From his days breaking records at the University of Georgia to co-founding the Disability Dream & Do (D3Day) events, Doug shares his journey of athletic triumphs and his mission to empower children with disabilities. Learn how Doug, inspired by his son Gideon and his friendship with pro baseball player Dave Clark, has transformed lives through D3Day's free sports camps. Discover the power of sports to transcend limitations and ignite dreams in this heartfelt and motivating conversation. Tune in to hear how Doug's story blends passion, perseverance, and purpose—and how you can be part of the movement. About Doug Cornfield, Director of D3Day LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/dougcornfield Get his book on Amazon, Pulling Each Other Along: https://a.co/d/5LiGrZH Doug Cornfield's journey from a multi-sport high school athlete to a champion on the track is a testament to his dedication and athletic prowess. Excelling in basketball and track at Taylor University, Doug's freshman year was marked by a National Championship win in the 800m at the NCCAA Track & Field Championships. This triumph spurred him to devote himself entirely to running, a decision that led to a full scholarship and a transfer to the University of Georgia (UGA). At UGA, Doug consistently ranked as a top contender in the SEC and etched his name in the record books with several top ten all-time performances in both indoor and outdoor track and field. His athletic achievements also include being a member of the Georgia All-State Cross Country Team and representing Athletes in Action in European races in 1987. Beyond the track, Doug's competitive spirit translated into a successful career in sales. As a top sales representative for NEST Entertainment, he played a pivotal role in the company's explosive growth, eventually becoming the East Coast Regional Vice President. Under his leadership, the company's cash flow soared from $500,000 per year to $500,000 per week within three years. In the 1990s, Doug leveraged his sales expertise as a consultant for various companies, testing new products before joining Merrill Lynch in 2000 and relocating to Corning, NY. In 2009, while at Merrill Lynch, Doug's path crossed with Dave Clark, the only professional baseball player to pitch from crutches. This meeting was not only professionally significant but also personal, as Doug's son, Gideon, was born with physical challenges similar to Dave's. Eager to learn from Dave's experiences and the approach his parents took in raising him, Doug found both a client and a friend. Inspired by Dave's remarkable life story, Doug persuaded him to share his journey with the world. Together, they co-founded the Dave Clark Foundation, Ltd., which organizes and hosts disability sports events under the banner of Disability Dream & Do (D3Day). These events are designed to inspire and empower individuals within the disability community to pursue their dreams and achieve their full potential. In this episode, Nick Koziol sits down with Henrik Wilenius, an author with a passion for fostering human connection through storytelling. Henrik shares his journey from a curious child in Helsinki to a global traveler, entrepreneur, and writer. They delve into the inspiration behind Henrik's Rise Up Trilogy, a series born from his volunteer work with the Helsinki Red Cross Youth Shelter. Henrik discusses the importance of diversity, friendship, and courage in an increasingly divided world. Join us for a terrific conversation about the power of stories. Get the Rise Up Trilogy: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BVJ39ZWJ?ref_=dbs_p_pwh_rwt_anx_b_lnk&storeType=ebooks About Henrik Wilenius Email: henrik.wilenius@gmail.com LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/henrik-wilenius-b6a22223b Website: henrikwilenius.com Instagram: www.instagram.com/henrikwileniusauthor TikTok: www.TikTok.com/henrikwileniusauthor As a child, Henrik devoured stories of faraway lands. Through them, he discovered that the pathway to understanding people from different cultures was to look for things they had in common rather than what set them apart. Finding connection to people became his passion. In his early teens, he left his safe little bubble in Helsinki and ventured out to the great big world, eventually landing in Paris. At the age of twenty-one, Henrik returned to Finland and enrolled in the Helsinki Business School. Two years later he founded a contemporary art sale and services company, but despite the initial success he had to close down the business after five years when the whole western world fell into a deep recession. Henrik decided to go back to school to study philosophy. One morning as he was working on an essay on rhetoric, it dawned on him that he was actually writing his first book. It was a philosophical study into his own coming-of-age. End of Restlessness was published by a Finnish publisher (WSOY) and after publishing another book, this time a young adult novel, he switched to English. The Rise Up Trilogy was inspired by his fifteen-year stint as a volunteer in Helsinki Red Cross Youth Shelter. In a world that is turning into an increasingly hostile place for any minority, what people need is stories that evoke diversity, friendship, human decency, and the courage to listen to one's heart. Besides his husband, Henrik loves novels in Russian about the Soviet life, French pop, snowboarding, sampling vegan delights across the world, and spending time with their brazen, eclectic group of friends and family. About Christopher Maher At the age of 22, Christopher Lee Maher was a Navy SEAL, in his prime with a sleek 1.8% body fat and pound for pound, he was one of the fittest people on the planet. Like many high performing athletes, he dealt with joint pain on a semi-consistent basis. Over time, that escalated to pain in every joint, in his feet, lower back, and neck. He was headed for a full-blown hip replacement, resorted to reading lips because his hearing was shot, and his vision wasn't much better. Through intense pain, Christopher devoted all of his energy, time, and resources seeking out answers that would alleviate his discomfort. When you come to Sager you are in for a terrific experience. Sagar is a 5 BBL brewhouse, a cozy tap room filled with old-world charm that features a German-style long table S-bar and comfy corner. One thing you'll also see is a sign with a quote from William Butler Yeats, “There Are No Strangers Here; Only Friends You Haven't Yet Met”. Paul Guarracini, Co-Founder/Brewmaster of Sager Beer Works, and his business partner Don Tuminelli, created a “Beer Lover's Haven” where friends and family can meet to eat, drink and just hang out. They didn't just stop with an amazing atmosphere, terrific beer, and great food…they took over 20 years of craft brewing passion and built clever ways to help non-profits and positively impact the community.  About Paul Guarracini, Partner/Brewmaster Sager Beer Works Email: paul@sagerbeerworks.com  After thirty-plus years in Supply Chain & Logistics at Eastman Kodak, Paul achieved a dream held by many homebrewers like himself and decided to go "pro" in 2012. His first brewery, Fairport Brewing Co, was successful but partnerships can be difficult, and he separated from that business in 2017. Soon thereafter, he reunited with Don Tumminelli, another local homebrewer, to open Sager Beer Works in 2018. Focusing on classic beers brewed by Paul, elevated pub food by Don, and a cozy environment to enjoy them, the brewpub has firmly established itself in the Rochester beer scene. Reflecting on their journey and those that have helped them, Paul and Don have a habit of sharing knowledge and giving back through seminars, charity beer projects, and mentoring start-up breweries.
