Welcome back to the Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning Podcast for episode #151 with certified Goleman Emotional Intelligence coach, Renée Adams. Watch the interview on YouTube.https://youtu.be/aavQGiAAXo8 Download 3 FREE EQ Guides from Renee's website FREE EQ Guides https://hoppypoppie.com/guide-sign-up/  See past episodes here https://www.achieveit360.com/episodes/  On this episode you will learn: ✔︎ Why Renee sees the importance of teaching EI to young children and their parents as critical work. ✔︎ What are the Emotional Intelligence Competencies that the Goleman Training focuses on. ✔︎ What's missing from today's corporate environments? ✔︎ EI strategies that parents can use immediately to reduce stress while at the same time supporting your child at home or in the classroom.   Renée Adams[i] is a children's book author, writing books that teach children and parents foundational Emotional Intelligence skills, including being able to identify and name their emotions. We have seen the importance of this skill that started with our interview #28[ii] with Dr. Daniel Siegel who talks about the importance of naming an emotion to tame it[iii] and then again with the Founding Director of Yale's Center for Emotional Intelligence, Marc Brackett on episode #22[iv] with his book, Permission to Feel. I'm Andrea Samadi, author, and educator from Toronto, Canada, now in Arizona, and like many of our listeners, have been fascinated with learning and understanding the science behind high performance strategies in our schools, sports, and the workplace with ideas that we can all use, understand and implement immediately.   When I was introduced to Renée Adams, I saw her background as a Certified Goleman Emotional Intelligence[v] coach, I immediately contacted her to see if I could pick her brain on many questions that I am asked myself in the area of Emotional Intelligence. Why not ask an expert when I have the chance.   Let's meet Renée Adams.   Welcome Renée, thank you for coming on the podcast today to speak with me.   Are you still located in Bolder, CO? I almost considered moving to CO from Toronto in the late 1990s, since it was the Columbine tragedy that caused me to move to the US back then. I picked AZ because I really struggled with the altitude in CO.   Q1:  I did watch some of your other podcasts to learn more about why you started this work centered around Emotional Intelligence, and I will link these episodes in the show notes, but did wonder at what point in your career did you see the importance of teaching Emotional Intelligence to children and parents? Where was the missing link?   Q2: I cover 6 social and emotional competencies on this podcast (Mindset, Decision-Making, Self-Awareness, Social Awareness, Self-Regulated Learning/Self-Management, and Relationship Skills) as they closely mirror www.casel.org's SEL competencies. Can you explain the competencies that were important in your Goleman Certification Program, and maybe how you would teach them to a parent or child? (Self-awareness, self-management, others awareness, relationship management).     Q3: When I first launched this podcast, I interviewed my husband on episode #1 on “The Importance of Setting Up an SEL Program in Your School, or Emotional Intelligence Training Program in Your Workplace.”[vi] And it's funny thinking about it now because he had just got home from traveling and I handed him a list of questions and said “Can you answer these and speak into the mic?” It was a memorable launch to the podcast. Why do you think it's so important to teach these skills at an early age and what skills do you think are missing from today's corporate environments?     Q4: So growing up, we didn't talk about our emotions in my home. If I ever cried at all, my Dad would yell at me because he hated to see emotion. And I'm the type that wears my emotions on my sleeve. I couldn't hide them, not even when I knew I'd get a kick in the behind if I ever showed them. So now, I'm a parent, and learning all these new strategies from the work I'm doing, and trying to do things differently, but it's exhausting sometimes. I forget how school-aged children react emotionally to everything. What are some strategies to really listen to what our kids are thinking and feeling, without letting it suck the life force out of us as parents?   Q6: What is your vision for what EQ programs?   Q7: Is there anything I have missed that's important?   FREE EQ Guides https://hoppypoppie.com/guide-sign-up/   Thank you very much for speaking with me today. Episode 17 – Influencing with Developed Emotional Intelligence What is Emotional Intelligence? The capacity to be aware of, control, and express one's emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically.   5 Emotional Intelligence Competencies with Solutions to Success Self-Awareness/Reflection – Understanding yourself by knowing your emotional Strengths and Weaknesses. This is also knowing how others perceive us as being know how your mood directs thoughts and decisions.  Solution to Success: Journal and if you are unsure what to write then use prompts. Also, you can slow down to grab your composure (Take just a few minutes to think). Be introspective in nature and seek honest feedback from those you trust. Become an internal change agent driven to improve weaknesses and strengths. Be honest with yourself and check your ego.   Self-Regulation/Discipline – Taking control of your emotions when faced with challenge or stress. Think about decisions and outcomes. Be reserved in language toward others. Holding to your personal values. Do not become a slave to your emotions.  Solution to Success: Build your own values-based code of conduct. Take ownership no matter the outcome but be sure to praise others when it is good. When faced with giving an emotional response use 15-30 seconds of deep breathing to gain control. Develop 3 different courses of action to allow yourself to think in different directions.   Motivation/Purpose – It is important to know why you are doing what you are doing and have a positive mindset of success. Knowing your why in anything you do has to be your center of focus. If you are unsure of your why then your motivation will drain quickly.  Solution to Success: Find your why, which can be done using the lessons of Simon Sinek. Once you know your why, measure your motivation level (low, medium, high). Set achievable goals to elevate confidence and a positive environment. We will be faced with times of despair or problems so a bridge to overcome is using resilience (Hunt the Good stuff is great for this). We have to remind ourselves; Attitude is everything and to think long term.   Empathy – Put yourself in other people’s shoes to help understand their emotional state. This will help you understand the wants, needs, and correlated viewpoints of each. Empathy will allow you to react in a worthy manner according to other people's emotions. A highly useful reaction for you is being calm to help the others be calm.  Solution to Success: Put yourself in other's shoes by going through a thought process of you being the one going through the emotion due to a circumstance. Good or bad visualize yourself going through the same instance. Train yourself to be observant of body language, but also be aware that your body language could be what they are mimicking. Once you notice another’s feelings then respond to them and attempt to create a positive situation if need be.   Social Skills – Having the ability to communicate with others no matter the circumstance or situation. Being a team player who creates an atmosphere or environment of positive movement forward to success. Social Skills open the doors of success for others through positive affirmation and motivation. The foundation of this is relationship building.  Solutions to Success: Learn about conflict resolution and how to direct the conflict when faced with it. Improve communication verbally and nonverbally by engaging in meaningful conversation and by paying attention to your body language. You should strive to have the tough conversations as much as the easy ones. Praise of others is key to building relationships.     Books talked about in this episode: Emotional Intelligence – https://amzn.to/2JPg9Z9 Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff…and it’s all small stuff – https://amzn.to/2FHikIZ The First Time Manager – https://amzn.to/2WyTSAw Start with Why – https://amzn.to/2OEZt5G Find Your Why – https://amzn.to/2FMANFe Extreme Ownership – https://amzn.to/2FCiuBy The Way of The Seal – https://amzn.to/2K6SPXl The Three Meter Zone – https://amzn.to/2Wx554t 5 Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace – https://amzn.to/2Wx58gF Leading With Honor - https://amzn.to/2Up10BW   You can see more about the Instinctive Influencers at: Our website Link – instinctiveinfluencers.com Our Facebook Link - https://www.facebook.com/101influence/ Our Instagram Link - https://www.instagram.com/instinctiveinfluencers/ Our Twitter Link - https://twitter.com/101Influence   Be sure to Subscribe, Rate, and Review on our show on the Facebook Page and Apple Podcast.
