A Christmas Miracle in 1944: In the midst of World War II, a German mother and her son brought together American and German soldiers for a night of peace and humanity in a tiny cabin in the Hürtgen Forest. These stories remind us of the power of hope and kindness, even in the darkest of times. Wishing you and your loved ones a Merry Christmas filled with joy, love, and goodwill. It's Christmas, Wednesday, December 25th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes written by Jonathan Clark and heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. Filling in for Adam McManus I'm Ean Leppin. Christians Face Persecution During Christmas Around the world, Christians face increased persecution during Christmas season. Armed men killed 14 Christians in Nigeria on Sunday. The believers had just celebrated a Christmas carol service at the Evangelical Church Winning All. In Vietnam, officials arrested Christian villagers over the weekend for getting ready to celebrate Christmas. Authorities had told Christians they would face arrest if they celebrated Christmas or attended non-sanctioned churches. And yesterday, officials in Nepal arrested a pastor just for giving gifts. Pastor Janmajya Bhattarai had given educational materials, clothes, and gifts to underprivileged children in the area. During this festive season, Hebrews 13:3 reminds us, “Remember the prisoners as if chained with them—those who are mistreated—since you yourselves are in the body also.” Honda and Nissan Consider Merging Japanese automakers Honda and Nissan announced Monday they are in talks to merge by 2026. If completed, the merger would create the world's third largest car manufacturer by sales after Toyota and Volkswagen. Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe said, “The rise of Chinese automakers and new players has changed the car industry quite a lot. We have to build up capabilities to fight with them by 2030, otherwise we'll be beaten.” Ohio School District to Settle with a Christian Teacher Over Unlawful Termination In the United States, an Ohio school district agreed to a $450,000 settlement with a Christian teacher last Wednesday. The Jackson Local School District forced Vivian Geraghty to resign a couple years ago. The teacher refused to use biologically incorrect pronouns for transgender students based on her Christian beliefs. Logan Spena with Alliance Defending Freedom responded to the favorable settlement for Geraghty. He said, “No school official can force a teacher to set her religious beliefs aside in order to keep her job. . . . The First Amendment prohibits that abuse of power, and Jackson Local School District officials have learned that comes at a steep cost.” Trump Promises to End "Transgender Lunacy" President-elect Donald Trump promised to end “transgender lunacy” on day one of his second term. Listen to his comments from a speech he gave Sunday at Turning Point USA's America Fest conference. TRUMP: “With the stroke of my pen, on day one, we are going to stop the transgender lunacy.” [Crowd cheers] “And I will sign executive orders to end child sexual mutilation. Get transgender out of the military and out of our elementary schools and middle schools and high schools.” Trump also said he would keep men out of women's sports, stating, “It will be the official policy of the United States government that there are only two genders: male and female.” Most Popular Bible Verses During Christmas Lifeway Research released data from the Bible app YouVersion on the most popular Bible verses during Christmas. Popular verses include the narrative of Christ's birth post also verses from the Psalms and Old Testament prophecies. The most popular Bible verses during the Christmas season are Luke 2:11-14 and Matthew 1:21. Matthew 1:21 says, “She will give birth to a son, and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” The Christmas Truce of World War I And finally, on this day in history, the Christmas Truce took place between the Germans and the Allies in World War I. On December 25, 1914, Captain Robert Hamilton, a lieutenant with the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, made this entry into his diary: “A day unique in the world's history. I met the [German] officer and we arranged a local armistice for 48 hours. As far as I can gather, this effort of ours extended itself throughout the whole line. Soldiers on both sides met [by the] hundreds and exchanged greetings and gifts.” It all started when the Germans heard the Allied troops singing Christmas Carols on the other side of the line. A German Lieutenant, Johannes Niemann, reported that “We started trading everything we had: tobacco, chocolate, schnapps, ribbons. At one point, a Scottish bloke came outside with a football. It was the start of a real football match, with caps as goals.” The temporary truce took place at Ploegsteert Wood on the Western Front, near Flanders. Something remarkable happened as British, French, and German soldiers shivered in their trenches on Christmas Eve along a 20-mile-long stretch of the Western Front in 1914. Instead of killing one another, they met in no-man's-land to fraternize. They shared songs and cigarettes rather than bullets and bombshells. In this episode, historian Terri Blom Crocker separates history from memory, myth from reality concerning the Christmas Truce of 1914. The myths say more about man's uses of memory than the First World War itself. Further reading: The Christmas Truce: Myth, Memory, and the First World War by Terri Blom Crocker

Harvey and Jim reflect a little on the last year but primarily look at the importance of VFP radio/podcasts along with other independent news sources as our national media fail to provide us the information that we need to take on the powers and the problems that are engulfing the world. We look at media failures from covering up the Christmas Truce, to a Palestinian lawsuit, Admiral Buchanan talking about winning a nuclear war, and the most listened-to news outlet worldwide letting us down by covering for genocide. Then we turn to the VFP power structure to provide us with some hope and direction. VFP President Susan Schnall, Vice President Josh Shurley, and Program Coordinator Mike Ferner provide us with information and tools on how we need to approach this coming year as a member of VFP but also as an organization that is looking to collaborate with other peace organizations to raise our voices and efforts to make a difference.
On this day, in 1914, a very important moment happened when the factions of the First World War laid down their weapons to celebrate Christmas together. In this episode, I speak with Dr Daniël Maritz, theologist, lecturer and head of the NP van Wyk Louw Centre at Akademia about the significance of this event. But more than that, we discuss how and why Christianity could be described as the cornerstone of Western civilization. You've probably heard of the famous Christmas Truce of 1914 between the trenches of the British and German soldiers. These were indeed brave men. But that was not the only such event: there were desertions, mutinies, and fraternizations. Christmas Eve, 1914. A cold, crisp, moonlit night in Flanders.British and German soldiers are dug into opposing trenches in a hellish shelled-out landscape, strewn with rotting corpses. But an unfamiliar sound is heard from the German trenches: “Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht” is being sung to welcome the birth of Christ. The British respond with their own carols, seasonal greetings are exchanged across the trenches and troops tentatively move out into No Man's Land. Gifts are exchanged, friends are made and then, allegedly, a football match ensued! Is this mythic tale - a staple of primary school history lessons - actually true? Or is it mere legend? Was any football really played? If so, is it perhaps the most significant match of all time? From playful punisher characters who will gleefully slit open German children's bellies to more modern urban legends about Nativity plays gone wrong or a deadly Dad prank. It was called the war to end all wars. World War I, also known as the Great War, started in 1914 after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria. His murder fuelled the rising tensions between many nations of Europe and catapulted them into war. The war began in August with great enthusiasm on all sides. Young men rushed to enlist, convinced they would be home by Christmas. But by December, the initial hopes for a quick victory had faded, replaced by the grim reality of trench warfare. As the cold winter of 1914 settled over the Western Front and Christmas approached, the mood on both sides was sombre. Many soldiers were experiencing their first Christmas away from home, and the contrast between the season's message of peace and goodwill and the daily reality of war and death was stark. But few could have imagined the scene that would unfold on Christmas Day 1914. Join me as we visit the trenches on the Western Front and investigate the day the guns fell silent.
Welcome to Day 2524 of Wisdom-Trek. Thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom Day 2524 – Second Week of Advent – Living in Peace, Daily Putnam Church Message – 12/08/2024 Living in Peace, Daily Last week was the first Sunday of Advent, and our focus was “Living in Hope, Daily. “We were reminded that Hope is alive because Jesus is alive. May we carry this truth with us this Advent season, lighting the way for others to see His love and faithfulness. This week is the Second Sunday of Advent: “The Candle of Peace” in a message titled “Living in Peace, Daily.” During the weeks of Advent, I want to slow life down a bit so we can truly take time to reflect on the purpose of the Advent season. I will also tie in some Christmas traditions in each message so we can reflect on the meaning of some traditions we practice during this blessed time. Opening Prayer: Lord, we come before You today with hearts open to receive the peace You promise. As we light the second candle of Advent, the Candle of Peace, it reminds us of the deep, lasting peace that can only be found in Jesus. In this season of anticipation and reflection, help us quiet our hearts and place our trust fully in You. In Jesus's name, we pray, Amen. Introduction: The Meaning of Advent Peace Today is the second Sunday of Advent, and we focus on peace. Advent is a time of waiting and preparation, and the peace we remember today is not just an absence of conflict but a deep, abiding calm that comes from knowing Christ. Peace may feel elusive amid the busyness and sometimes stress of the holiday season. But true peace, the kind that quiets our hearts, is not tied to our circumstances or feelings. It's rooted in Jesus, the Prince of Peace, who entered our world to reconcile us with God and with one another. The Promise of Peace in Scripture (Bulletin Insert) The Bible's understanding of peace goes beyond what we often think of as peace today. It's more than silence or a moment of calm; it's a completeness, wholeness, and harmony only God can provide. This peace is found in the Hebrew word shalom, which means completeness or well-being. Scripture Reading: Isaiah 9:6-7 (NLT) “For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His government and its peace will never end. He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David for all eternity.” The prophet Isaiah spoke these words hundreds of years before Jesus' birth, yet they describe who Jesus would be to His people: the Prince of Peace. This title is not just a name; it's a role and an identity. Jesus didn't just bring peace—He is peace. Through Him, we find true harmony with God, ourselves, and others. Illustration: The Christmas Truce of 1914 One remarkable story you may be familiar with that reflects this peace is the Christmas Truce of 1914, during World War I. For a brief time, soldiers on both sides put down their weapons and celebrated Christmas together. They sang carols, exchanged small gifts, and...

What did you think of today's message?Have you ever considered the courage it takes to fully trust in a plan so much bigger than yourself? Join us as we explore the profound faith and courage of Mary and Joseph, guided by the voices of Charlotte and Eli, who breathe life into the scriptures of Luke and Matthew. Together, we uncover the incredible journey these iconic figures undertook, guided by angelic encounters that demanded immense faith amid fear and uncertainty. Through a charming illustration by Eli, who demonstrates everyday faith with the simple act of sitting on a stool, we find ourselves contemplating the unconscious trust that shapes our daily lives. As the hustle of the Christmas season envelops us, take a moment to pause and find peace with a blessing from Dr. Kate Bowler, embracing gratitude in the midst of chaos. Through nostalgic reflections, we draw unexpected parallels between the familiar Preamble to the U.S. Constitution and the timeless Nativity story, urging a fresh perspective on Jesus' birth. By examining the real human experiences of Mary and Joseph, we reveal the beauty and significance of their faith, even against a backdrop of political tension and danger.Reflect on the transformative power of saying 'yes' to God's call, as illustrated by Mary and Joseph's unwavering obedience and trust. Their example inspires us to consider the potential transformations in our own lives if we fully commit to trusting a higher purpose. From the historical moments of peace like the Christmas Truce during World War I to the grace and joy brought by Jesus's birth, we are reminded of the duality of faith and fear we live with and how embracing a greater purpose can lead to hope and renewal. Join us in celebrating the Christmas story, inviting a renewed spirit of faith and trust this holiday season. This episode was originally recorded & released in Dec. 2014, the first Christmas after I started doing the Dangerous History Podcast. Here it is, reissued with a new intro, 10 years later. One-hundred-and-one Christmases ago, in the cold, damp, muddy ditches of the Western Front, the rank-and-file of the Allied and German armies spontaneously set aside their hatreds to take a break from mass-murdering each other, much to the dismay of their so-called 'leaders.' When's the last time we truly paused to consider how our faith bridges the chasms of politics and social discord? Imagine a church not just surviving but thriving in a world that feels more divided by the day. Join us as we celebrate the incredible growth of the First Christian Church and the unwavering dedication of Pastor Nate, his staff, and volunteers, who cultivate a sanctuary where everyone belongs, regardless of the political whirlwind outside. We draw inspiration from the teachings of Jesus and his disciples, whose unity despite natural rivalries offers us a roadmap for embracing diversity and differing perspectives to spread the gospel.Ever wonder how early Christians overcame their differences to unite as a single body of faith? We discuss how faith in Jesus transcends political affiliations and societal divides, urging believers to prioritize their spiritual commitments over worldly loyalties. As we navigate shifts in political landscapes, including the election of President-elect Donald Trump, the enduring strength of the church throughout history serves as a beacon, reminding us to place our faith in God's sovereignty to guide us through life's challenges. With media-driven divisiveness threatening personal relationships, particularly within the church, how can we maintain unity in the Spirit? Our conversation emphasizes humility, patience, and love as cornerstones for fostering unity. By sharing the powerful story of the Christmas Truce of 1914, we highlight the potential for meaningful change through community engagement and prioritizing relationships over political differences. As the holiday season nears, we call on listeners to apologize, reconcile, and let the love of Christ shine brighter than any political stance, keeping the spirit of peace and unity alive in our communities.

On Christmas Eve, 1914, something remarkable happened on the western front during the First World War. Soldiers in the trenches on both sides of no man's land ceased fighting. Not only did they stop fighting, but they came out of their trenches to meet each other to celebrate Christmas. It has become one of the most mythologized events of the war and one of the oddest events in military history.
