In this episode of BackTable ENT, Dr. Gopi Shah sits down with pediatric Otolaryngologist, Dr. Erynne Faucett at the University California Davis-Sacramento to discuss diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the field in Otolaryngology and its importance. --- SHOW NOTES The episode begins with Erynne breaking down what DEI means to her. She mentions how there is a misconception in grouping diversity, equity, and inclusion all together but instead needing to look at each element individually for what they mean, instead of just “checking off a check box.” Connecting to this, Erynne brings up the importance of DEI efforts in the field of Otolaryngology as it reflects the importance of patient care, in a population that is constantly evolving in diversity, and it emphasizes the role of diversifying the field to match the patient population. Focusing on DEI efforts, at UCSD-Sacramento where Erynne practices, she mentions the DEI efforts that her department has made in recruiting diverse residents and attendings. She emphasizes to continue to push the narrative for why it is important within the field and further, how it impacts patient care. Erynne then delves into DEI initiatives within the Otolaryngology workforce from her perspective of being a part of the Academy of Otolaryngology DEI committee and mentions her work in building curriculum teaching DEI for residents and the challenges that comes with it. Gopi and Erynne then end the episode talking about efforts in delivering equitable care, health equity research and recent legislative actions in certain areas of the U.S that have restricted DEI efforts. Erynne emphasizes that even in areas across the country with bans against DEI initiatives, it is still important to speak up about these issues, to continue to teach and educate policy makers to see the impact of these bans on marginalized communities and that DEI efforts aren't political but instead a human rights initiative. --- RESOURCES American Academy of Otolaryngology Advocacy: https://www.entnet.org/advocacy/ --- The BackTable ENT Podcast is a resource for otolaryngologists to learn tips, techniques, and practical advice on all things ear, nose, and throat. Building a Healthy Mindset with Erynne Erdtsieck A wellness entrepreneur, mental health advocate, and lip cancer survivor, Erynne is all too familiar with our world's battle of mental health. Watching the illness deteriorate her mother's life, Erynne's fear became a reality one morning when her mother lost her battle with mental health and took her own life. Completely devastated, Erynne promised herself her mother's battle would not be in vain. Finding the strength to go on by digging deep in educating herself and others who may be battling the mental health fight, Erynne has made it her mission to take the negative stigma behind mental health and erase the negative image that people have with those words so that other families won't go through what she and her family have gone through. When Covid hit in 2020 and lockdowns became mandatory, Erynne witnessed how our nation's mental health was affected. Watching people not go outside, not converse, stop taking care of themselves, and fall into deep depression while suicide rates were rising, Erynne knew she wanted to be a resource for others to feel good again. It would also be around this time that Erynne would be rechallenged as she learned she was battling the early stages of lip cancer. With few resources out there to protect herself from the disease, Erynne started to research lip glosses with SPF and found none out there but one. Not satisfied with the selection and seeing the struggles with mental health, Erynne would go on to create Mental Skincare – a beauty and apparel brand that helps others embrace their dark side and bring light to the conversations about mental health! Now, Erynne uses her voice and influence to scream from the rooftops, "REACH OUT!" as a sign for others to know that they are NOT alone and that there are resources to help them get through the dark times in life. Listen in as Erynne, and I discuss how overcoming some of life's darkest moments and finding a hole in the marketplace would lead her to create a beauty brand that helps others see the beauty in their darkness and how refusing to give up, even in her darkest hour, led her to find a way to FEARLESS HAPPYNESS!
I have said from the beginning that one of the first skills a witch really needs to learn is energy work. Energy is in everything; everything has energy, gives off energy, and is fueled by energy. Energy is the basis for the magick we weave, the spells we cast, and the way we connect with the world around us. Knowing how you perceive and interact with the energy of the world around you is a critical skill for anyone wanting to develop a witchcraft practice, and so today, we're finally gonna talk about it.Today's episode is brought to you by all our wonderful supporters on Patreon, who help keep this show going even when we take unscheduled breaks for life events like parenting and getting married. I recently sat down with Dr. Erynne Gilpin for a fascinating and winding conversation about the shaping of her life's work, which is hard to sum up with one or a few words. Erynne, who is of mixed Cree-Métis and Filipina/Celtic ancestry, is a community wellness researcher, activist, artist, birth doula, educator, filmmaker, founder of Indigenous Womxn Climb, and post-doctoral researcher. Her current work focuses on Indigenous wellness pedagogy, climate action, land-based leadership, embodied governance, insurgent healing, and land/water-based wellness. We cover a lot of ground in this episode, from her passion of rock climbing and traditional beadwork to doula birthwork and her desire to use filmmaking to bring about indigenous transformation. Erynne is the newest instructor to join Pacific Rim College Online, where she teaches a course entitled “Indigenous Land Protocol in Medicinal Harvesting”. We explore the significance of this course to her and the importance of sharing this information to the world at this critical time. Listen all the way through to the end of this podcast, or check the show notes, for links to this course. There is so much more that we discuss as there seems to be no end to what Erynne has to offer. Tune in and learn how her knowledge of place, past, and emergence can inspire you. Erynne is an almost lifelong Alaskan, minus a short stint in Maryland after college where she decided she didn’t like people as much as she thought she did and couldn’t live around millions of them. She’s a single mom of two kids and spends most of her time picking up stale goldfish from her car.
