We're exploring the world of "Don't Lose Mr. Cuddles" with author Dev Petty and illustrator Mike Boldt, while also diving deep into family dynamics with Lee Benson from Dinner Table. First up, Dev and Mike take us behind the scenes of their latest children's book featuring Chip, the enthusiastic dog. They share hilarious insights into the creative process, revealing how Mike builds characters using simple shapes (did you know Chip is essentially two potato chips?) and how Dev crafts stories that make kids laugh and feel connected. The conversation sparkles with humor as they discuss the challenges of school visits, the art of illustration, and the magic of creating children's books. Mike's journey from copying Disney artists to finding his unique style is particularly inspiring, showing that creativity is about finding your own voice. But the episode doesn't stop there! Lee Benson brings a powerful message about family value creation. He introduces the Dinner Table community, a groundbreaking approach to helping families grow together. In this podcast episode, Dr. Ryan Rush and his host discuss the significance of mealtime in family life, focusing on the emotional, spiritual, and physical transformations that can take place when families gather around the table. Dr. Rush, who is also known as "Dinner Table Ryan," talks about his book, "Restore the Table," which advocates for the power of shared meals in fostering strong familial bonds. He explains that mealtime is one of the most impactful habits a family can adopt, and it doesn't have to involve gourmet dishes or elaborate plans to be effective. The discussion begins humorously with Dr. Rush admitting he's not much of a cook but emphasizes the importance of the shared experience over the food itself. He elaborates on the "overachieving meal" as a major mistake many families make when trying to make meals too complex, which often leads to burnout. He advocates for simplicity, recalling his mother's recipe for sloppy joes and how it became a cherished memory for him, highlighting that meals should be about togetherness rather than perfection. The conversation touches on common pitfalls families face during mealtime, such as diving too deep into heavy conversations too quickly. Dr. Rush and his host share a funny story about a dinner guest who was uncomfortable with a deep question about marriage, illustrating how it's essential to keep conversations at the table light and natural at first. They also discuss the balance between allowing deeper conversations to flow naturally and avoiding turning mealtime into an interrogation. They recommend asking open-ended questions like, "Tell me your story," to let people share at their own pace.Additionally, they talk about how mealtimes shouldn't turn into lectures, particularly for parents who might feel the need to impart lessons to their kids during meals. Instead, mealtime should be about connection and fostering an environment where everyone feels heard and loved. They recount stories of their own experiences with overly serious meal discussions and the importance of creating a joyful atmosphere around the table. The episode also addresses the distractions that modern technology, such as phones and TVs, can bring to mealtime. Dr. Rush emphasizes the importance of being fully present during family meals and advises parents to set boundaries around media use during mealtimes. They reflect on how phones, even when not actively being looked at, can still send the message that the person in front of you isn't as important as whatever might be happening on the device.Lastly, Dr. Rush and his host encourage parents to embrace the chaos of mealtime with young children, understanding that even when things get messy, the act of sitting together and sharing a meal has lasting benefits. They talk about the future regrets parents may have when their children leave home, urging families to cherish these moments before they are gone. More than three quarters of families admit to having their phones at the dinner table, with one in four saying they don't chat at the table anymore. Brendan Kelly, Professor of Psychiatry at Trinity College Dublin joins us to discus further.

There are many emotions and perspectives about the state of our democracy today. Podcaster Gregory Humphrey suggests that forming your home as an anchor where family and friends can unite and know that shared values will be respected is an essential way to be protected from the bombast and chaos created by Donald Trump and his administration. At his home, near a lake, the loons have returned for a spring visit, and in that annual ritual, there is a lesson to be found about keeping the faith. A lesson for us in these days when democracy is under attack.

This one is a doozy - in all of the best ways. Tracy Hooper, founder of "The Confidence Project" talks with Trish about growing up with 5 siblings and why the dinner table was so very important. She calls her mom (who sounds fabulous by the way) the "OG Talk Show Host," because come dinner, she would be checking up on everyone seated around the table. Tracy says this was truly the foundation for communication. She explains her journey to the west coast, where she ultimately began this incredible project, although it didn't start out to be what it is today. Now, through keynotes and one on one advising, even virtual labs, Tracy helps those gain more confidence in the working environment. Her keynote, "Words to Use, Words to Lose," helps those speak more confidently, efficiently, and just plain smarter. Trish says she was blown away by not only Tracy's heart for this work, but all she's doing to help teach civility. Take some notes!

The FBI is warning that sexual extorsion schemes, or "sextortion", targeting underage boys are leading to an alarming increase in suicides of teenage boys. This happens when a scammer threatens and coerces a minor into sending sending sexually explicit photographs through social media. Today, Michael speaks with South Carolina State Representative Brandon Guffey, who's 17-year-old son Gavin died by suicide in 2022, after being a victim of 'sextortion.' This is a heartbreaking story to hear, but it brings forward an important conversation one must have with their kids to protect them. Original air date 10 March 2023.

She has over 10,000 hours of experience in education, both in the classroom and corporate sector. Even though she holds a Master's degree in education, she struggled to understand her neurodivergent and oppositional kids. Inspired by her experience using Myers Briggs and the Enneagram with business teams, she spent over a decade researching temperament pattens to help family teams. She is a best-selling author and host of the Not So Normal Parenting podcast. Her podcast is entitled Not So Normal Parenting because not only are she and her kids neurodivergent but some of her life experiences, such as driving off a cliff her wedding night and going viral for embarrassing her seventeen-year old son by dancing on a snowy and jammed interstate, fall into that category. In addition to being talked about by Hoda Kotb, the BackStreet Boys, and Princess Kate, even U2 singer Bono mentioned the incident in his autobiography. Because Wendy herself has struggled as a helicopter parent, a cranky parent and an embarrassing parent, she wants to help other parents struggle……..a little bit less!

The conversation also explores the challenges and joys of creating a podcast that features raw, vulnerable stories from celebrities about their paths to sobriety. Cat explains how emotional honesty, recovery, and resilience have shaped her role as a mom and what she hopes her podcast can inspire in others.
