Biya Simbassa took many American track and field fans by surprise on Sunday morning when they awoke to results from the Valencia Marathon and saw that the 31-year-old notched a personal best by nearly four minutes to run 2:06:53. The performance was good for 17th place in the race but moved him to No. 4 on the U.S. all-time list. Only Khalid Khannouchi (2:05:38), Galen Rupp (2:06:07) and Ryan Hall (2:06:17) have run faster. Back in 2022, we paid a visit to Flagstaff, Ariz. for a video featuring Simbassa and also recorded a podcast episode detailing his career path from being born in Ethiopia, moving to the United States in 2007 and then going through the school system. He started running in high school in Minnesota and then continued his development at Iowa Central Community College before transferring to Oklahoma. After graduating, he was coached by Scott Simmons in Colorado Springs before signing a pro contract with Under Armour to be part of the Dark Sky Distance Project with coach Stephen Haas. In 2023, Simbassa started working with Hall as his coach. The partnership lasted until this summer before Hall decided to step back from coaching. Simbassa worked with Ian Carter (a McKirdy Trained coach, who also was coached by Hall) for the Valencia Marathon build-up. CITIUS MAG spoke with Simbassa on Thursday afternoon to get details on how the performance came about. This is part three of a three-part story. Julia is an Argentinian woman. As a child, she dreamt of coming to the US to further her education and experience all she had seen on TV and read in books. He path was to become a hard-working au pair as a way to financially make ends meet. She also loved children of all ages. For a while, everything fell into place. She tried dating sites and met American men. One stood out as a man she could imagine marrying one day. He took his time before he showed his true self. That's when his control tactics kicked in and everything went horribly wrong. You will see how easily we can become duped by a narcissist — no matter where in the world we come from. They are practiced individuals who take their time to get to know us before they strike. Julia's story has taken three episodes to tell properly. It's a powerful narrative to share with high school and college students. I got an email from longtime 3 Booker Bo Boswell who told me he found an enticingly-titled thread on reddit called “What's your field or study (hobbyist or professional) and what's a cornerstone beginners book for that topic/field?” The most upvoted reply on the thread read: "Librarian here, Susan Orlean's ‘The Library Book' is at first glance a true-crime book about tracking the arsonist who set fire and burned down the main library in Los Angeles, but it also gives a comprehensive glimpse into contemporary libraries and their issues, especially updating a view of them if you haven't been inside one since you were a kid." Bo picked up the book, loved it, and then wrote to me that "the amount of research and bizarre detail Orlean puts into her work is so engrossing.” Bizarre detail! I was convinced. I picked up ‘The Library Book' and it blew me away. Reading it was like … wandering a library. Surprising curiosity trails at every turn. I ended up putting the book in my Best Of 2023 and then went deeper into Susan Orlean's back catalog where I found myself reading profiles like ‘The American Man, Age 10' and a series of fascinating but unconventional obituaries about people like the inventor of Hawaiian Tropic or the first magician on the Las Vegas strip. I've come to think of Susan Orlean as one of the best non-fiction writers on the planet. She's been a Staff Writer for ‘The New Yorker' since 1992 and has written more than 10 bestselling books including ‘The Library Book', ‘On Animals', ‘Saturday Night', and ‘The Orchid Thief', which was turned into the movie ‘Adaptation', starring Meryl Streep in her Oscar-nominated role as … yes, Susan Orlean. Susan has an endless, unbridled curiosity — that ‘bizarre detail' — which you'll see on full display in this conversation which begins by talking about how she organizes her shoes! She's a writer's writer who offers us a true masterclass and always reminds us that “storytelling and knowledge-sharing is the essential human experience.” We talk about organizing shoes and spices, what books do that nothing else does, finding the balance between professional and amateur, the genius of container ships, what great book design does, how to cultivate your writing voice, how you might organize your book, facing the fear of failure, LSD, the power of libraries, Susan's 3 most formative books, and much, much more… I am so excited to share this conversation and hope you'll find it as endlessly inspiring, thoughtful as I did. Let's jump into Chapter 134 of 3 Books now…

You will get older, uglier, and fatter with each year. Soon you will notice young women no longer take your flirtations seriously. Your sloth and social detachment will worsen until people don't even bother to be polite around you. You will gradually lower your standards in what you want in a girl until desperation pushes you to marry a dumpy oinker well past her prime. You will rut with her once a week, then once a month, then holidays only. You will relieve yourself drearily masturbating in the middle of the night by the cold flickering light of your computer monitor while that bloated seacow who doesn't give a shit for your desires snores in the bed you can no longer get a good night's sleep in. Your one shred of solace will come from knowing your depreciating asset – A.K.A. wife – will have as few options as you do virtually guaranteeing lifelong fidelity. ... And then, finally, the Grim Reaper will steal your last breath and you will disappear from the world as if you had never been here and when they bury you no one will really notice and no one will really care because in your whole life you never never never, not even once, stepped off the hamster wheel and did anything courageous or interesting or different. And it will be too late when you realize that the chains clasped to your ankles and wrists were unlocked all along and you were always free to go.

With all that sweet, sweet awareness that The Sound of Freedom drummed up, and for good reason, we're going to address the elephant in the room. Pornography, for the average American Man, is one of the central causes for demoralization. We recognize that there is evil in the world when we consider Human Trafficking, but we turn a different eye to the porn in our households. Even the coming of age stories from many of our childhoods includes a scene where one of the main character's "friends" hides a smut mag. So when it comes to porn and the demoralization it produces, the solution is to act, with impunity if necessary. Kill it, remove it from your life, as if your life depended on it. As it just might someday. Support the REDACTED Culture Cast at redactedculture.locals.comSSP and boutique products at redactedllc.comFollow us on Instagram at @redactedllc
Robert Machoian is an independent American filmmaker who continues to stun with a body of work that is emotionally shocking, and at times, darkly comedic. His previous film, The Killing of Two Lovers, stands as one of the towering achievements of modern American indie filmmaking, and it's with that strength and the fortitude of low budget filmmaking that he turns the story of a man trying to do the right thing for his family into a darkly comedic tragedy with The Integrity of Joseph Chambers. Robert collaborates once more with Clayne Crawford, with Clayne playing the titular character. Joseph is a skewed version of David from The Killing of Two Lovers: dedicated to his family and their safety, yet unlike David, he is filled with a pride and misguided machismo that he believes will be enough to support his family in the event that there is some kind of massive event where food or supplies are no longer widely available. Yet, while on the surface this may seem to narratively be a COVID-adjacent film, The Integrity of Joseph Chambers instead explores the meaning of masculinity in America, and just like Two Lovers, it shows a nation on the precipice of violence. Here, the violence is not delivered with purpose, instead it's a mishap, a soul-breaking act of accidental mayhem. Integrity sits on the shoulders of Clayne, but it's buoyed by two performances that bookmark the film: at its opening is Jordana Brewster as Joseph's with Tess, where she is given a wealth of character development to work with in a short period of time compared to that famous series she's part of; and then at its close, Jeffrey Dean Morgan portrays a police chief, with Jeffrey delivering a stoic and empathetic performance that closes the film in a devastating manner. In the midst of this is a performance from Michael Raymond-James which is best described as one delivered with a resignation that hints at the desolate future that America faces as it continues to struggle with an epidemic of violence. To be clear, The Integrity of Joseph Chambers is not a film that explores in depth America's relationship with guns or violence, but rather seeks to recontextualise and examine what the 'modern American man' actually is, and just how is someone who realistically should not own a gun, let alone shoot one, supposed to manage in a society that almost dictates the need to have one. It's this discussion point that Robert talks about the most in this interview, recorded ahead of The Integrity of Joseph Chambers launch at Perth's Revelation Film Festival. Integrity screens on July 14 and 15, and tickets are available via RevelationFilmFest.org. Make sure to listen to the previous discussion with Robert, where he talked about being influenced by Kelly Reichardt, on TheCurb.com.au. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week, Dr. Mark McDonald is back on the show, and as per usual, we aren't shying away from spicy topics. Mark has a wonderful Substack where I found two pieces recently that we dive into. "The Disappearance of the American Man" and "Why American Women Are Undatable". Broadly, men have become lazy, apathetic, unhealthy, and unwilling to go out and date. Why is this? Why are testosterone levels so low? Does it have anything to do with the feminization of the United States? How did what happened in 2020 impact this? Does the fact that many women are mentally unstable, narcissistic, angry, and undateable? When did this phenomenon happen? How is it all related? We get into ALL of this. Towards the end, we discuss the depression that many people feel in December and how that can be conquered.
