Survival Guide is, for all intents and purposes, Emily Whitehurst. What began as collaboration evolved into a solo act. For the project's fourth album, deathdreams, the musician has continued to push her limits, playing nearly every instrument on its 11 tracks. Whitehurst has had plenty of collaborative projects over the years, including her stint in punk band, Tsunami Bomb and the follow up group, The Action Design. But sometimes the purest form of expression requires an artist to take things into their own hands. Transcript available here. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Emily WhitehurstTake a walk with me down Fascination Street, as I get to know Emily Whitehurst. Emily first gained recognition in the pop punk bands Generic Asphalt, and Plinky; before gaining world wide acclaim as the front woman for Tsunami Bomb, and later The Action Design. In this episode, we chat about her getting into music at a very young age, how she came to be involved in each of those bands, and some stories from the road. She also explains what it was like to play a ridiculous number of Van's Warped Tour shows. We also touch on why she moved to San Antonio, Texas, and how that opened the door for her to have her very first Christmas tree as an adult! Then we get into her newest band, Survival Guide, and her new album Death Dreams. I love this album; so we talk about a good bit of it. She explains why she used some household items as instruments on some songs, which songs are actually about death dreams, and she lets me play my favorite track from the album. Plus, she talks about teaming up with a San Antonio country band, to play some shows, and release a song together! Check out Death Dreams, available everywhere, and follow her to see where she tours next! This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/4068452/advertisement

Today's guest makes me not want to dream. So maybe it's fitting that this is released on Halloween. Welcome Emily Whitehurst of Survival Guide to the podcast. And throughout this episode, it's clear that her band is aptly named. From her start with the bands Plinky and Tsunami Bomb, she's always had a part in writing lyrics and melodies. And it served her well as Tsunami Bomb played on Warped Tours and had some pretty great opening slots. But with her next band, The Action Design, Emily expanded her musical palette and the music just got better. Again, she scored some great opening slots with bands like Social Distortion and earned a bunch of new fans. When The Action Design ended, she and her bassist decided they wanted to keep writing music. So they forged on as Survival Guide, expanding the music even more. But when the other half of the musical duo left, Emily took a hard look at the band and made the decision to continue on. She kind of had to. You can't dissolve a band called Survival Guide! Her first full length as a solo project is called deathdreams because that's what some of the songs are about, dreams where Emily died! She has obviously changed how she writes now that Survival Guide is just Emily, and it my favorite release in her catalog. The music is varied and well written and sometimes spooky. Pick up deathdreams at srvvlgd.com or wherever you buy music. Follow her @srvvlgd on X, @survivalguidemusic on Instagram and Twitch. Check out her Patreon page. We had the pleasure of interviewing Emily Whitehurst of Survival Guide and Tsunami Bomb over Zoom video!“Music is crucial to my survival!” said Emily Whitehurst. “Survival Guide is one woman trying to shape her own place in this world as a musician.”An electronic indie-pop artist with a background in punk, Emily is the solo force behind Survival Guide. Her danceable tunes evoke a sonic birthday cake: alternating layers of Depeche Mode, Metric, Peter Gabriel, and Grimes, with vibrant melodies and vocals the icing on top.A California native now residing in Texas, Emily's music obsession began with Green Day, leading her to a dreams-come-true life of punk rock as she traversed continents fronting the band Tsunami Bomb as “Agent M.” Over the years, her music gradually shifted toward synth pop in The Action Design, then further into the electronic indie-pop realm as Survival Guide.Originally a duo, Survival Guide's first album, Way To Go, – dubbed “passion behind an electronic soul” by New Noise Magazine – was released in 2015. It was around this time when Survival Guide slowly, amicably yet painfully became a solo act, leaving Whitehurst unsure of what to do next. Never having written or performed music alone, she considered everything from starting a new band to quitting music altogether. After a major geographical shift, an acoustic album, and some solo touring, she's finally ready to return as a solo Survival Guide. The newly released, alter-ego Survival Guide debuted in January with RHV1.5 (short for Request Hotline, Vol. 1.5): featuring two intriguing dance-party reimaginings of AFI's “Totalimmortal” and “Girl's Not Grey on Side A alongside two contemplative Misfits piano-serenade covers (“Skulls” and “Hybrid Moments”) on Side B.With only 500 copies pressed on randomly colored vinyl, RHV1.5 is also a taster for the 11-track, digital-only Request Hotline, Vol. 2, featuring all songs from the 7” plus an eclectic array of further punk covers from Green Day, Runaways, Avril Lavigne, Distillers, Tony Sly, Sleater-Kinney, and Maybe Tomorrow, each with its own bold and unique Survival Guide treatment. We want to hear from you! Tsunami Bomb, the punk-rock band from Petaluma, California formed in 1998 by bassist Dominic Davi, with keyboardist/vocalist Oobliette Sparks and later joined by drummer Gabe Lindeman. With lead-vocalist Emily Whitehurst aka "Agent M" they would become a staple of Warped Tour and toured throughout the United States, Europe, and Japan. After going through a number of lineup changes they separated in 2005. In 2015 the band reformed with new vocalist Kate Jacobi and new guitarist Andy Pohl. On Episode 3 “The Red Hoodie” we spoke with Tsunami Bomb’s bassist, Dominic Davi where he shared some interesting stories and behind the scene facts that any Tsunami Bomb fan would enjoy. He also shares a bone chilling and heartfelt ghost encounter that he and the whole band experienced while on tour that left them totally speechless. Dominic then shares about a Paranormal Investigation where he joined Amy Bruni, a Professional Paranormal Investigator and Executive Producer of the TV show “Kindred Spirits," along with members of Sci-Fi channels “Ghost Hunters." The Investigation took place at the Phoenix Theater in Petaluma California; a building that has been in existence since 1905. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/hazychaos/support
