Survival Guide is, for all intents and purposes, Emily Whitehurst. What began as collaboration evolved into a solo act. For the project's fourth album, deathdreams, the musician has continued to push her limits, playing nearly every instrument on its 11 tracks. Whitehurst has had plenty of collaborative projects over the years, including her stint in punk band, Tsunami Bomb and the follow up group, The Action Design. But sometimes the purest form of expression requires an artist to take things into their own hands. Transcript available here. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Emily WhitehurstTake a walk with me down Fascination Street, as I get to know Emily Whitehurst. Emily first gained recognition in the pop punk bands Generic Asphalt, and Plinky; before gaining world wide acclaim as the front woman for Tsunami Bomb, and later The Action Design. In this episode, we chat about her getting into music at a very young age, how she came to be involved in each of those bands, and some stories from the road. She also explains what it was like to play a ridiculous number of Van's Warped Tour shows. We also touch on why she moved to San Antonio, Texas, and how that opened the door for her to have her very first Christmas tree as an adult! Then we get into her newest band, Survival Guide, and her new album Death Dreams. I love this album; so we talk about a good bit of it. She explains why she used some household items as instruments on some songs, which songs are actually about death dreams, and she lets me play my favorite track from the album. Plus, she talks about teaming up with a San Antonio country band, to play some shows, and release a song together! Check out Death Dreams, available everywhere, and follow her to see where she tours next! This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/4068452/advertisement

Today's guest makes me not want to dream. So maybe it's fitting that this is released on Halloween. Welcome Emily Whitehurst of Survival Guide to the podcast. And throughout this episode, it's clear that her band is aptly named. From her start with the bands Plinky and Tsunami Bomb, she's always had a part in writing lyrics and melodies. And it served her well as Tsunami Bomb played on Warped Tours and had some pretty great opening slots. But with her next band, The Action Design, Emily expanded her musical palette and the music just got better. Again, she scored some great opening slots with bands like Social Distortion and earned a bunch of new fans. When The Action Design ended, she and her bassist decided they wanted to keep writing music. So they forged on as Survival Guide, expanding the music even more. But when the other half of the musical duo left, Emily took a hard look at the band and made the decision to continue on. She kind of had to. You can't dissolve a band called Survival Guide! Her first full length as a solo project is called deathdreams because that's what some of the songs are about, dreams where Emily died! She has obviously changed how she writes now that Survival Guide is just Emily, and it my favorite release in her catalog. The music is varied and well written and sometimes spooky. We had the pleasure of interviewing Emily Whitehurst of Survival Guide and Tsunami Bomb over Zoom video!“Music is crucial to my survival!” said Emily Whitehurst. “Survival Guide is one woman trying to shape her own place in this world as a musician.”An electronic indie-pop artist with a background in punk, Emily is the solo force behind Survival Guide. Her danceable tunes evoke a sonic birthday cake: alternating layers of Depeche Mode, Metric, Peter Gabriel, and Grimes, with vibrant melodies and vocals the icing on top.A California native now residing in Texas, Emily's music obsession began with Green Day, leading her to a dreams-come-true life of punk rock as she traversed continents fronting the band Tsunami Bomb as “Agent M.” Over the years, her music gradually shifted toward synth pop in The Action Design, then further into the electronic indie-pop realm as Survival Guide.Originally a duo, Survival Guide's first album, Way To Go, – dubbed “passion behind an electronic soul” by New Noise Magazine – was released in 2015. It was around this time when Survival Guide slowly, amicably yet painfully became a solo act, leaving Whitehurst unsure of what to do next. Never having written or performed music alone, she considered everything from starting a new band to quitting music altogether. After a major geographical shift, an acoustic album, and some solo touring, she's finally ready to return as a solo Survival Guide. The newly released, alter-ego Survival Guide debuted in January with RHV1.5 (short for Request Hotline, Vol. 1.5): featuring two intriguing dance-party reimaginings of AFI's “Totalimmortal” and “Girl's Not Grey on Side A alongside two contemplative Misfits piano-serenade covers (“Skulls” and “Hybrid Moments”) on Side B.With only 500 copies pressed on randomly colored vinyl, RHV1.5 is also a taster for the 11-track, digital-only Request Hotline, Vol. 2, featuring all songs from the 7” plus an eclectic array of further punk covers from Green Day, Runaways, Avril Lavigne, Distillers, Tony Sly, Sleater-Kinney, and Maybe Tomorrow, each with its own bold and unique Survival Guide treatment. We want to hear from you! There aren't many stunt coordinators and fight choreographers who can say they have helped to change the course of modern day action cinema like Jonathan Eusebio. His work on the 'Bourne' films alone sparked a movement in Hollywood into more realistic, grittier fight sequences, inspired by his background in Filipino martial arts. He took this style into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, shaping the grappling movements of Black Widow (played by Scarlett Johansson), and adding his flair to films like 'Doctor Strange' and 'Black Panther'. However, it is his work on the 'John Wick' series for which he is most revered - an inspiring mix of Bourne's close-range efficiency and the wrestling and judo moves he pursued at Marvel, with more than a hint of 'gun-fu' inspired by one his favourite filmmakers, John Woo. His recent credits - the 'Obi-Wan Kenobi' TV show for Disney+ and 'The Matrix Resurrections' (2021) - show a stunt coordinator operating at the industry's highest levels, commanding the action in some of the world's most popular franchises. Now he is eager to follow his friends and mentors at 87eleven Action Design into directing - people like 87eleven co-founders, filmmakers and martial artists Chad Stahelski and David Leitch, and his stunt buddies J.J. Perry and Sam Hargrave. But after such a trendsetting career, where does he go from here? And how can he continually try to push new boundaries in on-screen action? It's a tall order, but if anyone is up for the challenge, it's Jonathan Eusebio.LINKSJonathan Eusebio on IMDb: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0262389/Jonathan Eusebio profile on Kung Fu Movie Guide: https://bit.ly/ProfileJonathanEusebio 'Obi-Wan Kenobi' trailer: https://youtu.be/3Yh_6_zItPU'The Matrix Resurrection' trailer: https://youtu.be/9ix7TUGVYIo'The Bourne Identity' pen fight: https://youtu.be/h6cdNtvFGB0'The Bourne Ultimatum' fight scene - Bourne vs. Desh (Joey Ansah): https://youtu.be/uLt7lXDCHQ087eleven Action Design website: https://www.87eleven.net/ Hosted on Acast. People come to me with all sorts of elaborate ideas to "change the world," like games, festivals, art projects, films, and apps. Often, these ideas have little connection to how the idea will make a real change happen on the ground once people have "experienced" the idea . . . (i.e. "I suppose we'll just put a link somewhere, then people will . . . ") This entrepreneurship model is back-to-front. If you have an idea to make an impact, you need to forget your crazy idea and go straight to a real human being and get them to make the change you are hoping your idea will influence them to make. Talk to ten people on your street. Call every person you went to school with. Talk to your dad's golf buddies. Get them to do a real thing and observe what it takes. I'm calling it the ACTION DESIGN THRESHOLD. Pass it before you write any code or spend any money - or before you even have an idea at all. Use Slack, Google lists, Zoom, Instagram, Canva, Figma, and Discord. Do it using your own email and your own phone number. Just get a real human to do a real thing in the real world. You can do it with a conversation, a party, a poster, or a sticker. Create a 21-day challenge. Offer free consulting calls. Start a group. Just get out there and practice making change happen by talking to a human in real life. Once you've succeeded in getting your first real human to do the action, then try and replicate it with two humans. Then try and get ten humans to do it. What will it take to scale your actions from ten humans to 100 humans? Look for a pattern and an opportunity. What kind of actions do you need to design this scaling for? This is your idea that will work. Any idea you have before you get ten real humans to change is probably a junk idea. At the least, it will need much pivoting. And if you can't get ten people to make a change from a conversation with you and any simple tools you give them, or you don't have the networking and marketing skills to find these ten humans, there's no way your idea will fly in a theoretical future when you have millions in funding. * * * How to Save the World is a Podcast About the Psychology of What Gets People To Take On Sustainable Behavior and Climate Action: Environmental engineer, designer, and author, Katie Patrick, hunts down the latest behavioral science literature from top universities such as Harvard, MIT, and Stanford to unearth the evidence-based techniques you can use to get more people to adopt your environmental campaign, program, or product. Today I talked to Zarak Khan and Laurel Newman about their book Building Behavioral Science in an Organization (Action Design Press, 2021). As an academic discipline, behavioral science is as the book's introduction states, an umbrella term that includes social psychology, behavioral economics, and sociology among other fields. As applied in business and government, for instance, behavioral science is often a matter of creating small “nudges” in designing changes to human behavior in hopes of achieving buy-in rather than resistance from those who are wedded to the status quo. Khan and Newman, who co-edited and contributed to this book, are candid about the challenges involved. They are also faithfully committed as professionals to achieving real innovations and transformational advances whenever feasible. Kung Fu Movie Guide Podcast

Daniel Bernhardt is a true renaissance man; a martial artist from Switzerland who went from being a professional model in Paris to a Hollywood action star. In the 1990s, he was a leading man in low-budget martial arts films - the star of slicker-than-your-average straight-to-video hits like the 'Bloodsport' sequels, 'True Vengeance' and 'Perfect Target', working alongside fellow martial artists and aspiring filmmakers like Chad Stahelski, David Leitch, Brad Martin, Jonathan Eusebio and J.J. Perry. When the video market crashed in the early 2000s, Daniel took a different route; moving into the stunt world to become what Chad Stahelski calls an "action actor", someone who can act, fight, perform the stunts, and train the actors. When Chad and David launched 87eleven Action Design, Daniel was right beside them, working on all their major hits, from 'The Matrix Reloaded' to 'Parker', 'Logan', all three 'John Wick' films, 'Atomic Blonde', 'Hobbs and Shaw', 'Birds of Prey', and 'Nobody'. For the latter, Daniel also worked as the film's fight trainer, turning the fifty-something comedy writer Bob Odenkirk into a convincing action hero. He puts his multifaceted, hugely successful career down to "pure coincidence", but he is being modest. In hindsight, maybe becoming an action star was always his destiny? After all, his first fight scene was with Jean-Claude Van Damme during a fashion shoot in the early 1990s. It was Van Damme's encouragement which would provide Daniel with the confidence he needed to try his hand at acting and - as they say - the rest is history. Daniel Bernhardt's new film, 'Hell Hath No Fury' - directed by Jesse V. Johnson - is out now in cinemas in North America and released on digital from 9 November, courtesy of Well Go USA. On 22 December, Daniel returns to 'The Matrix' franchise, reprising his role as Agent Johnson in 'The Matrix Resurrections'. Professor Sein is probably best known for his legacy paper on Action Design Research published in MISQ.In this episode, we initiate a short series of podcast episodes on design; breaking the ice by discussing action design research (ADR), some of the politics of publishing, and friendship in academia. The final broadcast of 2020 is now the final podcast of 2020, and From The Basement ends the year with a bang. The Basement Boys have more -- like fifteen minutes more -- of their interview with rising action star Ellen Hollman, who puts much foot to ass in her new flick Army of One. And she stars opposite Keanu Reeves in next year's much anticipated The Matrix 4! Ellen discusses being a part of 87eleven Action Design, the team responsible for the dazzling action choreography seen in the John Wick films. She also reveals as much as she's allowed about The Matrix sequel, what it's like training alongside Keanu Reeves, and more. Ellen is one of the coolest actors we've met during From The Basement's eleven years on the air, and this interview reflects that. But that's not all; our very own Jason Hewlett wrote a book! He and We Want to Believe lead investigator Peter Renn penned the non-fiction anthology I Want to Believe: One Man's Journey into the paranormal, which is available at Amazon.ca, Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble. The book chronicles Peter's adventures as a paranormal investigator, which span twenty-seven years. Shawn's read it, and he grills his co-host on the details. What are those? Stick with us! And stick around, as the Dynamic Duo make time to talk Vince Vaughn's horror/comedy Freaky, the Canadian fright flick Z, and much, much more. You can hear it all by pushing play on the player below. Trey discusses working alongside veteran Mena Suvari and rising star Ema Horvath, how a key creepy scene was crafted, and more. He also shares a personal battle he had with the DMV. It's a fun conversation for fans! But that's not all; The Basement Boys review the upcoming action flick Army of One starring Ellen Hollman and featuring the fight and stunt choreography of 87eleven Action Design, the crew behind the wicked fights of the John Wick franchise. Does this gender breaking -- and bone breaking -- movie deliver the goods? Stick with us! When martial artist Larnell Stovall first saw the film Blade in 1998, it was a lightbulb moment. But it wasn't the actions of Wesley Snipes as the titular kick-ass vampire hunter which would spark a sudden interest in wanting to work in the movies; it was the actions of the people Wesley was beating up. Feeling inspired, Larnell took a bus from New Orleans to Hollywood armed only with his martial arts skills and the dream of making it in the stunt world. It wasn't long before he caught the attention of Chad Stahelski and David Leitch - owners of 87eleven Action Design - which would prove to be his ticket to the big-time, working as a fight choreographer and stunt coordinator on some of the biggest and best martial arts movies of recent times, including Undisputed 3: Redemption (2010), Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning (2012), and work with fellow karate expert, Michael Jai White, including Falcon Rising (2014) and his Never Back Down sequels. He has worked in India - most notably as the award-winning action director on Sultan (2016), one of the highest-grossing Indian films of all time. Larnell has also made in-roads into the mainstream, acting as stunt coordinator on films like Ride Along (2014) and Creed (2015). In recent years, he has worked on some of Netflix's biggest shows, including the first season of Altered Carbon (2018) and Titans - a gritty take on the Teen Titans comic book, now entering its third season. Titans has provided Larnell with the opportunity to move into directing, mirroring a similar career trajectory to his buddies at 87eleven. He has the skills, the experience, and the creativity; and we cannot wait to see what Larnell cooks up next. Sometimes things just go better in twos and that was the case regarding our guests for this episode. Zarak Kahn is the Behavioral Innovation Director at Maritz and Erik Johnson is an independent Behavioral Science Consultant. They are the co-hosts of Action Design Radio and board members at Action Design Network. Kurt and Tim have known them as coaches and colleagues and wanted to talk to them about all of that. We discussed how the application of behavioral science continues to grow in both the corporate and policy words. Today, there are more jobs, more workshops, more bachelor's programs, more masters programs, more PhD programs, more meetups and more bootcamps than ever before. We expressed our collective desires to make behavioral science so easy to do it will be ingrained into every job from UX to Marketing to HR, and how we’d like to see people applying a behavioral lens in all of their decision-making. In our grooving session, Kurt and Tim emphasized the importance of expanding the community of people applying behavioral science and we are grateful to share the mantle with very bright and fine folk like Erik and Zarak.    Links Erik Johnson Twitter: https://twitter.com/erikleejohnson  Erik Johnson LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/erikleejohnson/  Erik Johnson Website: erikj.net  Zarak Kahn LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/khanzarak/ Action Design Network: http://www.action-design.org/ Action Design Radio (podcast): https://actiondesignradio.libsyn.com/ Robert Cialdini: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Cialdini Dan Kahneman: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Kahneman Richard Thaler: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Thaler Cass Sunstein: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cass_Sunstein    Musical Links Idles: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BuQG6_evFc8 Local Natives: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Local_Natives Lana Del Rey: https://lanadelrey.com/ Carley Rae Jepson: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWNaR-rxAic Wye Oak “The Louder I Call the Faster it Runs”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kO7ffikJOE4 Sylvan Esso: http://www.sylvanesso.com/ Johnny Flynn: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnny_Flynn_%26_The_Sussex_Wit Sharon Van Etten: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7sTHoeH0eA Gillian Welch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJ_nWPxrzmE M Ward: https://mwardmusic.com/ The National: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yIWmRbHDhGw

We have been reporting from the Fighting Spirit Film Festival since it started back in 2016. Now in its fourth year, the event has grown to become the UK's largest martial arts movie festival; a two-day celebration which welcomes some of the genre's biggest names and best talent. As well as screening some of the hottest new feature films from around the world, the festival also provides an opportunity for up-and-coming, independent filmmakers to have their movies shown on the big screen. This spirit of collaboration and inclusivity strikes at the heart of what makes the festival such an inspiring event. This episode - recorded live at the 2019 Fighting Spirit Film Festival - features conversations with a number of key people involved in the independent martial arts movie scene, from established stars to talented young actors and filmmakers destined to become the next big thing. On this show, you will hear from the creator of the Fighting Spirit Film Festival, Soo Cole; actor and wushu expert, Leslie Kunz; the filmmaker and martial artist, Beau Fowler; the writers, directors and stars of the short action comedy '10 Minutes for a Pound', Linda Louise Duan and Jadey Duffield; the Hong Kong film expert and head of Eastern Heroes, Ricky Baker; the Italian martial arts actor, Max Repossi; one of the producers behind the 'Dead End' series, Daniella Dahoui; and the team behind zombie action Brit-flick, 'Tribal', the director Matt Routledge and star Zara Phythian. Listen as they describe what the Fighting Spirit Film Festival means to them, as well as answering a series of quick-fire questions stolen from the rather brilliant Artists Behind the Action podcast, produced by 87eleven Action Design. A huge thank you to Soo Cole, the Fighting Spirit team and all of the staff at Stratford Picturehouse for their help with this episode.
