Hey there! Send us a message. Who else should we be talking to? What topics are important? Use FanMail to connect! Let us know!Season 6 - Episode 138Ever wondered how academic research can transform real-world policing? Join me as I reconnect with Brenda Bond-Fortier, a professor at Suffolk University in Boston, who shares her journey from the Lowell Police Department to academia. Brenda's passion for bridging the gap between research and practice shines through as she recounts her career under Ed Davis, her innovative role as Director of Research and Development, and her current work with 21CP Solutions. Discover how Brenda's unique insights are helping police departments across the nation implement research-driven strategies for organizational improvement.Explore the critical role that diverse perspectives play in both healthcare and policing. Brenda and I discuss the transformative power of bringing in external experts to combat insularity and introduce fresh viewpoints. Drawing parallels with healthcare responses to crises like the pandemic and the opioid epidemic, we highlight the benefits of a multi-disciplinary approach in addressing complex social issues. In policing, this means rethinking who should be at the decision-making table to ensure comprehensive solutions, particularly for mental health and social challenges.Leadership in policing isn't just about managing internal issues but innovation and reform. Brenda and I delve into the complexities police leaders face, such as balancing internal challenges with external expectations. We illustrate how unconventional approaches can lead to significant changes by sharing real-world examples like offender reentry initiatives. We also explore the potential of applying the SARA model beyond crime fighting to foster continuous improvement and capacity building within police departments. Tune in for a hopeful outlook on the positive changes in police organizations and the vital importance of meeting evolving public expectations.Read Brenda's book:Organizational Change in an Urban Police Department: Innovating to Reform, 1st Edition, Routledge (2020)Find on Amazon at the link below:https://www.amazon.com/Building-Adaptive-Police-Organization-Relationships/dp/1138190209/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3D9YGK2E8HXUI&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.ODsrKHt4KvRW8-_1Bw3lh0jraY0HGqXVI1dk9XgLFYU.cMVtIHissXHfP_J4Ox3UQ_txQdITxIR2QdRbyYjiD0Y&dib_tag=se&keywords=organizational+change+brenda+bond&qid=1725192885&s=books&sprefix=orgnaizational+change+brenda+bond%2Cstripbooks%2C89&sr=1-1Contact us: copdoc.podcast@gmail.com Website: www.copdocpodcast.comIf you'd like to arrange for facilitated training, or consulting, or talk about steps you might take to improve your leadership and help in your quest for promotion, contact Steve at stephen.morreale@gmail.com

Mike Powell's blood and guts stories go far beyond his days working as a plainclothes officer in one of LAPD's Zebra Units—a unit tasked with tracking down violent criminals in South Central L.A. “Shootin' Newton” was notorious for its many police shootings, including the Black Panther and Symbionese Liberation Army shootouts. Two of Mike's four shootings occurred in Newton.Mike and his partners tracked down murder suspects, bank robbers, and a serial killer: a killer of young boys. Mike's police stories take us back to the days when cops were allowed to be cops and when police chiefs like LAPD's Ed Davis and Daryl Gates sent former military “warrior cops” into the streets to hunt down violent criminals.Mike also served as a key undercover operative for both the LAPD, undercover as a woman, and the federal government, undercover in the MAFIA, and he lived to write about it. If you've seen the movie Casino, then you have seen the mobsters he brushed shoulders with.Mike ended his investigative and undercover career after he received several death threats, and his home was set ablaze while he and his first wife, Manette, were in it. Growing up with a dad (Terry) who played 10 seasons in the NBA, you might expect that Ed Davis was pushed from the time he could hold a basketball. But his father let Ed's love of the game develop naturally before training him on the court, at the track, and in the weight room when he was a teenager. Ed also benefited from a mom who let him put basketball first, pickup games with the likes of Ben Wallace at Virginia Union, and the discipline and timekeeping he learned at a private military school. All these things helped Ed become a top-10 high school prospect and McDonald's High School All-American. His decision to play for Roy Williams at UNC was vindicated when the team won the national championship his freshman year. After his sophomore season, Ed declared for the 2010 NBA Draft and was picked 13th by the Toronto Raptors. In his 12-year career, he also played for the Grizzlies, Lakers, Jazz, Nets, and Cavaliers, and led the league in offensive rebounding rate one season. In this episode, Ed dishes on:· Why he chose to fight for playing time at North Carolina over starting at other schools· How breaking his wrist against Duke changed his pre-draft process· Why the Transfer Portal, NIL, and mixtapes have changed high school and college basketball · How guidance from Reggie Evans and DeMar DeRozan helped him navigate his rookie year· Who was his worst coach in the NBA and how this contrasted with the leadership of Quin Snyder and Roy WilliamsKeep up with Ed on Twitter @eddavisXVII.

New episodes released on Tuesday and Thursday. If you're in the UK, listen first on BBC Sounds. Connie Prynne lives a small life with her daughter, Claire, in Los Angeles. But when she is diagnosed with breast cancer she is forced to start addressing her past, a life she hasn't told Claire or anyone about, a New York life, Emily's life; a mess of a failed marriage, an affair and an accidental pregnancy that saw Emily fake her death post-9/11 and run away to LA. If the breast cancer gets worse she needs to create a safe world for Claire, but how honest does she need to be with her daughter? We follow Connie in the present as she grapples with cancer treatment, her role as a mother and relationship with Claire. But she also leads us back through her memories of being Emily and tries to make sense of the past she's tried so hard to forget and move on from. But with the threat of her own death, she has to find answers from her first death. Will the mistakes of her past derail or save Connie's present?
