Oregon’s storied craft brewing industry suffered one of its worst years in 2023, with depressed draft beer sales and rising costs creating more pressure than some of the state’s businesses could bear. According to the Oregon Brewers Guild, the state is home to about 400 breweries, brewpubs and taprooms, with 50,000 jobs and generates nearly $9 billion in economic output. But the state lost around 30 of those businesses last year and even more have contracted or are seriously struggling. We’re joined by Sonia Marie Leikam, the co-owner of Leikam Brewing and vice president of the Oregon Brewers Guild, and Laurelwood Brewing Company owner Mike De Kalb, who closed down his last retail location last year.

So, why cancel the deal? Steve Paikin and John Michael McGrath discuss the details and the shrewd politics involved. The sale of alcohol is expanding in the Province of Ontario to include corner stores, big box retailers, and gas stations by 2026. The province has already received a failing grade for its alcohol control measures from organizations like the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, so why not fail even harder? Did you see all the madness going around last week over the rumor that the Biden administration was going to tell Americans they can only have 2 beers a week?  It was crazy and, from what we read, seemed to be an off the cuff comment blown out of proportion, but it made for some good discussion.Larry Horwitz, currently with Crooked Hammock Brewery, but with a long resume, joined us on the show this week.  We learn a bit about his brewery and what they're up to, talk about the changing craft beer industry, and ponder the impact that legal weed has on craft beer.  There's some lager talk, and Larry debunks his nickname of the Light Lager Whisperer, but that doesn't mean he doesn't enjoy them. As part of the Brewers Associations draft beer committee Larry tells us about the challenges facing draft and the "state of the industry" for draft beer.  We also get a great story about (the beer writer) Michael Jackson and peanut butter beer.  Good times.Annnnnnd.... we are now OFFICIALLY able to get into Oktoberfest beers!  We did exactly that last weekend and there's more to come.  Happy Holidays! The Beer ListCrooked Hammock Brewery - Wide Eyed WitOmmegang - Gnommegang Belgian-Style Blonde AleOther Half Triple Mylar DaydreamVictory - Prima PilsThanks for listening to Beer Guys Radio! Until a few years ago, alcohol at college sporting events was a delicate dance in hypocrisy. Back in 1991 without a special exemption, the sale of alcohol was not allowed at public university facilities. You could always tailgate with your own booze before the game and universities would hold private events where alcohol was available, but there was no public sale. In this cross-over episode with “Brief History of Triangle Sports”, Joe Ovies highlights the time when the Raleigh-Durham Skyhawks played at NC State's Carter-Finley Stadium. The prohibition of beer sales presented a loss of revenue for the team and frankly a lack of fun for fans. But look at how times have changed!
