This week on the second biggest podcast in the Pacific Northwest behind only The Sasquatch Hunters, we welcome back esteemed Business Over Beer alumni, Bill Cohen of Cohen Caregiving Support Consultants, and Joey Yourchek of Elfin Services. Bill provides support to family caregivers of patients with Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia and Elfin Services is a professional caregiving service offering, among other things, in home care to patients with Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia. Alzheimer's Disease remains a top 5 cause of death in the United States with no cure and no treatment, and mental health is becoming an increasingly more important issue for our overall health and wellness, especially in the time of COVID-19. Our goal is to increase awareness of the seriousness of Alzheimer's and Dementia and to keep mental health at the the forefront of health and wellness conversations. But we still manage to have a good time, even talking about heavy topics like this, and with Bill and Joey, it's hard not to have a good time. Business Over Beer will be donating a portion of our October Patreon proceeds to help fight Dementia and Alzheimer's Disease. Prost! In this episode: Joey Started working with seniors as a fiduciary for a bank, where he enjoyed the relationships with Seniors before landing at Elfin Services as Business Administrator After being the primary caregiver for his mom while she battled Alzheimer's, Bill started a post retirement career, providing resources for family caregivers to help reduce their stress, coordinate with the healthcare and other service providers, and assist with self care, a resource that did not exist when he was in position of caregiving. 2 out of 3 are women who suffer from dementia. There are still no real definitive answers as to who and why people get dementia. As with many other health issues, lifestyle factors are the best preventative medicine for Dementia; gut health and heart health are good for brain health. Keeping an active brain throughout life can also be beneficial in prevention or in delaying the onset of Dementia, things like taking up a language, learning an instrument, and doing puzzles. One theory about what causes Dementia is that people who overuse their brain power could that be a contributing factor. If you've seen one case of dementia, you've seen one case of dementia. Every case is unique. Best practices are like everything else. There are times to ignore or break the rules. The anti-pattern we cover in this episode results from not doing so. The poltergeist anti-pattern occurs when we have a bunch of infrastructure code that serves the design but is otherwise useless. When you are creating methods and classes solely as place-holders or pass-throughs, then you are feeding this anti-pattern. Defining the Poltergeist Anti-Pattern Once again, I found the best definition for our purposes in a blog article about anti-patterns. [Click Here to See The Page] "Useless classes with no real responsibility of their own, often used to just invoke methods in another class or add an unneeded layer of abstraction." You might think of these sort of methods or classes as "filler" much like the stuff in boxes when you are shipped an object that could bounce around in its package. However, shipping filler provides more value. The challenge is that there might be a fine line between short methods and poltergeists in your thinking. In that case, you can find guidance in this post, discussion, and comments. Design To Taste The most common source of the poltergeist anti-pattern is a designer that grabs a template or best practice intended for much larger systems. We see this when a student comes out of college into the real world and has a bad habit of including unneeded programming concepts. It is almost like a Golden Hammer or Boat Anchor situation. Instead of code or a product being treated as the perfect fit, this time the culprits are design concepts. For example, designing for flexibility that will never be used. We see this when a system is designed to plug-and-play with the database back end yet there will never be any database used outside of the original decision. We do not need to create flexibility when it is not used. Understand The Cost All design decisions include trade-offs. Think about it for a minute. A hard-coded, brute force solution is almost always going to be the fastest one. There is less for the computer to process. A simple example may help. Let's think about a program to add 3 to 5 and print out the result. In pseudocode you can probably write it like this: output(3+5) The computer will parse the expression (3+5), execute it and print out the result. A prettier, but slower example might look like this: Function outputSum (x, y) { z = x + y output(z) return } x = 3 y = 5 outputSum(x, y) While both approaches give you the results, one is faster to write and execute. If you do not need to use that "outputSum" function anywhere else, then why write it? This thought process is exactly the one we need to avoid a poltergeist. While we ask ourselves whether a block of source that is repeated should be abstracted to a method or function, there also should be a question whether a method is needed if it only is called once.
The next anti-pattern we look at is the golden hammer. It is another situation that seems to come up often. Thus, it is one we need to keep an eye out for in order to avoid it. Defining the Golden Hammer Anti-Pattern This time we steal the definition from Investopedia to help highlight how pervasive this anti-pattern is. Note that software is not even implied in the definition. [Click Here to See The Page] "Golden hammer is excessive dependence on a specific tool to perform many different functions. In investing it is when a trader depends on one particular analysis tool or viewpoint to make all decisions. Golden hammers also happen in the business world when a company uses a single demographic or analytics to make strategic decisions. For example, give a corporation's management team a hammer, and everything around them appears to be a nail." While the label Golden Hammer is colorful, I often see this referred to as Maslow's hammer as well. When you consider his specialty was psychology, this anti-pattern seems more global in application. Good Vs. Golden This pattern is considered a bad habit because of the application and not the tool. That is important to remember when correcting a situation where this anti-pattern exists. A hammer can be the best tool for several problems. However, there are also many where it is less useful or even destructive. The critical point to consider in examining this anti-pattern is whether a different tool is better for the job. There will be a cost to learning or acquiring that other tool. Nevertheless, it will be a worthwhile investment. We Always Did It That Way There are many red flags that a golden hammer exists but none more so than the quote "we have always done it that way." When you are not sure why a tool is used other than "just because" then you should stop and review using it. The cure for this ailment is, of course, expanding the tools at your disposal. That is why we focus on building better developers by pushing an expanding number of skills. When you have more options readily available, you are more likely to choose the best one.
