Every church should be a safe space for everyone who comes in. Every church should also be equipping people to confront the powers of darkness and help those in trouble. Unfortunately, far too many churches are unsafe internally, which leaves them unprepared to confront external dangers. An unsafe church creates a toxic environment that works against the gospel. A safe church is battle-ready to combat the worst of the world's problems. Make My Church Safe by respected pastor, Sam Rainer, is designed to be a brief and general overview of the best practices regarding church safety for a broad audience. Sam Rainer serves as president of Church Answers. He is the co-founder of Rainer Publishing, and he also serves as lead pastor at West Bradenton Baptist Church in Southwest Florida. Sam has written hundreds of articles for several publications. He is a frequent conference speaker on church health issues. Welcome to the Arete Coach Podcast, hosted by Severin Sorensen. With an episode titled "Will Over Skill: Building High-Performance Teams Through Purpose-Driven Leadership." In this episode, recorded via Zoom on November 13, 2024, we are joined by Pete Sciabarra, an executive coach, Vistage Chair, and former Vistage corporate executive. Pete brings a unique blend of military, corporate, and coaching experience to the conversation. As a former U.S. Navy captain and helicopter pilot, he transitioned into executive leadership, ultimately holding senior roles at Vistage, where he oversaw a $25 million segment of the business that achieved the company's number one ranking. Pete Sciabarra's journey is marked by dedication to service and leadership excellence. From his early days at the Naval Academy to his role as a helicopter pilot during Desert Storm, Pete's military career shaped his leadership philosophy. His path took an unexpected turn when his son was diagnosed with autism, leading him to pursue a Ph.D. in Leadership Studies from the University of San Diego, focusing his research on adults with autism. This personal challenge transformed his understanding of human potential and care. As a Vistage Chair in San Diego, Pete facilitates executive peer groups that help CEOs and business owners break through barriers, fostering collaboration and personal accountability. His expertise in crisis leadership proved invaluable during emergency relief efforts for businesses affected by major hurricanes. Beyond his professional life, Pete's commitment to service extends to coaching high school varsity inline hockey, bringing the same focus on teamwork and resilience from the boardroom to the rink. Pete's experience with Vistage demonstrates the transformative power of peer advisory groups. He emphasizes that successful peer groups aren't just about business advice—they're about creating a safe space where leaders can share challenges they might not discuss elsewhere. The key to successful peer groups lies in selecting members who are lifelong learners and who understand they don't have all the answers, creating an environment where vulnerability and growth can flourish. The Evolution of Leadership in the AI Era as artificial intelligence reshapes business landscapes, We explore frameworks and AI like Wiki, SWOT, Porters Five Forces, and Blue Ocean Strategy. Pete highlights that while AI tools can enhance decision-making and analysis, they won't replace the need for authentic leadership and human connection. He emphasizes that successful leaders must adapt to new technologies while maintaining focus on people-centric leadership, caring deeply about their team members' needs and development. The Importance of Continuous Learning and Adaptation Throughout the episode, Pete's journey from military service to executive coaching underscores the importance of continuous learning and adaptation. His experience shows that effective leaders must remain curious, humble, and open to new perspectives. Whether it's embracing new technologies like AI or understanding different leadership challenges, success comes from maintaining a learning mindset and being willing to question established assumptions while staying true to core values of integrity and service. Lisa DeFrank-Cole, Gen X, joins Yo who talks with us about resiliency and other important traits for women leaders. Lisa is Director and F Duke Perry Endowed Professor of Leadership Studies at West Virginia University, and is widely known for her academic and practical expertise in women's leadership. She is a leadership coach and has been coauthor/coeditor of the following three academic books about women and leadership including an award-winning textbook:. Women and Leadership: Journey Toward Equity A Research Agenda for Gender and Leadership Women's Leadership Journeys: Stories, Research, and Novel Perspectives Lisa overcame many stereotypes as a first-generation college graduate from Appalachia to reach where she is today. WV Living magazine named her a “Wonder Woman” in 2019, celebrating her for defying barriers and working towards uplifting West Virginia. Topics Covered: Why resiliency is an important leadership trait What other skills/traits women offer What are gender norms & alignment Likeability vs competence Masculine and feminine traits What are different strategies to promote equity What is a leader identity (claiming vs granting) 3 Episode Takeaways 1. Hardiness is needed for women to be leaders. Resilience is the ability to get back up after being knocked down and trying again. Women face challenges that are different than men when it comes to leadership. 2. There's a flexibility and empathy women bring to leadership situations. Because we are scanners women can assess where people are coming from. Research states women bring a transformational approach into organizations. Women can be the “glue” that holds things together which can be unrewarded and overlooked. 3. Gender norms are changing but not equable yet. It is going in both directions for men and women. Leaders are seen in their ability to make decisions or be agents of change, and how society perceives these differently for men and women is the real challenge. Show SummaryOn today's episode, we're featuring a conversation with Marine Corps Veteran Dr. Derek Abbey, President and CEO of Project Recover, the nation's leading citizen-led non-profit organization to search, locate, document, recover, and repatriate the over 81,500 American service members missing in action. Provide FeedbackAs a dedicated member of the audience, we would like to hear from you about the show. Please take a few minutes to share your thoughts about the show in this short feedback survey. By doing so, you will be entered to receive a signed copy of one of our host's three books on military and veteran mental health. About Today's GuestDerek Abbey, Ph.D. is Project Recover's President and CEO. He served for 23 years in the United States Marine Corps. His academic research and his post-military career have focused on connecting veterans with college opportunities, He began as Project Recover team member in 2004 and spent five years on the Board of Directors before being appointed as President / CEO.Derek Abbey grew up in Seattle. He was the only child of a single mom doing the best she could to raise a “rambunctious boy.” Her unexpected death when Derek was 13 turned his life upside-down. For four years, he lived primarily with his aunt and uncle. Finally, at 17, Derek ran away to the Marine Corps. Derek Abbey had been without a rudder and sail for most of his life. In the USMC, he found a structure and system he could succeed in.First, he enlisted in the Marine Corps as a communicator. After his initial enlistment, the Marine Corps selected him for a commissioning program and sent him to Oregon State University to earn a degree. Upon receiving his degree he was commissioned as a ground officer. Finally, Derek was selected for an aviation contract while completing the six months long Basic School. This combination of events, going into the military and then to college, set the stage for Derek's academic and professional accomplishments. It also is the seed that gave rise to a passion for connecting veterans with educational opportunities. It is also, of course, the precursor which led up to his current role with Project Recover.Derek Abbey attended flight school in Pensacola FL and graduated as a Naval Flight Officer. He was then sent to the F/A-18 Hornet Fleet Replacement Squadron at MCAS Miramar where he earned his designation as an F/A-18 Weapons Systems Officer. He was then immediately assigned to his first squadron, VMFA(AW)-121, and deployed for Operation Southern Watch and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Over the next few years, he deployed two more times to Iraq and once to the Far East. He holds more combat hours in the Hornet than hours in peaceful skies. After an extended and successful tour in the Hornet, Derek left flight operations to become a Plank Owner (original member) at Marine Corps Special Operations Command as the Air Officer for the 1st Marine Special Operations Battalion, now 1st Raider Battalion. During this period with the Marine Raiders, he served in Marine Special Operations Company Delta and was deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom as their Forward Air Controller, Special Operations JTAC, and Executive Officer. In 2009, Derek was selected by the Marine Corps for the Advanced Degree Program and assigned to the University of San Diego. “In 2009-2011, there was a huge influx of military into higher education. Universities were figuring out how to work with these populations.” While earning a Masters in Higher Education Leadership, Derek conducted research on how universities and colleges work with military-connected students on their campuses. His thesis provided best practices for colleges to use in creating successful military programs on their campuses. In his twilight tour from 2011-2014, Derek served as the Director of the Marine Corps' Train the Trainer School in Camp Lejeune, NC. His organization was responsible for the training and education of instructors, curriculum developers, staff and leadership of 93 training units across the Marine Corps. Derek retired from the USMC as a Major in 2014. Shortly thereafter, he began his doctorate in Leadership Studies at the University of San Diego. Derek focused again on conducting practical research that would help make higher education more accessible to veterans, the majority of whom would be first-generation college students. His research has garnered national attention and resulted in multiple speaking engagements. Derek earned his Ph.D. in 2019.Upon retiring from the Marine Corps, Derek began working at San Diego State University as a Military Liaison Officer in the Joan and Art Barron Veterans Center. In this position, he focused on outreach to the military-connected students in the region in order to provide guidance for them attaining their higher education goals. In 2015, he took over the Military and Veterans Program at The University of San Diego. During his time with USD, he created and implemented programming that resulted in the growth of the military-connected population by 30% and the program being recognized as one at the top in the nation. Derek was the advocate for this population not only at USD but on other campuses in the region through the Military Ally program and with organizations across the nation attempting to provide better educational guidance for the military population. In 2017, Derek took over West Coast Operations for the Travis Manion Foundation (TMF) as the Senior Director of the West and Northwest Regions. TMF is a veterans service organization that works to unite the American community through programming that emphasizes the value of strong character. In this role, he oversaw the strategy development, program implementation and expansion, budget execution, and evaluation in TMF's largest geographical region. When I interview junior military officers (JMOs) to determine their fit with the Cameron-Brooks program, I ask them to describe their leadership style. They often label their style as “I am a servant leader.” When I help the officers in our program prepare answers to the question, “What is your leadership style, or similarly, how do you build a team?” I hear much of the same, such as, “I use a servant leadership style approach.” When I hear JMOs describe what they mean, I wonder if they genuinely understand servant leadership. To help gain clarification, I interviewed Dr. Michael Carey, a professor at Gonzaga University School of Leadership Studies who was the first director of the Organizational Leadership program in 1987 to be a guest on the show. Dr. Carey is the coordinator for the Master in Servant Leadership program and teaches several classes. Gonzaga University is recognized as one of the leading institutions in Servant Leadership. I am currently a graduate student in the Gonzaga Master's of Organizational Leadership and have taken two classes in the Servant Leadership concentration, one of them with Dr. Carey and another with Larry Spears, the founder of the Spears Center for Servant-Leadership and former longtime President and CEO (1990-2007) of The Robert K. Greenleaf Center for Servant-Leadership. My conversation with Dr. Carey aims to easily define and explain Servant Leadership and how we can all be Servant Leaders at work, at home, and in other organizations. In addition to Servant Leadership, we also cover Transformational Leadership, which is related. The conversation is not academic at all and is highly applicable to military officers still serving, those preparing for the transition, and the Cameron-Brooks Alumni listeners as well. Listen and learn more about servant leadership and the JMO. To learn more about Servant Leadership, Dr. Carey recommended the topics listed below. Robert Greenleaf is considered the founder of the Servant Leadership concept. He wrote the essay “The Servant as Leader” in 1970. The institute he started on Servant Leadership is now based at Seton Hall University. You can find numerous resources and articles on Servant Leadership at the Robert K. Greenleaf Center for Servant Leadership at https://www.greenleaf.org/. He also referenced the Spears Center for Servant-Leadership, which I had described previously. Both of these websites have blogs and book recommendations. Here is my favorite Robert Greenleaf quote that I try to follow each day, “The servant-leader is servant first, it begins with a natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first, as opposed to, wanting power, influence, fame, or wealth.” Thank you for listening to the Cameron-Brooks podcast! As you consider your potential transition from the military to the business world, if you'd like to discuss your marketability or how Cameron-Brooks can guide you to launch your career, please contact us directly. Schedule a call here. Cameron-Brooks has a 50-year track record of guiding military officers to create a step-by-step plan to learn about their options, connect their military experiences directly to opportunities in corporate America, craft a resume that will stand out to hiring managers, and ultimately launch a successful business career.

In the last few years, bilingual social media content has emerged as a tool used to increase diversity and rights for minority groups. On Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, and other social platforms, organizations such as Tide Pods by Unilever have released bilingual images that support diverse communities. More recently, nonprofits have started to use bilingual social media content as a marketing tool and support communities by creating awareness and encouraging the involvement of people to take positive action.
