DC Beer's Richard sits down with Julie Verratti of Denizens Brewing Co. and Mike Stein of DC Beer and Lost Lagers to talk about the upcoming release of a new American-style bock beer called Bock to the Future.An 80-Year Old BrewBock to the Future is the result of a collaboration between Mike Stein and Denizens' Chief Beer Officer, Jeff Ramirez, as part of the DC Beer's 10 Beers for 10 Years series. The inspiration for this beer came from the archival collection of American brewer Walter Voigt, which is located within the National Museum of American History's Archives. Voigt, who studied brewing at the famous Siebel Institute Of Technology in Chicago, left behind a recipe for an American-style bock last brewed in the 1930s. Mike and Jeff resurrected this recipe and began to brew Bock to the Future in September.A New Take on the American BockThis Voigt-inspired beer is a craft American-style bock brewed with a combination of pale malt, crystal malt, black malt, and rice; an Andechs yeast from Jasper Yeast; and Nugget and Willamette hops. Mike expects this simple grist to create a complex taste to give drinkers a traditional American bock flavor.Check out More History of American Craft Beer Bock to the Future brings alive the deep and rich history of American craft beer. The Riverdale Park Station location will open later this month with a full liquor license as well as a full kitchen with new menus. The two share how two locations will work together for distribution, and the beers and menus will be the same at both. Jeff explains that with a potential capacity of 7,500+ barrels, the new location will allow Denizens to make their year-round and seasonal blends in larger volumes. Jeff tells the Brew Daddies about some of the challenges that come with working with brand new stainless steel kegs, and jokes about the technological advances that this new location has versus the Silver Springs location. The Denizens Riverdale Park Station location will be opening on May 25, 2019!

The Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) was founded in 1985 to "to promote beer literacy and the appreciation of real beer, and to recognize beer tasting and evaluation skills." The approach to gain this certification is very hands on. Ben Hunter, Sales Manager for Denizens Brewing Co. and Certifed Beer Judge explains the process of studying for the certification. Surprise! A bonus episode for you today! If you're into Maryland beer, and you haven't heard of Julie Verratti and Emily Bruno of Denizens Brewing, can you tell me about the rock you've been living under? Does it have a walk-in closet? How's the square footage? Are utilities included?  Okay, that was a bit rude, and I'm sorry.  For those unfamiliar, Julie and Emily are married. And along with Emily's brother (and now brewmaster) Jeff Ramirez, founded Denizens Brewing in Silver Spring three years ago. (In fact, I wrote about their story and their anniversary earlier this year.) In that (relatively) short amount of time, they've made a name for themselves in both Maryland and Washington, D.C., for their beer, their space, and their authenticity, as well as their voice. 

Whether personal or professional, there are always types of risks when starting a new business. That’s often the case in the beer industry, where men and women quit their day jobs on a near daily basis to chase a dream of serving IPAs, Stouts, or Lagers to a thirsty public. These owners and brewers have a lot on the line. It's no different for the people behind Denizens brewing in Silver Springs Maryland, where family support helps to prop up very real risks of the three-year-old business. Denizens is doing just fine, by the way, having celebrated their anniversary not long ago with hundreds of friends and patrons. But it still means that checking the books at the end of every month carries a lot of weight. The public support behind the brewery, however, makes things easier for co-owners Jeff Ramirez and Julie Verratti. They’re two of the three people behind Denizens, who have created a community hotspot just over the border from Washington DC. A very specifically selected location, as you’ll hear, that connects deeply to the values of Jeff, Julie, and Emily Bruno, the third person behind Denizens. Among a spacious indoor and outdoor taproom, I recently sat down with Jeff and Julie to talk about all the things that they've learned in the first few years of operation. What those lessons are, and how they’re being integrated in the day-to-day, are bound to be a big big part of successes for all the other ambitious homebrewers and entrepreneurs looking to enter beer.
