"And the man on the cuts! Twice as nice with the slice...his name ain't Tommy...but he's my boy!"Yes, that's right. A little apropos-of-nothing (Chicago's own) Liquid Soul quote to celebrate the fact that Dylan Johnson joined me for Episode No. 149.Very pleased that Dylan joined me for this conversation, and I feel it's important to let you know that his stuff is as follows: dylanjohnsonlive.com; humbledpride.com;, and dylan_johnson_music on Instagram. You can find stuff to listen to on Spotify, Apple, YouTube, Amazon, Pandora, and Deezer, and -- while you're pokin' around -- make sure to give 2022's Suburbs a listen.I really enjoyed getting to chat with Dylan. We talked a little bit about family and growing up, being part of a band that's been both together and homeboys for decades, and we also talked about the process of writing, recording, and producing an album. Not lost in the mix was a little segment about a few of Dylan's favorite albums, which were these:Van Morrison's Astral Weeks (1968)August & Everything After (1992), Counting CrowsBen Folds Five's self-titled (1995)Rain or Shine (2010), O.A.R.Lana Del Ray's Norman Fucking Rockwell! (2019)Talking with Dylan was educational and entertaining. He seems to have that "it" button, and I wish him nothing but the best with both his current and future projects. If you're in KC, I think you can catch him at The Pour House Friday evenings. Check him out.Thank you to Dylan for his time, and thank you to all of you that support the show.Cheers.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the audio samples contained within this episode. They are samples taken from a Widespread Panic single from this year (!) called, "Blue Carousel" c/o Widespread Records. I mean, I have always loved me some Widespread, and -- while this tune's riff sounds a lot like the initial heartbeat of "Greta," I had to tag it and show them some love.
Melissa Weikart is a French American singer songwriter currently based on Strasburg. Her third and newest EP, Easy, (out January 17th) is a sonic and production expansion on her previous work. Melissa shares her experience “growing up French” in Boston, why she appreciates her U.S. music education and how a teacher encouraged her to establish her own voice and process that gave her a musical identity at a young age. We learn why a collaborative project recomposing Pet Sounds explores the gendered nature of genius, how an accidental recording became the new single, and why Wendy Eisenburg and Lana Del Ray influenced the new recordings. Melissa tells us how she was tricked into exposing here lack of pop culture knowledge as a kid, Joe learns why Strasburg in the “Christmas Capitol” and we hear two new songs from Easy. Today on Too Opinionated we sit down with LA's rising R&B/Soul star Nicollette. Nicollette's soulful voice harks back to the days of the great women that inspire her such as Billie Holiday and Nina Simone. Nicollette's soothing style finds its home next to Sade, Amy Winehouse and Lana Del Ray. Nicollette released her velvety smooth Neo soul single “Broken" on Friday April 12th. “Broken” is the lead single from Nicollette's forthcoming album release slated for Friday August 16th. Nicollette has been surrounded by music her entire life. Both of her parents are singers; her dad was the lead singer in a hard rock band and her mom sang back up for various bands. Exposed to hard rock and metal from dad and Soul, R&B, Classical, and Funk from mom, Nicollette had a diverse musical experience growing up. Meanwhile, with her mom and grandmother, she was steeped in classic, black and white films, and period pieces. It was watching these films that led to Nicollette's discovery of some of the artists that influenced her musical development. Through musicals and singing in choir while in school, Nicollette began developing her voice by pursuing singing professionally after high school. It was then that the writing for her debut album began. Over the next few years Nicollette's "voice" and brand developed. Today she is working on her sophomore album and continuing to evolve and develop as an artist.

We're back after the biggest night in music. (0:00) If you subscribe to our Patreon you were able to livestream the awards with us and hear us react in real time (shoutout to everyone that joined). Before we get to the awards Rory shares some groundbreaking news regarding his family lineage. First we cover Jay Z's speech which lends itself to a conversation about the agenda the award show may be pushing and why some artists continue to win over others (07:23) . Then we get into the winners themselves and go over the right decision & the snubs. In more scandalous Grammy news Killer Mike was arrested, Taylor Swift ignored Celine Dion and dragged Lana Del Ray on stage to watch her win. The biggest loser of the weekend may have been Adin Ross (47:39) . First, 21 Savage tried to scam him then Playboi Carti allegedly ran off with $2 million. Meanwhile, Drake is back on tour and seemingly takes a shot at Rihanna (1:01:50). Will Asap Rocky step to him? This leads us to thinking about the best “crash outs” in history (1:09:00) . Then Mal thinks this song is going to be a classic. (1:21:05). Speaking of classics, Bieber is back to harmonizing and we recall our favorite song of his. (1:28:55) It's time for voicemails. (1:41:04). Mal gives some wild advice. We learn a lot about Rory's future plans (1:50:00) . We close with prayers to one of our adult industry legends (1:57:48), the world's largest crayon, Usher in Skimms, and the Knicks. Tune in as the guys discuss all of this + more!Opening song: 'Work' - Rihanna feat. Emily WhitehurstTake a walk with me down Fascination Street, as I get to know Emily Whitehurst. Emily first gained recognition in the pop punk bands Generic Asphalt, and Plinky; before gaining world wide acclaim as the front woman for Tsunami Bomb, and later The Action Design. In this episode, we chat about her getting into music at a very young age, how she came to be involved in each of those bands, and some stories from the road. She also explains what it was like to play a ridiculous number of Van's Warped Tour shows. We also touch on why she moved to San Antonio, Texas, and how that opened the door for her to have her very first Christmas tree as an adult! Then we get into her newest band, Survival Guide, and her new album Death Dreams. I love this album; so we talk about a good bit of it. She explains why she used some household items as instruments on some songs, which songs are actually about death dreams, and she lets me play my favorite track from the album. Plus, she talks about teaming up with a San Antonio country band, to play some shows, and release a song together! Check out Death Dreams, available everywhere, and follow her to see where she tours next! This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/4068452/advertisement
