This special episode of the podcast is brought to you in partnership with Encompass Technologies, and explores how breweries are using data to create savvier approaches to distribution and growth. It's no secret that it's become harder to sell beer over the past few years, with two consecutive years where brewery closures have outpaced openings. Distributors are far less bullish on craft beer than they once were. Broader economic pressure has led to more price sensitivity in certain segments of consumers, while operating costs for breweries have skyrocketed, compressing margins and making it ever more important to forecast correctly. As things tighten, waste is just not an option, and breweries and distributors can't afford to not get it right the first time. Breweries that are making great beer but also using data to drive decision making while managing distributor relationships with intention, are able to thrive despite the challenges in the current economic environment. Joining for this conversation on how breweries can use data to drive decision making and optimize their relationships with distributors and by extension retailers are: Ryan Bandy, Chief Business Officer, Indeed Brewing Patrick Tickle, CEO, Encompass Technologies Growth may be harder to find in the current macroeconomic environment, but it's not impossible, and with the right products, right strategies, and right tools, breweries like Indeed are achieving growth despite the industry headwinds.
Asahi Breweries Ltd. said Thursday that its sales of beer and quasi-beer products in January fell 11pctin value from a year before, as the company has been reducing shipments following a cyberattack on its parent company last September.

How do you go from zero to $10 million in funded mortgages in your first year—without a database, brand, or past clients? Thom Brow left a successful career in craft beer sales and started fresh as a mortgage broker. One year later, he's built a $10M business from scratch— powered by focused prospecting, referral presentations, and his own custom-built AI tools. On this week's Modern Retail Podcast, senior reporters Melissa Daniels and Gabriela Barkho Barkho kick things off with a look at Constellation Brands' declining beer sales. The Modelo and Corona owner is facing tariffs and weaker demand from its large Hispanic consumer base, which makes up half of its U.S. sales. Later in the episode (9:27), Modern Retail's e-commerce platforms reporter, Allison Smith, joins the show for a roundtable on how Prime Day and accompanying deals galore went over. With sales off to a slow start for Amazon's four-day summer event, some wonder whether it's a bellwether for decline in consumer sentiment.

A bit of good news for beer...Per Brewbound the New Year started off OK for beer. Sales were up double digits for the sector as a whole, and craft beer saw an 8.7% increase. After ringing in 2025 the numbers may dip a bit, as is tradition for January. For those choosing to go dry, NA beer is the beverage of choice. A poll showed 60% of those participating in Dry January chose NA beer over other NA beverages. 10% preferred NA spirits, and 13% chose NA wine. We have sampled NA win but the numbers aren't surprising based on the NA liquors we've tried. They still got some work to do.Brewers come together for wildfire reliefBrewers are the best. As expected, there's a collective effort to support relief for the Los Angeles wildfires, spearheaded by Common Space Brewery. They say this will mostly impact products that are "duplicative." Let's see how they define that.In other news... USDA issued their National Hop Report, with plantings down, as expected. Oregon’s storied craft brewing industry suffered one of its worst years in 2023, with depressed draft beer sales and rising costs creating more pressure than some of the state’s businesses could bear. According to the Oregon Brewers Guild, the state is home to about 400 breweries, brewpubs and taprooms, with 50,000 jobs and generates nearly $9 billion in economic output. But the state lost around 30 of those businesses last year and even more have contracted or are seriously struggling. We’re joined by Sonia Marie Leikam, the co-owner of Leikam Brewing and vice president of the Oregon Brewers Guild, and Laurelwood Brewing Company owner Mike De Kalb, who closed down his last retail location last year.

Did you see all the madness going around last week over the rumor that the Biden administration was going to tell Americans they can only have 2 beers a week? It was crazy and, from what we read, seemed to be an off the cuff comment blown out of proportion, but it made for some good discussion.Larry Horwitz, currently with Crooked Hammock Brewery, but with a long resume, joined us on the show this week. We learn a bit about his brewery and what they're up to, talk about the changing craft beer industry, and ponder the impact that legal weed has on craft beer. There's some lager talk, and Larry debunks his nickname of the Light Lager Whisperer, but that doesn't mean he doesn't enjoy them. As part of the Brewers Associations draft beer committee Larry tells us about the challenges facing draft and the "state of the industry" for draft beer. We also get a great story about (the beer writer) Michael Jackson and peanut butter beer. Good times.Annnnnnd.... we are now OFFICIALLY able to get into Oktoberfest beers!
