As a service design professional, what is your primary role...!?Are you the host who sets the table for collaboration and creates a safe space for everyone?Or are you maybe a trusted advisor, working quietly behind the scenes to help stakeholders make better decisions?Well, what if the answer is... both? This tension between hosting and advising is at the heart of the latest Inside Service Design episode, in which we explore the real, unpolished practice of driving change from within organizations. In this episode, we have a great conversation with two seasoned professionals, Seth Campbell and Phil LaDeur, who bring some honest perspectives to the table.Phil shares how we can create the perfect conditions for collaboration and influence by drawing inspiration from the concept of "Unreasonable Hospitality".And Seth talks about the importance of patience, humility, and the art of giving away choices to empower your team and build long-term trust. This is one of those episodes where you get a true peek behind the curtains and hear how other service design professionals are approaching their work. So, if you're ready to discover new ways that will help you move the needle inside your organization, this one is for you!I'm curious, in your current role, do you feel more like a "host" or an "advisor"? Leave a comment on the episode and let me know. I'd love to hear which role resonates more with you.Enjoy the conversation!Be well, ~ Marc--- [ 1. What if the most important spiritual formation in your child's life isn't happening at church—but at your dinner table? Today, John Heinen and Devin Schadt discuss how family dinner has quietly lost its soul—and how fathers must bring it back, not just as a routine, but as a call and obligation. The culture has shaped the dinner table into what we commonly see today on TV. It is failing at its core mission to be a cornerstone of a thriving family. This isn't about Pinterest-perfect meals or polite conversation. It's about forming identity, memory, and virtue in the chaos of real life. John and Devin share how their own families bring structure and meaning to mealtime—from the nightly “Good Thing, Difficult Thing, Random Thing” ritual to coaching kids through cleanup as a form of love and responsibility. We have Sheila with Dillons to show off some of the new snacks they have just in time for the Fourth of July. Leah Ellis with the The Society of Child Entrepreneurs to discuss this awesome organization benefiting children in the community. From there, we run down the weekend events of what's ahead and mix that in with mindless banter. It's a show by the community, for the community. So pull up a chair and join me, DJ Carbon, Annette Lawless, Live Local and The Kansas Gastronomist for some midweek fun.
Feeling stuck? Maybe you've been grinding but can't seem to break through. You want to lead, to build, to create value—but something's missing. Is it confidence? A clear path? A belief that you're even capable?Or maybe you're haunted by questions like: Why should anyone follow me?Am I really cut out for this? How do I lead when I feel like an imposter?Too many aspiring leaders and entrepreneurs feel trapped—either by a lack of direction or the weight of their own self-doubt. But what if the very thing you fear—struggle—is actually the key to building unstoppable self-esteem and long-term success?Meet Lee Benson—a man who went from being kicked out of his home in high school to selling one of his companies for nine figures. Lee didn't just build wealth—he built multi-generational value by embracing struggle, focusing on value creation, and turning pain into purpose.Lee's not your typical business guru. He's a rock musician, ultra-marathoner, CEO of eight companies, and the passionate mind behind Dinner Table, a movement to raise value-creating families and future leaders. In this episode, Lee shares:· Why most people misunderstand “imposter syndrome”· How emotional energy is the rarest and most powerful resource you have· The exact mindset that turns struggle into confidence—and confidence into legacy· Why you should stop waiting to feel ready—and start where you areThis episode is your wake-up call. If you're tired of spinning your wheels and ready to shift from fear to fulfillment, you need to hear this.Listen now—because leadership isn't something you're given. It's something you create.Quotes:• "All the opportunity in the world is in the struggle. The harder it gets, the better it is." - Lee Benson• "Everybody does what's in their best self-interest for either this life and or the next. We're either win-win, or we're win-lose." - Lee Benson• "The purpose of the human experience is to elevate human consciousness - simply said, figure stuff out." - Lee BensonKey Takeaways:· Reframe Struggle as a Tool: Start viewing struggle as the necessary path to building confidence and self-esteem. Ask yourself, “What capability is this challenge helping me develop?”· Adopt the Value Creation Lens: Before making your next move—whether in business, relationships, or personal growth—ask: “Am I truly creating value, or am I just staying busy?”· Audit Your Emotional Energy: Rate your emotional energy on a scale of 1–10 each day. Then identify what boosts it and what drains it. Begin designing your life around protecting and amplifying that energy.· Design a Personal Business Model: Whether you're employed or self-employed, write down how you create value, how you're rewarded for it, and how you can scale it. This turns abstract goals into actionable steps.· Test, Tweak, Repeat: Treat life and business decisions like experiments. Don't fear mistakes—instead, document your assumptions, test them quickly and cheaply, and use failures as feedback. Conclusion:This conversation with Lee Benson is a powerful reminder that you don't need permission to start—you just need the willingness to struggle, learn, and keep showing up. Success doesn't come from avoiding hard things—it comes from leaning into them with purpose. Whether you're a young man figuring out your path or a seasoned entrepreneur feeling stuck, this episode challenges you to rethink what's possible when you focus on creating real value—in your work, your relationships, and your life.

"It Starts at the Dinner Table," is a self help book to help 11-25 year old's to set goals and plan out their life, so that they can be successful. To often, young people drift along in life and lose too many valuable years wherein they could be productive. We fall into the 40/40/40 rule of life. What happens is our parents encourage us to get a good education in order to get a good paying job. It goes like this. We get serious about life at age 25 and work 40 hours a week for 40 years; and then retire on about 40% of our income from Social Security, and any monies that we have saved from our retirement plans. This book teaches you to get ahead of the curve by showing you how to set attainable goals. Studies show that people that write down their goals reach their goals three times more often than people who don't write down their goals. It Starts at the Dinner Table is knowledge shared by five generations of Haley's. It will help you practice simple habits over time that will help you not only be successful, but discover your destiny to impact the world! For more info on the book click HERE

Get ready for an exciting episode that blends children's literature, artistic creativity, and family empowerment! We're exploring the world of "Don't Lose Mr. Cuddles" with author Dev Petty and illustrator Mike Boldt, while also diving deep into family dynamics with Lee Benson from Dinner Table. First up, Dev and Mike take us behind the scenes of their latest children's book featuring Chip, the enthusiastic dog. They share hilarious insights into the creative process, revealing how Mike builds characters using simple shapes (did you know Chip is essentially two potato chips?) and how Dev crafts stories that make kids laugh and feel connected. The conversation sparkles with humor as they discuss the challenges of school visits, the art of illustration, and the magic of creating children's books. Mike's journey from copying Disney artists to finding his unique style is particularly inspiring, showing that creativity is about finding your own voice. But the episode doesn't stop there! Lee Benson brings a powerful message about family value creation. He introduces the Dinner Table community, a groundbreaking approach to helping families grow together. Lee's own story - rising from a challenging childhood to becoming a successful entrepreneur - is a testament to the power of perspective and community support. The key takeaways? Creativity matters. Family connections are crucial. And every child has the potential to create incredible value in the world. In this podcast episode, Dr. Ryan Rush and his host discuss the significance of mealtime in family life, focusing on the emotional, spiritual, and physical transformations that can take place when families gather around the table. Dr. Rush, who is also known as "Dinner Table Ryan," talks about his book, "Restore the Table," which advocates for the power of shared meals in fostering strong familial bonds. He explains that mealtime is one of the most impactful habits a family can adopt, and it doesn't have to involve gourmet dishes or elaborate plans to be effective. The discussion begins humorously with Dr. Rush admitting he's not much of a cook but emphasizes the importance of the shared experience over the food itself. He elaborates on the "overachieving meal" as a major mistake many families make when trying to make meals too complex, which often leads to burnout. He advocates for simplicity, recalling his mother's recipe for sloppy joes and how it became a cherished memory for him, highlighting that meals should be about togetherness rather than perfection. The conversation touches on common pitfalls families face during mealtime, such as diving too deep into heavy conversations too quickly. Dr. Rush and his host share a funny story about a dinner guest who was uncomfortable with a deep question about marriage, illustrating how it's essential to keep conversations at the table light and natural at first. They also discuss the balance between allowing deeper conversations to flow naturally and avoiding turning mealtime into an interrogation. They recommend asking open-ended questions like, "Tell me your story," to let people share at their own pace.Additionally, they talk about how mealtimes shouldn't turn into lectures, particularly for parents who might feel the need to impart lessons to their kids during meals. Instead, mealtime should be about connection and fostering an environment where everyone feels heard and loved. They recount stories of their own experiences with overly serious meal discussions and the importance of creating a joyful atmosphere around the table. The episode also addresses the distractions that modern technology, such as phones and TVs, can bring to mealtime. Dr. Rush emphasizes the importance of being fully present during family meals and advises parents to set boundaries around media use during mealtimes. They reflect on how phones, even when not actively being looked at, can still send the message that the person in front of you isn't as important as whatever might be happening on the device.Lastly, Dr. Rush and his host encourage parents to embrace the chaos of mealtime with young children, understanding that even when things get messy, the act of sitting together and sharing a meal has lasting benefits. They talk about the future regrets parents may have when their children leave home, urging families to cherish these moments before they are gone. There are many emotions and perspectives about the state of our democracy today. Podcaster Gregory Humphrey suggests that forming your home as an anchor where family and friends can unite and know that shared values will be respected is an essential way to be protected from the bombast and chaos created by Donald Trump and his administration. At his home, near a lake, the loons have returned for a spring visit, and in that annual ritual, there is a lesson to be found about keeping the faith. A lesson for us in these days when democracy is under attack.

This one is a doozy - in all of the best ways. Tracy Hooper, founder of "The Confidence Project" talks with Trish about growing up with 5 siblings and why the dinner table was so very important. She calls her mom (who sounds fabulous by the way) the "OG Talk Show Host," because come dinner, she would be checking up on everyone seated around the table. Tracy says this was truly the foundation for communication. She explains her journey to the west coast, where she ultimately began this incredible project, although it didn't start out to be what it is today. Now, through keynotes and one on one advising, even virtual labs, Tracy helps those gain more confidence in the working environment. Her keynote, "Words to Use, Words to Lose," helps those speak more confidently, efficiently, and just plain smarter. Trish says she was blown away by not only Tracy's heart for this work, but all she's doing to help teach civility. Take some notes!
