June 24th, 2006. Historic Fort York, Toronto. Twenty-two songs, and buried at number fourteen is a track The Tragically Hip only ever played nine times. That is the version we spin. Same night they pulled '38 Years Old' out of the vault for the first time since July of 1995. Nine plays for 'No Threat', per Hipbase and setlist.fm, and one of those nine got audited live on this stream. There was an entry claiming November 15th, 1991. Andrew went after it, Steve pulled the tape down to check, and the correction went in while the mics were still hot.'No Threat' opens "Yer Favourites", the November 2005 double disc where fans voted on every track except the two nobody had heard yet. This one, and 'The New Maybe' closing disc two. Adam Kasper made both, the same man who made "In Between Evolution" the year before. Track one is the brand new song. Track two is 'Grace, Too'. Kevin has a word for that sequencing decision, and the word is bold.It landed at 85 on the TTHTop40 Countdown, between 'Daredevil' and 'Sherpa'. Then the poll came back from the Facebook group with a stack of loves, which was nobody's prediction at this table, plus eight percent who came right out and said they dislike it. Steve did not vote. Steve tells us where he would have landed, and it opens something bigger than the song: what do you do with a band you love and songs you don't? He has a list. He is not sorry about the list. Then there is the guitar. Jeff from Vaughan puts it in the chat first, that it is the guitar that doesn't work here, and Kevin has been circling the same thing all week. A chord that goes somewhere your ear refuses to follow. He can tell you which side of the mix it comes from and which of the two of them is playing it.WHAT ELSE IS IN HERE• Yelly Gord. Andrew's name for the thing that starts here and does not stop, straight through 'Yer Not the Ocean' and into a version of 'Blow at High Dough' that is barely a word any more. Where it came from, and which album this song belonged on instead.• Kevin catches the flip. First person the whole way through, and then for one line it isn't, and there is a woman in the room.• The last thing Gord says in the song. Nobody here can explain it. Three theories, no verdict, and one line jD reads out that stops everybody cold: you die to your fans one window at a time.• Andrew went hunting the origin story. Nine or ten full shows from 1996, chasing a rant that is supposed to be the seed of this song. He did not find it. He found something else about peacekeeping that he cannot now unhear.• The Hip headlined the first two concerts ever held at the Air Canada Centre. Steve knows who opened, and who played the third night.• The anniversary weekend. jD in Kingston for Springer Market Square, murals and painted guitars all over a town that does not normally do it up. Steve stretched it over three days in Toronto and got a west end blackout two songs into the last show. Kevin was in Ireland.• The live record, and the two songs on it that are not live. Andrew has a fix.• End of summer picks. Steve's 'The Dire Wolf' and a whole summer in Kingston in 2002. Andrew's '11th Fret', a hangover song and he means that kindly. Kevin's 'Three Pistols', Tom Thomson and Algonquin Park. Steve's first answer was not one of theirs at all, and he owns it on air.Next week the wheel lands on 'Putting Down' from "Music @ Work". Which the band played at Fort York that same June night in 2006, four songs before this one. So there's that.THE PANEL• Kevin from Sarnia. First time at the table. He was buying every one of these records the week it came out and cannot remember buying this one, which tells you something. Plays in a cover band called 402 West, named for the highway between London and Sarnia.• Andrew from Winnipeg. Back again, and the closest thing this show has to a research department. Plays bass in Crooked Ice, whose record is "Dark Stars", and he cut the video too. His radio show and podcast is Soup Full of Radio.• Steve from Toronto. Fourth time on a jD show inside a month, which he points out himself. At Fort York in 2006, in the building in Kingston in 2016. He rides for the Tragically Clipped, a Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation team that began as an act of spite between two friends and has raised over $200,000 since. What happened to one of his riders at a rest stop is worth the wait.GEDFEST TORONTO - SATURDAY, OCTOBER 17The Horseshoe Tavern, with Grace, 2. Fret Not Thyself ( Psalm 37 )
Dave Peyton inspired our writing of this song.West Virginia's greatest defender — and her harshest critic — Dave spoke tirelessly from his popular newspaper columns and in his frequent radio and television appearances…… but also anywhere else that people would listen, in coffee shops and at conferences, in living rooms and at dinner tables, on concert stages and in our band room between our weekly tunes.Railing against what he saw as the relentless ravaging of the state, he'd say, “Sometimes I think the worst thing that ever happened to West Virginia was when somebody discovered coal.“But they never stop,” he'd add. “First they came for the timber. Now, after they're done murdering the mountains, they'll find something else to take from us.”Whispered LegacyWhat bothered Dave as much as what they took was what the exploiters left behind: a paralyzing — if seldom-spoken — sense of guilt running through generations of Mountain State natives, a communal sorrow for not being able to stop the rape of our home.“It is whispered if spoken at all,” as our song says: Of a broken trust and a grief that must Be the cut that has wounded us all.A half dozen years before Peyton's death in 2020, his words inspired us, and “Murder of Mountains” started taking shape. With it now finally finished, we are pleased to have it as a tribute to Dave and to all he taught us.“Star of the County Down”The melody we use for our new song is the late Joe Dobbs' version of the Irish tune called “Star of the County Down,” and thereby hangs another tale.Back in the early 1980s, when Joe's Fret ‘n Fiddle music store was still in its original location on Huntington's West 14th Street, a bluegrass mandolin player from Boston was passing through and spent a few nights at the Dobbs house. During a jam session there, the lad played this tune, and Joe loved it. When asked about it, the man said, “It's an Irish song, but we've Americanized it.”A few months later at the next Bowen Bash, Joe taught it to the the rest of us, as you can hear in the above video (extracted, incidentally, from our Bowen Bash Legacy Film Series). It turns out that Joe's house guest had been taking lessons up in Boston from an Irish fiddler. “I guess that's where he got it,” Joe said.Anyway, for years, Joe and his Flood brothers played “Star of the County Down” in the same moody, stately manner as he had learned from that kind Yankee visitor. It was only later — decades later, in fact — that Joe learned just how “Americanized” the song had been.Say What Now?That was when another visitor — this one a fiddler from Ireland — later listened to Joe's rendition and asked the name of the melody. He was surprised when Joe told him, “Why, that's ‘Star of the County Down.'”“Really?” the visitor said. “Well,” he added sheepishly, “there's good news and bad news, Joe. The good news is that it's really lovely! The bad news is that's not how that tune goes.”“What?!” Joe said. “Well,” the stranger said, “I've never heard anyone play only the harmony part. Uh …. Here's how we play it.” The visitor feared his revelation would embarrass or anger his host, but, on the contrary, Joe found the news hilarious. The rest of The Flood did too.“So,” Dave chortled, “guess we oughta write some words to go with that song you wrote, Joe,” planting a seed in Charlie Bowen's mind that only now is bearing fruit in “Murder of Mountains.”Epilogue IHere's a footnote to the “Star of the County Down” part of this story. The Flood finally took steps to set the melodic record straight when back in 2020 the guys went into Paul Martin's studio to record their Speechless: The Instrumentals album. In the years after Joe's death, Doug Chaffin had stepped up to play The Flood's fiddle. Click the button to hear his rendition of “Star” from those sessions. In it you hear Doug open the number by faithfully stating the melody that Joe brought us all those years ago. Then the album's guest artist, Floodster Emeritus Stewart Schneider, comes forward for a fine Autoharp solo that nails the original melody as it is played in the aire's Irish homeland. After that, the track rocks back and forth between the two variations.Epilogue IIBy the way, we have also felt it appropriate to add “Murder of Mountains” to the curated “West Virginia Blend” playlist in our free Radio Floodango music streaming service. Click below to read all about this particular special blend. And remember, we've now got ways to mobilize the ol' Floodanago. Join us this evening for A Quick 15-minute moment of devotion and prayer with Reverend Joshua Jordan, M.T.A.M., from Psalm 37 NIV
Episode Title: Be Anxious for Nothing — Cultivating Faithfulness Through Earnest Prayer Welcome to For Zion's Sake, hosted by Sheldon N. Volk (Shelley) and June (Juni). In this episode, Shelley and Juni continue their timely discussion on overcoming anxiety, worry, and the universal stressors that weigh down the human heart. By looking closely at the biblical definition of anxiety—which in the original Greek means to be "drawn away in another direction"—they explore how unchecked worry pulls our focus off God and causes literal depression. Learn how to transform prayer from a last resort into your first line of defense, cultivating a life of peace and deep trust in God's promises. Key Takeaways: The Root of Depression: A powerful look at how anxiety in the heart physically and spiritually weighs a person down, serving as a primary catalyst for situational depression. Prayer as an Offensive Weapon: Shifting our mindset so that prayer isn't just something we do "when all else fails," but rather our very first line of defense against panic and distress. What it Means to Cultivate: Understanding that just like growing a physical crop, we must actively cultivate our taste for the Word of God and practice turning our worries over to Him daily. The Power of Sincere Supplication: Breaking down the deep meaning of "earnest" prayer—realizing that God doesn't just hear our requests, but actively gives heed to our most sincere, heartfelt cries. The Lost Key Miracle: A lighthearted but profoundly practical testimony from Shelley's own life about losing a copper mailbox key in a bed of brown rocks, and how a quick, fervent prayer brought an immediate answer in under 30 seconds. Featured Bible Passages: Philippians 4:6 — "Be anxious for nothing..." Proverbs 12:25 — How anxiety weighs down the heart and causes depression. Psalm 37:1-3 — Fret not because of evildoers; trust in the Lord and cultivate faithfulness. 1 Thessalonians 5:17 — Pray without ceasing. 1 Peter 5:7 — Casting all your anxiety upon Him because He cares for you. James 5:13 — Is anyone among you afflicted? Let him pray. Psalm 119:170 — Let my supplication come before Thee. Philippians 4:19 — God supplying all your needs according to His riches. Hebrews 4:16 — Drawing near with confidence to the throne of grace. Psalm 28:2, 6 — Blessed be the Lord who hears the voice of our supplications. Psalm 86:6 — Giving ear and heed to the voice of prayer. Connect & Support: Get in Touch: Share your testimonies, submit prayer requests, or contact the ministry by writing to: For Zion's Sake, P.O. Morning lessons: Psalms 37:1-17;1 Samuel 6; 1 Corinthians 14:14_20-40. Fret not yourself because of the ungodly, neither be envious of those who are evildoers.
Ever feel a simmering anger when someone is winning by cheating, lying, or hurting others?David can relate. In Psalms 37–41, David is fed up with watching evil people prosper. He's also physically crushed by his own guilt, questioning whether life even means anything, pulled up out of a pit, and betrayed by someone he trusted completely. These aren't tidy conclusions. They're five raw, in-the-moment prayers from a man who keeps choosing to bring it all back to God.This Psalm 37-41 Bible study covers:[7:17] Psalm 37: Fretting in Hebrew – Why the Hebrew word behind "do not fret" actually means to burn or seethe, and how David teaches us to put that fire out before it consumes us.[13:36] Psalm 38: Crushing Guilt – What it looks like when unconfessed sin becomes a physical, crushing weight, and why trusting doesn't always mean you feel better. Sometimes it just means you give it to God and press on.[15:56] Psalm 39: The Futility of Life – David's honest wrestling with how fleeting life is and why "venting to God" might be the most faithful thing you can do.[21:07] Psalm 40: Rescue from the Pit – Why David's rescue from "the slimy pit" becomes one of the clearest prophetic pictures of Christ in the entire Psalter, and Jesus Himself quotes this psalm.[24:53] Psalm 41: Blessings and Betrayal – God's blessing on those who care for the weak, and the chilling way David's prophetic statements are fulfilled at the Last Supper.Psalms Show Notes:Psalms RoadmapPsalms Prayer ListPsalms Playlist on Apple MusicPsalms Playlist on SpotifyPhil Wickham - Psalm 8 (Hallé) [Official Music Video]ACTS Prayer GuideDiscussion Questions[10:15] David tells us not to fret over people who succeed through wickedness. Where in your life right now are you most tempted to let that slow burn of envy or resentment take hold, and what would it look like to trust God with it instead?[16:35] Psalm 39 asks God to reveal how fleeting life is, yet the psalmist still brings his honest frustration to God rather than burying it. Is there a frustration about the futility of your life or circumstances that you've been holding back from bringing to God?[25:33] Psalm 41 closes the book with a blessing on those who care for the weak, the sick, and the vulnerable. Psalm 37 1 Fret not yourself because of evildoers; be not envious of wrongdoers! 2 For they will soon fade like the grass and wither like the green herb. 3 Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.[b] 4 Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. 5 Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act. 6 He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday. 7 Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices! 8 Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath! Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil. 9 For the evildoers shall be cut off, but those who wait for the Lord shall inherit the land. 10 In just a little while, the wicked will be no more; though you look carefully at his place, he will not be there. 11 But the meek shall inherit the land and delight themselves in abundant peace. 12 The wicked plots against the righteous and gnashes his teeth at him, 13 but the Lord laughs at the wicked, for he sees that his day is coming. 14 The wicked draw the sword and bend their bows to bring down the poor and needy, to slay those whose way is upright; 15 their sword shall enter their own heart, and their bows shall be broken. 16 Better is the little that the righteous has than the abundance of many wicked. 17 For the arms of the wicked shall be broken, but the Lord upholds the righteous. 18 The Lord knows the days of the blameless, and their heritage will remain forever; 19 they are not put to shame in evil times; in the days of famine they have abundance. 20 But the wicked will perish; the enemies of the Lord are like the glory of the pastures; they vanish—like smoke they vanish away. 21 The wicked borrows but does not pay back, but the righteous is generous and gives; 22 for those blessed by the Lord[c] shall inherit the land, but those cursed by him shall be cut off. 23 The steps of a man are established by the Lord, when he delights in his way; 24 though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the Lord upholds his hand. 25 I have been young, and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken or his children begging for bread. 26 He is ever lending generously, and his children become a blessing. 27 Turn away from evil and do good; so shall you dwell forever. 28 For the Lord loves justice; he will not forsake his saints. They are preserved forever, but the children of the wicked shall be cut off. 29 The righteous shall inherit the land and dwell upon it forever. 30 The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom, and his tongue speaks justice. 31 The law of his God is in his heart; his steps do not slip. 32 The wicked watches for the righteous and seeks to put him to death. 33 The Lord will not abandon him to his power or let him be condemned when he is brought to trial. 34 Wait for the Lord and keep his way, and he will exalt you to inherit the land; you will look on when the wicked are cut off. 35 I have seen a wicked, ruthless man, spreading himself like a green laurel tree.[d] 36 But he passed away,[e] and behold, he was no more; though I sought him, he could not be found. 37 Mark the blameless and behold the upright, for there is a future for the man of peace. 38 But transgressors shall be altogether destroyed; the future of the wicked shall be cut off. 39 The salvation of the righteous is from the Lord; he is their stronghold in the time of trouble. 40 The Lord helps them and delivers them; he delivers them from the wicked and saves them, because they take refuge in him.

Sunday evening message from the pulpit of Shawano Baptist Church
"Fret not thyself because of evildoers." The wicked seem to prosper — the money drips off the modern church, the world denies the living God and climbs higher — but their end is to be cut down like the grass and consumed away into smoke. Trust in the LORD, commit thy way unto Him, and wait: it is the meek who inherit the earth.

Send us Fan MailWe're kicking off a series that hasn't been done since 2023 (but is one of Derek's favorites!). Over the next 3 episodes, we are looking at Psalm 37 and it's implication for our lives as believers. As we dive into the first few verses, we see that there are commands for us as Christians to follow. Fret not, delight in the Lord, be still, wait patiently...all of these commands require obedience. But the heart of the obedient one is a heart the Lord blesses. As we journey through verses 1-13, we see Psalm 37 shows the Lord as a protector and that we have a blessed inheritance in Him. Would love to have you join me for these next 3 episodes!
Imagine a seasoned grandfather pulling up a chair beside his restless, frustrated grandchildren — children upset about the apparent success of dishonest people and the seemingly unchecked wrongdoing in the world — and offering them hard-won, life-tested wisdom: don't fret. That is precisely the spirit Lia Girard finds in Psalm 37, written near the end of King David's turbulent life by a man who had seen plenty of evil, committed some of his own, and repeatedly returned to the God who proved faithful through it all. This is not the advice of someone who has lived a sheltered life. It is wisdom forged in the fire of real experience. Psalm 37 was written as an alphabetic acrostic — each stanza beginning with a successive letter of the Hebrew alphabet — designed to be teachable, memorable, and passed down through generations. And its message is as urgent today as it ever was: do not fret when wicked people seem to prosper. Refrain from anger. Wait patiently for God. Because divine justice is coming, in His perfect timing, by His sovereign hand. We are not called to be passive in the face of wrongdoing. We can still love, still serve, still reach out to those in need. But we are called to keep the faith, guard our own spiritual integrity, and trust that the God who sees every atrocity is not indifferent, and that wrath is not ours to wield. Bible Verse "Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes. Refrain from anger, and turn from wrath; do not fret — it leads only to evil." — Psalm 37:7-8, NIV Ponder Today Fretting is not just unpleasant, it is dangerous. Psalm 37 warns that fretting leads only to evil. Unchecked anger over injustice, left to simmer, can pull us away from faith, integrity, and the peace God desires for us. God sees every atrocity and every wicked scheme. Waiting patiently for Him is not the same as believing He is uninvolved. He sees it all, and Psalm 37 promises that the swords the wicked wield against the poor will ultimately pierce their own hearts. David wrote this psalm as a man of deeply imperfect but genuine faith. His wisdom is credible precisely because he earned it through failure, repentance, and watching God come through in the mess. His counsel is not naive. It is seasoned. Stillness and action are not opposites. Being still before the Lord does not mean doing nothing. We can still love, serve, and reach out to those in need, but we do so from a place of trust rather than outrage, faith rather than fear. A Prayer for You Today God, I know You see our world in turmoil. It's hard to tamp down anger when I see wrongdoing seemingly rewarded with power and success. Help me stop the fretting in my heart. Remind me that You have this. Equip and guide me to do good in my own circle of influence, and to refrain from worry and wrath. Give me an overflowing measure of the inner peace only You can provide — and help me stay hopeful, joyful, and merciful in these confusing times. In Your mighty name, Amen. Don't Miss an Episode If today's prayer helped quiet the noise of a confusing world and anchor your heart in God's justice, we'd love to stay connected. Sunday afternoon message from the pulpit of Shawano Baptist Church
Proverbs 24:19–20 warns against agitation, envy, or frustration over the apparent success of wicked people. Though evil may seem to prosper for a season, its future is empty—the lamp of the wicked will ultimately be put out. Wisdom calls believers to stability rather than emotional disturbance when confronted with injustice or temporary worldly success. In today's Morning Manna, Rick Wiles and Doc Burkhart examine why envy of the wicked distorts perspective, how God's justice operates beyond immediate appearances, and why the righteous can remain at peace knowing evil has no lasting future before the Lord. Maybe you were thinking, "oh no I have nothing to do this weekend..." Fret not, for the Interpol saga has entered Nazi territory, and we shall provide that which The History Channel has forgotten to mention for 31 years since 1995. It is the rabbit hole that keeps on giving. All thanks to the patreon, hope you have a fantastic weekend, spring is coming and the first seeds are in the ground, love you. I encourage you to leave comments and share the pod. Support RETURN OF THE REPRESSED HERE Support Ghost Stories for the End of the World HERE Peruse soundtracks for the show HERE
