There is so much that needs to change so much about the way we approach this discussion in the clinical setting. Sometimes it doesn't happen at all and often times it is brief, inaccurate, and instills fear in the people who are trying to get moving or who want to stay moving. My guest today is Rachel Mast. She is a Certified Professional Midwife at the New Beginnings Birthing Center in Meridian, Idaho. Rachel is a gymnast, a crossfitter, and also does jujitsu- Competitively! She is a CFL2 and a P&PA coach herself. Jessica in her own words: I am a British non-fiction writer living on a hillside in North Wales, where I write with candour (and, hopefully, a dash of humour) about improbable things; UFOs, the United Nations' use of clowns to resolve conflict, and, most recently, the rigours of childbearing. I grew up in Shropshire and, at first, dabbled with sports and adventure writing — I played international lacrosse, was one of the fastest unaffiliated runners in the 2011 London Marathon, and once cycled 5,000 miles across sub-Saharan Africa. My career in journalism began as a reporter for the London Evening Standard's gossip column, although I was not good at it, rarely knowing who anyone was. I moved to foreign affairs in East Africa. There, I notched up datelines (often in a flak jacket, this time) from across the continent, Bissau to Burundi, Congo to Madagascar, and met my future husband, a photojournalist, whilst covering the civil war in Somalia. Within five years, I'd won a number of prestigious awards for my investigative features, including a Frontline Club Award, and was a regular contributor to the Guardian, TIME and Newsweek, for whom I wrote about topics including Islamic militancy, piracy, sexual violence and human trafficking. In 2016, pining for the British countryside, I moved with my husband to Llangollen in North Wales, a decision made in part because it had the tightest contour lines we could find within an hour's drive of a decent airport. I am now a mother to two small boys, and spent much of their formative years writing a book about motherhood – the postnatal period, to be precise – and submerging myself in the icy waters of the river Dee, which courses through the valley below our house. Jessica's first book - AFTER BIRTH: What nobody tells you – How to Recover Body and Mind and is available in all good book shops. Fulfilling this vital need, After Birth is the ultimate postnatal primer for women facing changes to their bodies after having a baby. Addressing issues great and small - from hair loss and stretch marks, to bladder and bowel leaks, painful sex, diastasis recti and mental health - researcher and writer Jessica Hatcher-Moore brings together straight-talking advice on preparation for childbirth, healing, and recovery in the weeks, months and even years that follow. She also offers insights for partners, whose role is often overlooked at this critical time. Blending knowledge from the full spectrum of modern and traditional therapies with honest experiences from mothers, here is balanced advice with no agenda. Taking a broad look at what we can do for ourselves at home, and also when to seek expert help, After Birth will reassure, inform and empower women to reclaim their post-birth bodies.
In this episode, Antony Lo - aka The Physio Detective - talk about Avoiding The "Guru-Trap" in fitness, & Increasing Trust In Yourself. Basically, ways to approach "being an expert" or "seeking expertise" in a more grounded, lower pressure way. Fear of getting it wrong, or the pressure to get it all right are ruining fitness for both fitness trainers and fitness enthusiasts alike. Many of whom are trapped in black and white thinking, seeking "the right way" to do things, best way to move etc, which is often compounded by a top-down "doctor knows best" attitude from the fitness world. Let's stop it. Instead, use principles (and a big picture) to guide, not recipes and dogma to follow to the T. Empowering Postpartum Pilates Practice, with Antony LoRenowned Physiotherapist Antony Lo Joins Us On This Episode Of Pilates Elephants To Dive Into Postpartum Pilates And How He Helps Movement Professionals Understand The Research And Practical Principles Of Working With Postpartum Women So They Can Confidently Support Their Clients. We Zoom In On The Importance Of Mindset And How We Can Give Students The Information That They Need, And Empower Them To Make Decisions For Themselves. Our Discussion Also Covers Antony's Experience With Diastasis Rectus, His Philosophy On Pushing Exercise Boundaries And Keeping Clients Safe. What You Will Learn:Antony's interest in postpartum Pilates and how he helps fitness professionals to safely support clients The biggest myths and misconceptions that people commonly sort of hold onto in the area of postpartum Pilates exercise Why you should be a knowledgeable exercise consultant rather than an all-knowing guru How to guide students to self-efficacy and the ability to decide what goes on in their life Why we shouldn't disempower postpartum clients and instead teach them to find their boundaries Postpartum Pilates: Empowering Personal DecisionsAntony Lo joins us on the podcast to share how he helps health and fitness professionals to understand the evidence and principles to move forward with confidence in supporting their students. He explains why his philosophy is trying to break down the hierarchy that assumes that a movement professional has all the answers, and concentrates more on giving people the information that they need and empowering them to make decisions for themselves around postpartum Pilates. Goal-Based Motivation We dive into why goal-based motivation helps people to move forward and why it can take a mindset shift for Pilates instructors to let go of their anxiety around treating postpartum women. When you start to see women as strong, resilient, and capable instead of weak and fragile then it's simple to understand why a diastasis recti doesn't spell the end of exercising. Empowering women to move at their own pace and to listen to their bodies helps you support their postpartum Pilates journey confidently. Experience Before Knowledge Experience before knowledge is one of Antony's mantras and his teaching focuses on trying to give people an experience before we start dropping knowledge on them. We zoom in on confirmation bias and how preloading students with research can color the interaction as they unconsciously tell what you want to hear rather than their true experience. After all, as a Pilates teacher, we should be a trusted consultant. Not a guru, but a guide. The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast 171: Pelvic Health & Movement Goals with Antony Lo Description: When people are experiencing pelvic health issues, they may be told to give up exercise or that certain movements are not appropriate or suitable for them to do. However, exercise may be important to clients beyond pelvic health issues, and there may be social and emotional impacts that restricting access to their usual exercise regime might have. This episode features a section of the interview with guest expert for the Pelvic Health Professionals membership site, Anthony Lo, which explores this topic. Antony Lo is a physiotherapist from Australia who runs The Physio Detective, and has been in practice for over 21 years. Pelvic health and movement and exercise are the focus of this episode. Anthony shares his approach to treating clients with pelvic health issues who want to get back into movement and exercise, as well as how he helps people he's working 1:1 with as a physiotherapist. He also has some tips to help clients make necessary changes, and how we can empower them to continue their exercises outside their sessions with us. Shannon and Anthony also discuss why it's important to have the connections to refer clients to the right professionals who can help them in a more specific and personalized way. * This episode features a section of an interview from the Pelvic Health Professionals Membership site. If you would like access to the full interview, doors are open from now till June 12 2020 for the membership site where you can access this interview and others with other guest experts. In this incredibly practical episode, we interview Teresa Waser and ask her for her top tips for helping female athletes. Teresa is an Orthopaedic and Pelvic Health physiotherapist, operating within a non-traditional model. She works at RX Physiotherapy, her clinic located within a CrossFit gym in Leduc, Alberta, Canada where she has also coached running clinics and CrossFit, particularly in older adults. She also has a special interest in pregnant and postpartum athletes. When not in the clinic, she acts as Senior Teaching Assistant for Antony Lo's The Female Athlete course, in addition to teaching her own seminars independently. Teresa shares her journey within physiotherapy and her frustrations along the way as her beliefs were being challenged. She talks about when she discovered pain science and how her thought process changed after doing the Female Athlete Course and The Masterclass Program - Peak Simplicity - with Antony Lo. Teresa then goes on to outline her acronym TIIPPSS- FC that she developed to help give course participants, and later all health and fitness professionals, a framework to think about what aspects of the person's presentation they could change. T= tension to task (global and local) I = Impact (eg with the body or with equipment) I = Irritability (incl irritants of the pelvic organs or symptom irritability) P = Posture and Position (ie static and dynamic) P = Pressure (ie IAP. Modified by breathing, muscle contraction etc) S = Strategy (eg technique, scaling) S = Sensitivity (central and local. Consider sleep, stress, beliefs, attitudes etc) F = Fatigue (is the person experiencing symptoms at the end of a session?) C = Capacity (ie SAID principles) Teresa then gives examples of how these principles can be applied to clients. A client who has some mild low back pain with deadlifting. A client who has some leaking with running. Nathalia and I are here for you!About Nathalia: Hi there…Nathalia here! Thanks for stopping by and reading this bio to learn a little bit about me. I promise I will try my best to not make this a long and dreary bio full of information you probably don’t care to know. HahahaI started training at a very young age, and I’ve always been passionate about everything related to staying fit and healthy. That passion has landed me several magazine/newspapers covers and articles like for: Cosmopolitan, Muscle and Fitness Hers, Oxygen, Fitness RX, Muscular Development, The Daily Mail, to name a few. Therefore, the commitment and discipline to my fitness regiment has also won me big awards like the prestigious Olympia competition, where I took the first place trophy in the Bikini division. It is fair to say that for most of my life, I had a good grip on my training regimen…until I found out I was pregnant.Learning to adapt my training during and after pregnancy was overwhelming, so I dove into countless articles, books, and research papers about training and nutrition. Ultimately, I decided to further my education and become a Pre and Postnatal Certified Trainer, to help me refine my understanding of how the body changes during these stages of women’s lives. As a mother of two and someone who is incredibly devoted to this lifestyle not only for our bodies, but also for our minds, I have made it my personal mission to empower and help women to live a fitter and healthier lifestyle in ALL stages of their life!Connect with Nathalia:nathaliamelofit.cominstagram.com/Nathaliamelofitfacebook.com/NathaliaMeloFit

Join Christy and I for the second half of our interview we talk cross fit, healing, SI rotations post op and learning resilience. As we rejoin the conversation Christy and I talk about how her perception of all of her diagnosis, EDS, cam Impingement, labral tear, and a fused SIJ lead her to believe that cross fit *might* not be the best choice for her. After contemplation of some new information and a few continuing education classes, Christy gives cross-fit a try. She talks about how her diagnosis of EDS & persisting pain lead her to feel fragile. Once she gave cross fit a try she felt something different and started to find her resilience and her inner strength. She adds, she doesn't feel like she was *lucky* in getting better, she believes ANYONE in pain can improve.
