Having made our way to the Rockies, now is the time to dismiss doubts as to what purposes Webb might intend. Not much travel along traditional coordinates in this conversation, instead we meet the waterheads of the Traverse clan and contemplate the molds in which the bonds between workers and those rascals who despise all shapes of mandate were set. Just try and keep your hat on, heavier things have been seen blown away in these mountains.Next episode: Pages 97-118 (End of Part One)If you like what we're doing and want to support the show, please consider making a donation on Ko-Fi. On episode 238 of The AwardsWatch Podcast, Executive Editor Ryan McQuade is joined by AwardsWatch contributor Josh Parham to review the latest film releases, Kinds of Kindness and Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1, as well as discuss their Top 5 Westerns. While A Quiet Place: Day One was dominating the box office this past weekend, two other releases caught the attention of the AW team, Kinds of Kindness and Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1, both of which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. For Kinds of Kindness, we find acclaimed director Yorgos Lanthimos returning to the big screen with his follow up to Poor Things with a nearly three-hour anthology film with an all-star cast lead by Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, Hong Chau, Margaret Qualley, and more that focuses on three separate stories that center around the idea of control. In the case of Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1, we see the big screen return, and gamble, of director Kevin Costner, with a three hour sweeping epic set in the old west that takes place over five different storylines. Ryan and Josh (who saw both films at Cannes) break down their reactions to both films, the pros and cons of both, and whether they think they will dive into the remaining chapters of Horizon and what they hope to see in Lanthimos' next film coming out next fall. In the back half of the episode, the duo dive into a Top 5 based on the western genre, inspired by the release of Horizon. One of the oldest genres in the history of cinema, the western is one that speaks to the roots and fabric of America, while also being one to speak brilliantly of how our current world can be reflected so bold, brash, and violent as our past. This makes for the perfect conversation to talk about some of the best films in not just the genre, but some of greatest films of all time. Mentioned in this discussion were films like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Unforgiven, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, Once Upon a Time in the West, McCabe and Mrs. Miller, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, and so many more. You can listen to The AwardsWatch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 2h18m. Ah, to be an outlaw in the wild west. Got nothing but a crew to back you up. Like really nothing. As one my favorite criminals Neil McCauley once said, "Don't let yourself get attached to anything you are not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds flat if you feel the heat around the corner." They were living this life. These guys slept outside and had like one outfit. No wonder they were desperate for some cash. Crazy that capitalism was what got them all in the end. I'm pretty sure that's the main point of both of these films, "The Assassinations of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" (written and directed by Andrew Dominik) as well as James' Mangolds remake of the 1957 classic, "3:10 to Yuma". And Heat too (not Heat 2) for that matter.   Joining the conversation this week are Daniel King (@dkingbooksla), author of "An Eye for Killing" and "Table Scraps" as well as Quinn Shields (@quinnshields) of The Fools Journey Podcast (@thefoolsjourneypod).   (0:00) Intro (7:15) The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (1:00:38) 3:10 to Yuma

This week on Remainders, we talk the 2007 gem The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Partially forgotten and possibly overshadowed by No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood upon its release, Assassination is absolutely an essential modern western. Brad Pitt plays Jesse James who is put on a pedestal by Casey Affleck's Robert Ford. As Ford idolizes and fawns over James and tries to become one of the gang, he learns the man and the myth do not align. A story about paranoia and disillusionment that is both poetic and dreamlike, elevated by Roger Deakins' cinematography and Nick Cave and Warren Ellis' epic score.Other topics include the woes of streaming, Kurt Russell battling Godzilla, what makes for a great film score, the sad Affleck brothers, and difficulties with tongue twister movie titles.Songs of the WeekBlame Brett by The BeachesReady Steady Go by Solid State RadioFrank and Jesse James by Warren ZevonRemainders Jukebox PlaylistWebsiteFacebookInstagramYouTubeTwitter

This week, the guys tackle the criminally underseen American Western from 2007 (possibly one of the greatest years in cinema) - The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Based on the book of the same name, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, chronicles…you guessed it…the assassination of Jesse James. Even with its modest budget, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford failed to recoup its production budget and was only given a very limited theatrical release. Some critics, however, thought it was one of the best films of the year and this little seen Western received two academy award nominations. In this newest History Impossible conversation, I'm speaking with Greg Zink, the host of the Smoke Filled Rooms podcast, a new and up-and-coming show that gives us a deep dive into political true crime. I've been following Greg since he started his show in early 2022, beginning with a series on the Nuremberg Trials, and when he tackled a topic I had been considering doing myself ever since I threatened all of you with a return to Hollywood's scandalous history—namely, the death (and life) of Marilyn Monroe—I invited him onto History Impossible to discuss both it and the recent divisive Andrew Dominik (director of the sublime The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford) pseudo-biopic of Marilyn Monroe, 2022's Blonde. In addition to discussing that film, we also examined how it took pretty decisive aim against Hollywood as it currently exists by highlighting the scum-baggery of Hollywood in the 1950s and 1960s (needless to say, controversial opinions—mostly my own—are voiced). We also examine how the film both succeeds and fails as a depiction of Marilyn Monroe's complexity as a human being, and how, in showing the problematic relationship Monroe had with JFK, essentially manages to toe the line of actual slander/libel (though it doesn't stop us from raking the Kennedy family over the coals later on). Following that discussion we delve into the mysterious circumstances surrounding Monroe's death that Greg so expertly explored in his own five-part series.Needless to say, it's a fun, controversial, and ultimately tragic ride (given the subject matter). But it was also a very enlightening and interesting conversation for me, given Greg's attention to detail in such a notorious potential case. You may never look at Hollywood the same way again.…History Impossible has been made possible by the following generous supporters on Patreon, Substack, and PayPal. Man, that Jesse's a dick. But he does, indeed, have the ingredients. Here we speak on the legendary legend and cold reality of Jesse James. We've got strong feels that casting Brad Pitt (MO boy) as Jesse James (MO boy) was a good move. And we're loving Casey Affleck as Bob Ford. Furthermore, let us not overlook Casey's beautiful glass skin, my brothers and sisters. HIS SKIN. We hit on a few burning questions: Do they even make outlaws like they used to? Do you brush your teeth nekkid? A blumpkin in the privy?! Tangents include fun Hollywood couples, Chris Rock's orgasms, and vabbing. And…Snaturals(TM) are born!

With The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford and Killing Them Softly, it could be said that director Andrew Dominik specialized in making box-office bombs that were only later discovered to be works of genius. According to Netflix's numbers however, he broke that trend with his next film, gathering 37,340,000 viewing hours...but unfortunately, that movie was also the most widely hated, critically savaged release of the year: the Ana de Armas starrer Blonde!  Will MG go with the crowd on this one, or has Dominik made another secret classic?

Sarah finally caved and watched Ryan Murphy's Jeffrey Dahmer series, the second most-popular show in Netflix history. (Can you guess the first?). It was difficult viewing, if also able to inspire a kind of love for one of Dahmer's victims. As she and Nancy discuss, the reasons to watch/not watch these shows are complicated. Is it possible to humanize victims who met a most inhumane end? Who gets to profit from misery, and what, if anything, do creators of dramatized true crime owe to those whose real lives were forever scarred? Nancy instead watched part of the Dahmer documentary, and she and Sarah compare notes on fictional vs. nonfictional tragedy. Did Alex Jones learn the meaning of “fuck around and find out”? Oh yes he did, and yet does not seem to care that he owes the parents of the children murdered at Sandy Hook nearly $1 billion. Nancy is appalled by Stewart's much-praised interview with Arkansas AG Leslie Rutledge, Sarah misses the old Jon Stewart, and we compare Stewart's smug “take-down” to a deeply reported, illuminating Reuters story on trans issues. We read some moving reader comments, offer our hotbox picks, and (drumroll!)… Announce our first Zoom meet-up. Wednesday, October 19 at 9pm ET.
