POPULARITY
Welcome to In Reality, the podcast about truth, disinformation and the media hosted by Eric Schurenberg, a long-time journalist and media executive, now the founder of the Alliance for Trust in Media.Among the many forces unravelling institutional media is the relatively recent ability of journalists to become mini-institutions on their own, thanks to social media and especially newsletter platforms like Substack and Ghost. For journalists with a following or a novel approach, going indy can yield a much better living than they could earn in a traditional newsroom. Eric Newcomer was one of the early movers in this parallel media universe and has proven to be one of the most successful. Having cut his teeth as a tech writer for Bloomberg, he was one of the first writers to join the groundbreaking digital newsletter, The Information. Four years ago, he branched out on his own, and now has a newsletter and podcast, two million in revenue, employees, and a highly regarded tech conference, Cerebral Valley AI summit. Eric S met up with Eric N at the first HumanX conference in March. That's accounts for the background noise, if you hear it. Among other things, they covered how to build a one-man media empire in the modern era, the questions of building trust, and whether and how institutional newsrooms fit into the new media ecosystem.

https://astralcodexten.substack.com/p/two-small-corrections-and-updates 1: I titled part of my post yesterday “RIP Polymarket”, which was a mistake. Polymarket would like to remind everyone that they are very much alive, with a real-money market available to anyone outside the US, and some kind of compliant US product (maybe a play-money market) in the works. 2: Sam M and Eric N want to remind you that you have until the end of next week to get your 2022 prediction contest entries in. Also: We have some plans to compare (aggregates of) ACX reader predictions against various prediction markets. But there are probably much cooler things we can do which we haven't thought of yet! If you run a prediction market and have an idea for an interesting collaboration that involves sharing our data before it's publicly released, get in touch with us through the contest feedback form. If it's something time sensitive (e.g. an experiment that needs to be started before the contest submission deadline), make sure you do so soon. If you don't run a prediction market but still have an idea for something interesting we can do with the contest data, leave a comment on this open thread and we'll hopefully see it." You can reach them through this form.

Many have wondered if President Trump could ever be held accountable for his actions either while president or even before he held the highest office in America. It's no secret that Donald Trump is notoriously known as Teflon-Don for his savviness to evade civil or criminal liability for the many things he's been accused of, but this week we speak with a person who knows a thing or two about prosecuting Trump and his organization. Tristan Snell is the former Assistant Attorney General for New York, and successfully prosecuted Trump University which lead to a $25 million settlement; the largest settlement against the Trump family. They talk about the similarities between this case and the existing civil and criminal cases brought forth by New York AG, Letitia James, as well as the status of the January 6th commission investigation and how that might play out. Qualcomm patent litigation (the largest in US history at the time, with a $1.2 billion victory for Broadcom), and landmark deals with Chase, Wells Fargo, and Walmart, among others. He has also started three businesses and served as a startup Product Manager, General Counsel, COO, and CEO, and he has represented dozens of startups and small to medium sized businesses, as well as early-stage venture funds, giving him a deep understanding of the special challenges facing high-growth businesses.Tristan graduated from Princeton University, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, then received his law degree from the University of Virginia, where he was an editor of the Virginia Law Review. He later worked in the renowned intellectual property, appellate, and venture practices at WilmerHale, where he also worked on the Boumediene v. Bush team that won the first habeas writs for detainees at Guantanamo Bay. He served as a law clerk to the Hon. Eric N. Vitaliano, U.S. District Court Judge for the Eastern District of New York, and as Assistant Attorney General for the State of New York as a civil prosecutor and investigator in consumer protection.Tristan has appeared as a commentator on CNN and Cheddar, and as a contributing writer for CNN and the Washington Post. LEXINGTON, Ky. (June 17, 2021) – Members of the University of Kentucky Board of Trustees today are considering a proposed $5.1 billion UK budget for 2021-2022. The budget describes how the university funds the salaries of some 20,000 employees, sets tuition for 30,000 students and details the operations of a hospital system that now comprises roughly half of UK's budget. But at its core, according to UK's Executive Vice President for Finance and Administration, Eric Monday, a budget is about values and priorities. Monday believes a budget provides a roadmap to better understand what the institution really values. In this episode of Behind the Blue, Monday discusses those values and priorities in detail as he breaks down a record budget for the University of Kentucky. "Behind the Blue" is available on iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher and Spotify. Become a subscriber to receive new episodes of “Behind the Blue” each week. Current guidelines recommend implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) in nonischemic cardiomyopathy (NICM) among patients with heart failure and ejection fraction ≤35%. Should this change? Should cardiac resynchronization therapy pacemakers be considered in patients with NICM and left bundle branch block? What were the data to support the use of ICDs for primary prevention in NICM? In this episode, Rachel Lampert, MD, moderates a debate between Michael R. Gold, MD, PhD, and Eric N. Prystowsky, MD, FACC, about whether primary prevention ICDs are still a valuable therapy in patients with NICM. LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 14, 2020) – The distinctive residential educational experience provided by the University of Kentucky has attracted thousands of students from across Kentucky, the country and the globe. That experience is critical for the future. This differentiated education will be more necessary than ever to help UK and students meet the ongoing and daunting new challenges our world must now confront. To that end, UK is making plans to open in August for the fall semester. To reach that goal, the university has undertaken a restart process and guiding principles to ‘Reinvent Normal’ for the campus community. Between April 26 and April 28, multiple teams were formed and asked to draft parallel concept papers for four different restart options. Teams were then asked to present their concept papers May 11-12. Currently, the university is consolidating the ideas, and will circulate them soon for campus-wide input. On this week’s episode of Behind the Blue, UK’s Executive Vice President for Finance and Administration, Dr. Eric N. Monday, returns to the podcast to discuss that process and the potential timeline for selection and adoption of a plan. "Behind the Blue" is available on iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher and Spotify. LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 23, 2020) –Among his many duties, UK’s Executive Vice President for Finance and Administration Dr. Eric N. Monday has helped lead the crisis response of the university to COVID-19. It’s something he has a great deal of experience in, having helped lead responses to two major hurricanes while serving in senior positions at Louisiana State University. This week, however, Monday is also part of a discussion about what will be a very challenging budget this coming year – a challenge created by the blows to the economy from the coronavirus. Along with President Eli Capilouto and other senior leaders, Monday leads a team that is developing a proposed budget for 2020-2021. The idea, President Capilouto said in an email to campus last week, is to make the “painful and tough choices” now that will “position UK to thrive when we emerge from this crisis.” Dr. Monday joins us on this special episode of ‘Behind the Blue’ to discuss that process and the steps UK is taking from here. Podcast Description "Everyone wanted diversity for the board, but it was really unclear as to how on Earth you have diversity over an entire globe with only 40 people on the entire board." Kate Klonick is an Assistant Professor at Law at St. John's University Law School and an Affiliate Fellow at the Information Society Project at Yale Law School. Her current research focuses on the development of Facebook's new Oversight Board -- an independent body that will hear user appeals from Facebook users and advise the platform about its online speech policies. Thanks to individual grants from the Knight Foundation, Charles Koch Institute, and MacArthur Foundation, she has amassed over 100+ hours of interviews and embedded research with the Governance Team at Facebook that is creating the Board. The results of this research will be published in a law review article in the Yale Law Journal in 2020, but available in draft form online in late 2019. Kate holds a JD from Georgetown University Law Center, where she was a Senior Editor at The Georgetown Law Journal and the Founding Editor of the The Georgetown Law Journal Online; and a PhD from Yale Law School where she studied under Jack Balkin, Tom Tyler, and Josh Knobe. She has a background in cognitive psychology which she apply to the study of emerging issues in law and technology. Specifically, this has included research and work on the Internet's effect on freedom of expression and private platform governance.
