Following the purchase of a Great War book owned by author and veteran Henry Williamson, we explore something of Williamson's life, the Writing Hut where he crafted his work and look at what the book was, and how it connects is to the battlefields of the Great War. Support the show
Your dynamic duo return with an episode heralding the new season. Lewin (The Southern One) talks about the David Villers memorial 2k, letting slip that he at 46 can come within one second of what Aaron (The Northern One) could do at 36 - damn his freakishly freakish genetics. We talk of salmons and seals, establishing that not only was Henry Williamson a Fascist, but he knew nothing of the salmon Jurgen Grobler lurking off Tynemouth for his returning charges. Come on, Salar! Let's see those leaps! We ask if dolphins are really cute and brainy or if they're just dead-eyed 500lb killing machines with good propaganda? Hint: if your family ever invites you to share a dolphin swimming experience, be afraid, be very afraid! We then herald something of a development for Broken Oars Podcast as we welcome our first sponsor to the pod. Manscaped is a Californian company specialising in highly-designed, highly-effective male manscaping and hygiene products. For those watching on Youtube, and those listening, we do our first unboxing and trial runs of the Manscape Performance Package. Lewin gets smelly with sandalwood and citrus and Aaron tries the best pair of boxers he's ever worn as we try everything they sent us. It's a trial period between ourselves and Manscaped, lasting from 12th September to 12th November to see if we're a good fit for each other - during which time you'll receive 20% off all Manscaped products and free shipping using the promotional code: brokenoars at the manscaped website. In this episode we look at the writer Henry Williamson, best known for his nature writing and Tarka The Otter novel, but in the 1950s he began to publish 'A Chronicle of Ancient Sunlight', some fifteen novels, five of which cover the Great War. We look at his life, his war, and his work as a writer, a forgotten author of the First World War.The Henry Williamson Society website. Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/oldfrontline)

I’m Jim McKeown, welcome to Likely Stories, a weekly review of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. I have always been fascinated by nature--especially animals. When I came across Tarka the Otter by Henry Williamson, I could not resist. I had never heard of Williamson, but the intro had a vast selection of stories by him. The New York Review Books also provided a brief biography. “Henry Williamson was born in Brockley, London. In January of 1914, he enlisted in the British Army, and by November he was fighting in the trenches on the Western front. He worked his way up to Lieutenant by 1916, and he fell sick from a gas attack in 1917. Later he wrote for a local paper. He died in 1977.
Tim Pears, a writer rooted in the landscape of Devon, takes Slightly Foxed to the West Country. From working at his local library and reading an author a week instead of taking his A Levels to winning the Hawthornden Prize for his first novel, by way of spells as a farm labourer, nursing assistant and night porter, Tim Pears has written eleven novels, watched blacksmiths at work, walked the routes of his characters, balanced research with imagination and chronicled the past as a realist rather than a romantic. We also travel through the magazine’s archives, along the rivers Taw and Torridge, to uncover the man behind Tarka the Otter, and there are the usual recommendations for reading off the beaten track. Please find links to books, articles, and further reading listed below. The digits in brackets following each listing refer to the minute and second they are mentioned. Henry Williamson is one of my favourite authors. He had an unsentimental and pure view of nature which informed his general views on life and enabled him to write some of the most widely celebrated books on animals and the English countryside every written. For several reasons, I feel a personal connection to his work, which I shall explain in this stream.
Where, and how, does nature writing intersect with architectural criticism? Urban exploration? Hauntology? Nationalism and fascism? This week, Tom Overton talks to writer and Influx Press co-founder Gary Budden about how his collection 'Hollow Shores' blends nature writing and weird fiction, his collaborations with filmmaker and fellow Influx author Adam Scovell and illustrator Maxim Peter Griffin, how writers as aesthetically and politically diverse as Derek Jarman and Henry Williamson have represented the English landscape, and more.
