Around campfires North and South, many of the tunes played and sung during the Civil War were the work of a 35-year-old Pennsylvanian who was America's first full-time professional songwriter.By the time the war started, Stephen Collins Foster — who as a youth taught himself to play the clarinet, guitar, flute and the piano — had published more than 200 songs. His best ones — “Oh Susannah,” “Camptown Races,” “Old Folks at Home (Swanee River),” “My Old Kentucky Home,” “Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair,” “Hard Times Comes Again No More” — already were widely known throughout the country to amateur and professional musicians alike.About “Angelina Baker”This song, though, was not one of the famous ones. Foster wrote “Angelina Baker,” sometimes performed as “Angeline the Baker,” in 1850 for use by the theater world's Christy Minstrels troupe.Today folks know it primarily as an instrumental dance tunes performed by old-time and bluegrass bands, almost always with a lively fiddle leading the way. An early version was recorded for Victor in 1928 by Uncle Eck Dunford of Galax, Va. Meanwhile, West Virginia fiddler Franklin George called it "Angeline" and played it with Scottish overtones.Foster's original, though, was a bit slower and had lyrics that lamented the loss of a woman slave, sent away by her owner.Huntington-born music historian Ken Emerson — who in 1997 wrote a definitive biography called Doo-Dah!: Stephen Foster and the Rise of American Popular Culture — said that “Angelina Baker” entered the American consciousness during a period of great controversy between free and slave states. The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 was among the hotly debated topics at the time of the song's composition, and, Emerson noted, Foster's lyrics obliquely acknowledge these controversies. (Angelina likes th' boys as far as she can see ‘em / She used to run old Massa round to ask him for to free ‘em…. Angelina Baker, Angelina Baker's gone / She left me here to weep a tear and beat on de old jawbone… )Our Take on the TuneThe Flood has always celebrated diversity. The guys often follow a folk blues with a swing tune or chase a 1950s jazz standard with some 1920s jug band stuff. And deep in The Flood's DNA are the fiddle tunes learned from Joe Dobbs and Doug Chaffin. This Civil War-era tune the band learned from fiddlin' Jack Nuckols, their newest band mate. From the Archives: How We Met AngelinaAs reported earlier, Dave Peyton and Charlie Bowen started 50 years ago trying to draw Nuckols into the band. On an April evening back in 1974, Peyton and Bowen trekked over to Jack and Susie's place in South Point, Ohio, for a jam session. It was during that session that they first heard “Angelina Baker.” Here from the fathomless Flood files is that specific archival moment. Click the button below to travel back 51 years and hear Jack on fiddle, Dave on Autoharp and Charlie on guitar:More Instrumentals? Finally, if all this has you wanting some more wordlessness in your Friday Floodery, tune in the Instrumentals channel in the free Radio Floodango music streaming service. There you'll have a randomized playlist of everything from folksy fiddle tunes to sultry jazz numbers without a lyric or vocal in sight! Click here to give a try. This is a public episode. Reasons to Rejoice is a five minute window each day where we lift our eyes to God and revel in who He is! Advent can be a frantic time and often one where it's hard to feel near to God. Why not join with us to celebrate the goodness of God each day for 25 days? We don't want to dismiss the challenges of our world, but we do want to celebrate the King who came to the manger and now sits in glory. Let's dedicate ourselves to rejoicing in Him this Christmas.

Stephen Foster is the leader of St Aldates Church in Oxford, a dynamic and expanding community with a diverse congregation of young adults, students, and families. Stephen holds a law degree from Oxford and a theology degree from Cambridge, reflecting both his academic prowess and spiritual dedication. Before entering full-time ministry, he worked as a barrister in the UK, gaining extensive experience in criminal defense.Episode Summary:Rebecca speaks with Stephen Foster, the leader of St Aldates Church in Oxford, to discuss the intriguing question: Is Jesus believable at Oxford? With Stephen's dynamic background in both law and theology, he offers unique insights on the compatibility of faith with rigorous academic pursuits.Together they explore how the modern world, particularly in academic centers, is experiencing a resurgent curiosity in Christianity, despite running parallel to vastly secular ideologies. They reflect on the increasing spiritual quests among Gen Z, contrasting it with previous generations' post-Christian perspectives. This episode invites listeners to reconsider entrenched notions about faith in the face of evidence that suggests a vibrant interest in exploring Jesus and Christianity.Key Takeaways:Christianity is experiencing a resurgence of interest among young adults, even within elite academic environments like Oxford. There is a noticeable shift from a post-Christian to a pre-Christian context, where people have little knowledge of the gospel yet show deep curiosity. The interaction between faith and academic disciplines, such as theoretical physics, is explored, revealing a surprising harmony and intellectual grounding.Modern societal crises have catalyzed a spiritual openness, with many seeking truth and meaning beyond secular constructs.Spiritual exploration is palpable among younger generations, who are increasingly predisposed to discovering faith in Jesus.Notable Quotes:"In a post-Christian context, people are inoculated with enough of the message of the gospel to immunize them against its power." - Stephen Foster"The gospel is not a virus, but there's a natural virality to the gospel." - Stephen Foster"We desperately need to have truth, and if you don't, you have no defense against power grabs." - Stephen FosterResources:Follow Stephen on InstagramSign up for weekly emails at RebeccaMcLaughlin.org/SubscribeFollow Confronting Christianity:Instagram | XPurchase Rebecca's Books:Confronting Christianity: 12 Hard Questions for the World's Largest ReligionDoes the Bible Affirm Same-Sex Relationships?: Examining 10 Claims about Scripture and Sexuality10 Questions Every Teen Should Ask (and Answer) about ChristianityJesus though the Eyes of Women: How the First Female Disciples Help Us Know and Love the LordNo Greater Love: A Biblical Vision for FriendshipConfronting Jesus: 9 Encounters with the Hero of the GospelsAmazon affiliate links are used where appropriate. In this episode, Paul Fess (LaGuardia Community College) explores the connections between Martin Delany and the songwriters Joshua McCarter Simpson and Stephen Foster. Embedded in the mix of Delany's novel Blake; or, The Huts of America are several songs that invoke some of Foster's most familiar melodies, such as those associated with the songs “Oh! Susanna” and “Uncle Ned.” Digging through the archive, scholars have discovered these parodies to be the work of the relatively obscure Joshua McCarter Simpson, an activist in Ohio's Colored Conventions movement, a conductor on the underground railroad, and, with the publication of his Original Anti-Slavery Songs, the first African American to produce a songbook of original compositions. This episode examines how Delany and Simpson strategically repurpose Foster's sentimentalism-infused melodies, navigating the racial complexities of antebellum culture. While Foster aimed to soften the degrading aspects of minstrelsy, Delany and Simpson use these melodies to create a Black abolitionist discourse, challenging sentimental aesthetics. The novel's characters, like Simpson's lyrics, redefine the nostalgic longing in Foster's songs, emphasizing the harsh realities of enslaved life. Delany and Simpson employ music as a tool for political activism, crafting a counterhegemonic discourse and fostering a sense of collective resistance against enslavement. Out of the Nowhere. Into the Here is the sublime second album by singer, songwriter, and performer Stephen Bluhm. It'll be available as both a vocal version and a companion all- instrumental set. Recorded, mixed, and produced by Bluhm and featuring a host of gifted guest musicians, the orchestral opus is an elaborate aural feast of strings, horns, flutes, piano, reed instruments, and other timelessly evocative musical sounds — ambitious, but intimate and confiding as well. Out of the Nowhere. Into the Here is being released on 12” LP vinyl, CD, digital download, streaming platforms and 2xCD set including both vocal and instrumental versions on April 19. The instrumental version is being released separately on the same date on digital download and streaming platforms. While Bluhm has been “making songs ever since I can remember,” in his teenage years it was his older siblings' Lou Reed and David Bowie records that ignited his adolescent musical obsession. While attending Temple University, he took the plunge into live music via campus open-mic nights and from there burst upon the bustling Philadelphia scene, prompting the Philadelphia City Paper to dub him “an old soul, writing Tin Pan Alley-ish fare and singing croon-y folk jazz  in a voice that'd make Morrisey swoon.” Relocating to New York's Hudson Valley, he further honed his expressive performing style: Belying the serious slants of some of his songs, Bluhm's shows often find him dancing madly among delighted audience members. “The music (and Stephen) is utterly charming,” raves famed musical theater actor and composer Tom Judson, one of Bluhm's avowed fans, about Out of the Nowhere. Into the Here. “The halting, clipped vocals, with a sudden appearance of sumptuous string writing, are unexpected and elegant. The music, at first blush, appears naïve. But on a close listen, it's very assured, and complex writing. And the arrangements are really just wonderful. Sufjan Stevens meets Kurt Weill meets Stephen Foster.” “As I put these songs and arrangements together for the album, I became more and more confident in them,” says Bluhm. “I just hope people sense the beauty in them, the genuineness that I put into them.” With one listen to Out of the Nowhere. Into the Here, no doubt people will sense exactly that. Stephen Foster was America's first great published musician. He wrote some of America's great folk songs, including “Oh, Suzanna,” “Camptown Races” and “Hard Times Come Again No More,” and his music was the inspiration for Paul Green's play “The Stephen Foster Story,” which is performed every summer in Bardstown, Kentucky. In this episode we speak with two of the artists involved in that play- Donna Phillips and Johnny Warren- as well as My Kentucky Old Kentucky Home State Park Mansion Supervisor, Richard Blanton, to learn more about Foster's life, their work in preserving his memory, and how it all can help us understand our past.   If you're traveling through Kentucky, make sure to check out dates for “The Stephen Foster Story” and visit My Old Kentucky Home Mansion!   This episode was edited by Gary Fletcher.

“The church goes upward in age and inward in focus naturally…It's only intentionally that the church goes downward in age and outward in focus.” Meet Stephen Foster, leader of St Aldates Church in Oxford and advisor to Alpha. Stephen brings a refreshing reminder of the need for churches to embrace a vision that moves the demographic downward in age while outward in focus - all while embracing multiple generations in church culture. Listen for insights in today's episode on how to best engage what Stephen describes as a pre-Christian context and why that is so exciting for the Church! The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Dr. Emily Bingham. A prizewinning author of three books who lives and teaches in Louisville, Kentucky, Dr. Bingham is a historian by trade and profession. She also classifies herself as a "privileged White Woman." During our current book study of Brazil, Gus was struck by references to the KKK, lynching, and the 19th century minstrel song "My Old Kentucky Home." The global appeal of this White Supremacist hymn led Gus to Dr. Bingham's 2022 publication, My Old Kentucky Home: The Astonishing Life and Reckoning of an Iconic American Song. The book details how Stephen Foster's minstrel jam spawned a tax-payer-funded public monument, became the Kentucky State anthem, and theme song of Churchill Down's Kentucky Derby. Even after Breonna Taylor was gunned down in her own Kentucky Home in March of 2020, Whites remained dedicated to their sacrosanct tune about gay darkies being sold down the river. We'll ask Dr. Bingham about her use of the terms: "spadework," "militant," and "progressive." The term "White Supremacy" is in her book 20 times. Meanwhile, the term "progress" is in the book 47 times! We also chatted about Bingham's own White Terrorist relatives who are still revered at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Gus made a primary point of two major omissions from Dr. Bingham's work: the University of Kentucky's dedicated White Supremacist Adolph Rupp & the 1919 White Terrorist purge of black residents from Corbin, Kentucky - home of Kentucky Fried Chicken. These "erasures" are common, deliberate acts of Racism. #LouisvilleLip #OldBlackJoe #TheCOWS14Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#
