Welcome to Episode 281 of Lucretius Today. This is a podcast dedicated to the poet Lucretius, who wrote "On The Nature of Things," the most complete presentation of Epicurean philosophy left to us from the ancient world. Each week we walk you through the Epicurean texts, and we discuss how Epicurean philosophy can apply to you today. If you find the Epicurean worldview attractive, we invite you to join us in the study of Epicurus at EpicureanFriends.com, where we discuss this and all of our podcast episodes. This week we continue our series covering Cicero's "Tusculan Disputations" from an Epicurean viewpoint. This series addresses five of the greatest questions in human life (Death, Pain, Grief/Fear, Joy/Desire, and Virtue) with Cicero speaking for the majority and Epicurus the main opponent: Today we begin Part 2 - "Is Pain An Evil?," starting with Section V, where the question is posed. -------------------------- Show notes are here: https://www.epicureanfriends.com/thread/4454-episode-281-is-pain-the-greatest-evil-or-even-an-evil-at-all-part-one-not-yet-re/?postID=35286#post35286
Episode 170 Chapter 29, Buchla Analog Synthesizers. Works Recommended from my book, Electronic and Experimental Music Welcome to the Archive of Electronic Music. This is Thom Holmes. This podcast is produced as a companion to my book, Electronic and Experimental Music, published by Routledge. Each of these episodes corresponds to a chapter in the text and an associated list of recommended works, also called Listen in the text. They provide listening examples of vintage electronic works featured in the text. The works themselves can be enjoyed without the book and I hope that they stand as a chronological survey of important works in the history of electronic music. Be sure to tune-in to other episodes of the podcast where we explore a wide range of electronic music in many styles and genres, all drawn from my archive of vintage recordings. There is a complete playlist for this episode on the website for the podcast. Moe Jackson's football coaching career made headlines after he parted ways with Aquinas Institute in early March. Jackson led the football team to a Section V championship, but alleges that racial bias played a role in his termination. Less than a month later, he was hired by Vertus High School, a predominantly Black all-boys charter school, to lead their young football program. While his role at Aquinas was bringing the storied program to victory, at Vertus, it's also about nurturing young Black men. This hour guest host Racquel Stephen sits down with Coach Jackson to talk about his coaching philosophy, the value of mentorship, and what those relationships mean for both young people and the adults who support them. Our guests: Moe Jackson, football coach at Vertus Charter High School Maurice Rice, lead preceptor at Vertus Charter High School Yariel Madina, student at Vertus Charter High School Michael Rogers, student at Vertus Charter High School

We can only heal ourselves. As we accept the Atonement for ourselves, and the Holy Instant of total suspension of our "attack thoughts," we can accept the healing that the Christ offers us. If we wish only to be healed, we heal. But if we are afraid of healing, we will not have it. We have to "love without attack" if only for an instant. Fear and attack go together. Conflict is their nature. We do not need to be totally free of all conflict to be healed. If we had no conflict we would not need healing. Yet, for a Holy Instant we must suspend conflict and attack in order to receive Christ's vision and gift of healing. A Holy Instant is sufficient. It is necessary for our healing. Having accepted healing for ourselves wholeheartedly, we have the potential to shine this healing light onto others. It can undo all the war and conflict the world is caught in, and offer healing to all the people in this world of strife. In the Holy Instant there is a blessing we receive and give. We bless the world because we bless ourselves first with the miracle of healing. We let in the part of our mind that is Christ's healing Force. It is already within us, and we have to call upon this Energy for our own healing. Then we become an "Example of Healing" that this Section V talks about.

MIRACLES FOR YOU Sondra Ray & Markus Ray on A Course in Miracles
The Special Relationship is the attempt to "kill God" (or in this case our Higher Self) in place of the Special Relationship. The Special Relationship is one in which we believe our "littleness" is "real," and we need someone else to fulfill us in ways we think we do not have. First we "deprive" ourself of our Grandeur, and make up an "altar of form" to replace the Content of our Divine Connection. Usually there is a "payoff," a neurotic benefit for maintaining the Special Relationship. The real completion, for which this Section V is to make clear, would say "no" to this "specialness" and take us across the "bridge” to our True Self, restoring our awareness of our God-Created Self-Identity. In this Self we have no “needs,” therefore the Special Relationship is seen as an illusion, having no real purpose at all.

Coach Jim Johnson, based in Rochester, New York, is a basketball luminary known for both his decades-long coaching achievements and a singular, heartwarming moment in 2006. Over his 30-year coaching tenure, he transformed losing teams into champions and accrued an enviable record of 428-221. However, it was his decision in a 2006 game that made national headlines: he allowed Jason McElwain (known as J-Mac), an autistic team manager, to play. In just a few minutes on the court, J-Mac netted 20 points, including six three-pointers, thrusting both player and coach into the national spotlight. The years that followed were filled with milestones. After the celebrated game, Greece Athena clinched its first Section V title. Furthermore, Coach Johnson received multiple accolades, including several Coach of the Year awards. He went on to guide the Trojans to an astonishing 66-5 record over three seasons. Another memorable moment arose when he and J-Mac were jointly featured in a 2009 CBS Sports segment. A graduate of SUNY-Cortland and SUNY-Brockport, Coach Johnson took retirement from teaching in 2014 and coaching in 2015, but his mission didn't end there. He transitioned to motivational speaking, offering presentations such as "Dreams Really Do Come True" and "Leadership Lessons from Half-Court". In his talks, Johnson underscores the essence of teamwork and leadership. He frequently references the historic game, emphasizing how J-Mac's teammates, driven by camaraderie, consistently passed him the ball. Now, with a commitment to broadening horizons, Coach Johnson travels the nation, inspiring and educating a new generation with his story and insights. Learn more at: https://coachjimjohnson.com/
Today we discuss 'The Machiavellians, Defenders of Freedom" by James Burnham. We focus on Section V "Michels: The Limits of Democracy", which detail's Michel's critique of democracy and his iron law of oligarchy. Disclaimer: All opinions are our own and don't represent any institution we may or may not be a part of, respectively.
Section V: Separation We believe that all the saved should live in such a manner as to not bring reproach upon their Savior and Lord; and, that separation from all religious apostasy, all worldly and sinful pleasures, practices and associations is commanded of God. Although we believe that absolute immunity to sin takes place only when believers are taken to be with the Lord, we do realize the necessity of forsaking a habitual walk in sin (II Timothy 3:1-5, Romans 12:1- 2, Romans 14:13, I John 2:15-17, II John 9-11, II Corinthians 6:14-17, James 2:1-26, II Peter 3:18). PURPOSE: A Doctrinal Series for Heritage Bible Chapel's Sunday School, under the premise that it is vital to review and teach through our Statement of Faith (Doctrine Essentials) with some regularity to avoid “theological amnesia and spiritual myopia.” The subjects are taught using a scripture-first approach to feature highlights of our confession in a 30-minute teaching setting. Teachers are encouraged to focus on main points, work in discussion and application as appropriate, and supplement with HBC's Constitution, church history, and other resources. Care must be given to isolate the main points due to time constraints. LOCATION & TIME: This class will be located in the Sanctuary. Attendees are encouraged to begin arriving at 9:00 a.m. Teaching will start by 9:10 a.m.
The guys talk about how Section V sports are struggling to get and keep referees and coaches for the season.
Join me for a one on one discussion with former U.S. Senator Doug Jones (D-AL).

Section V has started an online campaign encouraging positive cheering and no more yelling at officials and other children !
Three decades ago, in the fledgling days of the internet, Congress amended Section V of the Telecommunications Act of 1996 to grant broader legal protections to websites who host information from third parties. Part of Section 230 of that law (known as the Communications Decency Act) has been referred to as “the 26 words that created the internet,” due to the burgeoning effect it had on online content as internet companies were protected from lawsuits. Two current Supreme Court cases—Gonzalez v. Google and Twitter v. Taamneh—ask whether algorithms created by companies like Google or Twitter, which might promote and recommend terroristic or other harmful material, result in the companies being held liable for aiding and abetting the terrorists; or whether, as in the Google case, Section 230 applies to grant immunity to the platforms. In this episode, guests Mary Anne Franks of the University of Miami School of Law and Kate Klonick of St. John's University of Law School break down the arguments in each case before the court. They also discuss the history and purpose of Section 230, why Congress enacted it, and how it's been interpreted over the years. They also look forward to how this case could impact platforms like Facebook, Google, YouTube, and Twitter and the future of the Internet itself. Host Jeffrey Rosen moderates. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: How Many People Are In The Invisible Graveyard?, published by Maxwell Tabarrok on April 19, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. This is a cross-post from my blog Maximum Progress. More lives were saved by vaccines than by any other response to Covid-19. Vaccines save more lives if they are available earlier. I use two methods to estimate how many lives might have been saved given an earlier vaccine rollout. I then consider safety and efficacy information tradeoffs and non-regulatory constraints to vaccine rollout. I find that a 4 month acceleration to a vaccine rollout in August of 2020 was achievable and would have saved between 130 and 350 thousand lives over the next two years of the pandemic. I conclude with recommendations for future pandemics given the large benefits of vaccine acceleration. I. Introduction Of all measures taken to curb the spread or danger of the Covid-19 pandemic, vaccines were by far the most effective. With three doses, a vaccinated person is 41 times less likely to die from Covid than an unvaccinated person. Incredibly, these vaccines were designed essentially over a weekend at the earliest stage of the pandemic in January of 2020. It took 11 months, billions of dollars, and thousands of man hours for these life-saving vaccines to get through the FDA's emergency testing process. This was the fastest vaccine rollout ever, and it was the result of immense effort and ingenuity. Still, over three hundred thousand people died in those 11 months. The lives we could have saved with a faster vaccine rollout are in an invisible graveyard since we cannot observe the counterfactual worlds where they still live. In sections II and III, I use two methods: linear estimation and SIR modeling, to perform counterfactual analyses of earlier vaccine approvals using CDC data and find that hundreds of thousands of lives could have been saved even with modest accelerations. Then, in section IV I analyze the costs and feasibility of an accelerated rollout. Section V concludes with recommendations for future pandemics. II. Linear Estimation In this section I approach the question of how many lives could have been saved by an earlier vaccine rollout by simply scaling down observed cases by a constant “vaccine effect” term which is calculated from CDC data on differences in death rates depending on vaccination status. Figure 1. Deaths Rates Among Unvaccinated (blue) and Vaccinated (red) Source: CDC Data on differential death rates found on their website here. This data shows that unvaccinated people are at somewhere between a 15 and 20 times higher risk of death from Covid than vaccinated people. Some of this effect is probably due to the selection of more cautious people into the vaccinated category who would have been less likely to die anyway. But there is also a selection of the most vulnerable into the vaccinated category, especially older people, which would make the vaccinated group as a whole look more likely to die. Direct studies of the vaccine's protection confirm large effects so I take the mean of this vaccine effect (16.6) as the constant vaccine effect for the rest of this section. The CDC's data on the vaccine effect only goes back to April of 2021, but they have data on Covid-19 cases and deaths since the start of the pandemic. This data is what will be scaled up or down by the vaccine effect. Figure 2. New Cases (blue) and Deaths (red) Per 100k Each Week Since January 2020 Source: CDC Data found on their website here. In the counterfactual estimations of earlier vaccine rollouts, the vaccine scaling effect will only apply to the percentage of the population who are vaccinated, over and above the percentage who were already vaccinated at that point in the actual rollout schedule, graphed below. Governor Glenn Youngkin issued a proclamation in late March convening the session, as read by the clerks of both the House of Delegates and the Senate. “A proclamation that in accordance with the provisions of Article IV, Section VI and Article V, Section V of the Constitution of Virginia and the powers thereby invested in the Governor to call a special session of the General Assembly, I, Glenn Youngkin, Governor of Virginia do hereby summon the members of the Senate and the House of Delegates constituting the General Assembly of Virginia, to meet in Special Session commencing the Fourth Day of April of 2022 for the purpose of completion of the 2023-2024 biennial budget.”Both the House of Delegates and Senate adopted bills to establish the rules for the special session. Delegate Terry Kilgore (R-1) explains House Joint Resolution 6001.“Basically it allows us to consider House Bill 29 and House Bill 30 and any other conference reports that were continued and still ongoing as we adjourned the 2022 regular session,” Kilgore said. “It would also allow legislation as may be communicated from the Governor.”Some Senators objected to the Governor’s ability to suggest legislation. “It’s up to us to decide what we want to consider in special sessions, not the Governor,” said Senator Scott Surovell (D-36). “I think that’s been the prerogative of our chambers forever. I think it’s important to protect that prerogative not only for this session but the for the future.”Surovell made an amendment to ban this, but later withdrew this request. Memorials and commendations are allowed, as well as confirmation of judges. Any legislation sent down to the legislature from the executive branch would need to go through the committee process in both Chambers. So far, Governor Youngkin has introduced one bill to eliminate the statewide gas tax from May 1 to July 31, as well as other provisions. This has been referred to the House Finance Committee. (HB6001). The Virginia Senate received the resolution from the House of Delegates, as confirmed by Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears. “Senator Saslaw, the senior Senator from Fairfax County, is ordered to inform the House of Delegate that the Senate is duly organized and ready to proceed to business,” said the Lieutenant Governor. Budget conferees met immediately after the meeting. Delegate Barry Knight (R-81) gave an update from the House’s perspective. “Budget negotiations are ongoing,” Knight said. “We are talking to them a little bit back and forth. They are kind of taking their time and we are ready to meet any time they are.” Both Houses can reconvene by giving 48 hours notice. Stay tuned!IPCC releases new report seeking quick action on greenhouse gas emissionsA new report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change indicates that production of greenhouse gas emissions across planet Earth were at their highest levels in recorded history, but suggests the rate may be slowing. “Without immediate and deep emissions reductions across all sectors, limiting global warming to 1.5°C is beyond reach,” reads the press release to mark the approval yesterday of an IPCC working group’s report called Climate Change 2022: Mitigation of Climate Change. The report states an 85 percent drop in the costs of solar and wind energy, as well as a push in many countries for laws and policies to reduce energy efficiency, limit deforestation, and create new forms of renewable energy. The report encourages creation of compact, walkable cities, a transition to electric fleets for public transportation, and further development of technologies to capture carbon from the atmosphere and store it.According to the release, the IPCC’s overall strategy is to reduce warming to 1.5°C requires the greenhouse gas emissions to peak before 2025, and to begin to have them reduced 43 percent by 2030. View a message from the IPCC on YouTube:What are local governments doing?Charlottesville Charlottesville City Council will have a work session on April 18 to discuss efforts by city staff toward a climate action plan. (visit the city’s website)This morning, the city announced the hiring of a company to review over forty public buildings to see how energy and water use can be reduced. CMTA Energy Solutions will perform the audit, which includes city schools. “The Technical Energy Audits currently underway are part of the first phase of an Energy Saving Performance Contract (ESPC) process that aligns directly with fulfilling the City of Charlottesville’s commitment to climate action and reducing its greenhouse gas emissions,” reads the news release that went out today. The city’s public buildings cover an area of 1.7 million square feet. The audit will inform plans to upgrade heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, upgrade lighting, and install new plumbing. AlbemarleThe Albemarle Board of Supervisors adopted a Climate Action Plan on October 7, 2020. The Facilities and Environmental Services Department releases a quarterly report that includes updates on steps Albemarle is taking to reduce its contribution to greenhouse gas emissions. Here’s some highlights from the latest report:The grounds crew that takes care of county buildings are switching to all electric tools and vehicles. Albemarle will launch an “environmental stewardship hub” online to collect county resources for community members on county programs to promote biodiversity, clean water, climate action, and reduced waste. This should happen around Earth Day, or April 22Solar powered lights have been installed at electric vehicle charging stations at the McIntire Road County Office Building. County staff in the Environmental Services Division have developed a mapping resource to assist property owners with flooding issues, sinkholes, poor water quality. There’s a whole article in the report about how collecting this information in one place can identify causes to specific problems such as blocked drainage pipes. University of VirginiaThe University of Virginia’s reductions emission plans are documented in the 2020-2030 UVA Sustainability Plan. At their recent meeting in March, they learned about how Dallas Area Rapid Transit has benefited from having an office of innovation. “We now have the largest on-demand offering in North America,” said, Greg Elsborg, who has been Chief Innovation Officer since 2019 Since that time, he has focused on a few areas. “One was to try and drive a culture of innovation across the agency and pull ideas from our employers and from communities and us, and that’s been an exciting activity set,” Elsborg said. “But another area has been the continued development and scalability of a mobile trip-planning and management application that we have for our transit providers.”Dallas Area Rapid Transit covers 760 square miles including Dallas, and twelve other cities. On-demand service is available in a third of the service area. Part of their funding comes through a one cent sales tax, an idea that has been floated in this community but is not authorized by the General Assembly. (view the presentation on the GoPass Mobility Platform)The DART system includes light rail and community rail, as well as a large bus fleet. The first mobile application was created in 2013 to help make it easier for people to travel across multiple transit systems. There is a regional fare. “So I can pay to travel across the entire region and pay a reduced fare to travel through the commuter rail and to get point to point in Fort Worth, as well as in Denton County in the north, as well as DART’s 13 cities,” Elsborg said. To unite it all, DART built its first mobile app in 2013. There have been several iterations of the GoPass Mobility Platform to add more capabilities over time. In 2018, they added a feature to allow riders to transfer cash to their mobile phones at local retailers.“So if I’m an individual that doesn’t have a debit card or a credit card but I’d like to use the mobile app, then I could use trip finding in the app and some of the other features, but to buy tickets, I could go and load cash at a retailer,” Elsborg said. “They would scan a barcode on the app and then this loads the funds into the app directly.”In 2018, DART also introduced a fare-capping system where an individual user would no longer be charged after they’d paid a certain amount. The app tracks this information. “And there’s a really nice tracker inside the app that shows you how much you spent to get toward that fare cap total,” Elsborg said. The next year, DART introduced Multimodal Microtransit to the system which introduced on-demand services that can be used in conjunction with fixed routes. Soon there will be a new feature.“We have a partnership that we’re working on with Uber so that we can direct people to Uber rides as on-demand mode through our app without having to have an Uber account or pay for your ticket through Uber,” Elsborg said. “You do it throughout our app. And that will be an industry first when that comes out.” Elsborg said DART is seeking to add other transit agencies so that there can continue to be more investment into the platform. Currently they are running the mobile app functions for over 50 cities, including Charlotte, North Carolina. One of the agencies is the one for Tulsa, Oklahoma, which until recently was run by Jaunt CEO director Ted Rieck. “I kind of call this the Swiss army knife for mobile apps,” Rieck said. “I think as we look for ways to bring our region together on transit, a mobile app like this could be a starting point.” The platform also has connections to e-scooter services as well as bike-sharing programs. To learn more about the app, view the March meeting on YouTube. Four people have viewed it so far. Will you give it a watch on YouTube and demonstrate the power of the CCE bump? Based on what transpired in a few short moments in early 2006, Coach Jim Johnson is now an authority on the subject of realizing your dreams. In his many public-speaking appearances, the Rochester, New York resident relates his role in a basketball game that got Hollywood calling. He also emphasizes the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship, delivering his talks with a heartfelt style that has brought audiences to their feet. Coach Johnson has developed winning high-school basketball teams for 30 years, taking over three losing varsity programs and turning them into winners in short periods of time. Of his 428 career victories, one in particular will surely never be duplicated. On Feb. 15, 2006, Coach Johnson made the kindhearted gesture of inserting his autistic manager, Jason McElwain, now known to the world as J-Mac into Greece Athena High School's final home game, which the Trojans won 79-43. J-Mac scored 20 points in just over four minutes, including six three-point baskets, to become an instant national celebrity. Coach Johnson, also, was featured in major news outlets around the country. COVID-19 and the Economy
In this episode of TST, we talk to Jim Johnson, a high school basketball coach with experience in winless seasons, multiple championship teams, and some of his players that have made it to the NBA. Every game has historical moments where a player or players are so in the zone that they perform amazing feats. Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger's sack for Notre Dame, Team USA Hockey winning Olympic Gold in 1980, baseball's Ron Necciai throwing a nine-inning no-hitter with 27 strikeouts, and basketball's Wilt Chamberland's 100 point game. Coach Johnson created a special moment like Coach Devine for Rudy, he made J-Mac's dream come true when he put him in his first basketball game. What happened in the last few minutes of that final game which honored seniors was nothing less than a miracle. When John Pelin was hired as athletic director for the Spencerport Central School District, he hit the ground running. Never mind the amount of experience Pelin had at the time failed to extend much beyond the then 32-year old's degree in administration. "I had head coaching experience," Pelin said of his time in Sussex County, New Jersey. "I feel very fortunate that Spencerport took a chance on someone who had a lack of experience and gave me the support to be able do the job for 30 years." Pelin's time as Spencerport's athletic director is winding down. The finish line for Pelin, who grew up in Fairport, is at the end of June, after a career in education sprawling 40 years. If Pelin, 62, still has a resume, it looks a bit different now. “He’s been a mentor for ADs all across the state, myself included," Hilton athletic director Mike Giruzzi said. "When John speaks, people, they typically listen." Leaving a large and long legacy Others might also model a thing or two in their athletic programs after ideas, approaches and accomplishments at Spencerport. The school district's Spencerport Student-Athletes Care program is 28 years old. The athletic teams are required to volunteer their time in the community or put together a charity project that could aid their neighbors. The program was recognized on a national level back in 1994. “I’m an old-school traditionalist,' Pelin said. "I really feel that you play for your community, you play for your school, you play for your school colors, you play for your classmates and we have values that we want to uphold our coaches and student-athletes to. “Over the 30 years, we shouldn’t have to stray too far from those expectations and values.” High school athletes in Spencerport are familiar with the letters P-R-I-D-E, put together standing for Proud Rangers Inspire a Drug-free Environment. "We’ve visited other places to see what works with them and how we can fit into ours," Pelin said. "We take a look at student programs, whether it be our chemical-free programs, our participation programs, our varsity club programs, we’re always trying to find ways to improve. "We focused more on relationships and student development, and got away a little bit from the Xs and Os. It’s tough to do, because the public sees the win-loss record, but I think there is a lot that goes into it. It’s still, as corny as it may sound, about the relationships and the lifelong kinds of memories." And there has been movement of Xs and Os to Monroe County league, Section V (54) and state (17 individual and team combined) titles. The first girls lacrosse program among the west side schools in the league was at Spencerport. "He’s had his hands on really impressive improvements of the Spencerport facilities," Greece Olympia assistant athletic director Ferdi Auriuso said. "That is the mark he is going to leave behind. "He not only was able to get the facilities to the level that they are, but get a winning culture beyond wrestling. Spencerport girls soccer is a two-time state champion. That’s impressive and not an accident. They take a tremendous amount of pride in having top-notch facilities, top-notch coaches. It’s only getting better." Pelin was a physical education teacher who also coached the Lenape Valley (N.J.) Regional High School's varsity boys basketball and soccer and the freshman baseball teams when he took a look at a position in Spencerport. "I was kind of looking for a larger school, with an eye on basketball," Pelin said. "They communicated back that they had a basketball opening, but did not have a physical education job. The only job they had open was director of physical education and athletics, but you couldn’t coach. "I wasn’t really ready to give up phys ed teaching and coaching, but I said what the heck for the experience. If I get an interview, I get to come home and visit my parents. I got an interview." "The superintendent at the time, Joe Clement, wanted some significant changes made in the direction of the athletic program," Pelin said. "So that was one way that allowed me to move forward, but I also feel that there is nothing better than public school high school athletics." Pelin said the school's athletic program was able to grow in different ways because there were "a lot of great people who supported us and helped move us in the right direction." "That made it easy to stay as well,” Pelin said. Greg Kincaid, vice-president of the Spencerport school district board, was the first person Pelin hired at Spencerport 30 years ago. "Very similar to the way he is now," Kincaid said. "Very professional, energetic. Task-oriented, all about what’s best for kids. Extremely organized. Any time you had a question about anything, he had an answer. "When he came in, the former AD left a set of keys and a note that said good luck. John has done incredible things at Spencerport. When he got there, the structure was very limited. He is one of the people and things you think of when you say Rangers. His work effort is second to none." Now, hear the behind-the-scenes story from J-Mac's varsity coach, Jim Johnson.Without a doubt J-Mac helped the team on, and off, the the court. It was his amazing attitude over three years a the team's manager, helping the team become cohesive and go on to win the first Section V title of Coach Johnson's career.Just a few short months after that landmark season, NBA Legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson paid a visit to the school. He met with the team for over an hour and then conducted an assembly for the entire student body. When his assistants motioned to him that it was time to leave, he waved them off, saying he wanted to spend more time. J-Mac's magical moment won the ESPY for “Best Sports Moment” at the ESPN awards show later that year. In this episode, Coach Jim Johnson tells the story of J-Mac and how he affected the success of the team.
Coach has partnered with college professor Dr. Rehnuma Karim to write a book to help young and emerging leaders. They hope to release the book in the summer of 2021. Of his 407 career victories, one in particular will surely never be duplicated. To make the Hollywood ending complete, Greece Athena captured the first Section V title of Coach Johnson's career a few weeks later. A second sectional crown followed in 2007, and Coach Johnson then coached the Trojans to their third straight league title in 2008 by posting a perfect 12-0 record in league play, netting Coach of the Year honors. Coach Johnson has made a number of radio and television appearances, including the Oprah Winfrey and Jim Rome shows. In 2006 he met President George W. Bush, Governor George Pataki, and Senator Hillary Clinton, to name just a few luminaries. The Athena team was also paid a visit at school by NBA legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson. On this episode of the Massimo Show Rod sits down with highschool basketball coach and motivational speaker, Jim Johnson. To make the Hollywood ending complete, Greece Athena captured the first Section V title of Coach Johnson's career a few weeks later. Jim Johnson grew up in a large family, the eldest of 6 (3 brothers and 2 sisters). His dad was a PE teacher and was his high school basketball coach. Jim's father was a key role in his life. “He gave me the real passion to want to coach.” Jim recalls. Jim played a lot of sports while he was young, but in middle school basketball became his passion. He was lucky to play for his dad in high school and when he went to college and was cut from the team after his second year he knew his dream of playing in the NBA was not going to manifest. After college, Jim wanted to be a teacher and a high school basketball coach. He worked for 3 years as an assistant coach in Greece, NY where he had grown up. At 25, he got a break to be a head coach about 25 minutes from where he grew up. “My first year coaching, I wanted to take them from the outhouse to the penthouse! I led that team to 17 consecutive losses.” Jim laughs. Ultimately he was let go from the position and his own loss became a great motivator for him to become a better coach. After that Jim started to read and study a lot about being a better leader. One of the books Jim picked up was The Seven Habits by Dr. Covey. “He talked about the Seven habits, but also talked about having a Why in your life.” Jim tells Rod. Now, Jim focuses on pushing people to find and understand their “Why”. Exploring your personal mission and leading yourself first became hallmarks of Jim's life and his coaching style. “My personal mission is to be an outstanding role model that makes a positive difference in the world by helping others make their dreams come true.” Jim says. Leadership traits that are consistently found in good leaders: 1) Lead by example. Come in with a positive attitude everyday 2) Have a service mindset. Watching his Why become a Reality Jim had been coaching for over 20 years and had never won a sectional championship. But this year, he had a strong team. Jason McElway was the team manager and was on the autism spectrum. What was unique about Jason was his passion for basketball. “I have coached for thirty years and rarely would have someone keep trying out if they hadn't made the team the previous year.” Jim says. Jason didn't make the team for 3 straight years. His senior year, he was so committed to the program that Jim wanted him to suit him up to play. “It was senior night, I wanted to get Jason in so he could score. We had a great crowd that night.” With just over 4 minutes left in the 4th quarter, Jason was put in to play. When he went in the student body gave him a standing ovation, the parents stood up with a head shot of Jason on a paint stick, and the emotions Jim felt were overwhelming. Jim's team was 20 points up when Jason entered the game. The first time he had the ball, he had a 3 point shot and missed. The next possession he had a 10 footer that he missed but he was getting closer. The third possession with just over three minutes, Jason was in the spot for another 3 pointer and he made the shot. At that point, Jim was elated. The team kept passing him the ball. He made a shot from the arc, almost an NBA 3 and Jim was thinking oh no Jason that is way too far. He launches and swish it goes in! The crowd ran out on the floor along with the team. “At this point I have no idea how many points he scored, and the public announcer comes on and says the leading scorer was J Mac with 20 points. The greatest moment in my coaching career.” But the excitement for Jason didn't stop in that high school gym. A student who videoed the game put it on the internet and it went viral. Jason's speech pathologist called the news station and said you need to see this. From there, it was sent out nationally. Jim got invited to go on the Oprah Show with Jason and and his parents. Despite the national attention, Jim and his team had more games to play. They had never got to a semifinals but this year they won and were on the way to the finals. The place was sold out. They were down 14-3 just 4 minutes into the game. But they came back to win it. “That was the first win for a sectional championship for us.” Jim tells Rod. “ Later that night as we ate, We watched highlights of our sectional win on ESPN. We won the next year as well. The last nine years, Jason came back to help coach and we won 4 more sectional championships.” To this day the only thing Jim wishes we could have changed about his life and his career is finding his “Why” earlier in my life.

The surah can be divided into the following eight sections. Section I (1-5) A close scrutiny of the universe reveals that its sovereign is a Blessed and Powerful Being. He has created this world with a purpose: it has been created as a trial and test for man as to who adopts the right path and who the wrong one. A necessary outcome of this trial is that a Day should come wherein the righteous be rewarded and the rebellious be punished. If this universe is carefully observed, not even a minor flaw can be pointed out in its great expanse. Repeated observations will only second this inference. The nearest of the seven skies has been adorned with stars by the Almighty; they serve the dual purpose of guiding people in their journeys and pelting Satan and his army if they try to overhear something. Section II (6-11) The power and sustenance of the Almighty so evident in this universe bears evidence that those who deny the Day of Reward and Punishment will have to face the torment of hell. It will roar and shriek like a hungry lion when it sees them. Whenever a group of these rebellious people will be flung in hell, its gate-keepers will ask them whether a warner had ever warned them of this punishment. They would admit that a warner did come to them but they rejected him and had replied that the Almighty had revealed nothing and that whoever believe that the Almighty has revealed anything have, in fact, deviated from the right path. They would also confess that they had never tried to listen to and understand what had been said to them, otherwise they would not have met this fate. Section III (12-14) People who remain fearful of their Lord in this world shall be rewarded. All their virtuous deeds are in the knowledge of Allah and He shall duly honour them. He is the Creator of all and nothing is hidden from Him. Section IV (15-18) This earth has been created by the Almighty as very obedient and submissive to man. It is a source of reminder for man of a great reality: he should fully benefit from all its pleasures and facilities but should always keep in mind that these privileges entail a day of accountability before the Almighty; not even for a moment should a person become unmindful of his Lord's grasp and should always remember that whenever the Almighty intends, He can destroy him by sending on him a natural calamity. History also bears example to this. Section V (19-21) Whatever is suspended in the unfathomable skies is held by the Almighty. He is watching everything. If someone is deprived of His assistance and support, no one will be able to help him. If He deprives someone of sustenance, no one will be able to sustain him. Section VI (22-23) Those who lead their lives while remaining a slave to their desires will never reach the real goal. Only they will reach this goal who remain on the right path. The Almighty has endowed people with the faculties of sight, hearing and reasoning so that people can remain on the right path by using them. But alas! very few people understand the worth of such favours. Section VII (24-27) The Almighty has spread man in this earth and He Himself shall definitely gather him one day. The Prophet (sws) is told to inform the disbelievers that only Allah knows when the Day of Judgement will come and that he himelf has no knowledge of its time of arrival; he has only been sent to warn them about it and not to inform them about its time of arrival. However, when the Day does arrive, the faces of the disbelievers will turn black with gloom. Section VIII (28-30) If these disbelievers are awaiting the change of fortunes for the Prophet (sws) and his Companions, and suppose that this change does happen, then why should they themselves rest assured? They shall certainly meet the dreadful fate they have been informed of.
This is the section where I explain how to do it.

The pf(4) packet filter has been updated to use rmlock(9) instead of rwlock(9), resulting in significant performance improvements. The SO_REUSEPORT_LB option has been added to the network stack, allowing multiple programs or threads to bind to the same port, and incoming connections load balanced using a hash function. Again, read the release notes for a full list, check out the errata notices. A big THANKS to the entire release engineering team and all developers involved in the release, much appreciated! ###Abandon Linux. Move to FreeBSD or Illumos If you use GNU/Linux and you are only on opensource, you may be doing it wrong. Here’s why. Is your company based on opensource based software only? Do you have a bunch of developers hitting some kind of server you have installed for them to “do their thing”? Being it for economical reasons (remember to donate), being it for philosophycal ones, you may have skipped good alternatives. The BSD’s and Illumos. I bet you are running some sort of Debian, openSuSE or CentOS. It’s very discouraging having entered into the IT field recently and discover many of the people you meet do not even recognise the name BSD. Naming Solaris seems like naming the evil itself. The problem being many do not know why. They can’t point anything specific other than it’s fading out. This has recently shown strong when Oracle officials have stated development for new features has ceased and almost 90 % of developers for Solaris have been layed off. AIX seems alien to almost everybody unless you have a white beard. And all this is silly. And here’s why. You are certainly missing two important features that FreeBSD and Illumos derivatives are enjoying. A full virtualization technology, much better and fully developed compared to the LXC containers in the Linux world, such as Jails on BSD, Zones in Solaris/Illumos, and the great ZFS file system which both share. You have probably heard of a new Linux filesystem named Btrfs, which by the way, development has been dropped from the Red Hat side. Trying to emulate ZFS, Oracle started developing Btrfs file system before they acquired Sun (the original developer of ZFS), and SuSE joined the effort as well as Red Hat. It is not as well developed as ZFS and it hasn’t been tested in production environments as extensively as the former has. That leaves some uncertainty on using it or not. Red Hat leaving it aside does add some more. Although some organizations have used it with various grades of success. But why is this anyhow interesting for a sysadmin or any organization? Well… FreeBSD (descendant of Berkeley UNIX) and SmartOS (based on Illumos) aglutinate some features that make administration easier, safer, faster and more reliable. The dream of any systems administrator. To start, the ZFS filesystem combines the typical filesystem with a volume manager. It includes protection against corruption, snapshots and copy-on-write clones, as well as volume manager. Jails is another interesting piece of technology. Linux folks usually associate this as a sort of chroot. It isn’t. It is somehow inspired by it but as you may know you can escape from a chroot environment with a blink of an eye. Jails are not called jails casually. The name has a purpose. Contain processes and programs within a defined and totally controlled environment. Jails appeared first in FreeBSD in the year 2000. Solaris Zones debuted on 2005 (now called containers) are the now proprietary version of those. There are some other technologies on Linux such as Btrfs or Docker. But they have some caveats. Btrfs hasn’t been fully developed yet and it’s hasn’t been proved as much in production environments as ZFS has. And some problems have arisen recently although the developers are pushing the envelope. At some time they will match ZFS capabilities for sure. Docker is growing exponentially and it’s one of the cool technologies of modern times. The caveat is, as before, the development of this technology hasn’t been fully developed. Unlike other virtualization technologies this is not a kernel playing on top of another kernel. This is virtualization at the OS level, meaning differentiated environments can coexist on a single host, “hitting” the same unique kernel which controls and shares the resources. The problem comes when you put Docker on top of any other virtualization technology such as KVM or Xen. It breaks the purpose of it and has a performance penalty. I have arrived into the IT field with very little knowledge, that is true. But what I see strikes me. Working in a bank has allowed me to see a big production environment that needs the highest of the availability and reliability. This is, sometimes, achieved by bruteforce. And it’s legitime and adequate. Redundancy has a reason and a purpose for example. But some other times it looks, it feels, like killing flies with cannons. More hardware, more virtual machines, more people, more of this, more of that. They can afford it, so they try to maintain the cost low but at the end of the day there is a chunky budget to back operations. But here comes reality. You’re not a bank and you need to squeeze your investment as much as possible. By using FreeBSD jails you can avoid the performance penalty of KVM or Xen virtualization. Do you use VMWare or Hyper-V? You can avoid both and gain in performance. Not only that, control and manageability are equal as before, and sometimes easier to administer. There are four ways to operate them which can be divided in two categories. Hardcore and Human Being. For the Hardcore use the FreeBSD handbook and investigate as much as you can. For the Human Being way there are three options to use. Ezjail, Iocage and CBSD which are frameworks or programs as you may call to manage jails. I personally use Iocage but I have also used Ezjail. How can you use jails on your benefit? Ever tried to configure some new software and failed miserably? You can have three different jails running at the same time with different configurations. Want to try a new configuration in a production piece of hardware without applying it on the final users? You can do that with a small jail while the production environment is on in another bigger, chunkier jail. Want to divide the hardware as a replica of the division of the team/s you are working with? Want to sell virtual machines with bare metal performance? Do you want to isolate some piece of critical software or even data in a more controlled environment? Do you have different clients and you want to use the same hardware but you want to avoid them seeing each other at the same time you maintain performance and reliability? Are you a developer and you have to have reliable and portable snapshots of your work? Do you want to try new options-designs without breaking your previous work, in a timeless fashion? You can work on something, clone the jail and apply the new ideas on the project in a matter of seconds. You can stop there, export the filesystem snapshot containing all the environment and all your work and place it on a thumbdrive to later import it on a big production system. Want to change that image properties such as the network stack interface and ip? This is just one command away from you. But what properties can you assign to a jail and how can I manage them you may be wondering. Hostname, disk quota, i/o, memory, cpu limits, network isolation, network virtualization, snapshots and the manage of those, migration and root privilege isolation to name a few. You can also clone them and import and export them between different systems. Some of these things because of ZFS. Iocage is a python program to manage jails and it takes profit from ZFS advantages. But FreeBSD is not Linux you may say. No it is not. There are no run levels. The systemd factor is out of this equation. This is so since the begginning. Ever wondered where did vi come from? The TCP/IP stack? Your beloved macOS from Apple? All this is coming from the FreeBSD project. If you are used to Linux your adaptation period with any BSD will be short, very short. You will almost feel at home. Used to packaged software using yum or apt-get? No worries. With pkgng, the package management tool used in FreeBSD has almost 27.000 compiled packages for you to use. Almost all software found on any of the important GNU/Linux distros can be found here. Java, Python, C, C++, Clang, GCC, Javascript frameworks, Ruby, PHP, MySQL and the major forks, etc. All this opensource software, and much more, is available at your fingertips. I am a developer and… frankly my time is money and I appreciate both much more than dealing with systems configuration, etc. You can set a VM using VMWare or VirtualBox and play with barebones FreeBSD or you can use TrueOS (a derivative) which comes in a server version and a desktop oriented one. The latter will be easier for you to play with. You may be doing this already with Linux. There is a third and very sensible option. FreeNAS, developed by iXSystems. It is FreeBSD based and offers all these technologies with a GUI. VMWare, Hyper-V? Nowadays you can get your hands off the CLI and get a decent, usable, nice GUI. You say you play on the cloud. The major players already include FreeBSD in their offerings. You can find it in Amazon AWS or Azure (with official Microsoft support contracts too!). You can also find it in DigitalOcean and other hosting providers. There is no excuse. You can use it at home, at the office, with old or new hardware and in the cloud as well. You can even pay for a support contract to use it. Joyent, the developers of SmartOS have their own cloud with different locations around the globe. Have a look on them too. If you want the original of ZFS and zones you may think of Solaris. But it’s fading away. But it really isn’t. When Oracle bouth Sun many people ran away in an stampide fashion. Some of the good folks working at Sun founded new projects. One of these is Illumos. Joyent is a company formed by people who developed these technologies. They are a cloud operator, have been recently bought by Samsung and have a very competent team of people providing great tech solutions. They have developed an OS, called SmartOS (based on Illumos) with all these features. The source from this goes back to the early days of UNIX. Do you remember the days of OpenSolaris when Sun opensourced the crown jewels? There you have it. A modern opensource UNIX operating system with the roots in their original place and the head planted on today’s needs. In conclusion. If you are on GNU/Linux and you only use opensource software you may be doing it wrong. And missing goodies you may need and like. Once you put your hands on them, trust me, you won’t look back. And if you have some “old fashioned” admins who know Solaris, you can bring them to a new profitable and exciting life with both systems. Still not convinced? Would you have ever imagined Microsoft supporting Linux? Even loving it? They do love now FreeBSD. And not only that, they provide their own image in the Azure Cloud and you can get Microsoft support, payed support if you want to use the platform on Azure. Ain’t it… surprising? Convincing at all? PS: I haven’t mentioned both softwares, FreeBSD and SmartOS do have a Linux translation layer. This means you can run Linux binaries on them and the program won’t cough at all. Since the ABI stays stable the only thing you need to run a Linux binary is a translation between the different system calls and the libraries. Remember POSIX? Choose your poison and enjoy it. ###A partly-cloudy IPsec VPN Audience I’m assuming that readers have at least a basic knowledge of TCP/IP networking and some UNIX or UNIX-like systems, but not necessarily OpenBSD or FreeBSD. This post will therefore be light on details that aren’t OS specific and are likely to be encountered in normal use (e.g., how to use vi or another text editor.) For more information on these topics, read Absolute FreeBSD (3ed.) by Michael W. Lucas. Overview I’m redoing my DigitalOcean virtual machines (which they call droplets). My requirements are: VPN Road-warrior access, so I can use private network resources from anywhere. A site-to-site VPN, extending my home network to my VPSes. Hosting for public and private network services. A proxy service to provide a public IP address to services hosted at home. The last item is on the list because I don’t actually have a public IP address at home; my firewall’s external address is in the RFC 1918 space, and the entire apartment building shares a single public IPv4 address.1 (IPv6? Don’t I wish.) The end-state network will include one OpenBSD droplet providing firewall, router, and VPN services; and one FreeBSD droplet hosting multiple jailed services. I’ll be providing access via these droplets to a NextCloud instance at home. A simple NAT on the DO router droplet isn’t going to work, because packets going from home to the internet would exit through the apartment building’s connection and not through the VPN. It’s possible that I could do work around this issue with packet tagging using the pf firewall, but HAProxy is simple to configure and unlikely to result in hard-to-debug problems. relayd is also an option, but doesn’t have the TLS parsing abilities of HAProxy, which I’ll be using later on. Since this system includes jails running on a VPS, and they’ve got RFC 1918 addresses, I want them reachable from my home network. Once that’s done, I can access the private address space from anywhere through a VPN connection to the cloudy router. The VPN itself will be of the IPsec variety. IPsec is the traditional enterprise VPN standard, and is even used for classified applications, but has a (somewhat-deserved) reputation for complexity, but recent versions of OpenBSD turn down the difficulty by quite a bit. The end-state network should look like: https://d33wubrfki0l68.cloudfront.net/0ccf46fb057e0d50923209bb2e2af0122637e72d/e714e/201812-cloudy/endstate.svg This VPN both separates internal network traffic from public traffic and uses encryption to prevent interception or tampering. Once traffic has been encrypted, decrypting it without the key would, as Bruce Schneier once put it, require a computer built from something other than matter that occupies something other than space. Dyson spheres and a frakton of causality violation would possibly work, as would mathemagical technology that alters the local calendar such that P=NP.2 Black-bag jobs and/or suborning cloud provider employees doesn’t quite have that guarantee of impossibility, however. If you have serious security requirements, you’ll need to do better than a random blog entry. ##News Roundup KLEAK: Practical Kernel Memory Disclosure Detection Modern operating systems such as NetBSD, macOS, and Windows isolate their kernel from userspace programs to increase fault tolerance and to protect against malicious manipulations [10]. User space programs have to call into the kernel to request resources, via system calls or ioctls. This communication between user space and kernel space crosses a security boundary. Kernel memory disclosures - also known as kernel information leaks - denote the inadvertent copying of uninitialized bytes from kernel space to user space. Such disclosed memory may contain cryptographic keys, information about the kernel memory layout, or other forms of secret data. Even though kernel memory disclosures do not allow direct exploitation of a system, they lay the ground for it. We introduce KLEAK, a simple approach to dynamically detect kernel information leaks. Simply said, KLEAK utilizes a rudimentary form of taint tracking: it taints kernel memory with marker values, lets the data travel through the kernel and scans the buffers exchanged between the kernel and the user space for these marker values. By using compiler instrumentation and rotating the markers at regular intervals, KLEAK significantly reduces the number of false positives, and is able to yield relevant results with little effort. Our approach is practically feasible as we prove with an implementation for the NetBSD kernel. A small performance penalty is introduced, but the system remains usable. In addition to implementing KLEAK in the NetBSD kernel, we applied our approach to FreeBSD 11.2. In total, we detected 21 previously unknown kernel memory disclosures in NetBSD-current and FreeBSD 11.2, which were fixed subsequently. As a follow-up, the projects’ developers manually audited related kernel areas and identified dozens of other kernel memory disclosures. The remainder of this paper is structured as follows. Section II discusses the bug class of kernel memory disclosures. Section III presents KLEAK to dynamically detect instances of this bug class. Section IV discusses the results of applying KLEAK to NetBSD-current and FreeBSD 11.2. Section V reviews prior research. Finally, Section VI concludes this paper. ###How To Create Official Synth Repo System Environment Make sure /usr/dports is updated and that it contains no cruft (git pull; git status). Remove any cruft. Make sure your ‘synth’ is up-to-date ‘pkg upgrade synth’. If you already updated your system you may have to build synth from scratch, from /usr/dports/ports-mgmt/synth. Make sure /etc/make.conf is clean. Update /usr/src to the current master, make sure there is no cruft in it Do a full buildworld, buildkernel, installkernel and installworld Reboot After the reboot, before proceeding, run ‘uname -a’ and make sure you are now on the desired release or development kernel. Synth Environment /usr/local/etc/synth/ contains the synth configuration. It should contain a synth.ini file (you may have to rename the template), and you will have to create or edit a LiveSystem-make.conf file. System requirements are hefty. Just linking chromium alone eats at least 30GB, for example. Concurrent c++ compiles can eat up to 2GB per process. We recommend at least 100GB of SSD based swap space and 300GB of free space on the filesystem. synth.ini should contain this. Plus modify the builders and jobs to suit your system. With 128G of ram, 30/30 or 40/25 works well. If you have 32G of ram, maybe 8/8 or less. ; Take care when hand editing! [Global Configuration] profileselected= LiveSystem [LiveSystem] Operatingsystem= DragonFly Directorypackages= /build/synth/livepackages Directoryrepository= /build/synth/livepackages/All Directoryportsdir= /build/synth/dports Directoryoptions= /build/synth/options Directorydistfiles= /usr/distfiles Directorybuildbase= /build/synth/build Directorylogs= /build/synth/logs Directoryccache= disabled Directorysystem= / Numberofbuilders= 30 Maxjobsperbuilder= 30 Tmpfsworkdir= true Tmpfslocalbase= true Displaywithncurses= true leverageprebuilt= false LiveSystem-make.conf should contain one line to restrict licensing to only what is allowed to be built as a binary package: LICENSESACCEPTED= NONE Make sure there is no other cruft in /usr/local/etc/synth/ In the example above, the synth working dirs are in “/build/synth”. Make sure the base directories exist. Clean out any cruft for a fresh build from-scratch: rm -rf /build/synth/livepackages/* rm -rf /build/synth/logs mkdir /build/synth/logs Run synth everything. I recommend doing this in a ‘screen’ session in case you lose your ssh session (assuming you are ssh’d into the build machine). (optionally start a screen session) synth everything A full synth build takes over 24 hours to run on a 48-core box, around 12 hours to run on a 64-core box. On a 4-core/8-thread box it will take at least 3 days. There will be times when swap space is heavily used. If you have not run synth before, monitor your memory and swap loads to make sure you have configured the jobs properly. If you are overloading the system, you may have to ^C the synth run, reduce the jobs, and start it again. It will pick up where it left off. When synth finishes, let it rebuild the database. You then have a working binary repo. It is usually a good idea to run synth several times to pick up any stuff it couldn’t build the first time. Each of these incremental runs may take a few hours, depending on what it tries to build. ###Interview with founder and maintainer of GhostBSD, Eric Turgeon Thanks you Eric for taking part. To start off, could you tell us a little about yourself, just a bit of background? How did you become interested in open source? When and how did you get interested in the BSD operating systems? Coach Jim Johnson: Based on what transpired in a few short moments in early 2006, Coach Jim Johnson is now an authority on the subject of realizing your dreams. This time On the Road at the 2016 ABA Annual Meeting, host Joe Patrice speaks with North Carolina House of Representatives Speaker Pro Tempore Paul Stam about the Post-Shelby Voter and Election Laws panel. Paul states that the panel talked mostly about the North Carolina voter reform resulting from the Shelby County v. Holder case. He explains that the North Carolina voter ID law is virtually identical to one that was approved in Texas a few days ago and wonders why the Department of Justice is taking two different positions in two different circuits. Paul recalls that when they attempted redistricting for Congress, while Section V was still in effect, a U.S. Supreme Court decision said that they had to do majority minority districts if they could. He juxtaposes this decision with the Department of Justice’s later disapproval of their redistricting as a result of a subsequent case to illustrate how difficult redistricting can be with laws changing every 2-3 years. Paul reveals that one of the most disappointing parts of the ruling for him was its reform of their early voting and that under this Fourth Circuit ruling they are going to have to go back to more voting days, but with shorter operating hours (thus making voting less convenient for all voters). He closes the interview with reflections on his decade of service in leadership and a brief discussion of what he has planned for the future. Representative Paul Stam is currently serving his eighth (and last) term in the North Carolina House of Representatives. He was first elected to that position in 1989 and again in 2003. He has served as the House Republican Leader (2007-2010), the House Majority Leader (2011-2012), and is the Speaker Pro Tem (2013-present).
Make your dreams come true! Find out how to be an effective leader, and how you can change lives. Coach Jim Johnson is an authority on the subject of realizing your dreams. His public speaking emphasizes the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship. He’s also the Author of A Coach and a Miracle; Life Lessons from a Man Who Believed in an Autistic Boy.” Coach Johnson spent 30 years developing winning high school basketball teams, including taking over three losing varsity programs and turning them into winners in short periods of time. But he’s most famous for one particular game. In February 2006, Coach Johnson made the kindhearted gesture of inserting his autistic manager, Jason McElwain, now known to the world as J-Mac into Greece Athena High School’s final home game, which the Trojans won 79-43. J-Mac scored 20 points in just over four minutes, including six three-point baskets, to become an instant national celebrity. The Trojans, under Coach Johnson’s guidance, went on to win the Section V title for 2006, another sectional win in 2007, and their third straight win in 2008. Join Dr Jo Anne White, author and host of Power Your Life, as they discuss Autism Advocates, being an effective leader, and how to be successful.
In this edition of ROC Sports Talk, the Democrat and Chronicle's new sports podcast, Sal Maiorana, Jeff Diveronica, and Leo Roth open the show with a discussion about the Buffalo Bills and what they'll be looking for when they go to the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis next week. In our full-court press section, we will discuss Syracuse's pretty brutal 72-58 loss to Louisville, and look ahead to the final four games when the Orange may make or break their chances of getting to the NCAA Tournament. And we'll also take a look at the overgrown Section V boys and girls basketball tournaments, and whether they should trim back the field and not allow every team to participate. And then in the shootout round, the guys will share a hot button take, but you'll have to listen to find out what they are. The sports staff at the D&C hopes you enjoy the show, and please subscribe to the podcast on iTunes and Stitcher where you can hear all of the D&C podcasts. We think you'll be glad you did.

A Coach and a Miracle Coach Johnson has developed winning high-school basketball teams for 27 years, taking over three losing varsity programs and turning them into winners in short periods of time. Of his 362 career victories, one in particular will surely never be duplicated. On Feb. 15, 2006, Coach Johnson made the kind hearted gesture on inserting his autistic manager, Jason McElwain, now known to the world as J-Mac into Greece Athena High School’s final home game, which the Trojans won 79-43. J-Mac scored 20 points in just over four minutes, including six three-point baskets, to become an instant national celebrity. Coach Johnson, also, was featured in major news outlets around the country. To make the Hollywood ending complete, Greece Athena captured the first Section V title of Coach Johnson’s career a few weeks later. A second sectional crown followed in 2007, and Coach Johnson then coached the Trojans to their third straight league title in 2008 by posting a perfect 12-0 record in league play, netting Coach of the Year honors. His success continued in 2009 with a league co-championship (34-2 league record over a three-season stretch) and third sectional title in four years, with an overall record of 20-5, his first-ever trip to the state quarterfinals and more Coach of the Year accolades. In the recently concluded 2012-2013 season, his Trojans won the sectional title for the fourth time in eight years. Coach Johnson has made a number of radio and television appearances, including the Oprah Winfrey and Jim Rome shows. The Athena team was also paid a visit at school by NBA legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson. J-Mac’s magic moment won the ESPY for “Best Sports Moment” at the ESPN awards show later that year.
