Every game has historical moments where a player or players are so in the zone that they perform amazing feats. Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger's sack for Notre Dame, Team USA Hockey winning Olympic Gold in 1980, baseball's Ron Necciai throwing a nine-inning no-hitter with 27 strikeouts, and basketball's Wilt Chamberland's 100 point game. Coach Johnson created a special moment like Coach Devine for Rudy, he made J-Mac's dream come true when he put him in his first basketball game. What happened in the last few minutes of that final game which honored seniors was nothing less than a miracle. It has been just over 15 years since this incredible story touched those across the world. It’s a story that has stuck with us ever since it first made national news so we had to hear it from the man himself. Jason McElwain is in the house today to share his journey and the best part is it’s truly just getting started. J-Mac was diagnosed with autism at the age of 3 and was told that he would never walk or talk. He overcame all odds and had a strong love for the game of basketball. Admired and respected by both coaches and teammates alike,he was named team manager at Greece Athena High School where he gladly accepted the position to do anything he could to help better the team. The last game of the regular season he was rewarded for his hard work and got an opportunity to play. J-Mac was “hot as a pistol” and scored 20 points in 4 minutes including six 3-pointers. His performance became a national story that was both emotional and inspirational. He won an ESPY award to go along with many other accolades. J-Mac to this day still puts the team before any of his fame which shows the coach in him. He currently is coaching high school basketball, and is an accomplished runner, author, and speaker. There truly is nothing J-Mac doesn’t do.Our time with J-Mac was incredible. We really enjoyed hearing about that amazing 20-point night and everything he has done since. He has been such an inspiration to the autism community and many others across the world. J-Mac continues to to follow his passion and we can’t wait to see whats in store next.Thank you Jason McElwain! Please support J-Mac and checkout his book “The Game of My Life” which you can get on Amazon. Also support and donate to Autismup.org

Most of us remember the story ESPN highlighted in 2006 about a young man Jason McElwain, with Autism entering his first and only High School game with 4 minutes remaining, where he caught fire and knocked down 6 3-pointers in a row. Have you ever wondered who his coach was? Let me introduce you to my friend and one of my personal hero's Coach Jim Johnson. You won't want to miss his message! In the words of Coach Johnson "On the night of February 15, 2006, the bleachers at Greece Athena High School near Rochester, New York, were packed with students who had just begun cheering wildly and jumping up and down. During that same moment, I collapsed into my seat as tears welled in my eyes. Never before had I made a coaching move with such impact. Never had I felt such emotion in my career. You'd think we had just won a championship. It wasn't a buzzer-beating basket; it wasn't a heave from half-court that made the place go nuts. In fact, it wasn't even a specific play. All I had done was turn toward the player with uniform number 52, point my index finger at him, and say “J-Mac.” Up bounced Jason McElwain. In giving him some playing time, I enabled him to realize a lifelong dream. It was the last home contest of his senior year, and Jason was seeing his first varsity action. Now this might seem like a fairly ordinary moment, but Jason wasn't your ordinary basketball player. He was small and skinny. He stood all of 5 feet, 7 inches and weighed only 120 pounds, and his blonde hair was partially covered by a head band. Jason—or J-Mac, a tag I had hung on him two years earlier when he first managed for us—was so excited to enter the game that he started right for the basketball court without first checking in and had to be redirected to the scorer's table. But very few people noticed that; they were just so happy to see him get in the game. Why were they so happy? They were happy because Jason is autistic and learning-disabled. Knowing his limitations, the crowd was moved while witnessing Jason entering the game. And so was I. Throughout the night J-Mac—and the increasingly impatient spectators—had wondered if I was ever going to play him. Finally, with 4:19 remaining in the game, a large lead and all my other substitutes having seen action, J-Mac ascended his stage with the fanfare of a rock-and-roll star. In fact, many fans had brought blow-up photos of Jason attached to wooden sticks, and they began eagerly waving the placards upon his grand entrance. My simple reason for playing Jason was because I loved the kid and wanted to give him the shot he deserved. I didn't do any of this for hype, but what a beautiful scene nonetheless, and enough reward right there for me. When play resumed Jason promptly launched an air ball, and I put my head in my hands. Prayer supposedly isn't allowed in public schools, but I started praying for all I was worth: “Please, God, let him make just one basket.” He then missed a layup. I started praying harder. Fortunately, God must be a basketball fan. And he apparently had a message to deliver to the rest of the world that night. In fact, I believe it was nothing short of a miracle. ...I've read and heard, many times over, the Gospel accounts of miracles performed by Jesus. These acts typically involved common, everyday folks. Some of them had disabilities. All had faith, and they became a positive example for others. From that same inspiration of faith I find the meaning behind the miracle of February 15, 2006. As it turned out, I'd say J-Mac and I were just the kind of people God might employ to send a message of hope to the rest of the world in the form of a timeless, feel-good story.   Author of: A Coach and A Miracle   Website: https://coachjimjohnson.com J-Mac ESPN Video: https://youtu.be/__JQcJ-wr0M   Coach, Thank you for inspiring me over the past few years. In his many public-speaking appearances, the Rochester, New York resident relates his role in a basketball game that got Hollywood calling. He also emphasizes the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship, delivering his talks with a heartfelt style that has brought audiences to their feet. On Feb. 15, 2006, Coach Johnson made the kindhearted gesture of inserting his autistic manager, Jason McElwain, now known to the world as J-Mac into Greece Athena High School's final home game, which the Trojans won 79-43. Coach Johnson, also, was featured in major news outlets around the country. To make the Hollywood ending complete, Greece Athena captured the first Section V title of Coach Johnson's career a few weeks later. Jim Johnson grew up in a large family, the eldest of 6 (3 brothers and 2 sisters).  His dad was a PE teacher and was his high school basketball coach.  Jim's father was a key role in his life.  “He gave me the real passion to want to coach.” Jim recalls.  Jim played a lot of sports while he was young, but in middle school basketball became his passion. He was lucky to play for his dad in high school and when he went to college and was cut from the team after his second year he knew his dream of playing in the NBA was not going to manifest. After college, Jim wanted to be a teacher and a high school basketball coach. He worked for 3 years as an assistant coach in Greece, NY where he had grown up.  At 25, he got a break to be a head coach about 25 minutes from where he grew up.  “My first year coaching, I wanted to take them from the outhouse to the penthouse!  I led that team to 17 consecutive losses.” Jim laughs.  Ultimately he was let go from the position and his own loss became a great motivator for him to become a better coach. After that Jim started to read and study a lot about being a better leader.   One of the books Jim picked up was The Seven Habits by Dr. Covey.  “He talked about the Seven habits, but also talked about having a Why in your life.” Jim tells Rod.   Now, Jim focuses on pushing people to find and understand their “Why”.  Exploring your personal mission and leading yourself first became hallmarks of Jim's life and his coaching style. “My personal mission is to be an outstanding role model that makes a positive difference in the world by helping others make their dreams come true.” Jim says.  Leadership traits that are consistently found in good leaders:  1) Lead by example.  Come in with a positive attitude everyday 2) Have a service mindset.   Watching his Why become a Reality  Jim had been coaching for over 20 years and had never won a sectional championship.  But this year, he had a strong team.  Jason McElway was the team manager and was on the autism spectrum.  What was unique about Jason was his passion for basketball.  “I have coached for thirty years and rarely would have someone keep trying out if they hadn't made the team the previous year.” Jim says. Jason didn't make the team for 3 straight years.  His senior year, he was so committed to the program that Jim wanted him to suit him up to play.  “It was senior night, I wanted to get Jason in so he could score.  We had a great crowd that night.”  With just over 4 minutes left in the 4th quarter, Jason was put in to play.  When he went in the student body gave him a standing ovation, the parents stood up with a head shot of Jason on a paint stick, and the emotions Jim felt were overwhelming.  Jim's team was 20 points up when Jason entered the game. The first time he had the ball, he had a 3 point shot and missed. The next possession he had a 10 footer that he missed but he was getting closer.  The third possession with just over three minutes, Jason was in the spot for another 3 pointer and he made the shot.  At that point, Jim was elated.  The team kept passing him the ball.  He made a shot from the arc, almost an NBA 3 and Jim was thinking oh no Jason that is way too far.  He launches and swish it goes in! The crowd ran out on the floor along with the team.  “At this point I have no idea how many points he scored, and the public announcer comes on and says the leading scorer was J Mac with 20 points. The greatest moment in my coaching career.”  But the excitement for Jason didn't stop in that high school gym. A student who videoed the game put it on the internet and it went viral.  Jason's speech pathologist called the news station and said you need to see this.  From there, it was sent out nationally.  Jim got invited to go on the Oprah Show with Jason and and his parents.  Despite the national attention, Jim and his team had more games to play. They had never got to a semifinals but this year they won and were on the way to the finals.  The place was sold out.  They were down 14-3 just 4 minutes into the game.  But they came back to win it. “That was the first win for a sectional championship for us.” Jim tells Rod. “ Later that night as we ate, We watched highlights of our sectional win on ESPN.  We won the next year as well.  The last nine years, Jason came back to help coach and we won 4 more sectional championships.”    To this day the only thing Jim wishes we could have changed about his life and his career is finding his “Why” earlier in my life.

121: Coach Jim Johnson: Retired High School Basketball Coach and Teacher at Greece Athena High School, Motivational Speaker, Professional Speaker, Author of A Coach and a Miracle, and Organizational Culture, Employee Engagement and Leadership Expert, has bounced back from losing his coaching job after a difficult first season to winning six championships.  Coach Jim Johnson  Host Mark Pattison opens up the show with a quote from the actor and comedian Jim Carrey: “If you are not in the moment, you are either looking forward to uncertainty or back to pain and regret.” The guest that Mark feels fits this quote is Coach Jim Johnson from Rochester, New York. Determination and resilience have played a huge role in his career. He began his role as high school head basketball coach by losing his position after a first season where his team lost 17 consecutive games out of the 19-game season. But Coach Johnson’s bounced back and became much greater than that fall.    On this episode of Finding Your Summit Podcast, we talk with Coach Jim Johnson, Retired High School Basketball Coach and Teacher at Greece Athena High School, Motivational Speaker, Professional Speaker, Author of A Coach and a Miracle, and Organizational Culture, Employee Engagement and Leadership Expert. His father was his role model for coaching and he even played high school basketball for his dad. Fast forward to Jim Johnson becoming a head coach after three years as an assistant, and witnessing, as he describes, “a miracle” on the basketball court.    What You Will Learn:   Imagine the amount of passion for coaching Jim Johnson needed after his first season had a losing record of 1-18 record and they let him go as a coach. “It was an extremely humbling experience. But it ended up being, in reflection, one of the best experiences from my professional career because of two reasons. Number One,  it made me realize I had a lot to learn about leadership and coaching. And Number Two, is it really motivated me when you have a setback like that I wanted to prove that school wrong for letting me go.”    Coach Jim Johnson’s motto of “Think bigger, lead better and win more” helped him lead his Greece Athena High School basketball team to 428 career victories. “My first 10 years it was quite a struggle in coaching. But fortunately I kept working at it and things started to get better. The last 23 years of my coaching career we never had a losing season and we ended up winning a number of championships.”   How did  Jason McElwain get his famed nickname J-Mac? “In 2003-2004, a young man came into our program. He is on the autism spectrum and he is also learning disabled. And he was a little guy back then. He is much bigger now. But he was about 5’5”, maybe about 100 pounds. He tried out for our JV basketball team and I knew very little about the autism spectrum at that point and his name was Jason McElwain. I actually tagged him the name J-Mac, which stuck because I could not pronounce his last name.”    What J-Mac may have lacked in basketball talent he more than made up for with his big passionate heart and commitment to the basketball team. He worked as a JV manager and even stayed for the varsity games. “Between his sophomore and junior year and his junior and senior year he tried out for the varsity team, I coached for two consecutive years and did not make the team. But he was so loyal and what was so amazing is he would come to everything, all our offseason workouts, our league play. He was just a big part of this.”   On J-Mac’s third possession in that incredibly special basketball game, Jason got the ball behind the three-point arc and he let it go and scored, gaining a huge triumphant response from the cheering crowd. What was Coach Jim Johnson thinking at this moment? “Jason’s boyhood idol is Kobe Bryant. And literally, he turned into Kobe for the next three minutes and he started making shot after shot. And when the smoke had cleared, He had scored about 20 points in about three minutes, including six three-pointers. He tied our school record for three-pointers. ”    Earning Your Victories   What contributed to Jason McElwain’s amazing record-tying performance on the basketball court? “In deserving victory, one of the things we always talk about is are we working as hard as we possibly can and the one thing that I am very proud to share with you about Jason is he was very diligent in trying to be the best that he could be. In any way that he could help the team.”    6 Keys to Make Your Dreams Come True   Coach Jim Johnson created his own personal mission statement to be crystal clear about the type of person he aims to be. He also established the team mission statement of: develop winners on and off the court. During this episode of Finding Your Summit Podcast, Coach Jim Johnson discusses elements of his 6 keys to making your dreams come true: “The first thing is really finding your passion, because when you discover that passion, what I found is when you really love something, although there is certainly a lot of work involved, it doesn’t feel as much like work because you have such joy and you are so driven to have success.”    Links to Additional Resources: Mark Pattison:: markpattisonnfl.com Coach Jim Johnson: coachjimjohnson.com Coach Jim Johnson: Linkedin  Twitter  Facebook Laird Superfood – Code: Markp20 [Sponsor] Cascade Mountain Tech [Sponsor] E-Learning Course Be sure to check out Mark’s new e-learning course here.
