Adkins, but recent redistricting has given the Third district a potentially more conservative constituency than previous years. We speak with Washington correspondent for The Kansas City Star, Daniel Desrochers, and Emily Hedges Vietti, a gender and politics researcher at the Institute for Leadership Studies at the University of Kansas and the director of Ready to Run Kansas.

It was summer vacation, and a group of boys was playing in front of the Saint-Nom-de-Jésus school in Montreal's east-end neighbourhood of Hochelaga-Maisonneuve. At 12:40 p.m. on Aug. 9, 1995, a man got into his Jeep parked across the tree-lined street from the school. A powerful explosion sent the Jeep flying into the air. The blast was so violent it shattered nearby windows. Pieces of metal flew everywhere. One of the pieces of metal struck one of the boys playing on the street, 11-year-old Daniel Desrochers. Desrochers, who was supposed to start Grade 6 in a few days, was hit in the head and died four days later in a hospital. The bombing was tied to the biker war that had rocked Montreal for the previous year. Police said Desrochers was the first innocent victim of that war. The Hells Angels, under the leadership of Maurice (Mom) Boucher, had taken on a group of criminal gangs called the Alliance. Boucher wanted total control of drug-trafficking turfs in Montreal.
