Meg played basketball at NYU and has built an impressive coaching resume, having coached at D1 and D2 schools before returning to NYU. Meg has run the NYC marathon several times as a charity partner with Project Purple. Meg discusses her coaching philosophy and how her approach has fostered a strong team dynamic, which she calls a sisterhood. She explains that her bond with the team goes beyond basketball and shares what she looks for when recruiting team members. Last season, she and her team went undefeated at 31-0 and won the championship for their division. Meg reflects on this achievement and emphasizes her sense of belonging as the head coach at NYU. Her passion for basketball comes from her father, who was her first coach and introduced her to the sport. She shares memories of his support and recalls the day she told him she got the job at NYU. She always feels his presence on the court, even after his passing. She lost her father to pancreatic cancer. Meg and Dino discuss the state of women's basketball and women's sports, highlighting the increased media attention and public interest. Coach Johnson emphasizes a player-centered approach, focusing on encouraging each athlete's strengths and weaknesses. He believes in designing every aspect of the game around individual players, ensuring they feel confident and supported when they step onto the court. The coach discusses the delicate balance between support and challenging athletes to excel, highlighting the importance of documentation and constructive feedback. The conversation touches on practice planning, with Coach Johnson stressing the importance of incorporating team goals and addressing areas for improvement based on recent performances. He advocates for a flexible approach that allows for adjustments throughout the season. Coach Johnson shares two significant moments in his coaching journey: starting with a team of inexperienced players and witnessing substantial progress over a season, going from losing every game to competing in overtime against a previously dominant opponent. These experiences reinforced his commitment to student-centered coaching and celebrating incremental progress. The interview includes a rapid-fire Q&A session, revealing Coach Johnson's preferences and perspectives on various basketball-related topics. He discusses challenges in teaching certain offensive systems and maintaining team cohesion, emphasizing the importance of patience in coaching. Coach Johnson's ideal player is described as determined, confident, a teacher and student of the game, and hardworking. He admires players like Allen Iverson and Giannis Antetokounmpo, and coaches like John Wooden. His favorite quote reflects his coaching philosophy: "Go not where the path may lead; instead, leave a trail for others to follow." The podcast concludes with Coach Johnson's advice to his younger self: start coaching earlier. This aligns with the host's perspective that coaching experience at any level is valuable for aspiring coaches. Throughout the interview, several key themes emerge: The importance of a player-centered coaching approach Balancing support and challenge in athlete development Flexibility and reflection in practice planning Celebrating small victories and progress The value of patience and perseverance in coaching The significance of team cohesion and individual growth This podcast offers valuable insights for both new and experienced coaches, emphasizing the multifaceted nature of basketball coaching and the continuous learning process involved in the profession. In one of our favorite conversations on The Pivot, Ryan, Channing and Fred talk with NBA legend Jamal Crawford on everything from his basketball journey to Michael Jordan bond to fatherhood to life after the game and importance of legacy. Whether it is starting roles or years of advice, he's given back a lot to the game he loves, and on this episode we get a rare glimpse of how one person can have so much love and gratitude for a sport. When people bring up the greatest ball handlers basketball has ever seen, there is a shortlist of guys who make that group, with most of the players being shorter point guards who have made a living off of facilitating NBA games and dominating other small defenders. At 6'5”, Jamal cemented himself as one of the best isolation players from the shooting guard position and adapted a “whatever it takes” mentality to win which led to Jamal being named the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year three times and the 2018 NBA Teammate of the Year which meant the most to him because it was always about who he is over what he is that matters. As a young man growing up in LA and Seattle, Jamal shares how a random but timely interaction with Paul Pierce pushed him to be in school and approach his grades with as much love and detail as he did basketball, and once he started, the opportunities started flowing.  His natural ball handling skills and unique approach to the sport paved a path not many can walk professional sports, but Jamal did it was class and respect, being clear that playing basketball was never about changing his circumstances, rather it was always about his pure love for the sport and the magic feeling that took over his body every time he touched a ball.  It was after getting drafted where Jamal's ability and basketball career truly took off and how meeting one man, forever changed his life. Sharing never-told-before stories to The Pivot, Jamal opens up how Michael Jordan took him under his wing and explains how their close knit bond on and off the court was formed. MJ deemed Jamal his go-to partner in summer ball and the duo never lost while attracting stars and celebs to their pick up games. By developing this life-long bond with the GOAT, Jamal understands how that bond changed his life on every level by just knowing he had the “Greatest Ever” in his corner, helped his career skyrocket and he even shares some off-the-court stories between the two from gambling to parties to hard lessons. After listening to Jamal talk his basketball journey, how he approached the game, his love for the sport and ability to easily talk any aspect and break down players and plays, Ryan called him a “Basketball Nerd”, a compliment to how much he truly loves the game.  Before closing out the conversation, Jamal talks fatherhood, what it's like coaching his son and the lessons learned through this experience. The current on-air analyst gives his take on the current NBA playoff picture, his comparison of Kyrie and Jokic and how Wembley is the emerging face of the game for years to come. Crawford has always been an analyzer, hyper-aware of all that is going on around him, and his breakdown of any situation proves just that. He may not have an All-Star appearance to his name, but he tells the guys that's part of his story of what he gave back to a game that gave him so much. As the Head Coach of Baylor Men's Basketball, Scott Drew has the ability to talk about money on his own behalf, as well as all of the young athletes he gets to coach and mentor each and every year. Carl and Coach Drew talk about the financial pressures many players face today, how he tries to instill good financial lessons in them before they leave his team, and the importance of mentoring his players both on and off the court.  When Coach Scott Drew accepted the head coaching position at Baylor in 2003, the job was arguably the worst in all of college sports. Even if you don't follow college sports, the state of the team was pulled straight from the headlines. The program was in a dire spot.  But Coach Drew, a man of deep faith, had a confident vision of what the program could be, even in the face of such adversity, and he guided his team to the pinnacle of success. Under his leadership, Baylor made its first NCAA Tournament appearance in almost 20 years in 2008, and at the 2021 National Championship, Coach Drew led Baylor to its first-ever NCAA Men's Basketball National Championship, defeating Gonzaga in the title game. As you'll hear, Coach Drew shares his perspective on prioritizing what truly matters and the role that he plays as a coach in shaping his players' financial mindset. He is a trailblazer in a sport full of tradition, pushing the rules to the brink, wearing his emotions on his sleeve and stepping on the court with a flare never seen before yet his calm demeanor and laid back tone caught Ryan, Channing and Fred by surprise as they sat with him for a layered conversation of sports, limelight, family, mental health and surviving scrutiny. Kyrgios' antics during matches are a sharp contrast from the chill man sitting across from the guys and an example of an athlete's reputation in the media not truly representing who that person is. Growing up in Australia, Nick had a unique childhood, spending a decade training from age 10yrs old working towards his goal of becoming a tennis star. His work paid off, and Nick became one of two tennis players on tour to defeat Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic on the first try. Nick shares how expectations were low and he surpassed people's thoughts giving him the reassurance that he didn't need others approval but just needed his own self respect and worth. Not only did he have historical wins on the court, but he did it his way, with trick shots that were unfamiliar at the time and a style not supported by the Tennis faithful.
