In 1973, there was huge cultural event called, "The Battle of the Sexes." It was a tennis match between 55-year-old, Bobby Riggs, a former Wimbledon and U.S. champion, and 29-year-old, Billy Jean King, who had won multiple Grand Slam championships. Their match was in response to the woman's liberation movement and King's push for equal pay and respect for women's sports. Riggs said even though he was old and "washed," he could still beat King in her prime. He was wrong. King beat him in straight sets. Well, that "battle" pales in comparison to the battle of the sexes being played out in today's culture. Men and women, especially in the dating world, are at each other's throats. So, in this 3-part series of podcasts, Roy Biancalana, our host, tries to resolve the conflict by discussing the real meaning of masculine and feminine. This episode is part two of the series, and since it's dropping near Father's Day, it explores: · 3 kinds of masculine energy; · How to bring "father" energy whether you're a biological father or not; · Growing beyond "faker" masculine energy to be truly authentic and generative; · And what to do when you meet a real fucker, the toxic version masculinity. These and other important issues are explored in this episode, so don't miss it! Movie of the Year: 2006Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull StoryThe Tristram Shandy Podcast Opens the 2006 BracketThe Tristram Shandy podcast episode kicks off our brand new 2006 bracket on Movie of the Year. After crowning our way through 1971, the Taste Buds turn to a fresh film year. Moreover, we start with one of the strangest comedies of the decade. Michael Winterbottom's Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story is a film about making a film of an unfilmable book. Consequently, it makes a perfect launch title for a show that loves movies about movies. In this episode, Ryan, Mike, and Greg dig into metafiction, gender, and the prickly chemistry between Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon. Additionally, two new segments make their debut. Above all, we want to set the tone for a wild 2006 season.About the FilmLaurence Sterne published The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman in nine volumes between 1759 and 1767. The novel is famous for being playful, digressive, and nearly impossible to adapt. Notably, the narrator barely manages to get himself born across hundreds of pages. Winterbottom and his team turned that problem into the whole joke. As a result, the movie follows a fictional crew trying to film the book. Steve Coogan plays a vain version of himself, plus Tristram and his father, Walter. Meanwhile, Rob Brydon plays a needling version of himself and Uncle Toby. The screenplay carries the pseudonym "Martin Hardy," although Frank Cottrell-Boyce actually wrote it. Furthermore, the cast includes Keeley Hawes, Shirley Henderson, Dylan Moran, Naomie Harris, Kelly Macdonald, and Jeremy Northam. Gillian Anderson and Stephen Fry also appear as heightened versions of themselves. You can read more at Wikipedia or the original Roger Ebert review. This is the first film episode of our 2006 season. To explore the wider bracket project, visit the Movie of the Year archive. If you enjoy this Tristram Shandy podcast deep dive, our A Clockwork Orange episode from the 1971 run pairs nicely with this conversation about cinematic form.Want to hear how the season began? Start with our 2006 season intro, then dig into the 2006 bracket reveal before this episode.Metafiction and the Unfilmable NovelMetafiction sits at the center of our first discussion. Sterne wrote a novel that constantly reminds you it is a novel. Similarly, Winterbottom built a movie that keeps reminding you it is a movie. The crew breaks the fourth wall, argues about the script, and screens its own dailies. Therefore, the film becomes a hall of mirrors about storytelling itself. The Taste Buds ask a simple question. How do you adapt a book that mocks the idea of adaptation? Furthermore, we trace the lineage from Sterne to modern self-aware comedies. Films like Adaptation and Day for Night come up as obvious cousins. Ultimately, we argue that Winterbottom found the only honest solution. He filmed the failure instead of the book. Consequently, the movie respects Sterne by refusing to tame him.The Battle of the Sexes on ScreenNext, we turn to gender and how the film portrays men and women. The male characters chase status, sex, and screen time with comic desperation. Coogan, in particular, frets about his shoe lifts and his billing. Meanwhile, the women in the film often hold the real power. Kelly Macdonald plays Jenny, who grounds Coogan with calm clarity. Naomie Harris plays Jennie, a production assistant who runs circles around the panicking men. Gillian Anderson arrives late and instantly reshapes the production. By contrast, the men flail and posture. So the Taste Buds debate a thorny point. Does the movie satirize male ego, or does it quietly indulge it? Additionally, we weigh how the battle of the sexes plays inside an 18th-century story. The novel and the film both poke fun at male pride. As a result, the gender comedy spans two very different centuries.Coogan and Brydon Anchor the Tristram Shandy PodcastAbove all, the Coogan and Brydon double act drives this Tristram Shandy podcast conversation. The two comedians play exaggerated, petty versions of themselves. Their rivalry over billing, teeth, and impressions fuels the funniest scenes. Notably, this dynamic later powered the beloved series The Trip. The Taste Buds dig into why their friction feels so real. Brydon needles, Coogan bristles, and the comedy snaps into focus. Furthermore, we discuss how improvisation shapes their banter. The closing Al Pacino impression duel becomes a highlight. Meanwhile, we ask whether the pair actually like each other on screen. The answer stays gloriously unclear. Consequently, their chemistry gives a chilly intellectual film a warm, human pulse.Rushmore: The Mount Rushmore of 2006 TelevisionOur Rushmore segment asks each host to carve a Mount Rushmore of 2006 television. The year was loaded with future classics. For instance, The Wire aired its acclaimed fourth season. Meanwhile, The Office, 30 Rock, and Friday Night Lights were all finding their feet. Additionally, prestige newcomers like Dexter and Heroes premiered to big buzz. The hosts each pick four shows and defend their choices. Naturally, the debate gets heated fast. Listen to the episode to hear which four faces each Taste Bud sets in stone.I Never Metacritic I Didn't LikeThis episode debuts a brand new game called "I Never Metacritic I Didn't Like." The premise is simple and a little dangerous. We pull up a film's Metacritic profile and put the critical consensus on trial. Specifically, we test whether the aggregate score matches our own gut reactions. Tristram Shandy earned strong reviews from critics on release. However, strong scores do not always survive a Taste Buds cross-examination. Therefore, the game lets us argue with the wider critical record in real time. Expect this segment to return throughout the 2006 season. Above all, it gives us a structured excuse to fight about numbers. Why Tristram Shandy Still MattersTristram Shandy still matters because it cracked a problem that had defeated everyone before it. Winterbottom proved you can film an unfilmable book by filming the attempt. Moreover, the movie launched a now-legendary comic partnership. The Coogan and Brydon collaboration grew into The Trip and its many sequels. Additionally, the film remains a sharp, funny lesson in adaptation. Film students and Sterne scholars both still cite it today. Ultimately, the Tristram Shandy 2006 podcast discussion shows why this small comedy punches far above its weight. Notably, it kicks our 2006 bracket off with brains and mischief.Related Episodes from Movie of the Year: 2006The 2006 season is just getting started, so this list will grow each week. Has there always been only two genders? Or have there been societies, including in the Western world, where additional genders were recognized? A recent study by Matteo Winkler shows that many cultures throughout history, including Western cultures, did not necessarily conceive of sex and gender as binary. This comes at a time when an Italian court dismissed a case demanding the recognition of one of its citizens as non-binary, saying that in the Italian legal system there is no sex or gender beyond male and female. We're still Demi-sexual here on Mixed Bag, and this time we look at the film infamous for inadvertently leading to the 2022 Oscars Slap: G. I. Jane. "In response to political pressure from Senator Lillian DeHaven, the U.S. Navy begins a program that would allow for the eventual integration of women into its combat services. The program begins with a single trial candidate, Lieutenant Jordan O'Neil, who is chosen specifically for her femininity. O'Neil enters the grueling Navy SEAL training program under the command of Master Chief John James Urgayle, who unfairly pushes O'Neil until her determination wins his respect." (Sourced from Letterboxd). We talk about whether this film really goes into the true horrors faced by women in the military, what G. I. even means and why all three of us thought that the final scene of this film was implying a surprise gay twist. Plus, we talk through some of our recent watches: short discussions of The Sheep Detectives, Caterpillar, Cover Up, Magellan, My Cousin Rachel (2017), Battle of the Sexes (2017), Misericordia (2024), True Grit (2010) and Obsession. Jamie and Matt offer their defence of Peter Hujar's Day, while Cass still thinks it is exquisitely boring. In the TV world, we talk Wie is de Mol?, Survivor and Ready Gamer Mum. And Jamie grants Rita Bullwinkel honorary trans status in admiration of her short story series Belly Up.

What happens when you mix trivia, competition, and a healthy dose of gender stereotypes? Absolute chaos. In this first-ever Battle of the Sexes showdown, CannCon, Cam Cooksey, Jon Herold, Ashe in America, Christy Lupo, and Jackie Espada square off in a game of wit, guessing, and questionable logic. With points on the line and punishments hanging in the balance, the group dives into a two-part game featuring classic trivia and a hilariously confusing “describe it poorly” challenge. Along the way, the banter flies, alliances form, and the debate over who really knows the opposite sex gets… spirited. It is competitive, chaotic, and way more revealing than anyone expected.

About This EpisodeIn this guest episode I sit down with Professor Marc J. Defant, Professor of Geology and Geochemistry whose work spans the physical sciences and evolutionary psychology.Recently he published a peer-reviewed paper in Sexuality & Culture titled “Evolutionary Psychology and the Crisis of Empirical Rigor in Feminist Studies” - https://rdcu.be/eOkjZThe paper argues that much of modern feminist scholarship is ideology and not grounded in any truth. Professor Defant and I discuss how social constructivism has created confusion about relationships, work, masculinity, and femininity. We explore human evolution, parental investment theory, cross-cultural studies of mate selection preferences, and much more.Listen in to learn how feminism might have broken an old template but has gone too far in denying human nature, why suppressing sex differences actually clarifies them more, the real roots of the pay gap, and what's really going on between men and women today.Get in touch with Professor Marc J. Tomás Bogardus joins to discuss his book "The Nature of the Sexes" and argues for a reproductive-functional account of biological sex. According to Bogardus, males and females are defined by the reproductive function their bodies are structured to perform: producing sperm or eggs. Even when that function is not realized and no sperm or eggs are produced, a person's sex remains the same, because it is grounded in biological organization. To defend this view, Bogardus considers intersex and DSD cases, critiques contextualist accounts that treat sex as domain-dependent, and argues for a unified meaning of “male” and “female.” The conversation later turns to whether sex is essential or changeable, as well as debates about pronouns, sports, and medical interventions for minors.[00:00] Introduction to the Debate on Sex[00:23] The Delivery Room Thought Experiment: "It's a Boy/Girl"[02:04] Sex as Reproductive Function[07:41 ]Gametes, Competitor Theories, and the Non-Producers Objection[11:29] Intersex & DSD Cases[19:23] Contextualism and Cluster Concepts: Sex in Sports, Bathrooms, Dating?[26:23] Conjunction Reduction & Animal Examples: Rooster vs Crocodile[30:24] One Unified Meaning of Sex Terms[32:06] Are ‘Man' and ‘Woman' Social Roles or Biological Sexes?[37:15] Is Sex Essential or Contingent? There's a long-held idea that autism is more prevalent in boys than girls—the CDC says it's three times as common. But a growing body of research suggests the reality is more complicated. In a new study, researchers tracked autism diagnoses in millions of Swedish people born from 1985 to 2022. They found that the prevalence of autism is actually pretty even across the sexes, but people with “female” stamped on their birth certificate are often diagnosed later in life. Host Flora Lichtman speaks with epidemiologist Caroline Fyfe about what this study teaches us about the prevalence of autism. Then, psychology researcher Rachel Moseley, an autistic woman herself, shares how late and missed diagnoses can affect autistic people. Guests: Dr. Caroline Fyfe is an epidemiologist at the University of Edinburgh who studied sex differences in autism diagnoses. Dr. Rachel Moseley is a researcher in psychology at Bournemouth University in the UK, studying the experiences of autistic adults.Transcripts for each episode are available within 1-3 days at sciencefriday.com. Hour 4 kicks off with a chaotic Battle of the Sexes trivia game—complete with wrong answers, tiebreakers, and a hilariously cheap Dollar Tree “prize pack.” The front page turns wild when RFK Jr., now HHS Secretary, goes viral after admitting he once snorted cocaine off a toilet seat, followed by a shocking study about toxic chemicals found in hair extensions marketed to Black women, and warnings about Valentine’s romance scams. In sports, Rock‑T breaks down Winter Olympics standings and shares an explosive, profanity‑laced rant from Seattle Seahawks linebacker Ernest Jones. Brat returns with Hot Spot drama as Too Short comments on Nicki Minaj and politics, celebs mixing activism with artistry, and Bow Wow revealing he turned down Big Momma’s House 3 after Ice Cube advised him not to wear a dress.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Some of the most misunderstood and emotionally charged topics for men are: attraction, compatibility, and what actually creates lasting connection with a woman. My guest, Laurin Ponce, helps us break down the difference between compatibility, connection, and chemistry - and why confusing those three is where most relationships go off the rails. We talk about what women truly find attractive in a grounded man, what it really means when a woman asks for space, why it feels like there are more rules for men, and how respect is built long before it's ever given. From attachment styles and masculine frame to why women's touch is medicine and how peace and respect create a relationship where both people feel safe and free, this conversation cracks open the unspoken dynamics most men are trying to navigate alone. We also explore the practical side: non-negotiables, testing for compatibility, shared values, money, day-to-day living, and why partners are often mirrors and triggers for our own unresolved work. Laurin and I get into anxious versus avoidant dynamics, masculinity and femininity in modern relationships, emotional expression in men, vulnerability, physical attraction, and how connection is built - and rebuilt - over time SHOW HIGHLIGHTS 00:00 - Understanding Men and Women 01:07 - Is There a Line in "Figuring Each Other Out"? 03:22 - Masculine and Feminine Polarity 05:08 - The Bowl and the Water Analogy 06:46 - Why Respect Starts With Self-Respect 08:21 - Non-Negotiables in Relationships 10:05 - Compatibility vs. Chemistry 13:18 - Core Values and Relationship Dealbreakers 14:58 - You Can't Out-Love Incompatibility 17:16 - Chemistry vs. Trauma Bonds 18:46 - What Real Chemistry Feels Like 19:29 - Peace and Respect in Relationships 22:47 - Creating Emotional Safety 26:52 - Masculine and Feminine Imbalance Today 30:30 - Polarity Always Finds Its Way 33:41 - Letting Go of Armor and Control 35:16 - Becoming the Partner You Want to Attract 39:13 - Consistency and Trust 40:10 - Physical Attraction and Discipline 43:02 - Connection Is Built Over Time 46:37 - Scarcity Mindset in Dating 48:02 - Where Men Should Start in Long-Term Relationships 50:32 - Rekindling Attraction and Intentionality 57:12 - "Cracking the Code" of Your Partner 01:00:29 - Never Get Comfortable in Love 01:05:05 - Serving Each Other Without Shame 01:06:23 - Where to Find Laurin's Work Battle Planners: Pick yours up today!
