On the #amwriting podcast's “Margin Notes,” Jennie Nash talks with Dr. Diana Hill (author of Wise Effort) about how the urge to prove yourself—through resumes, accolades, or “pre-order my book” pleas—undermines authenticity and connection, especially when pitching ideas, proposals, or personal brands. Hill describes confronting this while rebranding her website and shifting from listing credentials to articulating the real user experience and who the work is and isn't for, using specific language that reflects her core value of awareness/attunement rather than generic, AI-like claims. They unpack the psychology behind proving (seeking safety, belonging, and autonomy) and suggest asking which need is driving the behavior, aiming instead to demonstrate value, embrace vulnerability, and rely on trusted “tough love” feedback.Books Mentioned* Wise Effort by Dr. Diana HillJoin the Blueprint Summer ChallengeStarting a book? Send us Fan MailMy guest today is Elisabeth Storrs, author of Fables and Lies, listed in the Visual Arts category on Art In Fiction.Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/lCJfOypSQr4The genesis of Fables and Lies: how a 30-year obsession with Priam's Gold and its mysterious disappearance after the Russians took it from Berlin led Elisabeth to create Freya, a young German woman working at the Museum of Pre- and Early History in Berlin as the war closes in.Himmler's SS Ahnenerbe, the pseudo-academic research institute that weaponized archaeology to justify Nazi ideology, and how the curator of Freya's museum being a member of it transformed what began as a novel about two women into something far more complex and sinister. The real inspiration behind Indiana Jones: Himmler's belief in the occult, Atlantis, and the Holy Grail, and the expeditions he sent to Tibet and Bolivia that Spielberg later drew on.Writing from inside the Nazi regime: Elisabeth's personal hesitation about telling the story from a German point of view given her father's experience as an Australian soldier in World War II, and why she decided the story needed to be told anyway. The Brenner family as microcosm: how Freya, her morally anchored father Konrad, her MAGA-adjacent mother Elsa, and her fully indoctrinated sister Volla each represent a different response to life under the Reich. Why Freya had to start as a true believer: the challenge of creating a protagonist who is indoctrinated, the small cracks in her worldview from the opening pages, and how Darien, the Cambridge-educated outsider archaeologist, opens her eyes.Berlin as a character in the novel: Elisabeth's research trip to the city, the walking tour with a Humboldt University history student, and the discovery that the Museum of Pre- and Early History sat next door to Gestapo headquarters on what is now the Topography of Terror site. The parallels to today: how Elisabeth finished the novel before the current global rise of fascism made it feel even more relevant, and what the preconditions for Hitler's rise in Weimar Germany have in common with what we are seeing now.The carpet bombing of Berlin, the Soviet artillery siege, and the absurdity of dropping leaflets telling civilians to overthrow the regime while destroying their city around them.A reading from the opening pages of Fables and Lies: Freya cycling home through Berlin on 24 August 1939, and her first encounter with Dieter, the jazz-loving teenager whose punishment plants the first seed of doubt. What Elisabeth is working on next: a four-timeline novel tracing Priam's Gold from a Bronze Age goldsmith in Troy through Schliemann's 1873 discovery, the Russian Trophy Brigade, and Freya's granddaughter piecing it all together in the 1990s.Read more about Elisabeth Storrs on her website: https://elisabethstorrs.com/Are you enjoying The Art In Fiction Podcast? In this week's episode, I'm joined by author Eloisa James to talk about her new release, The Last Lady B. Set in an isolated abbey, far north in Scotland, Evie finds herself thrust into the makings of a Gothic novel. What starts out as the hope of seeing a ghost, turns into the revelation that her new husband is not the man she thinks he is. James and I discuss the inspiration for creating a character who would rather have her nose in a book, and how that plays with Evie's expectations of her husband and the melodrama she has fallen into. She quickly learns that real life can be far more interesting - and satisfying - than the Gothic novels she loves. Once in the isolation of the abbey, Burnsby's true colors are quickly revealed; what follows is a story of comeuppance and rediscovery, as Evie reclaims her life for herself. In the end, this is a story about love, and how friendship, found family, and the unconditional love of a pet can help heal you, just as much as romantic love. The Last Lady B is out now! Heathar Shephard is a nutritionist, homeopath, and farm owner based in New Mexico — and her approach to health is unlike anything you've probably heard before. She grew up on a farm, left to train professional athletes, and then a car accident changed everything. A serious traumatic brain injury forced her off the field and into a deep, decade-long healing journey — one that eventually led her back to the land, to food, to the sun, and to a private practice she's been running for nearly 20 years. In this episode, we go deep. Really deep. What we cover:• Why glucose is your cells' preferred fuel — and what happens when you restrict it and why Keto, Carnivore, Low-Carb and Fasting feel only initially good and are not meant to be used longterm• The real reason fasting elevates estrogen and depletes progesterone• How to test your thyroid at home (temperature + pulse, not TSH)• Why most "healthy" seeds and vegetable oils may be working against you• The estrogen vs. progesterone conversation nobody is having clearly enough• What exercise really does to a struggling thyroid — and what to look out for when exercising instead• Dairy, fruit, orange juice, and honey as thyroid-supporting foodsFind Heathar:

Welcome back to Collecting Issues, the monthly comic book club where we assume you've done the reading (and we will judge you if you haven't). This week, Mick and Ben dive into the beautiful, mind-bending melange that is DC's runaway 2025 hit: Absolute Martian Manhunter Volume 1 (Issues #1-6).Written by Deniz Camp (20th Century Men) and illustrated by the masterful Javier Rodriguez (Zatana: Bring Down the House), this modern masterpiece takes everyone's favourite green shapeshifter and strips away any trace of humanity, leaning heavily into his pure, unabashed alienness. From Darkseid's hobo bindle full of malice to fourth-dimensional telepathic smoke, we are breaking down everything that makes this comic a massive, psychedelic triumph. In this episode, we discuss:The DC All-In Universe: How Darkseid separated from main continuity to create a gritty alternate universe where classic heroes are stripped of their greatest advantages.A New Take on John Jones: Exploring John as an emotionally avoidant, chain-smoking FBI stochastic agent who finds himself bonded with a bizarre, non-linear alien entity. The Mimetics of "Bad Ideas": We tackle the philosophical core of the comic: viral thoughts, "Bad Idea Zero," and whether the world can really be boiled down to just good and bad ideas.Mind-Blowing Comic Art: Javier Rodriguez puts on an absolute masterclass. We talk about synaesthesia-inspired telepathy, fourth-wall-breaking page layouts, and physical "hold-to-the-light" gimmicks that elevate the medium.Echoes of Comic Legends: How this run perfectly blends the bizarre 1955 Silver Age origins of Martian Manhunter with the abstract, conceptual mind-fights of Grant Morrison's The Invisibles and Doom Patrol.Next Month's Book: Get ready for a trip to the Valley! We will be reading the absolute, seminal 90s classic Bone by Jeff Smith. Highlights: The Cavaliers' loss to a shorthanded OKC team is seen as a mid-season warning about the team's focus and potential matchup issues rather than a cause for major alarm. The Allen-Mobley frontcourt combination continues to raise questions about its effectiveness, particularly against quick, physical teams, suggesting their minutes may need to be staggered. A discussion on Evan Mobley's role suggests he should focus on defense rather than being a primary creator, with a potential trade being considered if the team falters in the playoffs. Host Terry Pluto has reversed his initial opposition to the James Harden trade after learning the severity of Darius Garland's lingering injury, now valuing Harden's durability. Recent acquisitions are expected to provide the Cavaliers with a needed injection of toughness and defensive intensity. Speculation about another LeBron James return to Cleveland is dismissed as premature and unlikely, especially given the James Harden trade and James's current career stage. The Browns plan a "targeted aggression" strategy in free agency, prioritizing veteran additions to their depleted offensive line. It is suggested the Browns should use at least two of their top 70 draft picks to rebuild the offensive line, with a specific focus on drafting a long-term center. Why new Browns Defensive Coordinator Mike Rutenberg's success will depend on his ability to earn the respect of and effectively manage veteran stars like Myles Garrett and Denzel Ward. The signing of slugger Reese Hoskins is seen as a "vintage Guardians" move, addressing a major need for right-handed power on a value deal. Steven Kwan's elite instincts may help him succeed in the more demanding position in center. It is argued that Major League Baseball, not the Guardians, should bear the financial responsibility for Emmanuel Clase's salary while his legal situation is managed by the league. Terry's statistical review of prospects suggests Chase DeLauter is more prepared for a major league opportunity than Travis Bazzana, emphasizing performance over draft position. José Ramírez's clubhouse leadership is highlighted through an anecdote where he publicly boosted a teammate's confidence, reinforcing his role as the team's heart. The podcast ends with a nostalgic discussion on classic sports board games, highlighting how they cultivated imagination and a connection to sports in a pre-digital era. It's said, pain is inevitable, suffering is optional. But, is that true? Many of us live our lives in pursuit of certainty, believing that if we could just get things more stable - emotionally, financially, relationally - then we'd finally feel at ease. We wouldn't struggle with anxiety, stress, and fear. we wouldn't suffer so much. Problem is, that approach often deepens our suffering, rather than relieves it. Maybe you've felt this very thing. In this powerful episode on healing and resilience and how to relieve suffering, Jonathan sits down with Dr. Suzan Song, a Harvard- and Stanford-trained psychiatrist and humanitarian researcher. Dr. Song has spent decades working with individuals and communities living through profound instability, revealing a gentler, more honest reframe: healing, lessening suffering, doesn't come from chasing certainty and stability, but from learning how to relate differently to the inevitability of pain, uncertainty, and change. In this conversation, discover:Why pain is inevitable, but suffering often grows from the stories we tell. The hidden role of our nervous system and memory in shaping our experience of hardship. The power of ritual—not as performance, but as a path to emotional grounding and resilience. What purpose really is, and why it's often already present, woven into our lives through mattering. How genuine healing happens in relationship, not in isolation, transforming our approach to mental health. This is an invitation to stop blaming yourself for not feeling satisfied, let go of suffering, and remember that you don't have to navigate life's instabilities alone. Sometimes, relief comes not from doing more, but from allowing yourself to feel everything, then learn how to live with the truth of uncertainty in a world that will never stop changing. You can find Suzan at: Website | Linkedin | Episode TranscriptIf you LOVED this episode, you'll also love the conversations we had with Adam Grant about rethinking beliefs and inner patterns.Check out our offerings & partners: Join My New Writing Project: Awake at the WheelVisit Our Sponsor Page For Great Resources & Discount Codes Hosted on Acast. In this episode, I wanted to share with you one of the most popular episodes from the last year. This episode is a favourite because it addresses a question that makes many coaches cringe: “So… what do you actually do?” If networking, referrals, or informal conversations play any role in your marketing, how you answer this question really matters. In this episode, I explore why traditional elevator pitches often feel awkward for coaches. Most of us really deeply value service and humility, which can make self-promotion uncomfortable. As a result, we either over-explain our work or downplay it, leaving people unclear about who we help and when to refer to us. I share a simple, stress-free alternative to the standard elevator pitch. If you want a clear, comfortable way to answer “what do you do?” and open the door to more meaningful conversations and referrals, this episode is a great place to start. Listen in and let me know what you think! If you'd like feedback on your own soundbite, feel free to share it with me on LinkedIn. Guest Spotlight Today's episode features a conversation between Crosspoint host Josh Jackson and LTC Brittany Simmons, USA (Ret.). Brittany served 20 years in the Army Military Police Corps, including deployment to Iraq as a platoon leader from 2004-2005. In this episode, Brittany challenges the common individualistic reading of the Armor of God passage in Ephesians 6. Drawing from her combat experience and understanding of Roman military formations, she explains why Paul's analogy was always meant to be understood not only individually, but also collectively—as a unit linking shields together, not isolated soldiers fighting alone. She discusses finding battle buddies, the danger of spiritual isolation, and practical ways to intentionally build Christian community whether you're actively serving, recently relocated, or settled in one place. Brittany also mentions two upcoming events, which women can attend for Biblical teaching, fellowship, and more: OCF Leading Women: 20-22 March at White Sulphur Springs in Manns Choice, Pa. Summer Celebration #4B (Women's Track): 28 June-3 July at Spring Canyon in Buena Vista, Colo. If you would like to share your own story, complete the form on OCF's "Be a Guest" webpage. Alternatively, if you have an idea for a guest or topic we should consider for a future episode of the show, send an email to podcast@ocfusa.org. Points to ponder As you listen to this conversation with Brittany, here are a few questions to ponder in your personal time, with a small group, or with a mentor: When you read Ephesians 6:10-18, do you naturally think of individual armor or collective defense? Why? Who are the "battle buddies" in your spiritual life right now—people you're intentionally linking shields with? Brittany mentions that in combat, soldiers who go off alone become the most vulnerable. Where in your spiritual life might you be trying to fight alone? How does understanding prayer as "communication with the Commander" change the way you approach it—both individually and collectively? What's one practical step you could take this week to find or deepen community with other believers? How might your military experience give you unique insight to share with civilian Christians about the power of working together? This week's Success is Subjective guest, Chrissy Nichols, spent more than two decades teaching before discovering her true calling—helping learners of all ages understand how their brains actually work. As an executive function coach, Chrissy specializes in guiding young adults (often returning from therapeutic or wilderness programs) to find balance, accountability, and self-trust through what she calls “love-hammer coaching”—a blend of compassion and tough honesty that empowers lasting change. In this conversation with Joanna Lilly, Chrissy shares how growing up with an undiagnosed ADHD brain led her to design her own hacks for organization and focus, eventually turning those same strategies into tools for others. She and Joanna explore what it means to un-shame the brain, why traditional “just try harder” messages fail, and how foundational routines—sleep, hydration, movement, fuel, and reflection—create the mental bandwidth needed to thrive. This episode is an encouraging reminder that success isn't about perfection or productivity—it's about connection, curiosity, and learning to meet yourself where you are.Chrissy's Resources: Chrissy's WebsiteComplementary ConsultationFacebook: The Chrissy ConceptConnect with Joanna Lilley Therapeutic Consulting AssociationLilley Consulting WebsiteLilley Consulting on Facebook Lilley Consulting on YouTubeEmail joanna@lilleyconsulting.com#TherapeuticConsulting #LilleyConsulting #Successful #TherapeuticPrograms #Therapy #MentalHealthMatters #Podcast #PodcastCommunity #TheJourney #SuccessIsSubjectivePodcast #TheUnpavedRoad #PFCAudioVideo #EmotionalHealing #AimHouse #TraumaRecovery #ExecutiveFunctioningSkills #TheChrissyConcept #BurnoutPrevention #MindBodyBalance

Mike Keen came up with the idea of a kayak expedition off the coast of Greenland before he had any clue about how transformative it would be for his life and health and worldview! Today, he dives into what went down—what it was like eating the traditional Inuit diet (including fermented seal!), how his body responded to the kayaking and change in diet, and insights gathered by the microbiologists examining his stool samples (yes, his poop). Now, he has planned to explore more remote places and to continue diving into traditional diets to see how his body responds. A former chef, Mike now admits that he learned more from this experience kayaking around Greenland than from the many decades prior, when he was purchasing and preparing overly processed foods. When you think of the First World War, what springs to mind? Is it trench warfare? The myth that troops would be home by Christmas? Or perhaps the idea that the whole thing began because of the assassination of an Austro-Hungarian archduke? In this episode, we're going beyond these narratives to consider alternative perspectives of the opening weeks of the conflict. Rachel Dinning is joined by historian Alex Churchill – co-author of new book 'Ring of Fire' alongside Nikolai Eberholst – to consider fresh perspectives of the conflict, highlighting the voices of ordinary people caught up in the war, as well as how it unfolded across the globe. Alex is the presenter of the new HistoryExtra academy series WW1: Myths and Misconceptions – which is out now and available to watch on the HistoryExtra App. In the series, Alex unpacks some of the most enduring myths about World War One – exploring topics such as the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, the complexities of wartime neutrality, why the war didn't truly end on 11 November 1918, and much more.
