In this episode, I interview Sabrina Strings, PhD and author of the incredibly important book Fearing The Black Body, The Racial Origins of Fat Phobia. Through her research, she seeks to answer the question of " Why do we all, but especially white women, so badly want to be thin?" If you have ever wondered why, this episode is for you. What she discovered and shares about in this episode will blow your mind. The pressure we put on women to look a certain way is centuries old with roots in racism and religion and has always been a form of social control and oppression. Sabrina Strings is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Irvine, and a recipient of the Berkeley Chancellor's Postdoctoral Fellowship, where she held appointments in the Department of Sociology and the School of Public Health at the University of California, Berkeley. Love Your Bodd received it's first letter from a STRANGER! In the intro, Heather explains why this meant so much to her. SELF DOUBT IS SO REAL, Y'ALL. This week on Love Your Bodd, Heather interviews a chika with a very similar story to her own. Sabrina opens up about her weight fluctuation, depression, and turning to food for comfort. Food is still a struggle for her but that doesn't mean she's not healthy! Another important topic Sabrina opens up about is how you can become obsessed with "being healthy." Working out TOO MUCH. Eating the same strict meals day in and day out. She encourages people to shop around and find what works for them and to make it FUN and not a chore. And to not torture yourself and your body by obsessively working out. She had her wake up call though, which you will hear about.
