Åsikter som uttrycks är skribentens egna.Som liten var jag inte så förtjust i Astrid Lindgrens böcker om Lotta på Bråkmakargatan. Kanske för att hon påminde lite för mycket om mig själv. Liksom hon var jag infallsrik, impulsiv och mycket bestämd. Det var inte alltid egenskaper som uppskattades av omgivningen. Men idag känner jag en stor ömhet när jag tänker på den kavata Lotta – självständig och ”envis som en gammal get”. Ett kapitel jag tycker särskilt mycket om är det där hon flyttar hemifrån.Lotta vaknar på fel sida en morgon och hennes mamma har dessutom lagt fram en tröja som ”killar och sticks” åt henne. Hon vägrar envist att ta den på sig eftersom hon hellre vill ha sin finklänning. Mamma säger nej och det blir ingen frukost förrän Lotta klätt på sig tröjan. Det har inte avsedd effekt. I stället för att falla till föga tar Lotta fram en sax och klipper sönder det förhatliga plagget. Men en så trotsig handling är ändå i grövsta laget, det inser hon, och så rymmer hon hemifrån.Den första hierarkiska struktur vi får lära känna är familjen. När en förälder begär att ett barn ska bete sig på ett visst sätt så gör den i själva verket två saker: lär barnet hur man bör uppföra sig och tränar det i att rätta sig efter förälderns krav. Uppmaningen ”ta på dig den där tröjan” innehåller också förhållningsordern ”och lyd mig”. Det fungerar inte på Lotta för hon är inte av den sort som anpassar sig. Vid ett annat tillfälle, när hon behöver ta medicin, så vägrar hon också det. Storebrodern Jonas förklarar förnumstigt att när han måste ta medicin så bestämmer han sig bara för att ta den och så gör han det. Lotta svarar att när hon måste ta medicin så bestämmer hon sig för att inte göra det, och så gör hon det inte.Ungar som är så obstinata som Lotta är undantag, även om många går igenom en kortare trotsperiod. Människobarn är synnerligen hjälplösa och att anpassa sig till den som vårdar en är den säkraste vägen till överlevnad. Det gör oss generellt extremt ”uppfostringsbara” – och sårbara även för indoktrinering och ren lydnadsfostran. Vilket gör att vi behöver fundera över om vi vill att barn ska göra rätt för att de förstår vad som är rätt eller för att de är rädda för straff, eller längtar efter gemenskap och belöningar.Länge sågs lydnad i sig som ett viktigt mål för uppfostran. I en barnuppfostringsbok som fick spridning under slutet av 1800-talet kan man läsa att ”Minsta motstånd som göres med vett och vilja, skall straffas allvarsamt; det är myndighets store hemlighet”. Boken ingick i en våg av skrifter om hur man bäst tuktar barn. Det var rentav fel att ägna sig åt övertalning för om barnet hade övertalats hade det ju faktiskt gjort som det själv ville. Det hade antagit föräldrarnas sätt att se på saken, men det hade inte böjt sig. Och det skulle barn lära sig. I flera böcker från denna tid beskrevs barn som potentiellt onda och i stort sett alla medel var tillåtna för att göra dem lydiga.Psykoanalytikern Alice Miller gjorde på 1980-talet i sin bok I begynnelsen var uppfostran en exposé över vad hon kallar den svarta pedagogiken. Den hade genomsyrat barnuppfostran i många århundraden och gick i korthet ut på att så tidigt som möjligt knäcka barns vilja. Alice Miller ansåg att denna svarta pedagogik hade fått, och fortsatte att få, allvarliga samhällskonsekvenser eftersom den gör vuxna människor oförmögna att skilja andras vilja från deras egen. Det brutala nedbrytandet av våra sanna jag börjar ofta så tidigt att vi inte klarar att ens senare i livet förstå vad som gjorts mot oss. Vår reflex när någon pekar med hela handen blir därför att underkasta oss utan att ifrågasätta.Barn som lyder lär sig att förlägga orsaken till sitt eget handlade utanför sig själva, och det gäller för både positiva och negativa handlingar. De gör gott om andra säger åt dem, gör ont av samma orsak och förhåller sig passiva om det saknas förhållningsorder, enligt Alice Miller. Hon använder ett så starkt uttryck för vad den svarta pedagogiken gör med barn som ”psykiskt mord”.Miller studerade ett antal av ledarna för Hitlers tredje rike och konstaterade att de alla hade fått en sträng och strikt uppfostran. När en auktoritär person som Hitler befallde, på ungefär samma sätt som deras egna föräldrar gjort under deras barndom, var det lätt för dem att falla in i rollen som lydigt barn.Om olydnad inte existerar som ett möjligt alternativ i ens tankevärld är motståndskraften mot illegitima order från myndigheter eller ledare utraderad.Lotta på Bråkmakargatan tar konsekvenserna av sitt hårdnackade motstånd mot både sticksiga tröjor och stränga förhållningsorder och installerar sig på grannen tant Bergs uthusvind. Där blir flykten från hemmet en rolig lek ända till kvällen. Men så kommer mörkret. Livet i det egna hushållet känns plötsligt både ensamt och skrämmande, trots sällskap av gosedjuret Bamsen. Ändå blir Lotta envist kvar. Hon klarar inte annat.Men Lotta har tur. Hennes föräldrar har inte anammat den svarta pedagogikens idéer om att bryta ner all opposition hos sitt barn. De förstår att dottern behöver hjälp att ta sig tillbaka in i familjegemenskapen utan att ge avkall på sin värdighet och integritet. Med stor kärlek hämtar de hem den nu gråtande Lotta. Något skäll för den förstörda tröjan hörs inte och Lottas mamma hjälper henne försiktigt att be om förlåtelse på ett sätt som fungerar för henne. Relationen är viktigare än ett klädesplagg.Lottas föräldrars sätt att hantera situationen påminner mig om de metoder som den danske familjeterapeuten Jesper Juul förespråkade, och går ut på att visa respekt för barnets integritet och ha ett demokratiskt förhållningssätt. Hans böcker blev populära bland föräldrar kring millennieskiftet, fyra decennier efter böckerna om Lotta. Men den svarta pedagogiken är tyvärr inte död ännu. Tvärtom, den blomstrar. Den som föreslår ökad hårdhet mot barn som lösning på allt från dåliga skolresultat och egensinne till kriminalitet får röster och likes.Det vi ständigt tycks glömma är att detta att inte kunna böja sig är både en styrka och en svaghet. De oböjliga barnen behöver ofta hjälp att ta sig ut ur hörn de målar in sig i, eller ännu hellre – stöd att inte ens hamna där. Förhoppningsvis inser Lottas mamma att hon nästa gång kan erbjuda fler alternativ än underkastelse eller totalt uppror. Finklänningen kanske inte är ett lämpligt val en vardag men högst sannolikt finns det andra kläder i garderoben.Men den som gör motstånd kan också behöva uppmuntran i sin förmåga att tänka och handla självständigt för det kommer ofta med ett pris – till exempel andras ilska. Som föräldrar kan vi låta våra barn få träna sig på att göra motstånd på ett klokt sätt genom att visa dem hur protester kan bli konstruktiva och hur förhandlingar kan leda till förändringar. Vi kan uppmuntra att barn framför åsikter, men tipsa om bra sätt att prata med varandra. Nothing makes me happier than a conversation that goes deep unexpectedly... and Cameron Ungar delivered! Trash and Stash is a cleanout and downsizing service based in North Carolina. He talks about being thrifty - not like cheap, but about putting value on the effort made. He talks about simplifying our lives and homes being an act of rebellion (love that word!), and says that small, consistent actions have big results.Cameron offers an efficiency bonus for his employees, because just filling a dumpster is not preferred; he prefers repurposing or reusing, to keep things in circulation. “There has not been a bigger government scandal during my lifetime,” says Senator Ron Johnson, “and yet even now that we have documented proof of corruption, most of the legacy media refuses to report on it.” In the release of his new Senate report, Sen. Johnson says he found evidence that federal health officials knew about COVID-19 vaccine safety signals in 2021 but “purposely” hid them. Sen. "I'm not suggesting that repression has lost its place as a fundamental defense mechanism. Repression remains central, coherent, and fundamental to the founding of the unconscious. It is what makes certain contents inaccessible to consciousness, and what we access as psychoanalysts through dreams, play, symptoms, and associations. That remains true. What I was observing, and I'm still observing more now, is something different. When I see children and adolescents that are more capable to work on a task while doing homework, and at the same time listening to music, and at the same time texting with somebody - I don't think that they are real. This is my point. I don't think they are real. This multitasking way of living is part of life today… The clinical question for us becomes this - when does this multiplicity become a symptom? When does it interfere with the capacity for depth, for intimacy, for a sustained emotional contact?  I think that this is what we need to see, to study and to differentiate in our consulting room."    Episode Description: We consider how changes in our culture may impact the individual's intrapsychic space and from that the nature of the psychoanalytic encounter. Virginia comments on the diminishing of the paternal symbolizing function and with that a change in the 'rites of passage' that adolescents traverse - now the rituals are "created by the young people themselves" as contrasted with those passed down by their elders. This, she feels, has resulted in "intimacy becoming spectacle" and for many, the analytic session is where "the construction of intimacy may begin."  She shares clinical material with us from 40 years ago and contrasts the nature of her interventions with her contemporary treatments. Now, "I appreciate the mystery in the process and that we create meaning with the patient." This episode features Mark Ungar, a professor of criminal justice and political science at Brooklyn College and the City University of New York. Ungar has written extensively on the rule of law, policing, and human rights in Latin America, and more recently has focused his research on environmental organized crime across the Amazon basin. Ungar notes that environmental organized crime—illegal gold mining, logging, cattle ranching, and land grabbing—has become the third largest criminal enterprise globally and is now deeply intertwined with narcotrafficking operations. Rather than existing as separate phenomena, these activities share infrastructure, routes, and personnel. Criminal networks carrying out environmental organized crime are deeply intertwined with state actors and the legal economy. The nexus involves governors, military officials, environmental ministry personnel, and municipal authorities at multiple levels. Even when good laws exist, implementation remains weak because investigations rarely lead to prosecutions of major figures. The episode turns to Venezuela's Orinoco Mining Arc, a zone covering roughly 12 percent of national territory that then-president Nicolás Maduro established in 2016. Ungar describes it as a "criminal state project" in which the Maduro government effectively legalized destructive extraction in a geologically unique and biodiverse area that includes nature reserves and indigenous territories. The zone is controlled by a confluence of Venezuelan military officials, Colombian armed groups including the ELN and FARC dissidents, Brazilian garimpeiros, and local criminal organizations called sindicatos and pranes. Violence is extreme, and environmental and health consequences are devastating, with ninety percent of pregnant women and schoolchildren showing elevated mercury levels in their blood. Ungar explains how the gold and minerals extracted from this area enter legitimate international markets. Between 2016 and 2021, the Mining Arc generated approximately $2.2 billion in gold revenue, but an estimated 86 percent was mined illegally, and roughly 70 percent was smuggled through shell companies and opaque supply chains. The zone also contains big deposits of coltan, iron, bauxite, and other sought-after minerals. Ungar shares concern about the Trump administration's current approach to Venezuela. While the administration has focused on oil access, counternarcotics, migration, and excluding Chinese influence, there appears to be no priority given to addressing environmental organized crime. Ungar suggests that Washington's willingness to work with the current Venezuelan government—the Maduro regime minus Maduro himself—likely means business as usual for state-sponsored extraction intertwined with organized crime. Consumer countries must stop looking the other way about the origins of products that end up in legitimate commerce.

Greg went on to study philosophy and theatre arts at UC Berkeley, and later earned advanced degrees across a wide range of disciplines, including sociology, criminal justice, acting, and theatre and drama.
