It's summertime, which means endless beach trips and redbush tea sipping! As we wave goodbye to school and welcome in summer, it's important to recollect the plentiful adaptations and changes that students and teachers endured this year. Today, we'll talk about how our education system slowly transitioned back to in-person school and the effects on students and administrators. Once again, I'm delighted to feature a very special guest, my school principal Mrs. Jennifer Leighton, who spills the tea on transitioning back to in-person school, creating a safe learning environment, restarting activities and events, and planning for the upcoming school year.
Dr. Carol Birks' start at Chester Upland School District didn't go quite as planned. Like most entering superintendents, Birks had planned to spend her first months at the Pennsylvania district meeting and listening to her community. However, the COVID-19 pandemic changed all of that. Instead of hitting the ground running in July 2020, Birks was forced to alter her entrance strategy. Instead of the standard transition, she found ways to meet people who couldn't be physically present and navigate school reopening in an area with extremely high transmission rates. In this episode, Birks shares how she made connections in spite of COVID-19, and how Chester Upland is now returning to the classroom.Dr. Carol Birks (@drcarolbirks)Chester Upland School District (@ChesterUplandSD)Subscribe to SchoolCEO at SchoolCEO.com for more advice, stories, and strategies for leading your schools. Vice President Kamala Harris' laugh at border crisis & school reopening Qs + President Joe Biden's stumbles up Air Force One become latest run of bad optics for the new White House administration amid mounting pressure on many fronts. VP Harris was on a publicity tour for public health (including vaccine safety ) when pressed about the ongoing crisis at the US/Mexico border broke into what seemed to be a nervous laugh. This same laugh (some would say a cackle) emerged again this week at an event regarding the children of America returning to in person learning across the country amid revelations in San Diego County, California of migrant children just entering the country in 2021 being taught in person at the San Diego Convention Center before school-age American citizens. President Biden has been the subject of concern too after two recent stumbles up Air Force One; one that was a series of three stumbles leading to him falling on his knees, the other just days ago in the rain while carrying an umbrella in one hand and what appeared to be a luggage bag in the other but not resulting in the same severity of fall as the previous incident.

School districts around the state are deciding whether to return to in-person instruction after Gov. Kate Brown loosened pandemic-related restrictions. Many parents who are advocating for schools to reopen say that the longer distance learning continues, the more likely that the achievement gap widens between students of color and white students. But Rashelle Chase, an early childhood educator and Portland mother, says that the voices of families of color are not being included in those conversations. She wrote a piece recently criticizing white parents for making these arguments in bad faith and for speaking on behalf of families of color. Chase joins us.
A group of 19 elected leaders from across the political spectrum in Deschutes County wrote a letter to Governor Brown last week. The letter asked the governor to allow K-5 elementary schools to reopen in January. The Oregon Department of Education temporarily relaxed COVID-19 standards for schools, making it easier for some schools to return to in-person learning. ODE started the school year using two measures — test positivity rate and number of cases — to determine whether counties could reopen schools for in-person learning. When wildfires burned through Oregon, medical facilities were unable to process as many COVID-19 tests, which skewed test positivity rates for counties across the state. As a result, ODE decided to temporarily stop using test positivity rates as a measure for reopening. ODE director Colt Gill says it essentially allows schools to reopen that were already on track to do so before the wildfires. We hear from Gill.
