We've been hearing a lot about anti trans rallies happening around the country this week. A British Women's Rights activist has been holding speaking engagements outside Parliament Houses, attracting groups aligned with the material she's sharing. In Melbourne, Neo-Nazi's showed up and shared the space with a local Liberal MP. So who is this activist? Are her words about spreading hate? Or does she really want to make spaces safer for women? In this episode of The Quicky we speak to trans non-binary activist and Deni Todorovič about how they feel being at the centre of an anti trans storm. Subscribe to Mamamia GET IN TOUCH Feedback? Deni Todorovič is a queer and human rights activist, an LGBTQIA+ educator, a podcast host and a celebrity fashion stylist. In Part one of this chat, Jess and Deni discuss what it means to be non-binary and how we can have better conversations around the spectrum of identity. Deni reveals their path to identifying as gender nonconforming, and why it's important we continue asking questions to learn. Growing up Deni endured relentless bullying for their ethnicity and sexuality, and shares how they've built resilience through a sense of spiritual protection and the support of both their biological and chosen family. Coming up in Part two, we check in with Deni over the recent backlash they faced when they partnered with Swimwear brand Seafolly for World Pride. Since recording Part 1 of their chat with Jess, Deni has been caught up in a public backlash after partnering with Seafolly for a campaign during World Pride. Activist and author Deni Todorovič was turned down by four cabs because they were wearing heels and a mini skirt. That didn't happen overseas – it happened right here in Australia, in 2023. On today's episode of Under The Gloss, Deni joins Phoebe to chat about how they always felt innately different, why we've been conditioned to fear the queer community, the power of visibility and why being trans is so much more than a pronoun. 'Love This For You' is the debut book from beloved friend of the podcast Deni Todorović. Deni was the first ever guest on Come Out Wherever You Are. They shared their story of coming out twice: first as gay and then as non-binary. And now it's our turn to return the favour by telling you, our lovely listeners, about their book. 'Love This For You' is a powerful combination of self-development guide and memoir with practical activities to help you better understand yourself and rewrite your own rules. Deni opens up to Sean about the time their parents spotted them wearing a dress as a kid, how they've become more comfortable wearing a dress than jeans, hiding their queerness behind masks and body image pressures that persist regardless of gender. You know one of the main facets of the Seize the Yay philosophy is separating what you do from who you are but, naturally, our conversations still touch on “the doing” because work is inextricably related with finding your overall purpose or passion in life. Today's guest, however, has faced perhaps more upheaval in relation to “the being “– not so much in finding what you love but in finding who you are.Growing up as a Jehovah's Witness to hard-working, immigrant parents in regional Victoria, Deni Todorovič's environment didn't exactly foster the language or conversations that allowed them to fully articulate their identity until almost their 20s. But having come out not once, but TWICE since then (along with all the torment and confusion that accompanies such big shifts in identity), Deni is now living their absolute best life as a non-binary role model encouraging us all to honour who we are as well as gently and patiently helping us all learn more about the language and landscape of gender identity and sexuality. For someone who once didn't feel like they had the language to express how they felt, Deni is one of the most articulate guests I've had the pleasure of speaking with sharing so openly about even the most awkward elements of gender fluidity i.e. we learn how they pick which bathrooms to use. Sexuality aside, Deni has also had an incredible pathYAY working their way from shit kicking intern all the way up to Fashion Editor at Cosmopolitan right up until its closure in 2018.Their insights are equally as powerful in dealing with the unexpected loss of dreams embracing a giant pivot to move back to Geelong and embrace the freelance world wholeheartedly (including becoming the face of The Body Shop's Self Love Campaign - a company you know I adore working with). Their energy and passion for equality and kindness is so infectious and energising (and the gold sparkles I turned up in barely did Deni justice) – I hope that they bring your heart the warmth that mine was filled with the whole way through.+ Follow Deni here+ Announcements on Insta at @spoonful_of_sarah+ Join our Facebook community here+ Subscribe to not miss out on the next instalment of YAY!FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE BODY SHOP YOUTH ACTIVIST SERIES

Sexuality aside, Deni has also had an incredible pathYAY working their way from shit kicking intern all the way up to Fashion Editor at Cosmopolitan right up until its closure in 2018. Their insights are equally as powerful in dealing with the unexpected loss of dreams embracing a giant pivot to move back to Geelong and embrace the freelance world wholeheartedly (including becoming the face of The Body Shop's Self Love Campaign - a company you know I adore working with). Their energy and passion for equality and kindness is so infectious and energising (and the gold sparkles I turned up in barely did Deni justice) – I hope that they bring your heart the warmth that mine was filled with the whole way through. + Follow Deni here + Announcements on Insta at @spoonful_of_sarah + Join our Facebook community here + Subscribe to not miss out on the next instalment of YAY! They're magical. Engaging. Endearing and one of a kind. They're many things. A celebrity stylist, fashion editor, content creator but perhaps most importantly a vocal activist for Queer and Human Rights. You would've seen them everywhere right now, and rightly so. They speak openly, frankly and with courage about sexuality, gender, equality and beyond constantly on their platforms with a view to effect change. Their pronouns are they/them, and having just celebrated their year anniversary, they identify as Non-Binary and Queer. Knowing They were gay when they were 4 years old and growing up in a strict Jehovah's Witness home to a Serbian family was difficult. That's an understatement. We talk about how they came out as gay to their parents when they were 19 and again last year as Non-Binary and how this time it was even harder. It's like the chat you have with your bestie over a wine, no holds barred and as if no-one is listening. We don't hold back as we talk incredibly honestly about about our struggles, sex, politics, race, equality, pop culture and we talk as friends. Because that's what we are and that's how you feel around Deni Todorović. Accepted. Embraced. Loved. It's SOUL FOOD.*Apologies in advance for the squealing, I do that a lot with them.
This is an episode about pronouns but it's not really. It's actually about love and shame and freedom and acceptance and painful struggles and life-changing revelations. Deni Todorović grew up in regional Victoria and from a young age, Deni knew they were gay. But coming out to their Jehovah's Witness parents in the family home? Well….it wasn't easy. Nor was coming out to their parents 10 years later as non-binary, but, they did it. And their story is why we're here today. Deni is a stylist, a writer, an activist, and the former Fashion Editor of Cosmopolitan Magazine. And they join Mia today, to share their story... How would a religious parent respond to their child coming out as gay? And then coming out again as non-binary later in life? Deni Todorovič is an activist and a content creator who comes out as queer and non-binary most days. Deni has known they were gay since early childhood when they would kiss a poster of ‘90210' star Brian Austin Green alone in their bedroom. But growing up in a religious, Serbian family in Geelong in the 90's meant Deni didn't know any gay people, so it wasn't until their late teens when they finally came out to their family. Deni came out again as non-binary in 2020, after non-binary musician Sam Smith gave a name to feelings Deni had been experiencing since childhood. In this episode Deni opens up to host Sean Szeps about how culture and religion intersects with their gender and sexuality, suppressing their sexuality to try and fit in as a kid and deliberately standing out as a gay, non-binary adult.
