Abril de 2023 ha sido el mes más cálido y seco desde que hay registros. Los pantanos españoles guardan menos de la mitad del agua que son capaces de almacenar. En las últimas décadas del siglo XVI el poder hispánico pareció al alcanzar su cenit: las tropas del rey de España eran recibidas como libertadoras en París mientras una parte de la población en las islas británicas, en Extremo Oriente, en el Mediterráneo y en los Balcanes, dominados por los turcos, esperaba que sus tercios y armadas les socorrieran contra sus rivales políticos. Los protagonistas de ese momento histórico fueron tanto los súbditos del rey de España como los agentes políticos que, en todos esos territorios, se reclamaban sus aliados. No se puede entender la influencia planetaria del rey católico sin indagar qué esperaban ellos de la intervención de las fuerzas de Felipe II y Felipe III, cuál creían que sería su asociación con tan poderosos monarcas y cómo esta realmente se desarrolló. El análisis de qué es la hegemonía política, de cómo se construye y de cómo fracasa, excede así los límites de una historia que, anclada en debates recurrentes, no tiene en cuenta a todos esos actores, sus sueños, esperanzas, ilusiones y frustraciones. Por lo tanto, para el historiador es preciso aventurarse y visitar nuevos escenarios, metodológicos y geográficos, y buscar en ellos cómo un poder tan en apariencia inmenso se construyó al sumar en sí, o en su representación casi fantasmal, propuestas políticas, conflictos sociales, afanes espirituales, visiones del mundo y percepciones de la urgencia del momento que, en principio, le eran ajenos y que siempre resultaron plurales, diversos y contradictorios. Fue su confluencia la que dio lugar a un instante histórico, a un nudo temporal, a un momento que tuvo características propias, al tiempo de la hispanofilia. En el tiempo histórico de la hegemonía española se pudieron imaginar nuevos horizontes y reclamar el derecho a construirlos. Fue entonces cuando pareció que lo imposible dejaba de serlo y lo impensable se hacía realidad, y cuando se soñó con una política de expansión en casi todos los frentes, en todos los continentes. Para la Monarquía y sus aliados el despertar fue muy amargo, pues en apenas unos años las posibilidades de lograr la victoria se vinieron abajo y pronto el rey católico desistió de su empeño en apoyar activamente a rebeldes que decían luchar por Dios y hablar por el pueblo. La enorme tensión que habían traído guerras civiles, rebeliones y resistencias marcó decisivamente a los territorios donde había sido llamado el auxilio hispanoluso. Los vencedores (en Inglaterra, Francia, Escocia, los Países Bajos, Ceilán…) se apoyaron en el rechazo a las formas de universalismo que lo habían justificado y lograron sepultar a sus rivales, estigmatizados como traidores, en los silencios de la historia oficial. La Monarquía quedó agotada en sus recursos, pero recibió, desde los cuatro puntos cardinales, un flujo de exiliados que la convirtieron en patria de asilo. Rebeldes ayer, refugiados ahora, estos radicales identificaron sus ideales políticos con el rey de España y, de este modo, desbordaron los límites y las fronteras tradicionales de la teoría y de la práctica política. Herencias contradictorias fueron las de vencedores y vencidos, sin embargo, estas no se pueden entender sin conocer su origen común, sin comprender el tiempo de la hispanofilia.
