Milt and Dave revisit the billboard top 10 hits from May 19, 1990, a significant date marking their college graduation. The duo analyzes, critiques, and discusses the lasting impact of songs like 'Vogue' by Madonna, 'Nothing Compares 2 U' by Sinéad O'Connor, and 'Poison' by Bell Biv Devoe. They also humorously reminisce about their younger days and milestone moments while navigating the chart. Additionally, the episode includes special segments such as the 'Substitution' where each host replaces a chart song with another hit from the same period. Highlights include debates over which hits have truly stood the test of time and personal anecdotes from their college years. Don't miss this nostalgic deep dive into the music of 1990. This week we're discussing 3 brothers from Boston, Massachusetts, who were able to bridge the gap between hip hop and R&B in a way that hadn't been done up until that point. Their music was “mentally Hip Hop, smoothed out on the R&B tip, with a Pop feel, appeal to it.” We're talking about Bell Biv Devoe. Made up of Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, and Ronnie DeVoe—all members of New Edition—they branched off and blew up in 1990 with Poison, an album that defined the "new jack swing" era, and this week just happens to be the 35th anniversary (damn!) of its release, so we decided to get into that and more! Here's a link to the playlist for this episode. If you enjoy the content that we're making and you're looking for ways to support our independent podcast, here's a little something that you can do:Please leave us a 5 star rating or review on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Podchaser or Goodpods. You can also drop a few coins in our tip jar here: https://ko-fi.com/troypodcast if you're feeling generous. If it's merch that you're looking for, check out our store, Nuthin' But A Tee Thang, at teethang.comSpreading the word about the show to your friends and family helps too.Sign up for our monthly newsletter, Liner Notes. However you choose to support, know that it is greatly appreciated as always.

90s R&B, the best genre of all time. In this episode, I discuss some of my favorite 90s R&B lyrics, authenticity and something called The Window of Tolerance, which is our sweet spot for dealing with intense emotions and stress. Plus some strategies for hitting that sweet spot, which can help combat anger, panic, irritability, anxiety, fight-or-flight instincts and disconnection. And this episode made me realize I don't know how to spell authenticity. Cool, right? On this special episode, they discuss how three former members of New Edition took R&B to a new level by blending rapping and singing, pull back the curtain on how the song was made (remember that iconic drum intro and those smooth harmonies?!), and state the case for why you should never trust a big butt and a smile.

On this episode, we are having a conversation about the 40+ year career of one of the greatest R&B groups of all time, and the inspiration for all of the boy bands that followed their blueprint. From direct descendants like New Kids On The Block and Boyz II Men, to current day acts like BTS, New Edition is “where it all started.” We talked about the early discography, Bobby Brown leaving the group after their 3rd album, the addition of Johnny Gill for the Heart Break album and the solo works of Bobby, Johnny, Ralph Tresvant, as well the Bell Biv Devoe projects. We also got into the many reunions over the years, including this current run with all six members participating. If it's merch that you're looking for, check out our store, Nuthin' But A Tee Thang, at teethang.comSpreading the word about the show to your friends and family helps too. However you choose to support, know that it is greatly appreciated as always.

As our last guest of 2022, it's only right that we bring on an artist who's been a major voice and influence within our city and scene for a long time now. When we think about the major R&B players from Boston we often refer to Bobby Brown, Mike Bivins and the rest of New Edition, but there are others who have played a hand in the story of others; even the guys just mention previously. So this week we welcome Cyrus Deshield, the singer/songwriter originally from Liberia who came to the South End section of Boston and became the Grammy nominated creative he is today! Some may remember Cyrus from being a part of the R&B group "617" which rebranded to "Metro City" while under the wing of the for NE Patriot Willie McGinest's record label and Interscope Records. What many don't know are the hardship's Cyrus had to face prior the music with even making his way to the states, the black-balling and politics he faced once he and his peers stepped into the industry, and all the moves he's made in the background as a ghostwriter for many. He's written for the likes of Bell Biv Devoe, New Edition, Musiq Soulchild (which earned him a Grammy nomination), and many more. Within our scene he's been the voice of many hooks with Millyz, Lou Armstrong, Slaine, and other notables. It goes without saying that EVERYBODY should know this man's name and hear his story of perseverance which is far from over!Join Charlie MaSheen, Shanelle Shanté, & KASH as we welcome Cyrus Deshield to the pod in what was a special occasion as he was in town for his nomination as "Best R&B artist" at this year's BMAs. After we won "Best Music Podcast of The Year" for 2 years consecutively, it was a great feeling to sit across a fellow nominee just one day after the award show to give him his flowers; win or lose! This conversation consisted of Cyrus's earliest memories of leaving a war riddled Liberia and heading to the US, the forming of his days within a group, the ugly side of the music game, AND SO MUCH MORE! DO NOT MISS OUT ON THIS POWERFUL INTERVIEW AND MAKE SURE YOU GO CHECK OUT ALL OF CYRUS DESHIELD's WORK AVAILABLE ON ALL DSPs!CHECK OUT ALL OF OUR CONTENT:http://www.linktr.ee/CWTFBradio
Benedek - "Emotional (feat. Devin Morrison)" from the 2022 Zebrano EP on Apron Records. Los Angeles-based producer/musician Benedek (real name: Nicholas Benedek) began playing guitar at the age of nine, and first started composing beats using his Nintendo Game Boy Camera software. With admiration for artists like Herbie Hancock and Jeff Beck, he's developed a unique style drawing from funk, hip-hop, soul, house, as well as science fiction and '90s video games. On today's Song of the Day, Benedek teams up with the soulful singer Devin Morrison for this '80s-inspired jam. (Do I detect a Bell Biv DeVoe inspiration?) Bandcamp calls the track a "slow burning ode to the West Coast," and with Morrison's laid-back vocals and that smooth R&B groove, it's the perfect song to make you forget it's autumn now.
