Blake Smith and his rock band Figdish from the 90's Chicago scene has never taken things too seriously; never been careerists, and in fact went out of their way to indulge in hijinx and sabotage, despite ending up with 2 hugely influential records and a solid major label record deal. This was the band that came of age with Varuca Salt, Local H and Smoking Popes with comparisons to Replacements and Husker Du that intentionally played a set of Neil Diamond covers at a label showcase in front of A&R from all the biggies. The same band that threw a sandwich off their hotel balcony and covered Marilyn Manson and his crew in hoagie. Blake Smith and band mate Mike Wilison went on to start the electronica based project Caviar with pretty solid success with lots of TV and film placement. But its the music that was written before they lost their record deal with Polygram that is the focus of a new Figdish release, the first in over 25 years, called Feels Like The Very First Two Times (Forge Again). These apocryphal songs complete the journey of this band and round out a top flight collection of powerful chicago indierock of the 90's scene that left a lasting impact on rock today, despite the hijinx and sabotage.
It's not out of bounds to say that the Smoking Popes began as a bit of a joke. Vocalist, guitarist and songwriter Josh Caterer deems the earliest incarnation of the band as “a Spinal Tap version of hardcore punk,” choosing song titles first and how those songs would actually go later. But after finding a propulsive drummer in a teenage Mike Felumlee, the quartet began showing true heart around 1993: no longer just goofing off in the garage, Caterer was penning some of the punchiest, most direct odes to lost love on the college radio dial, emphasizing all the best parts of the Smiths, Cheap Trick, Roy Orbison and the Ramones, while feeling wholly original. It's now been three decades since Born To Quit, the band's heroic half-hour featuring “Need You Around” and “Rubella,” put them on the map. And although an LP reissue dropped earlier this year (without the band's consent or knowledge), Josh and Mike decided that the Popes needed their own “Taylor's Version” of sorts, in order to take these songs back into their possession — even in the most modest of terms. So before a minimal audience in a small, central Illinois studio, the band chose to cut Born To Quit live, front to back, and a vinyl version comes out this week to put a stamp on the occasion. During this episode, Josh and Mike speak to their longevity as a unit, what we can expect from their brand new album this spring, and what it meant to control Born To Quit's legacy a bit, with this new approach. We also dive into Mike's tenure in Alkaline Trio, and Josh's solo performances pressed to wax during the 2020 lockdown. Austin Texas quartet GENTLEMEN ROGUES celebrate aggressive guitar pop anthems — bearing the influences of The Replacements, Superdrag, Jawbreaker, and similar visionaries — and have been gaining momentum and increased attention. Since their debut in 2011, the band — Danny Dunlap (guitar/vocals), Josh Power (drums), John Christoffel (guitar), and Dave Hawkins (bass, vocals) — have honed their hooks over numerous singles, EPs, and the 2022 full-length collection, A History of Fatalism. Springsteen sideman Steven van Zandt hand-picked their single “Do the Resurrection!” as the “Coolest Song in the World” on his SiriusXM radio show, Little Steven's Underground Garage. Garnering heavy airplay, listeners worldwide agreed, voting “Do the Resurrection!” as one of the top ten “Coolest Songs of 2021.” Gentlemen Rogues have supported diverse acts like the Lemonheads, Smoking Popes, the Dandy Warhols, Mrs Magician, and Riverboat Gamblers on stages across the U.S. and the UK. In recent years Gentlemen Rogues opened for indie-punk icons Superchunk and Bob Mould, who personally selected the band to provide sole support on the Texas leg of his Distortion and Blue Hearts tour. Brand New full length "Surface Noise" is set for release February 16th 2024. Thanks for listening!!! There are all kinds of lifers. There's the lifer that starts a band and then spends their life playing in that band. And that's great. Then there's the lifer that starts a band, watches that band fall apart, returns to the hometown scene that made him (in this case the wonderful and influential town of Champaign, Illinois), and then dedicates his life to giving back and cultivating the community around him. And in the process finds a life far richer and rewarding than he could've imagined — while simultaneously honoring the very ethos that made him start a band in the first place. Might as well stop being coy about this — we're talking about our ol' buddy Joel Spencer of the criminally (CRIMINALLY!) overlooked band Menthol. And his story has got us a bit sentimental and misty eyed over here. Sorry. On this episode we talk to Joel about reuniting a summer version of Menthol, the ‘90s Chicago music scene, the ‘90s Champaign music scene, Honcho Overload, Smoking Popes, Triplefastaction, Capitol Records, lasers shooting out of Louise Post's mouth, two versions of DANGER: ROCK SCIENCE, that infamous practice space on Broadway, the Winter Dance Party, and the indestructibility of Herb Rosen. This is a good one. We're glad we know you, Joel Spencer!

This wasn't the interview I'd set out to have with Smoking Popes frontman Josh Caterer. Smoking Popes were set to play an early slot on Day Three of Riot Fest; unfortunately the weather had other plans for the band. Flash flooding in the Chicago area forced Riot Fest organizers to push back the door time from 1pm - 3pm. As a result, a handful of earlier bands were 86'd from the line up, including the Popes. I ran into Josh as he got the text to say that a force majeure had forced them off the schedule. Shortly after that, we sat down for an interview, three hours earlier than originally planned. While the weather thwarted the Popes (their legion of fans), we can feel excited about what's ahead, including lots more new music! I love having Josh on the show; I'm a fan of his music and him personally. Car Con Carne is presented by Alex Ross Art. Visit Alex Ross on YouTube! Among the many bands bringing excellent power pop/punk to the mainstream in the 90s, floating slightly above the rest were Chicago's Smoking Popes. Probably best known for their song "Need You Around" featured on the Clueless soundtrack, the band released some excellent albums there for a while that stood out thanks to the power of the riffs and the unmistakable croon of Josh Caterer. Once Josh converted to Christianity, he felt he couldn't continue in the same way, so the band went from top priority to secondary. They continue to put out strong material, just on their own schedule. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of their debut, Get Fired was just released on vinyl for the first time with a couple bonus tracks, including a surprising cover. Josh and I get into all of it. Josh Caterer is best known as the lead singer of legendary Chicago pop/punk band Smoking Popes. In 2021, he released a pair of lockdown-inspired solo albums, “The Hideout Sessions” and “The SPACE Sessions.” Hailed by fans and critics alike, the Chicago Reader said, “One of the distinctive characteristics of Caterer’s sound has always been the contrast between his choirboy vocals and the crunch of his band, and the allure of that approach has never been stronger.” The First Time is hosted by Jenn Sodini. Produced by Bobby Evers and Julie Mueller. Podcast produced by Andy Vasoyan and Jenn Rourke. Recorded by Tony Baker.
Fig Dish IS a 1990s rock band based in Chicago. The band signed to PolyGram Records in 1995 and released two full-length albums before becoming inactive in 1998. Fig Dish's sound was influenced by 80s college rock and indie bands such as Dinosaur Jr. and The Replacements, and has drawn comparisons to Cheap Trick. They were part of a mid-90s Chicago rock scene that included The Smashing Pumpkins, Veruca Salt, and Local H. They were closely associated and often shared bills with those and other Chicago acts such as Triple Fast Action, Smoking Popes, and Hushdrops. The band's name was said to have been chosen for its resemblance, when pronounced, to the vulgar German phrase fick dich. That's What Love Songs Often Do, Fig Dish's 1995 major label debut album, which had been out of print for years, was re-released in April 2013. Chicago Magazine wrote that the band was a "folkloric Chicago outfit," and quoted Blake Smith's summary of the band's career: "We were too busy being the underdog Midwestern raging partying guys, and it killed us.... We just weren't very good at playing the game, and we drank a lot back in those days." Faced with an indefinite touring hiatus, Josh Caterer improvised. The musician recorded a pair of “live” albums – The Space Sessions and The Hideout Sessions. No audience, no overdubs – just a trio of well-rehearsed musicians putting new spins on old classics. Caterer's vocal range tends toward crooner as many of the song veer into jazz territory. That's nothing new, of course. His unique vocal delivery is a major piece of what set Smoking Popes apart from their pop-punk brethren in the 90s, finding fans in everyone from Green Day to Morrissey. Caterer joins us to discuss his journey through the height of the 90s music industry crunch, to connecting with religion and reforming the Smoking Popes.
