We had a great time chatting about the bands newest music, their plans for 2025 and so much more. That being said we hope you enjoy our conversation as much as we did.

Survival Guide is, for all intents and purposes, Emily Whitehurst. What began as collaboration evolved into a solo act. For the project's fourth album, deathdreams, the musician has continued to push her limits, playing nearly every instrument on its 11 tracks. Whitehurst has had plenty of collaborative projects over the years, including her stint in punk band, Tsunami Bomb and the follow up group, The Action Design. But sometimes the purest form of expression requires an artist to take things into their own hands. Transcript available here. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Emily WhitehurstTake a walk with me down Fascination Street, as I get to know Emily Whitehurst. Emily first gained recognition in the pop punk bands Generic Asphalt, and Plinky; before gaining world wide acclaim as the front woman for Tsunami Bomb, and later The Action Design. In this episode, we chat about her getting into music at a very young age, how she came to be involved in each of those bands, and some stories from the road. She also explains what it was like to play a ridiculous number of Van's Warped Tour shows. We also touch on why she moved to San Antonio, Texas, and how that opened the door for her to have her very first Christmas tree as an adult! Then we get into her newest band, Survival Guide, and her new album Death Dreams. I love this album; so we talk about a good bit of it. She explains why she used some household items as instruments on some songs, which songs are actually about death dreams, and she lets me play my favorite track from the album. Plus, she talks about teaming up with a San Antonio country band, to play some shows, and release a song together! Check out Death Dreams, available everywhere, and follow her to see where she tours next! This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/4068452/advertisement

Today's guest makes me not want to dream. So maybe it's fitting that this is released on Halloween. Welcome Emily Whitehurst of Survival Guide to the podcast. And throughout this episode, it's clear that her band is aptly named. From her start with the bands Plinky and Tsunami Bomb, she's always had a part in writing lyrics and melodies. And it served her well as Tsunami Bomb played on Warped Tours and had some pretty great opening slots. But with her next band, The Action Design, Emily expanded her musical palette and the music just got better. Again, she scored some great opening slots with bands like Social Distortion and earned a bunch of new fans. When The Action Design ended, she and her bassist decided they wanted to keep writing music. So they forged on as Survival Guide, expanding the music even more. But when the other half of the musical duo left, Emily took a hard look at the band and made the decision to continue on. She kind of had to. You can't dissolve a band called Survival Guide! Her first full length as a solo project is called deathdreams because that's what some of the songs are about, dreams where Emily died! She has obviously changed how she writes now that Survival Guide is just Emily, and it my favorite release in her catalog. The music is varied and well written and sometimes spooky. Pick up deathdreams at srvvlgd.com or wherever you buy music. Follow her @srvvlgd on X, @survivalguidemusic on Instagram and Twitch. Check out her Patreon page. From the suburbs of East Los Angeles, CA, four Mexican American kids came together in 2001 to form the band Audio Karate. Audio Karate developed a unique sound that drew from their many influences such as Descendents and Jawbreaker. Their unique mix of melodic and emotional punk rock helped them develop a big fan base and quickly caught the attention of Kung Fu records, who signed them in 2001 alongside bands like Blink-182 and Tsunami Bomb. Audio Karate were far from being just another “punk” band, and their blend of melodies and hooks set them apart, making it difficult to place them in any one genre. The band has mastered the art of writing infectiously catchy songs with deeply personal lyrics, while still remaining upbeat and fun. Thanks for listening!!! We had the pleasure of interviewing Emily Whitehurst of Survival Guide and Tsunami Bomb over Zoom video!“Music is crucial to my survival!” said Emily Whitehurst. “Survival Guide is one woman trying to shape her own place in this world as a musician.”An electronic indie-pop artist with a background in punk, Emily is the solo force behind Survival Guide. Her danceable tunes evoke a sonic birthday cake: alternating layers of Depeche Mode, Metric, Peter Gabriel, and Grimes, with vibrant melodies and vocals the icing on top.A California native now residing in Texas, Emily's music obsession began with Green Day, leading her to a dreams-come-true life of punk rock as she traversed continents fronting the band Tsunami Bomb as “Agent M.” Over the years, her music gradually shifted toward synth pop in The Action Design, then further into the electronic indie-pop realm as Survival Guide.Originally a duo, Survival Guide's first album, Way To Go, – dubbed “passion behind an electronic soul” by New Noise Magazine – was released in 2015. It was around this time when Survival Guide slowly, amicably yet painfully became a solo act, leaving Whitehurst unsure of what to do next. Never having written or performed music alone, she considered everything from starting a new band to quitting music altogether. After a major geographical shift, an acoustic album, and some solo touring, she's finally ready to return as a solo Survival Guide. The newly released, alter-ego Survival Guide debuted in January with RHV1.5 (short for Request Hotline, Vol. 1.5): featuring two intriguing dance-party reimaginings of AFI's “Totalimmortal” and “Girl's Not Grey on Side A alongside two contemplative Misfits piano-serenade covers (“Skulls” and “Hybrid Moments”) on Side B.With only 500 copies pressed on randomly colored vinyl, RHV1.5 is also a taster for the 11-track, digital-only Request Hotline, Vol. 2, featuring all songs from the 7” plus an eclectic array of further punk covers from Green Day, Runaways, Avril Lavigne, Distillers, Tony Sly, Sleater-Kinney, and Maybe Tomorrow, each with its own bold and unique Survival Guide treatment. We want to hear from you! From the suburbs of East LA, four Mexican American kids came together in 2001 to form the band Audio Karate and developed a unique sound that drew from their many influences such as Descendents and Jawbreaker. Their unique mix of melodic and emotional punk rock helped them develop a big fan base and quickly caught the attention of Kung Fu Records, who signed them in 2001 alongside bands like Blink-182 and Tsunami Bomb. Their blend of melodies and hooks set them apart, making it difficult to place them in any one genre. The band has mastered the art of writing infectiously catchy songs with deeply personal lyrics, while still remaining upbeat and fun.  They recently signed to Iodine Recordings and will be releasing a new LP this January called ¡OTRA! that features rare and unreleased music spanning the band's career, produced by Bill Stevenson of the Descendents and Trever Keith of Face to Face.  Audio Karate are also working on new music that will be released on Iodine later in 2022, and the band is gearing up for some music festivals and regional tours.  Thank you Casey Iodine for the intro to Jason whom I got on the Skype and this is what we chat about: Releasing old material on Iodine Recordings Having shows get shot up by local gangs 8-hour practices Their love for No Knife Kris Roe's assistance in getting them on Kung Fu Records Trevor Keith producing their record Recording with Bill Stephenson Holding their ground on artwork and stage show Their record Malo Why they got back together Almost getting killed by the African Mob And a ton more Check out my new book The Couples' Checklist for my webcomic dailyBred. Katie Perry is someone you want on your team. As a booking agent and talent buyer, Kat (as she is often referred to as) is no stranger to having to juggle multiple balls at one time while keeping her cool. As a member of the Crawlspace Booking team, she helps bands like Murphy's Law, Days N Daze, Cock Sparrer, and even my band Tsunami Bomb to find shows and manage that process. As a talent buyer, Kat has the job of navigating the process of booking the show, dealing with managers/booking agents and artists, handling contract negotiation, keeping track of hundreds of emails every week, which takes the patience of a saint, so St. Katie Perry it is! During the pandemic, Kat has been a huge advocate for the work that NIVA and NITO have been doing to raise awareness for small, independent music clubs and workers in the music industry. With her job effectively going away during this time, she is thankful that we are making headway to being able to move towards having live music, but as she shares, she is still cautious as to how fast we should move. During our episode, we discuss her role in the music scene and what drives her to do this kind of work. We dive into some of the challenges that arise as part of the process, and hopefully shed some light on what bands may want to consider when working with a booking agent. Kat also shares some of her current favorite artists to look out for, as well as her 5 Desert Island album pics. Audio Karate made waves as members of the Kung-Fu Records roster back the 90s/early 00s. During their initial run from 1995-2005, they released two full length albums and toured heavily to support those releases with the likes of The Vandals, Tsunami Bomb & more in the U.S., Europe and Japan. Fast-forward to 2018, the band announced that they were going to be re-issuing their debut album Space Camp via Wiretap Records/Hidden Homes along with a string of shows with The Descendents and appearances at Fest. Not long after that, they announced a new album, Malo, which was released via A-F Records/SBAM/Wiretap Records. Additionally, they recently self-released a re-issue of their sophomore effort, Lady Melody, to much fanfare. On this episode, we discuss their time as a band and what it was like to come back after such a long break.
