Special guest Pastor Gareth Gilpin speaks from Genesis 26.

Michael Gilpin had an interest aviation at a young age but had never pursued flying. He joined the Army with an option to pursue Officer Candidate School near the end of his college years. Even as he became an officer and started training, he was still in the infantry.But soon he would switch to pilot training - specifically helicopter pilot training. He deployed to Vietnam in 1971 as a Huey pilot bringing Air Cavalry personnel in and out of combat.In this edition of Veterans Chronicles, Col. Gilpin shares his first thoughts of Vietnam and offers more detail on the missions he was part of. He also focuses on two particular missions: one where his Huey crashed and another where he and his team were tasked with helping to rescue American personnel held prisoner by the enemy.Later, Gilpin tells us about  the solemn duty he had to meet the remains of a childhood friend and bring them home. And he tells us about the powerful encounter he had in an airport while on that assignment.Plus, he recalls his return to Vietnam decades later and both the positive and negative experiences that came with that trip.

CASA volunteers—who must be at least 21, pass a background check, and complete 35 hours of initial training along with ongoing education—meet weekly with the children on their cases to understand their needs, ensure their environments are safe, and build supportive relationships, whether at home, at the zoo, or even at a child’s sporting events. Send a textIn the 20th century, segregation in Colorado prevented many Black artists and families from staying at hotels, eating in restaurants and finding respite. A little known plot of land in Gilpin County called Lincoln Hills was the only place many African Americans could go for this.At the time, Lincoln Hills was the only leisure destination west of the Mississippi owned by and made for Black Americans. Artists like Duke Ellington, Langston Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston spent time communing and creating here to get away from segregation and find peace in the Colorado Mountains.For Black History month, Mountain-Ear reporter Mindy Leary is writing a series of profiles covering the time these artists spent at the Gilpin County refuge. The organization currently hosts programs in Denver, Boulder, Durango, Sterling, Aurora, and other Colorado communities.The program is heading into its second year of funding, and the organization has brought on Lindsay Gianola as Gilpin's Peer Recovery Coach. As a resident with lived experience in active and sustained recovery, she will meet participants in the program, share her experience, and guide and support them. She grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan, before pursuing degrees at Colorado State University (CSU).During her time there, she moved into a home filled with toxic mold, which made her ill. She moved into a rental with deodorizers in every room, but knew this was not a long-term option.After graduating from CSU with an MA in cultural anthropology and a graduate certificate in women's studies in 2005, she decided to move to a cleaner, less-toxic area.She has since lived just outside Gilpin, also serving as a shamanic healing practitioner for Wisdom Hearth in Nederland. She loves the people, the community, and the connection to nature that they share and embrace.She has written since elementary school, writing a play in 4th grade, bringing her friends in to perform it, and charging her neighbors five cents to see the performance. Government-guaranteed lending requires special expertise and back-office functionality that grows increasingly expensive for smaller banks. On the latest episode of the ABA Banking Journal Podcast — sponsored by Bix2x — Chris Hurn and Jeremy Gilpin of Community Bankshares, a bank holding company in La Grange, Georgia, discuss how they are tackling that challenge. “To start one of these departments is very expensive for a lot of rural banks and credit unions,” says Gilpin, “It's very prohibitive to enter the market space if you are a rural bank or even in an urban market where you do you know, maybe 5, 10, 20 of these loans a year.” Hurn and Gilpin are part of a team that has built Community Bankshares, parent of Community Bank and Trust of West Georgia, into a network of Small Business Administration and U.S. Department of Agriculture lending subsidiaries that work on a nationwide basis. They developed a model that allows the “the holding company [to] serve as a source of strength for the bank, not just the other way around, which is typical,” says Gilpin. Gilpin and Hurn discuss the company's role as a white label lender, referral lender, participation partner or servicer for smaller banks that want to connect their clients to guaranteed loans and the strength of the bank model for supporting these businesses and agricultural enterprises.
