Days after the Titanic submersible, the Coast Guard announced yesterday that the passengers suffered a “catastrophic implosion”. We opened the lines to see how listeners are reacting. Eliot Fisk and Zaira Meneses performed for live music Friday ahead of their Boston Guitar Fest. Sue O'Connell offered her thoughts on the Titan implosion, the Musk/Zuckerberg cage match and more. Lisa Simmons, Hank Shocklee and John Oluwole ADEkoje discussed the Roxbury International Film Festival. Lisa is the festival director, and John and Hank's latest film YE! is playing at the festival. Andy Ihnatko talked about the new Apple VR goggles, plus drama unfolding on the social media platform Reddit. Euniss Yoyo and Dereck Medina are members of the Hyde Square Task Force, the group of teenagers who found that Stop and Shop charges 18% more for groceries in a predominantly BIPOC part of Boston compared with a branch in Dedham. They joined alongside Ken Tangvik, senior manager of organizing and engagement for HSTF. It's Summer… or is it? We asked listeners about their beach rituals with a focus on whether music should be played out loud.

CASSATT STRING QUARTET & ELIOT FISK, GUITAR September 18, 2022 Gordon Hall, Music Mountain (Sun Quartets Concert #6/6)   HAYDN String Quartet in F Minor, Op. 20 #5GODFREY Guitar QuintetTURINA The Bullfighter's PrayerBOCCHERINI Guitar Quintet in D Major, G.448, “Fandango” Since 1930, generations of music lovers have come to Music Mountain for an exceptional concert experience and audiences continue to praise the outstanding quality and consistency of the events at Music Mountain, the exceptional acoustics of air-conditioned Gordon Hall, and the beauty and peaceful serenity of Music Mountain's mountaintop grounds. While The New Yorker has described Music Mountain as “the summer shrine of the string quartet,” recent concertgoers see Music Mountain as “a peaceful green oasis” and highlight its “amazing venue, ambience, and experience.” Music Mountain, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, began as the unique vision of Jacques Gordon, Chicago Symphony concertmaster from 1921 to 1930 and the founding first violinist of the Gordon String Quartet, one of the leading quartets of its time. The buildings at Music Mountain form a well-designed campus in the Colonial Revival style. They were built by Sears, Roebuck & Company's prefabricated housing division and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Nicholas Gordon, the son of Jacques Gordon, was president of Music Mountain from 1974 until his death in 2017. With an encyclopedic knowledge of chamber music and performing quartets, he expanded the teaching programs, and arranged for broadcasts of Music Mountain concerts that reach over one million listeners nationwide and in 45 countries. As artistic and executive director, as well as principal fundraiser, Nick's guidance included not only traditional chamber music classics, but also the introduction of Twilight Jazz Concerts on Saturday nights. Nick believed Music Mountain's longevity is due to the fact it has been faithful to its mission and is supported by a dedicated community sharing a passion and love of music--traditions that are alive and well today. Since 2016, artistic director Oskar Espina-Ruiz and Music Mountain's dedicated board of directors steer Music Mountain through a period of continued growth.

While David was visiting tonebase HQ up in San Francisco, he was able to last minute track down Richard Savino for an interview on the podcast. In this episode, Richard shares with us some of the fascinating stories from his long career as one of the foremost early music instrumentalists such as his recent project recording 25 soundtracks to accompany a specific collection of Rembrandt paintings. Topics also drift to technical aspects such as why he chooses to use nails even though most of his time is spent playing gut-string instruments including the 19th century guitar, lute, and theorbo. About the artist: Richard Savino is a Grammy nominated guitarist and lutenist who has recorded extensively boasting a catalog of over 35 commercial recordings. In addition to his busy career as a recording and performing artist, Richard is also an avid writer and music researcher. A professor at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Richard passes down knowledge he has learned from his long list of legendary instructors which include Andres Segovia, Oscar Ghiglia, Eliot Fisk, and many more.

It's 125 years this year since the birth of classical guitar virtuoso Andres Segovia in Linares, Spain (1893). Segovia's sound, technique, phrasing, and choice of repertoire changed the face of the instrument. He also changed the career of guitarist Eliot Fisk, the guest on this edition Fishko Files. Unlike any other guitar duo I have come across, the Andreas Kapsalis and Goran Ivanovic Guitar Duo (maybe just the AKGI Duo?) have created a truly distinct sound with their blend of steel string, eight-finger tapping, and the refinement of beauty and refinement of the classical guitar. Their compositional style effortlessly blends jazz, classical, pop, and experimental musical styles, adding a heavy dose of Balkan folklore among other rhythmically complex traditions. During their All Strings Considered interview, Andreas and Goran discuss their very different backgrounds in guitar playing, they give insights into improvisation and composition, and basically made me want to go out and start up a rock band. Andreas recounts his discovery of tapping technique resulting from a serious injury to his left hand and his experiences composing film music, while Goran tells of his classical training at the Mozarteum in Salzburg with Joaquín Clerch and Eliot Fisk, and his explorations into his musical roots in the folklore of Macedonia, Romania, Croatia, and Bulgaria. You will hear some really evocative music from their eponymous album, as well as get a sneak preview of their upcoming release titled Blackmail with “The Imposter” and the groovy 7/8-meter of “Kalkutation.” Enjoy!

I had a quick phone conversation with Vladimir Gorbach, the 2011 Guitar Foundation of America International Concert Artists Competition winner! Vladimir is currently about halfway through his GFA sponsored concert and masterclass tour, with performances in Oregon, Texas, and Arizona in January 2013, and California, New York, Florida, and Minnesota in February, and quite a few more. It was really interesting to hear about how Vladimir prepared and practiced for the competition, his philosophy on competitions in general, and to hear some of the music he's playing on his tour program. You'll hear him play a Scarlatti sonata, Vicente Asencio's Collectici Intim, and my personal favorite, his amazing interpretation of Piazzolla's Estaciones Porteñas.
